Great trick, never heard of it and it actually makes sense. Definitely gonna try this. Thanks to coach Chris and Harry, great first attempt.
Definitely been doing it this way for a looong time. I did see Richard Gasquet massively wrap the end like that once but didnt know why. Makes sense now. Thank you
I used to fold at the end and since I hit 1HBH I've always used to flip the grip from the top to bottom and have the unused end at the bottom. But I love this style, even before the video ended I already tried in one of my sticks. Coach Chris is the man!
Tip for long term ease: Do the start as normal ie. Wrap the folded grip tape around the base once or twice, then cut it and tape it to the racquet. Now grip over it as normal so you don't have to do the folding thing each time. Hope my explanation makes sense.
That’s what I do. You can just leave a piece of old overgrip on the butt end for additional thickness. Gasquet would not approve of any of this - not good enough for him. Hey, the dude had the insight to know he needs a big “knob” for his SHBH, especially.
I always (since the 80s) just wrapped the wide end at the bottom and the tapper end at the top. With the skinny end at top the finishing tape will cover the entire end without any cutting. I think it is how the wraps are designed. Folding in half at the bottom is new to me though. I will probably try it next time!
@Tennis Spin - This tutorial is awesome Harry. I followed this tutorial to a tee and I had a perfect result. This was also my very first time in my life applying a new tennis overgrip. It was super easy. My thumb got quite the workout but I have that extra beefy butt now and it feels more secure in my hand. Thank you for this tutorial.

Just did my 1st ever over grip thanks to Coach Chris! Did it even better than the guy in the Tennis store! Thanks sooo much for the tip. Really clean finish. Be sure to make sure you pull tight as you go along.
True.. a Yonex pro-stringer told me this as well and it can also be done without folding the flat side, but still starting from this side... depends a bit on racquet and feeling
I used a 1.5 playback speed; works just fine; brisk but perfectly fine. And the double folded start mode gives the end of the racquet a bigger butt edge that your palm pad can get a better grip edge on; more secure for harder hits etc.
The knob is leftover from the old days when racquet handles were plain wood and slippage was an actual problem. Biomechanically the flare reduces the rotational range of the last two, most critical grip fingers - ask any swordsman. ( try pronation-supination with your pinky sticking out and then closed to test this ). ALL Sword hilts are universally straight ( pommels are for balance and never gripped ) to allow the freest wrist movement possible cuz blood is involved. I remove the buttcap and weigh the pommel to make it HL for speed AND mass both. I remove the grip and use only overgrip for best feel ( a swordsman would never pad his hilt ). Hand shock is due to unclean contact with the compensating oversqueezing and subsequent forearm fatigue. Simplest is to just hit clean. Tennis is a basically swordfight at 78 feet
What kind of a pommel do you have on your grip? The flare on the butt cap is there instead of a pommel and prevents the racquet flying out of your hand without gripping it too tight. Also, I did the test you mentioned and I didn't notice any difference in rotational range.
I always started with the „wrong“ end, for having the taped at the end....everybody told me, your doing wrong....Thank you....i see i am not doing wrong....not wraping till know....cool thing. 👍
Richard Gasquet comes to mind. He puts on a grip wrapping it several times foldered hence comes up short even finishing handle. I tried but didn't help getting that gorgeous one hander.
Clash has the enormous knob. I had to change the whole grip to the Head one to ensure my pinkie is comfortable. And I keep it exactly as the coach Chris was demonstrating
I tried this today, and it felt awesome. More confort and a more secure griping. I think those players that often drop theirs rackets during serve, must put the overgrips like this.
It's called a "FLARE" LOL And i build mine up with very narrow strips of taping tape around the but to make the flare bigger. That just stays on the grip, and you tape over it each time you replace the overgrip. Works well for me - I got the tip from my man here in Tokyo who strings my rackets and a JTA official stringer, Japan Open, etc. Will try this method too to see if it's any better.
It makes sense.. I did not think of this way, so instead I have one more layer overgrip wrap underneath only at the end of the grip to get the same result of double cushion effort. I only replace the overgrip on the top layer. I probably will try his way next time.
For some reason, I have always gripped my racquets like this, both tennis and badminton. I was very surprised when i found people with scissors and stuff, to cut an angle at the top and the finish. Glad to know that this is acceptable!
i just wrap a narrow layer of grip tape all along the knob before i do the overgrip. and the knob is so it doesn't slip out of your hand. especially nice on serves
I always start with the square end because it makes the buttcap more even. When I start from the tapered end if forms a buldge and it makes both sides of the handle feel too different, so you can only feel comfortable holding it on one side.
I've doing it this way for years to save time not having to cut at the throat. I don't even bother with the finishing tape. Just use rubber collar. Works fine.
Yep, me too, but only one and a half turns before heading down. I frequently put a turn or so of old overgrip under the replacement grip to build it up a bit more. The combo is not as extreme as Ritchie Gasquet, but enough to feel.
Nice tip. I have been using this technique since I first saw this video and I don't have to use any scissors now. One question. I own two Wilson RF97's with the wilson grip that is flared at the bottom. Do I still need to fold the grip in half to start the wrap on the Wilson grip shape as I don't see the point as the Wilson grip shape is already flared?
I just ordered a Yonex racket and I was little worried about the small butt cap flare on their rackets. But this seems like this method should fix that concern so easily! Thank you for sharing.
You can do the same strategy of folding in half in the "normal" way at the end of the process. This will also avoid any scissors or additional messing around with the tape . Really the only benefit might be that the increased thickness at the racket end might give you more grip.
Harry, you were against the old school Square butt caps. But, now you are learning they serve a vital purpose. Congrats to the young guy (chris) for teaching a old harry dog a new or in this case a old trick.
I actually wrap it with the bigger side without folding it, and wrap it how you would wrap a tourna grip without folding, and then when I get to the top, I just rip off the extra tape and use the finishing tape at the top, I don’t mind the flaps at the top since it doesn’t bother me and I use a one handed backhand
This is how I normally grip my racquet just without the initial fold. And I learned how to grip a racquet on my own and found that it was easier to do the adhesive part last since it’s hard to cut the grip of your at a match. I think this is just a practical way of gripping your racquet since you can’t cut a grip while your at a match unless you have scissors. I really like that fold though so I’m gonna try that.
@@_SasaBrand_ no clue what you’re saying, I only speak and read English and German. I thought the video was going to teach me something new, I guess not!

Soy un entrenador de tenis señor con muchísimos años de experiencia y acabo de probarlo y resulta que el método este de colocar el Over grip es genial. GRACIAS!!!!!
i think one reason for a thicker butt (lol) that hasn't been talked about much is that it just basically allows you to grip the racquet slightly less firmly through your swing without it flying out of the hand. The looser you can grip, the less tennis elbow you'll get, the more it whips through the air. More spin, more power, less strain on the arm, less likelihood of it flying out of your hand. But if it gets too thick, you do have less maneuverability and actually less comfort. So it's a balance.
Thanks for the tip on putting overwrap on the "pro" way. Can you please tell me, is there a shelf life for overwraps once the packaging has been open? For instance, I've got a couple of opened 3-pack packages of overwraps that were bought at least over six years ago. One overwrap seemed to start shredding in a few sections as I was putting it on the racket handle, so I removed it and threw it out. Is it normal for this to happen to old BUT UNUSED overwrap...?
What do you call the rubber band thingy that you covered the finishing tape with? Can that be purchased to add to my racket? Great videos...Keep them coming
I have just done this to mine. And I may be weird but I do an over grip and a Tournagrip over it. Doing this helps me with the creases issue plus I need a Tournagrip because my hands sweat so much during a match. It feels good in my hand. Hopefully it will help on the courts.

I wrapped mine in one go after watching this :) with a pacific Xtack
We have been doing that.. but nice to see it from you
What do you call the rubber band thingy that you covered the finishing tape with?
Can that be purchased to add to my racket?
Great videos...Keep them coming
This is really interesting I might have to try this
Amazing video!! Many thanks
love this way to do grip!
I have just done this to mine. And I may be weird but I do an over grip and a Tournagrip over it. Doing this helps me with the creases issue plus I need a Tournagrip because my hands sweat so much during a match. It feels good in my hand. Hopefully it will help on the courts.
Recently saw Diego Schwartzman's racket... The but cap portion was enormous, like a light bulb on the end. Must be a version of this.
This is an excellent proposal, thank you very much!
