    Since this video came out, I created a new video on this topic to address the comments and questions people are concerned about to give them clarity.
    You can view it here: • OCD Treatment: Getting...
    Getting Rid of OCD Patterns!
    You may think that to get rid of OCD you have to stop yourself from doing the patterns. Discipline. But OCD just preys on discipline, often turning it around against you.
    Self-judgment and guilt feed the OCD, so wouldn't it make sense to stop those? If you stop those, you don't have to put effort into stopping the patterns. They stop on their own.
    Getting Rid of OCD Patterns can be terribly difficult. I'll tell you how in this video.
    I hope this video on Getting Rid of OCD Patterns! serves you in finding hope. I have tons of videos on how to overcome fear and be happy. Subscribe and keep watching.

    i think what she is saying is dont push back against the thoughts. just let them be. but its also important not to do the rituals.the golden rule is it's not what you think but what you do that makes all the diffrents

      Yes you're totally right, because the most important tip to get rid of it is not to engage on the rituals which are the ones that give OCD power.

    I started bawling when you said "it takes it away." I've been struggling with OCD since I was a born. My mom would have to fix things for me until they were right as per the directions I gave her by pointing from my crib as a baby. As I grew up it kept getting worse and worse. Every second of every single day I'm continuously counting and repeating phrases in my head or rotating my left arm over and over. At one point I even stopped breathing because I felt I had to exhale properly before I could take in my next breath.
    I can't wait to try this out because this OCD is so unbearable at times. Glad I found others on the internet who feel my pain as well because other people don't seem to understand the struggle.

      Jasmine Rossol I can relate to you in so many ways! I do the same thing when it comes to breathing. It's drives me insane. It's good to hear that I'm not alone.

      Jasmine Rossol of course other people don't seem to understand our struggle with OCD and when we tell them that they think that we are responsible for these bad thoughts but we indeed can't stop our thoughts

      Jasmine Rossol I think I've had OCD for as long as I can remember. And hearing everything that Jodi Aman said in this video were things I've done and still do as an OCD sufferer.
      I understand completely and you're right. You're not alone.
      One tip I picked up a while ago is a mental technique called Parallel thinking. When you get a negative thought, you counteract it by telling your brain to do the opposite of what you want it to do.
      For example: you tell your brain to not think about a pink elephant. And what's the first thought that comes into your head? A Pink elephant.
      I hope that helps.
      And what Jodi has said is advice I've heard before where you just let the intrusive thoughts just sit there. You don't give them power, they just get less and less.

    This is terrible advice. If I just obey the OCD, then I will develop the habits even more, making them harder to break. How I tamed my OCD was to treat my OCD as a little tweenager with a shitty Walmart Xbox headset screaming at me to do something; that way, I can develop a feeling of contempt towards my OCD, and, thus, not take it seriously.

    • @jorgeandrescoppiano
      @jorgeandrescoppiano 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I do see the risk on this suggestion. But I see also this one is a long fade out to get rid of ocd too. The thing is how long..
      But treating the ocd as a yelling kid is one piece of great advice! Wonderful! Thanks!!!

    OCD takes over your life.
    It seems honestly hopeless at times, and it's easy to cling to moments where you weren't as occupied and feel as if you'll never be happy again.
    But don't worry. Stay positive and keep fighting. OCD won't go away overnight, but it will subside and you can learn to live easily over time. Let's fight this together.

    The thoughts are ridicluous. Your birthday and the speech are relatively unrelated. Don't let the anxiety trick you into thinking they are connected. This is just a power tactic. It needs you to believe it. Ask yourself: Why do you believe it? Use your intellegence to realize you have nothing to wrry about and then when the thoughts come distract yourself. Throw yourself into a creative endeavor to keep you busy.

    I suffered with terrible thoughts and worries in my head when I was a teenager. I didn’t understand what I had until fairly recently from watching TH-cam and doing research on the internet. I used to read papers and watch the depressing stories on the news and think I would go on to commit some of the horrible crimes I would see mentioned. I know I would never do any of those things. I’m a good person and I have never done harm to anybody. At the time I just couldn’t stop the thoughts coming into my head though. I took terrible panic attacks.

    Thanks for sharing this, I’ll give this a try and hopefully it will help. The thing is, I don’t think that any of my family believes I have this kind of OCD. But I understand, because they haven’t had OCD and it’s hard to imagine what it’s really like and to feel like you HAVE to touch the door knob 4 times before you can leave or something bad will happen. Anyway, I’ll hope this works. Thanks.:)

      Giving in to complusions for me really didn't work well, no matter what attitude I had towards my compulsions. I tried this way of doing it, it really didn't work,it made it much much worse. The ONLY thing that worked was ignoring my compulsions completely, not doing them no matter how hard it was or how it made me feel. It was very very difficult to do that but I did it. I am now at a place where I am rarely triggered or have ocd episodes.

      I had terrible fear of contamination/germs/chemicals ocd since I was a child. One day I literally just said ”enough. you fix this or it’s over for you.” and I stopped EVERYTHING unnecessary and started leaving the house and doing things even when my mind was screaming at me. Now I’m 23 and my ocd is so much better that I can live without being preoccupied by thoughs and compulsions.

    I have OCD myself and I really relate to all that you are saying! But what works with me is to not give in to all the patterns that I have to do. You say that it is okay to do all the patterns but I think that by trying to not do them it really makes progress to get rid of them. To all the people with OCD I wanna say that it can go away! Even though sometimes it don't feel like it.

    • @diamondhuntress

    I've had OCD since I was 5 and I was diagnosed at 19. Today I am 52 and despite the huge amount of time and effort and research put into treating my condition with CBT, SSRI/SNRI medication, benzodiazapines, augmentation with neuroleptics such as Risperadal, ACT mindfulness, in patient treatment, etc we have really come no further in better treatment strategies since the 90's. Even Deep Brain Stimulation and Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (which I have tried) are not new and are still only used in trials. It's very sad that a condition as treatment refractory and debilitating as OCD is still not taken serious by the scientific community in comparison to say depression and psychotic disorders like schizophrenia. The personal cost to OCD is a wasted life or a life seriously compromised from living to one's fullest. On top of this the socio economic cost to society is even bigger with people being unable to work, pay tax, etc. The sooner we have effective treatments for all forms of OCD or a cure the sooner the suffering and wasted lives will end.

      Right, so do the compulsions but don't worry that you're doing them? Like if you try not to do them, you're saying that is not the right thing to do, right? So if I was reading a book and this obsession to go back and reread the sentence so that it "sounds right", I should just go back and do that but say "No big deal, it's okay to do this." That's what's you're saying as far as I understand?

    • @doctorjodi
      @doctorjodi  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Sort of. Don't try to figure out whether to DO them or not. Just stop hating yourself for feeling compelled to do them. Stop being annoying or shameful for doing them. By asking me, you are still worrying about them. THIS, and getting what I am saying right is becoming another obsession. You are thinking too hard. Just play with it and see what works. There is no right or wrong here. Just get rid of guilt that you may be wrong.

I've been in therapy for several years but my patterns have manifested a lot over time, even though I am making progress. Fighting my mental disease takes literally almost all my time and energy, early intervention could have prevented this.

    Terrible advice. If you have ocd and are watching this video. You are not to give into the compulsion. I have confessional OCD and like any OCD it feeds off that feeling of relief and like a drug it wants more and more of that feeling and will stop at nothing to get it. Once I confess I feel better and then something new comes in to confess. The Cycle never stops. It will never be satisfied. If I did as the video says, I wouldn't have a job, wife, or friends. I would confess right down to not liking the shoe laces your wearing.

    • @doctorjodi
      @doctorjodi  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Confession OCD is directly related to guilt. You feel compused to relieve guilt. Take away the guilt and you take away your problem. You didn't get the video. Try this one. I explain better: th-cam.com/video/12--7NEkIWM/w-d-xo.html

      +Jodi Aman I still can't relate. I'm 4 years sober and my guilt and shame come from when I was drinking. And my compulsion is to confess it all to my wife, right down to every little detail. I feel I need to do this in hopes of preventing something coming up in the future. Why me telling her or it coming up on its own matters. I don't know. My wife has flat out told me, she does not want to hear it anymore, which has been extremely difficult not getting the reassurance. But my mind is getting better at not finding new stuff or dwelling on what's in there.

    Dear Jodi,
    I have suffered from OCD for 10 years, and I didn't expect that you would solve my problem completely. I used medications and went to many psychiatrists, and nothing helped. Your 5 minute video changed my whole life. I was thinking about quitting my job, and all of a sudden, I started to look for administrative work and be higher and higher in my career. Thank you so much for this memorable help. You helped someone beyond the oceans after years of despair and failure. Let me explain how this happened.
    I have eye contact OCD for 10 years, and this is one of the horrible diseases you would ever imagine. Please those who do not have it, do not say anything about it until you go through it because it coincides with all aspects of your social life (work, family, etc). You will be a big loser! I started to withdraw from the community and I started to hate meeting people. Now, I am happy to meet with them for any period of time. Once I started Jodi's strategy, I noticed a huge progress in a few days. So wonderful. I am still hearing her saying "it is amazing", and I couldn't believe her until I found the truth. It is really amazing.
    During these days, I failed terribly in one conversation and sweated, but I resisted and said: remember what Jodi says: no anxiety, be excited about yourself; let them say whatever they say about you. I noticed that other partners are getting nervous with me too, because I got out of control; they really noticed that I am not OK but I resisted again and again. I didn't want to surrender. I started to laugh at them being clumsy and being afraid of me lol while saying to myself: I am ok with this, let them say whatever about me, but I am happy about myself. You can call me names and whatsoever. I do not care. I swear after a few seconds, the conversation suddenly took a new course of confidence and strength to the degree that I asked the other partner to keep talking rather than going. I became totally normal, and even the partners stopped looking at me as abnormal. I noticed that clearly. This is a proof of success. In the past, I was hoping that they go, but at that time I wanted them to stay more and more. What a great change that I have never had in 10 years.
    Now, I do not want to see other solutions or videos about OCD but the video above. I am not promoting anything, but I swear I reached the solution. There are many solutions, but Jodi's solution solved mine, and for this reason, I am very grateful to her. I didn't even read the comments below, because I do not want to read that people cast doubt on this helpful strategy and get back to this OCD, because it completely works for me. But let me convince others how this happened to help people understand how effective it is. I am part of you and I want to help you too after I got helped, so read carefully.
    OCD consists of three stages: obsessions (obsessive ideas) ==> anxiety (fear) ==> compulsions (obligatory behaviors) and the cycle goes on and on. I realized that my obsessive ideas/thoughts are not special with me, I noticed that normal people are thinking about them, too (that is the first discovery: I am normal like them). I also realized that my actions are done by normal people too, not special with me (another wonderful discovery). Yet, I realized that anxiety is the only thing I have that normal people do not have (this is the first realization that I am ABNORMAL). I found that anxiety is the link that I have alone. I am so anxious and nervous about the ideas, I am afraid of judgement, afraid of rejection, afraid of shame and guilt, afraid of being let alone, afraid of being judged as bad, afraid of being unwanted, clumsy, worth laughing at etc. I then reached the conclusion that if I overcome this anxiety, the link between "obsessive ideas/thoughts" and "compulsory behaviors" shown about will be broken. If this link is really broken, then, I will think about the same ideas like normal people, but I will never be anxious to do actions repetitively.
    After I saw this video, now, I do not care about what other people say about me. I am not worried, and I feel much better and better in my entire life. What a big jump I made, and what a relief I have. This OCD is totally gone. In fact, I started to say: I do not have OCD (although I am diagnosed with it), but I have anxiety. Anxiety is the whole problem and fear of others' judgement. Trust me, no cure will be helpful if you cannot overcome this anxiety, and do not say that my type of OCD is different, because we all share the same problem: anxiety. Let other say whatever they say about you, but be happy and excited about what you are doing and do not feel your actions are wrong. Laugh at people who reacted negatively with you so much and say "it is ok, do not be afraid, what I am doing is fantastic lol". This shameful feeling is the obstacle for all OCD people. If you cannot get over this, maybe no progress will be felt which is the ugly truth. If you are behaving carzily once the idea is coming, this is the anxiety not the idea. Without anxiety you will be relaxed. I am part of your community, I really know that it will be so hard for you to know that people are judging you badly, but over time, you will realize that this hardness is the start of hope and cure. I had a10 year suffering and was fearful of my OCD, and now it is totally gone. Thank you Jodi for this, and I am mentioning your name because you made a great impact on my terrible life even if people are negative with you, you taught us to accept ourselves. I wrote this long essay because I got the solution, and I realized how many people are suffering and waiting for people to help and I wanted to help them too. The first days, they will be hard on you, you might need days or weeks, but eventually you will be normal. Once I said to myself: Will I really be back to normal again? Is this possible? I had no hope. I didn't realize that it is totally possible if this anxiety is gone. You will behave automatically as a normal person. Abnormality is associated with anxiety.
    Again, it will be hard on you to listen to your whispering self saying: people are now judging you badly. You are being bad, what is wrong with you? come one! get out of here, be nervous and get lost!! It is really hard to accept this process, but once you accept it, you have no OCD at all, that's the truth and nobody can judge you any longer later on in your life because you will never need to act abnormally. You will be totally fine because you have no abnormal actions to be judged on. I swear I wrote this long essay just for you so please do not say anything about me or so and so, or you can say it because I really do not f**king care. I hated my life because of this fear. Your judgement of me is now much easier in my life to tackle than having OCD. Life is short.

    This may works when it comes to physical behavioural compulsions. But when it is regarding mental compulsions, letting us not holding back from counting numbers and doing other rituals will only make it worse. The more you let count numbers and do rituals in mental compulsions, it wil become lyk a habit, and you can't avoid it. Other things lyk how you said about touching things, if u keep on doing, u may not bother much.

    I have a question. Okay so what if there are 2 events coming up for me...(for example) 1 event being my birthday and 2nd event being giving a speech or doing somthing that makes me really nervous.
    My birthday is coming up first, and I feel that if I have my birthday before I do the speech my birthday will be ruined. But I have no choice. I can't change my birthday or the day of my speech. What do I do about that. My thoughts are saying that if I don't do the speech my birthday will be ruined. And to be honest I don't mind giving the speech. But I am getting really anxious. I don't know what to do.

    This is good. I lived with undiagnosed OCD for 35 years and worrying that you are actually having the thoughts is 90% of it. I have to say, in my opinion, this is a better mindset for the intrusive thoughts and not the compulsions. Also, she should become a bit more educated about OCD. You should not say to someone suffering from OCD Harm (or really OCD in general) "Okay, I'll do it!" Because you have no idea what is going on in their mind. It might not be something like taking the second plate, lol. If you suffer from OCD Harm (or Pure OCD) when the terrorizing thoughts come into your mind, take control for a moment. Try saying something like, "Everyone has weird thoughts sometimes, it's not a big deal." Then get back to what you were doing, laundry, going to the bathroom, taking care of a loved one or pet. You're going to panic a number of times doing that, but don't give up. The intrusive thoughts will start feeling like a memory of actually thinking it. Keep going, you can be completely free from OCD. This is a complicated subject and only those who suffer can truly know what a hell it is. If you ever feel alone, know my thoughts and prayers are always with you.

    Isn't this a short-term fix though? Of course you'll feel less anxious if you just listen to what's compelling you, but it comes back and it will keep coming back because you listened and felt reassured. I'd be walking and then I get this feeling like I have to walk with my hands held above my head to 'expose to embrassment and humility', and I would do this and i'd be okay for a day or so, then it would come back.
    You've got to let OCD flail and get pissed the fuck off until it leaves for good. I think this is what is best.

    I'm searching for ways to help my son and his obsessive hand washing. I think this method could work. To those who say it doesn't work, you are probably right. I think you have to view it in the light of how we go about meditating. You will have distracting thoughts, but you find peace by not pushing at them. Let them be. Allow them their space and they like their power over you. Not everyone will understand this. It would do you well to study how to meditate.

    This isn't bad advice, but it's simplistic. It's not like you pick one method and then your OCD goes away forever. It comes back. It changes strategy, changes direction. It's a lifelong struggle, and it has no cure. When people talk about being "cured" of OCD, I think that either 1) they've learned to live with it, 2) they're currently in remission and will suffer a relapse sooner or later, 3) they've learned to suppress their behaviors so that the impulse isn't as strong. To tell people that they can just shrug their shoulders and stop caring is misinformation at best. Also, there are different types of OCD, and this method probably doesn't work for everyone.

    If she gave advice on how to stop ocd rituals, I must have missed it. All I heard was ‘continue doing what you’re doing, and don’t let it bother you.’ Really?? What ludicrous, harmful advice! There’s a reason that therapists who treat OCD agree that the best method for dealing with compulsions is to resist the urge to act on them, and to redirect your thoughts toward something positive, in order to reduce anxiety. You’re literally retraining your brain to recognize what is rational behavior, and what isn’t. It’s difficult initially, but it gets easier over time. - The advice in this video will worsen OCD behavior. - Also, what’s with the odd, inappropriate laughter at the beginning? Very strange.

  • @MrPicklerwoof
    @MrPicklerwoof 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Sorry, but every therapist out there that treats severe OCD doesn't make you carry on doing them and not caring about them. The whole point of severe OCD is that the compulsions are damaging to your own mental well-being and need to stop so you can get back to living your life. End of story.
    So you break it down and start refusing to give in a little at a time, then keep analysing the outcome: Did anything bad happen by not giving in? Gradually you realise, apart from the initial agitation, that by not partaking in your OCD nothing bad actually happened. Sure enough, your brain slowly 'retrains' itself to a new normal.

    I would like to get help but I don't know if I have OCD.
    I don't really have a bunch of thoughts that pop up. It's one big lingering fear and taunt in the background I'm going to commit blasphemy. I feeI have a weird feeling like my head is going to pop with anxiety and I'm going to have a break down and lose my salvation. This fear has been here for months. There's also a weird unwanted "urge" that I want to do it. I hope this is OCD and not something else.

    My “rituals” only take place in my house. As soon as I get home stress builds up when I see that my family has caused “mess” causing rearrangement in things I have previously arranged the day before and I feel like I’m in a continuous pattern. However if I don’t do this pattern I feel lazy and unmotivated and start crying over the fact that I let the house get so unorganised. I don’t understand it. But when I let myself do these compulsions, I realise more and more different objects are out of place and start to add more to my “routine”. It ruins my life because I end up accomplishing nothing considering I have to repeat these steps every single day of my life. I don’t have negative thoughts though. I don’t feel like my family is in danger so I’m not even sure if it is considered ocd. My friends and family think it’s all a big joke for attention considering this routine only takes place in my living space (including rooms I am “living” in during a holiday / vacation). I just feel hopeless to control it when if I carry on, I get more stressed. But if I don’t I also get stressed. It’s a continuous loop.

      You don't attach to it, you shrug about thinking of it, not doing it. And then move on to a constructive task. DOn't get upset by it and the compulsions will fade faster.

    Ocd is a monster living within your head and it only gets its energy by giving it atention and this is my own experience as soon as i make my self to don't give a shit about a thing it stops the best thing what you need to do is trust (YOUR SELF) just trust your own self that yes i had already chcked the stove and its cloed its fine when you don't trust your self that is what triggers your obsesions for doing it again and again try to concentrate on the thing what you are doing make a mental note that yes its done and than its all done.....

    Hey Jodi, I was wondering, if you simply do what the OCD wants you to, then how does that get rid of the OCD?

    • @grubbymanz3928

      it doesn't it makes it worse.

    • @doctorjodi
      @doctorjodi  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Because it gets rid of guilt that feeds the OCD. If you have no guilt, no pressure and frustration, the compulsion has no power. So it just stops on its own. People often don't try it because it seems counterintuitive but if you understood OCD and why it stays pwerful, you'll see that this works. It doesn't hurt to try it and you'll see for yourself.

      Deya Masri hi! This is what Eckhart Tolle calls being the space for it to happen. When fully observed with total awareness but not labeled or judged, it loses its power over you. He says it is like putting the unconscious into the spotlight, the darkness will be transformed (if I remember it right). Just know that it is happening , observe what it makes u feel at that moment, if there are thoughts coming do the same. Putting attention to them makes them weaker and weaker each time. I have heard someone do this with addiction and it works also. When catching urself anxious, it will be helpful to be very conscious of the thoughts and any sensations it brings. Usually being aware of this will lessen it gradually until u don't feel the need anymore. It worked for me. Bring awareness while doing it without resistance. Just saying.

    • @whodeani2216
      @whodeani2216 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Very sorry for the late response, but I now realize (and sort of guessing) that this is CBT? Where you would expose yourself to shat makes you anxious and then handle differently i.e. bot washing your hands constantly rechecking... Is this correct?

    There is not a permanent treatment for ocd. You must always be allert. Do not take it too complex. Just do not do stupid things and wait. You can have anxiety but wait. That's all. That will end. Nothing lasts long time . Sorry for english.

    I have to disagree with you, the way to conquer OCD is to NOT give into compulsions, if your OCD is telling you that you "don't love you girlfriend"(rocd- pure O) or you can't sit in a chair without blah blah blah happening, you are supposed to go against it. Let the anxiety be there when you choose to not follow a compulsion, eventually, after repeating this the anxiety lessens and that compulsions because obsolete but you must keep up with it. It's call exposure and response prevention

    • @doctorjodi
      @doctorjodi  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      What I am saying is not disagreeing with this. What I am saying is that if ou get rid of the guilt, it is infinietly easier NOT to do the compulsion. The anxiety lessens and you move on. Yes, I believe in exposure. But one has to learn to lesson the energy behind the anxiety. Lessen what is feeding it. This equals freedom.

    Not true. EPT is different with giving OCD. If you allow your current obbsession one, twice then three, you stuck in there forever....And you'll soon will get into new obsession soon. It's like a cycle never stop because you won't ever feeling satisfy if you giving it all the time. Like i'm obsessed with flannel shirts right now and if as this video said, i allowed into my ocd, i will spending all day staring at it and never be satisfy. :/

    • @doctorjodi
      @doctorjodi  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      You are using obsessions to mean compulsions. You are supposed not feel guilty about the obsessions, and so you don't do the compulsions.

For example, I have to hold down the light switch for five seconds until I let it go. If I don't, I have to start over and it gives me anxiety.
