I am 57. When I was in my early twenties I rode rice rockets. At 25, I met my wife and she told me no more bikes. Mainly because she could not ride due to back issues. On my 56th birthday she lost her fight with cancer. I lost my wife and best friend. So on my 57th birthday I bought a 2019 Road Glide. Her name is Shilo, my wife's internet name.

Saturday was a perfect day to ride, so many bikes out only in the middle 70’s, did over 200 miles just riding around Ohio. I’d be fine if it stayed like this the rest of the summer.

I don't think the Panam is a mistake, then I have a 2022 Special in army green, that I brought in March 2023 and I love it. I have had a few small issues, with the starter clutch needing to be replaced and recently the alternator failed (the bike would still run but kept cutting out). Fortunately HD fitted the 2024 upgrade kit under warrantee.
I see mine as an all roads sports tourer, more than a dirt road bike. I have taken it on off road trails, but it is very heavy and wears you out pretty fast. I did motocross and enduro in the 1990's, and I need all of those skills to ride it over rough terrain.
I did an ADV riding course to refresh my skills, and I dropped the bike 3 times during that training, the only scratches were on the crash bars.
The tech on it is just amazing, you can customize the ride modes so easily and make it feel completely different.
I have fitted luggage, bigger foot pegs, and I fitted the standard pegs on the crash bars so I can pivot them down to use them as highway pegs but not destroy them when I fall on dirt.
I also adjusted the forks, so they are flush with the top of the fork clamps, this lifts the front end slightly, slow the steering and makes handling on loose dirt better.
I run the low tinted screen, with a tinted deflector on top, not angled up but back at 45 degs, and I have no buffeting around my helmet, and it still keeps the wind off my chest and shoulders on the high setting. I don't like the higher screen, I get too much turbulence around the bottom of the helmet.

I'm with you as far as your attitude about off-road riding. For me, it's the delight that if the pavement ends, the ride doesn't have to. Also, I enjoy this type of video, the sort of one-on-one conversation-style production. Simple is better, IMO, especially since, when we're riding, there's no fanfare and no drama, (we hope). It's a ride, and it's what we do, and it doesn't need to be turned into a massive production to be enjoyable. Stay safe out there. :)

The Pan American is a great bike, but after riding my neighbor's `23 model I knew it wasn't the right bike for me. Nothing notably wrong with the bike, I just knew I wanted something a little smaller. My past two bikes (Yamaha Roadstar 1700 and Kawasaki Concours 14) were both big heavy bikes, and I wanted to get back to something lighter and more nimble in the 600-900cc range. Ended up going with the Honda Transalp XL750 and absolutely love it. It checked all my boxes other than cruise control and tubeless wheels, but those are both easily fixed via the aftermarket. Already added the Veridian cruise control, now I'm just saving up for a set of VMX tubeless wheels.
And yes, up until the last week or so it's been crazy hot here in Ohio.

i really think if you research enclosed cargo trailers you would find that you can customize them to your specific needs. it seems painfully clear that you need to be able to transport your bikes at times. you can get a smaller trailer, that are made so much better than a camper, you can insulate it easily, put shelves in it for camping gear, put an AC\ heater on the roof a couple of solar pannels for charging cameras , a fold down bed...ect. ( look at some you tube channels on this, ) they are so versitile and light weight and make a perfect base to operate from. I love mine , weather im tent camping with iy or staying at a motel, i have ALL my gear, tools, extra tires and even a mini fridge with freezer . ( i dont have solar panels but have it wired to plug in , cause i usually camp with power.. i dont have windows in mine , because i wanted to be able to keep it very secure and i dont sleep in it. i keep a nice stand up 4 person tent and cot and large comfortable chairs in it all secured with e-track on the walls while towing. i think your husband would enjoy the design and building process also. jmho.... you can tow an all alluminum trailer with just about ANY truck.

Hi Jess. I've been riding baggers for years, and earlier this year picked up a used Pan America Special. Its a blast to ride. I'm tall and older than you, so I struggle a little with the position. I took a course similar to your Rawhide experience, then took off to ride a trail called the RimRocker from Moab, UT to Montrose, CO. I was ill prepared for a trail like that on a bike as big as the PA. There was one section that was way beyond my technical capabilities, and I forgot to turn traction control off (a necessity at times and a pain to do every time you stop the bike on the PA). So, let me say (1) I love my PA for riding, (2) a bike this size requires a lot of skill on technical terrain that takes time to develop, and (3) learn when to use or turn off the user safety features like traction control - they can get you hurt on technical terrain. On mine I was on a steep technical rocky climb and the rear wheel needed to spin, but I had forgotten at a stop to turn off the TC so it shut the bike down in the middle of a climb and almost sent me off a cliff....Same thing will happen at a water crossing if not careful. Turn off TC or you're probably going swimming. Have fun, ride safe, and keep making your content. Its obviously enjoyed by many.

There's an 80-ish old guy here in Central Illinois who rode his Pan American to the Pacific Ocean last year but had to haul ass back to take his yearly state mandated road test.
Illinois requires any riders over the age of 75 to take a yearly road test to renew their license.
Said he failed the test when he forgot how tall the Pan American is.
So he had to take the retest on his Ducati Multi Strata.
He passed it on the Ducati.
Oddly, he rides it mostly in rain mode, cuts the 150 hp back.
It's 100lbs lighter than my Dyna and twice the horsepower.
I understand why Jess bought one.
The Pan American is the first Harley I've ever seen with a center stand.
The $29,000 price tag makes me swallow my tongue.
The mechanics at my local Springfield (Illinois) dealer said the early ones had stator issues.
    But that's all fixed now.
Have a ball on Stevie, Jess.

Also a motorcycle rider here in Ohio. I occasionally watch your videos and appreciate your perspective.
When it comes to TH-cam and social media and basically any content, I know how this all works where your titles and thumbnails are the only things people have to go off of to decide if they’re gonna click on something.
Sometimes things are clickbait and the piece of content delivers so clickbait makes sense when that happens. It pulls people in and they feel like they got what they signed up for. And sometimes the title and/or thumbnail gets someone to click and after 20 minutes, the viewer feels like nothing in the video answers the question or talks about the main point of the title or thumbnail.
“Boy do I wish I knew this when buying my Pan America…”
I think people thought you were gonna say “I wish I knew this feature sucked, or that the bike has these issues, or that it’s so expensive to do this or that with this bike, or…”
Maybe I missed what you wished you knew. I watched the video in full once. Then I watched it again skipping around. Maybe you wish you knew more off-roading skills? Maybe you wish you knew people were gonna keep asking you why you bought a Pan America? Maybe you wish you knew that it had a 1,000 mile break in period? Not sure.
No hate or negative criticism, just a genuine thought about this video and some of your dramatic titles. It gets clicks and the content is entertaining no matter what you make, but I’m sure some people think “She did not waste my time, I enjoy her thoughts, I like motorcycles too, this was fun to watch, I’m interested in her opinions and inner thoughts on these topics… but I don’t think I got the answers to the questions I had going into this video.”
I don’t know why I typed so many words to say what I said. Haha. Keep making cool shit and we’ll keep showing up to watch. Cheers!

The “BOY” part of the title should have been apparent sarcasm…
The whole video was about “Boy I wish I knew I had other options” HEAVY sarcasm.
I quite literally explain in the video why I bought the pan am very well knowing that there are other “adv” options out there.
Everyone will call it “click bait”
      I call it “click entice”
Just because the topic ends up not being a viewers perceived does not mean the context is false or misleading.
      It’s all perspective.

    Yes to MotoVlog Mondays!
It’s a long ways from Ohio, but you should bring Stevie to Babes Ride in the Dirt in California! I myself am doing BRO Central Coast this year, my first moto camping experience!

Heat is a problem for me as well and I live in Texas. I've heard that after a bad heat stress event like you mentioned it makes a change in your brain that creates your overheating issue. I've not talked to a doctor about it but I have the same problem. Try riding an air cooled bagger in Texas when it is over 100f outside! The heat reflected from blacktop roads is insane as well so most of my riding is first thing in the morning or the middle of the night.

I live in Texas and the heat for this month is HOT! When temps under 95 - I get the bike out for around an hour ride. I’m like you too - the body core temp gets warm fast and have trouble cooling down. Usually something cold like ice cream 🍦 helps 😊 Love the videos!!

I bought a sport touring / ADV bike... and I really didn't enjoy riding it very much and I never racked up that many miles. Now I have a touring bike and a sport bike and am having much more fun. Honestly, if I ever do get an ADV bike in the future I'm going to get a mid-sized one and probably trailer it to the dirt vs. trying to have a touring bike and off-road bike in one.

Devilstone sounds fun, I didn’t know about that one and you could take the long way out of Cody and still do Beartooth pass. I hope you get to enjoy it, Jess, and the weather should be cooling off, especially at altitude. Wish I had the time this year. Ride safe!

When I was first riding street bikes, me and everyone else in America wore black leather riding jackets. As I aged, I was getting baked like a potato in my jackets, so I gambled and switched to grey leather and never looked back. It doesn't absorb the heat of the day, but still kept me warm when it got cold.

Day 1 ....The first 50 miles ride it mildly and do not lug it.... Day 2-5....Then to the 500 marl ride it within speed limit anywhere just keep it cool. Do an oil and filter change and ride it like you stole it.. Yah for warranty work do a 1k service.. FYI use a zinc break in oil supplement in the oil during the first 1k...... So within a week you can be riding anywhere for as long as you want...

Travel suggestion: Ride to Alaska. I'm sure you've thought about it. Western Canada and the roads in Alaska are spectacular. Or, almost as good, Ride to Newfoundland. Much closer and while the mountains aren't Western Canada and Alaska, Newfoundland is like no other place. The friendliest people on earth. Beautiful Gros Morne National Park. Seriously. I've gone there twice from SW Indiana and if I weren't 73, might do it again. And of course, to get there you must ride through Quebec or go through New Brunswick and Nova Scota. Even if you never put the bike on the ferry to Newfoundland, the Cabot Trail is just spectacular. The Pan American would be perfect for this tour and oh yes, with either Alaska or Newfoundland, you get to enjoy wonderful Canada.

I ride a ‘22 BMW R1250GSA. He’s triple black and named Nomad after Captain America made his character shift. He’s a whole lot of bike to handle off road. So I try to stay on roads. I accidentally ended up on what a local referred to as a ‘goat path’. There were some very sketchy moments getting back to pavement or at least gravel. I hope to be at Wailin’ Wayne.

On my Dyna bought new and was riding 60 miles a day to and from work. Throw in some casual riding through the week I put 1000 miles in 1 week. BTW traded that bike in on my 2019 Ultra that now has 50,000 + miles on her. Leaving for Texas in 2 weeks so I should have 60,000 by the time I get home. Keep riding and keep posting vids and I will keep watching.

I can't wait to see the rest of Jordan and your trip to the Swiss Alps. Once the videos are out, are you going to do a video of how the booking process was. What it was like going through the rental process for the bikes you and Jordan used. Did you need to do anything special to be allowed to rent internationally? We saw you guide Gary pick you up from the airport. Did he take you two to the dealership to finish the rental process?
Sorry I know that's a lot. But as soon as I watched your first video I got excited for the possibility of doing something like that.

🎉 There are a lot of “Forrest Service Rds” and fun trips all over Southern Ohio that would be easily doable on the PanAm without fear of damage… unless you’re pushing it. I love backpacking and grew up on dirt bikes.. so ADVing was inevitable! Regarding “Break in” there was a guy on a message board that said it’s pretty much a myth and in fact you should ride it hard to properly wear in surfaces. Note, there is a difference between hard break in and just plain abuse. Just a thought. Every new bike I’ve gotten I just ride it.. change oil and filter around 500 and again at 1000. Then good to go.

I have a 22 Pan America 30,000 miles on it. The bike is great i knew going in that there would be some issues with it and there were a few. Fuel pump screaming, starter clutch, and wiring harness that the MOCO sent an engineer down to diagnose and fix. It recently spent 8 weeks in the shop for a stator. I've had a chain slider for my swing arm on order for over 100 days, this is a $34 wear item that the MOCO will not make available. Every time the backorder date gets close they extend it. I'm about sick of this thing. The bike is great I love it but not being able to get simple parts is getting old very quickly.
Oh well enjoy the bike it is a blast.

I know how you feel. Because of my back all my riding is exactly that, short trips around town. I use my bike as primary transportation so most of my riding is short little hops to get beer or doctor/medical appointments, so yeah it takes forever to build up miles.
P.S. I don't know how to edit videos but the other day I got video of two of your favorite things, tar snakes and dirt road hahaha. The whole time I was on it I was thinking of what you would think in those conditions. The difference is that in Texas the tar snakes are half melted already and if you accelerate on them you can feel the bike break traction. If I can figure out how to edit I'll post it, if you want it I can email it.
