My grandfather cut a college class and got a demerit for it to go see John Philip Sousa and band. He said it was well worth it. Excellent job hunting down all those pictures.
The displayed musical examples of Sousa's marches in this production come from recordings by the Staff Music Corps Band of the German Armed Forces, conducted by Major Friedrich Deisenroth (1903-1997), who produced an LP with Sousa's most popular marches. The sound is unmistakable.
Great music! Great American! Great video! Greatly enjoyed! I attended the cemetery ceremony performed by U. S. Marine Band on his birthday one year. Very moving tribute! Stars and Stripes Forever! 🇺🇸
Great to hear this. Thank-you. With such a wealth of good music from one composer, it's often a shame that most of his best marches are rarely heard these days. Here are a few of the really good lesser-known ones, in no particular order,: The Northern Pines, Pathfinder of Panama, The New York Hippodrome, Fairest of the Fair, Bride Elect, Transit of Venus, The Diplomat, The Gladiator, Black Horse Troop, and Our Flirtation. There are dozens more, not to mention Sousa's many other non-march compositions.
An utter gem and a delight to watch and listen to. Sousa has always been a hero of mine, and I have always adored his music. God bless him! Thank you all for putting this together for our enjoyment and interest.

Thank you! This was magnificent! My father introduced me to Sousa’s music when I was 5 or 6 and I have from that time, always found myself stirred, inspired and energized when listening to his marches. That I’m originally from Singapore and still retain that memory from the mid-fifties, is all the more poignant to me in that my dad used Sousa’s music as an introduction to classical music for me, which at that age I literally had a fear of - particularly Mozart and Bach, Haydn and Handel. A sensitive child, I guess, I would run away from the radio in fear. I never knew their names till much later on, because I didn’t want to know, but when my dad noticed I was quite happy when hearing Sousa or Johan Strauss, Tchaikovsky waltzes he made it a point to tell me one day, that John Philip Sousa composed great marches and that this was classical music too. From that day, I never ever forgot the name of the great man who made a little girl get over her emotions and gravitate to a full-blown classical aficionado. I owe the maestro - and my dad- a lot. This is fantastic. As a huge history lover and a music lover and a military lover and a music lover I saved this to two of my playlists. I find this video exquisitely done. It's on the non TH-cam level of quality, as in a professional level, master documentary from a TV studio or such. That's where I think you found it and copied it to your TH-cam channel because it has no semblance to even good content creators on TH-cam. Thanks for the wonderful exportation of quality content.

For most of Marine Corp history they were part of the US Navy. Look it up. The US Marines are a reflection of the English habit of putting sharpshooters on ManofWar ships to shoot enemies on other ships from the yard arms of sailing ships. The beginning US Navy adopted this British habit. Thus, a seaman/soldier. The oldest marine tune I know of is The Halls of Montezuma. It refers to a city in Mexico that was the first place in history where Marines came ashore in war in large numbers and spear headed an army into Mexico City. If you appreciate military marches and songs you should learn more.
Stars and Stripes Forever is only second to our National anthem, The Star Spangled Banner. The great America the Beautiful is third. One March versus two songs. I'd say America has done itself proud. Sousa is the greatest American composer of all time. Sorry about that Duke Ellington, Count Bassi, Benny Goodman, Glen Miller, Tommy Dorsey. But our ignorant, unlearned population doesn't know of music history, especially young folks and thugs, they only know crap.

I played in a high school in houston Texas inthe 1960s, and we played Sousa mostly. I can still feel my fingers on my piccolo. Good memories

Our local high school has an outstanding alumni band. A favorite part of there concerts are when they play Sousa marches.

Sousa left the Merine Corps as a Sergeant Major, but later was commissioned in the Naval Reserve with the rank of Lieutenant Commander.

To me, Sousa is the second most tuneful composer ever. For me, only Tchaikovsky compares.

Sousa is a Portuguese surname. Sosa (without the U) is Spanish. This is first time that I see someone stating that he was ‘spanish’.
