The sheer size is what makes it so attractive
I have had this car for just over a year and I LOVE it! I am not a car person - I am a older person that likes safety and comfort. This car drives like it is floating on a cloud. Now that I took the plunge and bought a GLS. I don't every plan to go back. I feel safe and I love driving it. It is my happy place.

Well an all new GLS is coming for 2019, so this is on it's way out. The question is why did Carbuyer bother reviewing a vehicle that's to be replaced so soon..
NeoGee you can get a lot of money off when buying brand new and they have good finance deals on many outgoing models. Might be of interest to a lot of people 🤷🏽♂️

People, this is a just a minor update. This is NOT the NEWEST GLS that is coming out soon. The New version is set to be released (early) 2019, after the new GLE.
What's new over the 2017 and 2016 models?

I have both the Gls and the R class I have also had the R63 amg..... I prefer the R class for space as you can move the second row seats to accommodate the third row passengers, also in the R class the split seats on either side are awesome for letting the kids outs safely on school runs.

From the inside its identical to my wifes 10 year old R-class. Even down to the electric side windows. DVD players???? Seriously thats laughable

This is basically a 11-year old bigger R-Class with new headlights.
I'm not defending Mercedes, but you are totally wrong. The R-class has a completely different interior. The R-class interior is only slightly similar to the first gen GL and second gen ML which came out in 2006 because they based on the same platform. The third generation ML (facelifted as GLE) came out in 2011 and had a completely different interior. The second generation GL came out in 2013, (facelifted as GLS which is shown in the video) and shared an almost identical interior to the 2011 ML. If you think it looks "identical" to your wifes R-class, you need to get your eyes checked out.

By that logic the " redesign" isn't new because the new one is coming the next year

@@hsvcommodore4111 The car came out more than a year ago, doing this review now is really silly.
2 minor additions… often missed by all reviewers…the middle row seat bottoms flip up, and the seat backs fold down manually to provide a level load floor all the way back for even more space. Also, handling, cornering and rear loading height improves dramatically if you choose “sport” over “comfort in the air suspension settings. I have a 14 Diesel GL with AMG appearance package and ensure our large dog hops up in the rear only when sport is selected. It’s also fun to find the apexes in sport when merging off the highway. Remember this vehicle is around 5500 pounds so if you want fling ability get an SL. Haha.

From 2016, with the release of the facelifted X166 second generation model, the GL-Class was renamed as Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class as per the revised nomenclature adopted by the brand. This is not a new model, but a vehicle that has been in production since 2013 with minor modifications. The new version is to be released on the market in 2019. For many years, Mercedes has not changed models that sell well each year, but only adds new solutions in parallel and for choice (such as a new type of headlamps).
The Merc,s dash may be older, but it works. I had a 2018 Range Rover. After staring it up, it was anybody’s guess what was not going to work that day ... camera, phone, media, navigation. In fact on a motorway, the digital dashboard totally went out. Based on Range Rover internal documentation that my service advisor showed me, Range Rover technical people do not have these problems out.
You can Pick a Premium car or a reliable car, you cant have both 🤔🤔🤔

@@Brian-jv8iy reliable Cars are Mechanically Simple and have way less to go Wrong, Logic & Common sense, mandates if you have more Extras, such as Turbos, automatic gearboxs, your car is more likely to go wrong compared with a car which has very few to go Wrong

Citroen C1 or the Toyota Aygo has very little go wrong no Assisted steering, not even electric windows or electric parking brake, 3 Cylinders Engine, what Could possible go Wrong??? 🤔

1- F1 Engines last 1 Race, than they have to be rebuilt is the same with most racing cars

Obviously with high performance road cars it does not mean they will last 1 Trip, However High pressure Turbos + Automatic gearboxs constantly being pushed to the Limit they won't last as long as a vehicle which has none of this things

What makes you think a Engine with only 3 Cylinders + 3 Low pressure injectors will last the same as a Engine with 8 Cylinders + 8 high pressure Injectors??? 🤔 🤔 🤔

Unfortunately many of these reviews, in their comparison with other cars, forget the overall idea of Quality.. agree, inside this car is a bit outdated. However comparing it to the even more expensive Range Rover should include a review of the quality in general.. the Range rover sucks with all kinds of issues. The Merc, is top notch quality giving you a very reliable car with great qualities.

For the shorter people, I think the boot close/lock buttons could be placed just inside the boot opening and not on the boot lid/door. 👍

I just love the gls
For more challenging road handling get the active curve suspension. That resolves the handling issue. 2nd hand buys are a bargain and the pre-2020 models will be the best buys as they don’t have the overly complex tech that can go wrong, they are also very reliable.

What is it with this Range Rover obsession all the time. James Batchelor, can you not review a car without constantly mentioning another car. If you was a car built in the UK by and Indian company with a bad reputation for things going wrong, then you buy a Range Rover. This is not a Range Rover, this is a German Built Mercedes.
It's actually built in the USA. The Range Rover is a competitor, so it makes sense to mention it.

To everyone saying they think this car is useless and overpriced it’s a great second hand buy! Get a nearly new one for £45k and it’s a decent car for the price considering it’s size.
Unfortunately there is no test on off-road routes. I'm planning to buy SUV, which could be used not only on flat roads.

It's not a facelift. The GLS has been out since 2016.
The camera angles are abit annoying, you saying look at the storage space but you can't actually see much

I purchased a brand new GLS 350d from MB Guilford UK. After less than a week of having the car, when driving on the Motorway - the car would not go faster than 50mph until after some time.
Called RAC and as soon as the engineer plugged in his Computer he recognized a fault and asked us to return the car.
I could not take the car back until the following Monday - when driving the car on Sunday with my family, the car lost total power and we were stranded in the middle of the road. After a few minutes it powered up and we got home.
I called the recovery team to return the car back to the dealers on Monday morning.
After a lot of arguing with the dealers they finally agreed to take the car back and order me a new car.
My second car arrived and was fine until about 4 weeks. The battery light came on while I was on the motorway when suddenly the entire car lost all power and i lost power steering - the car stopped and left me stranded in the middle of the motorway.

X5 is smaller... you would need to compare this to the coming X7

I like your channel, i just happened to come across it when a New neighbor moved in down below us and (I had the nicest auto here at our building or so I THINK i have a pretty decent auto being a Mercedes ML350 2014 with 38K miles and ALL the extras, back DVD players just like this one in your review, also the Double sun roof, and basically EVERY extra I could get, all leather and 4 wheel drive etc.... I used to have a Beautiful ML350 2002 BEAUTIFUL All Buffalo Leather and Every Extra you could get and Waaaay ahead of its time but I crashed it and totaled It!! It was Priced at 10K even being 10+ years old bc It was such a Nice vehicle) Anyway....sheeesh...lol...I now like i said have what i thought was a beautiful Mercedes (not an AMG but still decent) and then our neighbor moved in and I noticed the Coooolest thing ever when they went out to their vehicle and I guess they unlocked it (I was out on my porch looking down and i saw this) when they unlocked it, as in all Mercedes, everything lights up (it was dark out so i saw it Really Good) and then I saw like what I can only describe from the like the Batman movie when the Batman signal is reflected into the dark sky above the city!!! Well I saw a Great big BRIGHT Mercedes Symbol Lit up on the Ground Just like the Batman signal in the sky!!! It was the Absolute cooolest thing ever and it did it on Both sides of the vehicle i guess coming from the bottom of the Mirrors or I'm not even sure but it was A Big Bright Mercedes Symbol on either side of the car lit up and looked SO Incredible, so I started looking into the GLS (I had never seen one b4) and came across your video. I apologize that this is Sooooo long! I like your review on this and so I am sub-ing bc I now think I want to trade my Mercedes in and Upgrade! It is a 2014 like i said with all the extras, beautiful white with black leather interior and ONLY (I think its about that) 42K miles on it! I bought it last year with only 38K miles!! So i need to get a Price for it??? Any ideas on how to get the best price for it and/or for a trade in value? Thank you so much ;)))

I have this Benz and a 2016 Honda pilot. There’s much more room in the pilot. I can fit 7 minus the driver in the pilot.
I prefer the 2018 over the 2019 and 2020 because it looks so much bigger
1:37 Exactly why Mercedes is no longer the brand it used to be. When it comes to interiors, Mercedes has been the "cutting corners" brand among the big Germans for a few years now. Not quite down at Tesla's level yet but still Audi and BMW crush Mercedes on the interior score.

Audi Q7 does not have a DVD player.
U can see the individual LEDs in the ambient light strip from the side angle which is well hidden on other Mercedes models which shows low quality
