Gray Duck had a bull calf, birth from start to finish

We have been checking her and seeing changes that tell us Gray duck is getting closer to calving. Saturday morning, she in deed started her labor. I wanted to get one of these births on video so that you all can see the birth of a calf. And to be honest, as may time as I have seen it, it never gets old and I learn something new each time. This video is not a short one, so get stuck in, and I will walk you through what going on for those who have never see a calf being born, and for those who have, watch this pro of a mom getting it done.

Thanks so much! Most people haven’t seem a calf being born before. So when Gray Duck went into labor I thought she would be a good mother to film. She is a rockstar of a mom, and great one to film. She knows the ropes and is cool with us being around for her births.

It looks cold with the snow. Why wouldn’t u have it in a clean bed in the barn.

Because that’s where she felt comfortable, our OG cows are great moms and have great instincts. The pack is a clean place. If the barn has no other animals in it; It is actually colder in the barn than outside. Also the barn all closed up can contribute to the calf developing pneumonia due to stagnant air. The weather that day was about 30 degrees so a great day for a early spring calf. She is a great mom and is quite to clean off her calf, and get it nursing. Colostrum provides the calf with not only the immunities for mom but also a warm belly that helps kick start their internal temperature.
