On January 20th, 2012, Roland hosted the final showdown of its first-ever V-Drums World Championship. Held at the House of Blues in Anaheim, California, the event coincided with the 2012 Winter NAMM Show and attracted an enthusiastic crowd of nearly 700.

The whole solo was excuted very well, and the way he incorperated the sampling of so many elements were very creative. To be honest, you sold me at 2:36. The Rhode one shots and acoustic plucks accompanied by those soft vocals, with that fusion drum lick literally left me speechless. For my taste, that was really the only part of the solo I musically enjoyed, however I respect the technicality and overall composition. But 2:36 was like a dream.

I think Jp was pretty creative here. He mixed several different genres, and even played acoustic guitar on the pads, because of that, he was all over the place; and cramming America down everyone's throat probably didn't help. The winner's solo was consistent and he did a lot of looping, which the ambient noise and accents were nice, but he shouldn't have laid down that first beat as it conflicted with some of the ones he played on the kit; tough call really.

This was truly a brilliant performance! Just the set up for all the samples was a bitch. And, the fact that we have a drummer that knows intervals, chords, and sampling, is amazing in itself. I heard the winning entry for this contest, and Mr. Bouvet was robbed of the title in my opinion. A V Drum performance does not get more clever than this guy in my opinion.

Best version of American anthem ever!!! JP rulez!!! (He should've been first, by my humble opinion. Winner just "plays drums" - he's playing like he's sitting behind acoustic set... :-/ But that's just my opinion... ;-))

I think the only reason why he might've not won the competition is because of tempo keeping in some parts and some samples. but the rest was perfect!

  • @windsofmarchjourneyperrytr2823

It's not bad at all. It's not something I'd listen to 800 times, like Al Blake's "Pensavita." Even with WAY less stuff going on, you gotta be able to play a part that's very, very simple on paper, and make it FEEL LIKE some sh*t. And in some cases, do THAT for 8:30. A lot of fast, flashy kids can't pull off a simple, believable basic four with soul to save themselves. There's a lot of music on the basic four structure, including the Phil.Collins. Not as much on crazy, unmarketable, undanceable stuff. And even so, only other drummers remember it. That's a small group.
The problem is that a lot of solo/contest stuff is made to be showy, not memorable, nor danceable. I think of Nick Mason on Pink Floyd, or Phil Collins on "In the Air Tonite." A lot of it isn't HARD to play, but they're all memorable, and most importantly, danceable. Bernard Purdie (Steely Dan) told me to make sure you could dance to it, no matter what crazy sh*t you do. Because if the young chicks in the front row aren't shaking it, you aren't getting paid. That's unacceptable. Bernard LIKES to get paid, lol. Can't go wrong with rhythmic stuff. Look at Louie Bellson or Gene Krupa. They might not be as cool as Buddy, and they both said so themselves, but damn they had danceable DOWN.
Can't go wrong with jungle drums, babe.
if it were up to me, and covers were no issue, I'd go do Pink Floyd or In the Air Tonite, making it look like more than it is with a lot of feel. I've never even HEARD OF a singing drummer in one of these contests, but that's EXACTLY where I'd go. LOTS OF drummers can out-flash me, and double pedal my butt into the ground, but I have a great feel, great hands AND I can sing. I'd go simple, rhythmic and powerful. Think Meg White with more skill and fills. More like "Lazaretto," which requires a real drummer, not me and certainly not Meg. Power and rhythm. A no-fail.

I never knew a drum solo can be so corny? From the mohawke, to the pants, to the generic metal breakdown, to the midi animal sounds, to the national anthem, to the brostep, to the stick spinning, to the lights, etc. All the gimmick boxes are ticked on this cheese.
