In this video, I'm off on a photography road trip, logging over 1000 miles across Wales and England, shooting with a Rittreck 6x6 and Rolleiflex 3.5F. The purpose of this trip was partly to test the new Hasselblad CFV100C for a review I was working on, but also just a way to grab a couple of film cameras and hit the road with no set plan in place-photography for the fun of it.
This was a trip full of surprises-broken cameras, interesting encounters, and some wild location discoveries-but overall, it was just a great reminder of what’s most important to me as a photographer.

It just shows you, that the UK can still deliver an array of unique photographic gems, if one is prepared to get off the beaten track and find them. Kyle, the UK photographic community owes you a lot. You have gone on a wonderful road trip which few locals dare to undertake. So many average UK photographers settle for the mundane and everyday, but you have revealed a hidden wonderland which few have documented. Imagine, it takes a photographer from the other side of the pond, to reveal the magic which is in our own back yard!
Cheers. Lot's to see in the UK, and half the fun is the search!
@@KyleMcDougall Ontario. I think that is in the Los Angeles area.
Bare feet. Outside in the wet Welsh winter. Steve is a living legend...
Absolutely.
I noticed that because I go barefoot in London daily
Built in Pro-mist filter on that Rollei
Haze and fungus
Kyle , I can't tell you how much I loved this video. What a serendipitous trip . Meeting Peter and Steve. And they were so ready to make you welcome and comply with what you needed. The old church was like something from a Lewis Carol story. With those watercolour walls. Don't worry about your Rolleiflex, the results from it were other worldly. I would love to shoot female portraiture in black and white, low grain film with that camera. You put your heart and soul into this journey and it paid off . I could see this video being used to teach videography lessons. Thank you so much for making this it means a lot to me. Jake E.
Thanks, Jake! Really appreciate this comment. Glad you enjoyed this one. 🙏
I actually like the "bloomyflex" photos.
I think this might by my favourite of all your videos, Kyle. Your excitement about exploring our beautiful landscape, the warmth with which you engage with people and your continued surprise at how bad our weather is. 😂 Just wonderful. Gutted about the Rollei, though - they are joyful cameras to use.
Cheers, Rich! The weather definitely keeps things interesting!
One of the best photography videos i've seen in a long time. Some absolutely amazing places and people. And done in a captivating format. My A.D.D brain can't watch videos over 6 or 7 minutes long without taking a break, i just don't have the attention span for it. But i watched the full 32.58 minutes in one go because it was that good.
Glad you enjoyed it! Was a little hesitant about making it so long, but figured I'd go for it as there was a lot to share.
@@KyleMcDougall it was worth it 👍
Kyle, don't get upset because of Rolleiflex photos - they have their own zest and their own charm. Their airly look suits perfectly for the unfamiliar or abandoned world you've captured. Thanks for sharing your wonderful trip and impressions!
I appreciate that. Cheers.
Really enjoyed this. The people you met and the images you captured were brilliant. You are doing something original and immensely watchable. You can be our own Nick Carver. 😍
Peter's Portra portrait is phenomenal.
One of my favourites.
The shot of him in his office with the window light is fantastic. Peter's cool. (The square format gives the images something. I don't know. Maybe reminds me of growing up in the '60's. Great stuff.
Starting my day with a Kyle video?! Hell yeah.
Found myself wishing you'd taken the Horseman with you as well, particularly inside the church and chapel. And, as others have commented, the blooming only detracted from some of the images; for others it was a bit of an enhancement. Thanks, Kyle.
Just some very pleasing photography. Awesome that you had the chance to meet some of these people and take their portraits too, just to remind us that behind all of these things we see in our images there are people and the lives they live. Thanks for the great watch, Kyle!
What a cool places you've found. I could spend weeks photographing on those, especially as I've had a life long project of getting b&w photos that are difficult to date if they were shot just or 50 years or more back.
I like how you combine video overview with photos. It is always nice to see the place more than just a single photo someone took. I tend to love people telling WHY they did the choices the did. The reasoning behind a photograph often gives a food for thought.
Steve! I actually like the blooming - what a find.
Kyle, your videos in which you take the viewer along are sooo inspiring. The fun of just going out and shooting really comes across, and it’s something I need to remind myself (or be reminded) of regularly. Coupled with seeing you work and set up compositions is amazing. Thanks for all the hard work that goes into making this happen! I personally would feel really weighed down by "having" to film the process too. But I’d say the end result that you put on my screen is worth it all! :)
Cheers, Rick. I appreciate that. These are the most difficult videos to shoot/edit, but also my favourite to make.
It’s such a relaxing video, I’ve been living in wales for 3 years and have yet to explore it. You’re motivating me to grab my camera and go explore.
That church discovery was stunning! The walls nearly looked water coloured, beautiful images.
Yeah, the colour in there was amazing.
The defect for coating actually gave high light diffusion effect which looks great in some of those images, amazing photos as always!
I've had this open in a tab for I think a couple of months now. I hope this video performs well for you as time goes on, this was a great one. Thanks for all you do Kyle, this was very motivating to see a professional kind of step back and just shoot for fun.
Another great video....thanks for sharing. The way you engage with the people is great to watch......how they welcome you into their space.
I appreciate that!
The Rittreck 6x6 front focus problem is most likely caused by the mirror being out of alignment. You might check to make sure nothing is keeping it from returning to the correct bottom position. If it's not all the way down, even by a fraction of a millimeter, the distance from the lens to the ground glass will be shorter than the distance to the film plane.
That's where I'll start. When the camera locked up on this shoot, the mirror also stuck up. So who knows, could be something there.
Always love your enthusiasm and commentary. This was a great video with some incredible images and portraits. Man I wish I could afford a medium format digital. The colours and definition and quality in the hands of a master are insane.
Beautiful glow on the Rollei.......will be great in BW, people pays a lot to get that glow on vintage leica Glass or the new re issue lenses, keep it and shot BW Film.
Great trip and pictures.
What a perfect way to start a saturday watching this with a cup of coffee. Thank you! Both enjoyable and inspiring
Glad you enjoyed it!
I pressed like before playing the video, I wanted to press like again after I watched, great video and photos!
Enjoyed this longer form video, well worth the 30 mins. Nice to see Aber in the mix, Wales certainly delivers photographically. Cheers.
Glad you enjoyed it
Stunning video! Thank you so much for sharing your experiences with us. Love the built in mist filter. My father’s Rolleiflex. Awesome!
3:04 That Volvo takes me back more than a few years. My dad had a Volvo 340GLT back in the mid 1980's, drove like the wind & was his most reliable car ever (that includes all the cars he's had since then up to now).
Brilliant video - really enjoyed watching the amazing places and people that you photographed making some wonderful images!
Re: your Rolleiflex lens:, this may be a useful data point::: I had a 1936 Rolleicord Art Deco w/ f4.5 Triotar lens (a uncoated Cooke Triplet). With no coatings, my photos never exhibited that “veiling glare” that you experienced.
I’m guessing: your lens has some haze (possibly oil mist?) or fungus. I don’t know if the glass could be restored. I suspect: yes.
My point is: if the coatings aren’t in good shape after restoration, and the glass is good, the camera may function very well.
Twice, as you were preparing to use the Rolleiflex, I could hear the familiar, comforting sound of the waist-level VF unfolding.
That’s quite the trip. It seems that new H’blad works pretty well.
Thx. And good luck from Victoria, BC.
That abandoned building with all that growth, chipped walls, and peeling peeling paint! Pretty amazing 😮
Those little garages are exactly what you’d hope to find in those small Welsh towns. Very cool trip.
Such an enjoyable watch! Felt like joining along on the discoveries, thanks man 👍
🙏 Thanks for watching.
Studied in Aberystwyth in the first part of the last decade. I absolutely loved it there, so it was very cool to see you stop by!
I live in Manchester UK and I have just purchased a Rolleiflex Automat and you've gave me alot of inspo to get myself to Wales! Only a couple of hour's drive. Great video thank you!
That 2nd garage looks like my father's garage: Such a nice cool mess! Hahaha
Honestly... The bloom on the Rolleiflex taking lens adds to each shots character in my opinion! Almost desirable even! Fantastic video, always an inspiration!!
This video was top drawer!
Got goose bumps when seeing the church inside, thank you Kyle
Wonderful trip with, imo, great photos
This was an excellent video mate. I remember visiting an old filling station back in 1994, when I drove my old Austin A55 to it so I could take some photos. It was somewhere in North Essex, but I can't remember exactly. The garage has probably gone now, as they had stopped selling fuel. I used my Rolleiflex 3.5E. I've got a 500px account. I'm currently uploading all my nice film stuff from the 70s , 80s and 90s.
I really don't know how you could make a better video than this one. Bravo.
Man, even with the focus issue, those pics of Peter are wonderful; environmental portraits are the best and you captured something special.
Thank you.
So beautiful, so relaxing.. this is the life that I want for me when I get retired.
Amazing stuff! Thanks for sharing… 👍🏻🙂
wow! amazing photo shoot
Your best video yet and I love the characters you met. Fantastic stuff Kyle.
Thanks! Enjoyed your video.
Amazing work Kyle! I’ll have to watch this one a few times I think. I’d be really keen to hear your current digital editing workflow and presets you are using. Some of those Hassy shots were pretty close to film and looked amazing!
Cheers. I'm sure at some point in the future I'll make an updated workflow video.
Thanks for taking us along, Kyle. Your back road adventures look strikingly similar to my adventures in Iowa. Old cars, signs, gas stations....what else does a guy need?
This was just an incredible video, with many great photographs. Really inspires me to plan a photo road trip of my own this summer, perhaps on a motorcycle to see what the Finnish countryside has to offer. Thank you, Kyle!
Brilliant video. It has been a while since 30min youtube video felt so short :)
Another inspiring video Kyle!
Ah, Aber and Mach, my old manor. Some lovely work there, Kyle. 😍
One of your best videos Kyle, thank you for taking us on that journey as well. (those Canadian plates!!!)
Thanks, Daniel.
Enjoyed this vid a lot! Thank you 🙏🏻
Fantastic images
this has been just lovely. thanks for bringing us along. If this becomes a photobook, count me in!
Beautiful video, Kyle. What a great adventure. While it wasn't intended, the bloom from the Rolleiflex adds something original to some of the photos, in my opinion. Great stuff!
In my humble opinion your best video so far, final images, video, locations.Well done ! Thank you for sharing with us !
Thank you!
The rollei is not damaged. You just bought one with the pro mist conversion. Haha.
One of the best film vlogs/docus i've seen. Great work and thank you!
The enjoyment and relaxation that you obviously got from this trip certainly shows in the photographs Kyle. To me, they are some of your best shots since being in the UK. The subject matter and the people you met are a joy and you didn't let the disappointment of the faulty camera get you down either. Certainly going out with no expectations worked wonders for you. Nice to see you in my neck of the woods too! Peterston Super Ely and Llysworney; both just down the road from where I live. Should have recommended them to you really after your recent videos.
Thanks, Kevin. I'll be back to Peterston Super Ely to visit the garage again. Such a great place.
Such a cool video. Loved it
these pictures are amazing, the work keeps getting better
I know you talked about the focus on the portraits of the gentleman in the gas station. but those images stand on great composition alone.
Good colors, great exposure.
Thank you
So much to photograph, just so inspiring! Love every scene and every image you took. I truly enjoyed watching this episode. Thanks for sharing!
Really enjoyed this one Kyle, mega job!!
Glad you enjoyed it!
The portraits are gorgeous focus issue or not. Nice lighting on that last setup. Love the second to last one.
Awesome as usual Kyle. Portrait shots were lovely. Great adventure. Thanks for bringing us along!!
Love your travel videos, still watch your old ones from time to time
The misty "effect" works quite well in those images. Not what you would want most of the time, but it fits those subjects! Pity that the 3.5F isn't up to snuff. But normally I would think a Rolleiflex (3.5F or 2.8F) to be a reliable, no-nonsense option.
Sean that has to be the best explanation I’ve ever heard and has made me think much more about this and will definitely apply a much more balanced approach hereon 🙏 thank you
Nicely done, Kyle. I appreciate all the effort you put in to make these videos for us. Very inspiring.
Worth watching on a Saturday afternoon. Those hazy shots from Rolleiflex didn't look that bad. Hi from Toronto! Keep up the good work, always looking forward to new videos
Inspiring
Thoroughly enjoyed this one man, love the subject choices and just following along in general. Great stuff 👌
Awesome video. Great stops along the way. Love the old garages and gentlemen, the old church is incredible. Dang on camera gear issues. Lesson learned, bring backup cameras. Nice shots, satisfying trip for sure. Just go and shoot whatever. Result: Gems.
What a great trip. You looked like a kid is a sweet shop!
Doing another solo road trip this spring from Chicago area to the Savanna Ga area to visit family. Like you, looking forward to make stops along the way to stop at places that catch my eye and capture some memories. I have a general plan to see some waterfalls as well as the Smokey Mountains.
What a treat to watch your video today. Enjoyed it very much! Happy Easter from Ontario! (Loved those old license plates❤
love seeing you travel through and photograph my home country, great video. More road trip videos please!
Very very enjoyable video. Wonderful locations and some of the best found by accident. I had a similar experience of the old church you found. A few years back I found an old Methodist Chapel, hidden away in fields. Such a brilliant photo location it was . Many thanks and best wishes.
Wonderful video production. I enjoy watching every single seconds of this video. Thank you for sharing this beautiful photograph trip with us. 🙏
Another wonderful adventure thank you for the ongoing inspiration :).
This is one of the best photography videos I have seen in a long long time. Dare I say right up there with the old Masters. Loved it!!
🙏
Brother, these are all wonderful
🙏
Love this video. Many thanks for the inspiration!
Fabulous
Really great video, a pleasure to see ... and great photos too ... thanks for sharing !!!
Kyle this must be your most content rich video. Congrats!
Very inspiring Kyle... thanks! Great video, love the images 👌
Amazing video! Good places and people. Alse great photos. Thank you for sharing.
My man. Gorgeous work, thanks for taking us along for the ride! I’m terrified of asking folks for portraits - any tips?
Cheers. I always have a conversation and get to know the person a little first, then ask. You can usually get a pretty good feel if they'd be ok with it or not.
Great project. Wonderful
I'd assume the focusing issues have to do with the Ground glass/Focusing screen. This happens on my Canon 800D with my 85mm 1.8 because the tolerance is not as high as a higher end camera . Normally you can micro adjust the lens to adapt to the alignment of the focusing screen. You can't do that here so you'd have to get the focusing screen/ground glass adjusted to the correct height
that was marvelous!
Love the abandoned churches
Great video Kyle 🤯My favorite shot is the sunny Mirage @29:17 with the faulty Rolleiflex. Photography is not all about sharpness and megapixles its also about emotions and "feel" Thats why Ive gone back to analog lot recently
