  • In episode 16 of The Farm Hand's Companion Show, Pa Mac demonstrates the basic ins and outs of growing a vegetable garden, including laying off rows, planting, and cultivating the garden plot using all types of methods: Human power, draft animals, tractors, and tillers. Learn a little about soil fertility and soil improvement using homemade fertilizers, dealing with threats to your garden plants (ever try to keep deer or crows out of your garden?), as well as three basic purposes of an organic vegetable garden for the small farm or homestead.
Be sure and subscribe to the Farm Hand's Companion channel to keep up with the progress as Pa Mac takes an undeveloped piece of property and turns it into a small subsistence farm. Watch for new episodes as often as Pa Mac can crank 'em out and still run a small farm. (As long as he's alive and kicking, he's most assuredly farming and filming!)
Also visit www.farmhandscompanion.com to find articles, posts, photographs, and encouragement for today's self-sufficient farm or homestead. (And be sure to check out the General Store for books or DVD's by Pa Mac at www.farmhandscompanion.com/gen...)

When I was apprenticed at a nursery , the first job was hoeing and , strangely enough , the advice was the same , you're out here all summer , use all of the handle . As it turned out , it was a great way of learning about the different plants . Great video 👍🇬🇧

I always laugh a lot watching your videos but it's not just fun, there's so much precious info with it. I didn't expect it would be the scarecrow that set off the alarm. Now we're in fantasyland and it was a poetic, surreal and unexpected "dénouement".

When sowing seed, back in the day here in England, the saying was

Land is a real form of generational wealth. It provides your descendants with the capacity to carve out an existence and an income for themselves. Combined with time, effort and knowledge, a family can go far. It was a real treat to see your family pitching in at the beginning. There's mroe to learn form this video than just gardening. Thanks for your efforts, I'd love to see your channel grow more in the coming years.

I am so pleased to see you post again I have been waiting (somewhat impatiently I admit) for a new one. I understand why it takes you a while to put them out with all of the work you put into each one, I can't imagine how may days it takes you to make a video. Thank you for sharing I enjoyed it tremendously and it brought a smile to my face after a very long work day. It makes me want to get into my garden again, but of course I have to wait till winter is passed. I will probably watch this one again in January as a gentle reminder that winter will pass at some time.

I absolutely enjoy watching your videos. Not only are they reminders of the old ways that I grew up knowing and gotten so many ideas that I have been able to incorporate into my current sustainable practices, they remind me of the old Charlie Chapman movies I grew up watching. Absolutely hilarious and definitely a choking hazard if I happen to be watching while eating. 😂😂😂😂

Oh how I remember helping my Aunt on Grandma's farm in the kitchen garden, she could lift a tomato worm with the hoe, drop it in the walk path and chop that thing in two before you could blink lol. She taught me how to use the push plow, check for corn smut and what to do about it, make kitchen scrap compost, so thankful for those days, and not just the work but the peace and quiet on those summer days, except of course if the Cicadas were 'singing' then that's all you could hear lol.

Rewatching this video and I noticed one of the old pictures at the beginning comes from a cotton farm in Mississippi County Arkansas near Blytheville my home town. That is a well circulated picture of a land owner weighing cotton sacks back when cotton was still picked by hand. The land owner’s family name is Nelson and this picture was taken in the early 1900s near Half Moon, AR! Glad you included it in your video!

I have so thoroughly enjoyed watching your videos. Some, ok - most of them I've watched several times. You are right when you said much knowledge was passed down word of mouth to the next generation. Problem is my parents didn't want to farm and thought livin' in the city was success. So, I grew up eating tv dinners, Betty Crocker cakes and food out of tin cans. Today there is a growing trend of people wanting to grow their own food but those who could teach them are gone or up in years. I thank the good Lord for people like you who want to pass on knowledge. I know I'm missing a lot with videos, magazines and books instead of hands on instruction but I'm trying hard to learn through trial and error. I'm no spring chicken but if my grands have a prayer of learning I've got to learn and hope they keep on going after me. With that said I took a huge leap of faith and moved from 20 years of backyard tiny gardening to 30 acres of brush, briers and trees. Not sure if that was a smart move considering I'm 62 years old but it was a smart move for my grands. I might die just trying to get the land ready but the grands and my sons can take it over and make it a small farm, if they chose. Thank you so much for all you do to teach others. You are a blessing and I appreciate you. ~Sherrie in South Carolina

I have a memory to share! I would watch my grandfather sow seeds by hand in his garden . He never bent down, that I can remember. He held the seeds near his waist in front of him real steady, and walked right above the prepared row, which was a shallow trench with some soil mounded up on both sides. Dropping the seeds one by one or several at a time, they fell right in front of his feet into the trench. He then kicked dirt over the seeds with one foot , then the next seeds with the other foot, alternating as he walked. He barely made any extra movements with his feet, just the little kick and then stepped on the covered seeds and kept going. He seemed to have a knack for minimizing the time and physical labor, because he had a lot to do.
