Pa Mac three years ago up north we picked apples from old forgotten homestead trees. That was the best apple sauce we ever made! Hope to put trees on our new property. My favorite is Winesap and I plan on one tree just for me! Ok maybe I'll share. Greetings from NC!

I always love your videos. I often watch them with my three youngest sons. Many of the things in them make me wish I had learned more from my own grandfather or even been able to share them with my own father who had died over nine years ago. Great videos that incorporate humor and knowledge!

Very interesting and many new varieties I never heard of before.
The apples should bear fruit this year!!! When this episode first came out I’ve been anticipating every year to see how they turn out I was 14 when this episode came out and I’ve been waiting ever since!

Man I sure enjoy the vids. We planted a lot of different varieties a few years back. Peach, mulberry, persimmon, orange and lime, tangerine and lots of pecan and walnut trees. Oh yea, tons of blueberries too, briar berries, black berries, raspberries and grapes. I was raised like yourself w a grandma and grandpa that grew everything and my wife and I are trying to get back to that way of life. Simple and good eating. I’ve always farmed and grown gardens, but something special ab fruit trees and berries
A few original homested orchards are still around in western states. They usually included apples and plums. Sometimes plums can be found in fence rows and a few surviving ragged apple trees identify old homestead locations.

Good video. I too knew a 90 year old apple farmer, he had 100 acres of apple trees The fruit was so good. We can do so many things with them apples. Time to cook. Sub too.

Pa Mac, great video. I just did the same thing a few weeks back, except I used dwarf trees, not semi dwarf. We have lots of deer around us as well, so I ended up fencing around my trees with cement remesh wire at five foot tall. I also planted a couple peach trees. Thanks for all your videos, I enjoy and appreciate them.

Love your videos Pa Mac! We just discovered some very old apple trees back in the forest of some property we recently bought - so delicious. We are hoping to graft them to create some more trees. Did you ever get your pole barn built? I've been waiting for the follow up videos!
here's a tip, "plant" a carp under each tree instead of the dirt mound! my cox's pippin went balistic!

Great information love the proverbs makes me want to plant today. If only I had a tree. I started seedlings 2 years ago using seeds from "pink lady" apples in hopes to graft a heirloom to them have you ever tried this and any tips. Thanks for the great video.

Alas, this is not on the "apple tree" subject at all, so please forgive me. I enjoy hearing all the nice clawhammer banjo and fiddle tunes that accompany the videos... Do you think you'd ever get the hankering to knock together a banjo? A gourd one could fun, and sounds mellow, to boot. I have made a few beater-banjoes, and they are hard to mess up. (And if you do, you just give it to some distant relative, that you rarely visit so you don't have to ever see it again!) Have a happy new year, and keep building; I like those videos! Was that Blacktwig actually Mammoth Blacktwig? I've got one planted and can't wait for it to fruit. I would like to recommend you add an Arkansas Black. Their delicious and store extremely well.

How are your apple trees doing? Are they getting enough sunlight on the east, south , and west sides? Have they blossomed yet?
Grimes Golden is known to be a good pollinator of most varieties of apples but if you planted a variety that doesn't have a pollinator, you won't get any apples. Some wild crabapples may do the job. Used to find a list of varieties online and what other variety they will pollinate and what variety you need to pollinate them. I can no longer find that website. You did not explain that important fact. In the northern states, we like Northern Spy for the best pies, Cortland for salads because they stay white when cut, and Macintosh for eating.

I hope you don't mind my asking, but when you say a northward slope, do you mean it faces north? I just read that north facing slopes collect more moisture and south facing slopes see more sun. Had never thought about what impact that would have on plants until this video.
Kamagawa Yes, Kamagawa, it's facin' north.
Don't know about the moisture collection notion (that probably depends on many other things) but the simple fact is a north facing slope would not receive the full force of the sun's rays.

The horse apple heirloom doesn't taste as sweet as some of the others, but it's a near sight better than the ones you've been use to.

your videos are nicely done and instructive, however, you are a proper forests killer. killing nature own fruits in the name of agriculture, trees these days are way more important than your crops etc. you should give a good example and make a video about planting forest trees. as a remedy to all those you killed. please stop cutting trees at every occasion to make videos showing how to make a barn or a tiny house. trees deserve much more respect, stop killing them for jesus christ.

To harvest a tree is not killing a forest any more than pickin' a tomato is killing your garden. Our "worldview" have much to do with how we think about these things, however. I'm all for plantin' trees, but in my particular environment it's not necessary. On my property, many more trees sprout and grow than what I take in a given year. With my own biblical worldview, it would be less than good stewardship to NOT harvest any and use 'em for good purposes. Though I have an utmost respect for trees and all of creation, It is God and His sovereignty over His creation that deserves respect...and not the creation alone.
