Building an Old-fashioned Log Chicken House, Part 2 - Walls & Roof - The FHC Show, ep 17

  • In this latest episode #17 of The Farm Hand's Companion Show, Pa Mac continues a 4-part series on building a larger old-fashioned log chicken house from materials found on the homestead, using simple, self-sufficient, and sustainable methods-along with both modern and old hand tools in an attempt to keep and raise poultry. Several types of common log notches are shown, as well as how to make rafters out of peeled pine poles. Pa Mac also sets up his homemade lumber operation again to make chainsaw mill lumber in preparation for installing wood shingle or wood shake roofing.
    Be sure and subscribe to the Farm Hand's Companion channel to keep up with the progress as Pa Mac takes an undeveloped piece of property and turns it into a small subsistence farm. Watch for new episodes as often as Pa Mac can crank 'em out and still run a small farm. (As long as he's alive and kicking, he's most assuredly farming and filming!)
    Also visit www.farmhandscompanion.com to find articles, posts, photographs, and encouragement for today's self-sufficient farm or homestead. (And be sure to check out the General Store for books or DVD's by Pa Mac at www.farmhandscompanion.com/gen...)

    My husband and I just moved to 27 of acres in W North Carolina. We are trying to live as off-the-land as possible. We are going to try and build a small log cabin for our goats first, then hopefully for ourselves.thank you for generously sharing your wisdom. It is truly priceless.

    You might consider the use of a "spud" when peeling logs. It's much saver than the use of an axe and faster. I hope you seasoned your rafters prior to raising them. Another suggestion: peeling the bottom sill logs helps to limit the invasion and infestation of grubs, ants and the like. I'm glad to see that you are helping resurrect the old ways of doing for oneself that was most common in my youth.

I really enjoy your videos. I hope you caulk between the logs carefully to help keep unwanted critters like skunks, weasels, etc. out of the log chicken house. I've been looking forward to your next video and I really enjoyed watching this. I just built my kids a playhouse last fall and when you got to the rafters I vividly remembered that moment when I too had to build a jig. I used standard lumber but a lot of the techniques and methods are the same. I really enjoy the fact that what you build is sourced in such a way that one could truly do it themselves. that sense of self reliance is what is inspiring to me.

    Don't recall the last time I was this excited to watch another man work.
    I think you should be happy with the new Stihl. My dad's had one since the 70s and it still hums right along. Thought about getting one myself, but to my surprise Dad said don't. He figures that if I need any cutting done, he can do it being only a 3 1/2 hour drive away. I think he gets a little too excited to have an excuse to do some cutting. "Besides," he said, "when I'm gone you'll get this one." Can't argue with that logic.

    • @farmhandscompanion
      @farmhandscompanion  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Actually Jason, the broad axe is easier for me.
      The heavier weight of the axe head gives momentum for the peel (just kind of lettin' it drop on the pole). Plus I don't have to bend over, or lift the pole higher to use with the drawknife.
