  • The word Karma, in common usage, denotes the consequences (usually bad) of some past action. While this is true as far as it goes, Karma is much more than impersonal retribution based on balancing the cosmic account book. Activity - which is the real meaning of Karma - is part of being human. We are in constant activity (thinking is activity too!); and, out of necessity, our actions sometimes violate the letter of the law - how can we be non-violent when practicality compels us to kill a mosquito or a rattlesnake?
Does it mean we are doomed to be either ridiculously impractical or the perpetual target of a cosmic accountant doling out karmic retribution?
Subtle is the Lord, malicious He is not (Einstein). The intention with which we act is more important than the actual deed. True practice of non-violence involves removal of the desire to kill. By going beyond the outward form we learn to recognize the underlying inner compulsion. This is first and most important step towards real spiritual transformation. The endpoint and the polestar is nishkam karma - desireless action - where all of our energy is offered in service of God.
