I was a teacher for 33 years. You are very good at explaining complex ideas. This is the best description of the process of marrying a gps to a map that I have seen. Thanks.
Wow, thank you!
Very timely video for me. Just broke down and bought my first GPS unit. Totally forgot about the the datums and you brought that link to topo maps together. So now I have the correct datum in my GPS and won't be cursing in the field wondering why the GPS map is 200m off the NTS map. Thanks!
Thanks for the comment. This video is important for me. When GPS units first came out I was doing field work and I got significantly messed up by the shift in datums. It was a good early lesson for me.
Thank you so much ! I've been looking for such a video for months. I teach navigation with the french Alpine Club and I will strongly recommand it !
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks for the demo really helpful for me. Just learning this map reading and got a 65s gps.
Thanks for commenting. Enjoy the new GPS and have fun out there!
I have always known that you can use a GPS to find your location on a map, but never how. When I asked I was always told to read the manual that came with the unit. Not very helpful. So when the batteries in my gps exploded I did not replace it. Now I can see the value in have one again. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
I am so glad you found this helpful.
Dear Sir, I really really like your navigational videos. They are very well made and explanatory. Looking forward to seeing more of these (if you please).
New to your Chanel 😊
Glad you like them! Thanks, and welcome to the channel.
Excellent explanations. Thanks
Glad you liked it.
That was a fantastic explanation. Thanks !
Glad you liked it.
Well done, one trick with remembering which UTM value comes first is “in the door, and up the stairs”. 😂 Just a note that those Etrex batteries last a heck of a long time, my little etrex 20 anyway. Even in the cold they just last.
Thanks! I find that on a long (~ 2 week) canoe trip, with moderate use of the GPS (ie. turning it on a couple times a day but mostly off) that I need to replace the batteries at least once on the trip.
This was awesome. I have been a map guy for yrs and still learned something. Good explanation.
Glad it was helpful!
Excellent video, Kevin. Great explanations and very clear, this will help those not familiar with map and compass work.
Thanks Craig, I am enjoying making these.
You explain this so well. I’ve enjoyed the series tremendously. Thanks for making these. I’m wondering which compass you use that you like best.
Thanks, I have 3 old Silva Ranger 15s which I like a lot but one list a mirror, one has a giant bubble and the one in this video has a big chip out of the cover. The new Silva's aren't as good as the ones made 20 years ago, so you can expect a compass review video in the coming future.
Great video. I really need to learn how to use my GPS to its fullest
Thanks, I hope this helps.
I love your jacket, what’s the brand
Thanks, the jacket is made by Marmot.
