      Thanks, you can ignore grid north entirely but it is so nice to be able to use those lines to align your compass when working in the middle of the map.

    Great explanation for navigation. Useful for all map reading, especially when doing intersection and resections. The more skills you take into the bush, the less gear you need. This is another great tool for the toolbox. The difference on a degrees compass is not overly problematic if you are only moving within a few kilometers at at time.

      Thanks Craig, yes I think I want to follow up with a video on compass accuracy. One degree error only sets you off 1/60th your distance travelled. So if you travel 1km you will be off 16.6m. it all depends on what you are doing, but for simple navigation over short distances you can even ignore the variation of GN and TN.

    Yeah, this was the best explanation of GN and TN I've seen on TH-cam! I love map reading and navigation and this helped me remember all the stuff I've forgotten over the years since sadly dedicating my time to a new career instead of the hiking and Bushcraft I would spend all of my free time learning, practicing and living!

    It’s funny that you made this video. I have been looking into this for a few weeks and have also felt that there wasn’t a lot of good information. It took me a while to understand this. Great job explaining this! But my question for you is do the map makers rotate the map to align it with true north. I know you briefly touched on this, but wanted to make sure I understood. I have maps that the map is aligned with true north and others that are aligned with Grid North (All have UTM Grid lines). It’s easy enough to adjust for the declination. But I feel like one or the other Would have to be rotated to align with Grid or True. Thank you!

      The maps really aren't rotated by the map maker. The map maker just sets the extent of the map to align with true north. Think of it this way, a map on the central meridian is cut out from the surface of the globe to align with True North. To do the same for the next map over, the globe needs to be spun a little bit and then a new map is cut out in the same orientation. When you spin the globe back it looks like the second map is on a slight angle but it is on a round earth so it actually points to true north just like the first map. If the edge of your map aligns with grid north it is likely that it is close to the central meridian of the UTM zone. Like I said in the video, with all the cottage industry map makers out there you could get maps that behave differently. Read all you can in the margins of the map or contact the maker if you have more questions.

      My best advice is to adjust for declination separately and then do a second adjustment for Grid North.

    Thanks for the great video! Historically, I've always adjusted for magnetic declination but never factored in for grid north.
    Would this summery be accurate?
    1) Adjust compass to maps designated magnetic declination.
    2)Take bearing from point A to Point B
    3)Adjust compass for grid north deviation. (For example-if the maps states GN is 2 degrees West, i would adjust my bearing 2 degrees east)
    4)I'm now set to navigate from my map

      That's the basic steps. I would say you haven't actually taken your bearing until you have the bezel pointing to true north in relation to the map. But yes, (first adjust for magnetic north) then put the direction of travel arrow in the direction you want to go, match the orienting lines to the UTM grid, then adjust for the angle of the UTM grid lines by adjusting the bezel. Then you have your bearing.

    If I don't have an adjustable compass and say declination is 15 degrees East and Grid North is 2 degrees West, can I just adjust 13 degrees East? Is that correct?

    have an adjustable compass - setting it to magnetic north is easy but nowhere, until now, could I find an explanation on why and how to further adjust for the the variation associated with grid north. Thanks a million!
    One outstanding question: as is often the case with provincial park maps and the like, they don't have declination diagrams. Is it okay to navigate without further adjusting for grid north? Magnetic declination is easy to find on the internet, grid north is not.

      Great question. A good map should indicate true north and the side edges of that map should also align with true north. Sometimes for maps showing small areas or strange shapes like long linear features the map might be printed in a way where the edges don't align with true north, it should specify true north. In either case you can simply use the true north and adjust your declination for your location. There is no need to worry about grid north if there are no transverse Mercator grids on the map.

      Kevin, one more question: after taking a field bearing (having previously adjusted the compass for magnetic declination) in order to determine your location on a map do you have to account for grid north (GN)? If so, is this done by turning the bezel west for a westerly GN and east for an easterly GN?

      @@44262 I gather you are sighting a landmark with the compass to help find your location on the map with triangulation? No, you can ignore the grids on the map. You can ignore the grids all the time unless you want to use them to help you align the compass to the map. Again, you can always use the edge of the map for that but the edge is often far from where you are.

    I watch your other two videos often. I am confused as to why you would alter the compass to True North and not use Grid. The most accurate method is to use the GMA. Adjusting the opposite way makes more sense and is in your other video. Big fan but confused a little.

      I am just trying to break it down. In this video I pretended that Magnetic North didn't exist so I am just adjusting for one thing not two at once. Neither method is more accurate as long as you compensate for both Grid North and Magnetic North you are good.

      Agreed, I don't really get the rolling church analogy but I agree the user needs to understand both GN and MN. I have another video on MN and this one was about GN and why it differs from TN.@anolakes
