Right? Founder of amelia island concourse ... I loved how he just casually slid that a governor or congressman casually helped him out.. Lol he forsure runs in some better circles then I do.
I go to Cuba a couple of weeks every year. If you know the right people, relationships forged over time, there are a number of absolute original 50s cars kicking around. Hard to find, but they exist. I went over a 57 Ford Sunliner a few years ago in Havana near Revolution Square. I could find nothing about it that wasn't original Ford. Incredible restoration.
Very, very rare. My dad got talking to a Cuban guy on Facebook who has a bone stock '55 Crown Victoria, even has the 292 Y-block in it still. He gets a lot of parts from Canada and Australia.
As Canadian we go to Cuba often. Around Varadero we see new Chev and Dodge trucks, Audi, VW, and Mercedes. Majority are 50s car and most appear to have been sitting in the ocean for 50 years. Very nice people.
Back in 2006 or so I spent 10 days in Havana doing some training at their vaccine plant. Every day they drove us from the hotel in Miramar to the plant out in the middle of the sugar plantations in a late-90s Chrysler Grand Voyager (3rd gen I think). The coolest thing was every lunch they drove us to their hospitality building, which must have been an early-20th century plantation owner's house, in a variety of 1970s and 1980s US or Canadian school buses. Lots of little Fiat/Polski 126s there as well - on one trip into the plant one got stuck in a pothole a couple of cars ahead of us, so a couple of guys waiting on the side of the road just ran over and lifted it out. Just about everything there has a diesel engine - at rush hour the stench of low-quality diesel fumes was pretty overpowering.
I went to Havana in June 2017. I saw that Bonneville convertible in person. It has an inline 5 engine today. Quite creative engineering to keep those cars running.
Finally some VinWiki instead of hear more corona news everywhere thank you guys for the videos we need a distraction from all the bad that's happening!!
Cuba has heart and spirit like no other. I wouldn’t say that they have nothing because they’re poor. They don’t have access because they’ve been denied access. Still a cool video.
the part about Russian tractor motors reminds me of the beginning of Fast 8 where Vin Diesel mentions that the car he's looking at has a Boat Motor in it lol
I like how he talks about “If your in a Communist country then everybody’s watching you”. Dude, ever heard of the Patriot Act? Our shit government does the same thing
As a cuban I go to cuba to visit family often. There’s actually pretty new cars that you can rent when you arrive to the airport. My dad went this past summer and he rented a 2017 Mercedes GLC. There are new cars but gas is scarce so if you see a newer car it’s rented by someone who is a tourist.
I loved that show Cuban chrome. Hope someone does something like that down there. Crazy how they kept these cars going with any part they could find or make.
I stayed in Cuba for some months... lived in San Jose, about 30min or so from Havana.. I went to Havana frequently. Immediately you get to Cuba, its like you are in the 70's .... it's all old school.
jerry seinfeld called these classics, to which bill burr said that theyve been driviing those cars for fifty years theyre not classics theyre probably sick of them.
I'm not sad to hear how these rare classics get modified with the "wrong" motor or parts or sit in a state of decay because it's history and that's important. The ones that live on tho are gorgeous 😍
I’m the son of Cuban exiles and I travel to the island quite often as I love the culture and the people , in if there is something I learned is that the wealth is still there it’s just hidden now , people that you think don’t have it , have it
I guess I’m just a kid cause some of the 50-60s car that were shown I automatically attached eyes to the windshield and imagine em like the Disney car movie.
as a canadian going to cuba is easy and canadians love it there cuba has an amazing charm about it. Americans need to calm down about cuba they are no threat to you they may still be a communist country but americans up until recently have gotten along fine with china. Cubans are great people
5:21, he says the newest American car out there was the 61 pink Pontiac. But there's a 2005-ish Ford Ranger behind it, and it doesn't look like the Mazda based model at the time (they had shorter grilles and headlights. Maybe it came after he last saw the Pontiac?
@@boxedfender4810 it could be either US or Canadian spec, but a lot of US cars end up in the Middle East, and it's very possible that the importer that brings cars to Cuba has access to those Middle Eastern auction blocks, as well as auctions in Mexico and other nearby countries where US cars may end up in.
I went to Cuba in 2015, believe it or not, theres a Porsche 356 knocking around that someone drives daily. Saw it a few times. It's pretty rough though 😥
Daddy saw one of the t.v. series about cars in Cuba and said he felt sorry for all those have to live under such oppression. Of course he’s a tad biased because his U.S.A.F. Reserve Unit went on alert during the Cuba Missile Crisis. He was an armorer/J-57 engine mechanic assistant on the F-100’s.
Yeah, Cuba no longer represents a threat to the US, so I guess the embargo lift is long overdue and let them open up to the world in full force. Maybe that way we can ship them the parts to restore those classics and they can teach us how to be as resourceful as they are.
@@joesshows6793 their economy can't go any lower. If anything, the embargo will have them on par with the Dominican Republic in terms of economic development.
If Cuba allowed Facebook, all the cars from FB Marketplace would be gone (and on the way to Cuba). As resourceful as Cubans have become, if all of them created "how to" YT channels, the citizens could get rid of the communist leaches
Fast & Furious got some parts of it right!
It's not car culture it's called survival.
If I stumbled upon a 300SL like that I would lose my mind!
only in a us-sanctioned country. cuba is the only example for that right now.
i would have been attempting to buy it haha
That's what I was thinking. That 300SL would turn into a Gem if any of us got a hold of it.
The Cuba 300 SL is well known since decades. Thousands of offers. Not sold.
lamberko how much were they offering do you know?
Last time I was this early, Top Gear was the best version of Top Gear we had. Now we have Car Trek!
