  • Rapid River is one of the must-fish rivers of Maine for the serious angler seeking brook trout and landlocked salmon. An excellent place to seek solitude and nature.
Rapid River is approximately 5 miles located in the northwestern portion of the state of Maine flowing from Lower Richardson Lake to Umbagog Lake. The river holds landlocked salmon, brook trout and, unfortunately, smallmouth bass, which is an invasive species. If you happen to catch any smallmouth bass, please harvest the fish to reduce the threat reduction to the brook trout, which it feeds on.
Louis Dickinson wrote a few books while living on the Rapid River - one of them called "We Took to the Woods." A few popular Maine flies were developed near this river, including Carrie Steven's Grey Ghost and Herb Welch's Black Ghost.
Check out Bob Mallard's "50 Places - Fly Fishing the Northeast" for some excellent information on about the river, including access, flies and species.

If you all get the chance, read the book
"We Took to the Woods" by Louise Dickinson Rich. Life along the Rapid River in around the 1930's.

I ice fished umbagog with my hard side shanty last winter near the big island and those smallmouth aren't going anywhere....
Caught some up 20" this winter
State record is 23 1/2" and I'm pretty sure the new record is swimming around in there...
Landed hundreds of smallies over the winter and only two brook trout and one salmon
Lots of fallfish and some 12"+ yellow perch
If you want steady action on slabs....
    It's world class action
It's a little different fishing 12' or less all the time tho... Subtle nuances

Don't want to give away too much information, but were you above or below the pond? Excellent videos!

Thanks. Love that river. I fished above and below the pond. I enjoyed the above better, but didn’t get to explore as much below as I would’ve liked.

Great place to fish. It's a shame that the bass got in there. Hopefully fisherman continue keeping enough of them to keep the population down.

Had a blast there. Can’t wait to get back. I hope the Smallmouth don’t overrun that place.

No large brook trout the place is really going downhill.

How is “large” defined? What did it used to be? The Salmon fishing was excellent.
