EPIC Bluefin Tuna Trip on the Polaris Supreme - Part I, Day 1|#tuna #offshore #fishing
Part I, Day 1 of the Epic offshore Bluefin Tuna Trip in the Pacific Ocean out of San Diego, CA.

The first 7 or 8 hours had us heading to the tuna grounds. The trip started with our check-in at Seaforth Landing near Mission Bay where we bought some last-minute gear at the tackle shop and then loaded our kit onto the Polaris Supreme.
The boat was in great shape and the crew was excellent. The Captains put us on fish and it was obvious that they wanted us to catch fish as much as we did. Once the sun went down, the Captain located the schools and talked us onto the fish, including the depth, which we were able to drop our 200-300g jigs within the strike zone due to the braid colors indicating a new color every 100 feet. If our braid wasn't colored, the crew helped us color the braid so we could keep our jigs within the zone that the Captain continuously indicated over the loudspeaker.
The crew helped us with knots, jigs, rigs and sorting out our tangles. It was obvious they wanted to help us catch fish. They worked hard for the customers and it showed. The Chefs in the kitchen fixed us up some excellent meals and they lent a hand on the deck when not in the kitchen.

I have never fished the West Walker before, what campground was this. I have some bad knees but it doesn't stop me but I do need to pick my battles when it comes to water flow.
I can’t remember but you can probably find the answer on the California Department of Fish and Wildlife. I think there are a few roadside stops along the river to try out. Good luck!

No. Tight line nymphing is better. Just make sure your nymphs have enough weight to get down quickly.

Glad you enjoyed it. Hope you can find some enjoyment of the river as I did. Find a spot near any part of the river and observe the fish surfacing in the evening. They will be there during the day, too!

Mind sharing any details of where to try in the area? Headed there in a week.
Try all of the openings along the Golden Road. The Salmon move depending on water temp and season. I went back to that same spot a month later and skunked. Key is to get the nymphs down in the water column. I would recommend a good floating indicator with a tandem nymph rig in deeper water during the day and dries during the evening for hatches. However, some of these salmon took to my dry fly indicator during the day. Good luck!
