  • Is a fiberglass fifth wheel right for you? Aunt Sharon and Uncle Jon give us a tour of their 21 foot 2018 Escape 5.0 TA fifth wheel trailer with DIY modifications and storage hacks.
We left behind our careers in Dallas Texas for life off the grid in the woods of Vermont. Here, we experience new rewards and challenges, living in a travel trailer while setting up water, power, and a yurt on the side of a mountain. Charles plans and executes our DIY projects. Jill is our TH-cam videographer. #rvlife

Very nice video. We have the same rig, a 2020, and it has some modifications that your aunt & uncle do not have. Thank you for filming, editing, and sharing. I love the E5.0 for the same reasons your aunt & uncle express. I’m not keen on the wet bath but for 21’ 2”, it is a trade off!

I am SO happy to see someone using a midsized truck to pull an Escape, I have been searching for anything that would show this. With the total weight and tongue distribution, I knew it could be done (according to the numbers) so seeing you doing it is great.
I happen to have a 2023 Hyundai Santa Cruz SEL Premium, all wheel drive, 2.5 turbo, even though the bed is shorter than your chevy, I saw you have a bed cover that is not rolled up completely, so I do believe my Santa Cruz should be able to handle it just fine.

very nice review of the 5th wheel escape. love your aunt/uncle and their zest for travel. rick and i met you two when you toured our bigfoot 25rq in royse city, tx. we are so happy to see that all your plans are falling into place with, of course, loads of your hard work. if you get a chance to tell your aunt/uncle, we also have the hypervent mat under our bed mattress, and the way they are using it is not the way the company explained it to us. its my understanding that the mat needs to be installed with the solid fabric side touching the mattress and the hard plastic loops would be on the carpet side. hope this helps. we are enjoying your videos!

@@OvertheRiverandThroughtheWoods we've been pretty busy . i had emergency spine surgery last December. for a minute we thought that would delay ricks retirement and our 6 month europe trip but, we powered through. we just got back and have not stopped yet. which sounds like your life. you two have accomplished so much since we first met. we are so impressed and look forward to your winter adventure videos to come. the yurt heated flooring build was simplistic genius. we cannot wait to see more of the same as you build your dream.

There are batteries in the wind sensor that need to be replaced. That may be your problem. Good Luck!!!

Sir, Thank You for your excellent review of your Escape 5.0. My questions are in regards to your 5th wheel hitch setup in your 2016 Colorado. Can you please tell me more about this setup? I.e. what hitch are you using, where is it positioned in the bed of the truck (directly over the rear axle or off-set), what is your turning radius (any issues with trailer-cab collisions), any modifications to your suspension. Also, when you connect/disconnect the trailer it looks like you lower the tailgate - any issues there? We are considering the same truck-trailer combination and very-much appreciate your help with these questions. Greetings from N. Idaho!

Hello (this is Jill, who made the video - I believe your questions are directed to my Uncle Jon). Here is his reply to a similar question we had recently:
The box on our Colorado is 6 feet. We use an Anderson hitch, picture shown below. The Anderson is a very popular hitch for those folks who have the Escape 5.0. They are light weight and have worked very well for us. From the center of the ball on the hitch, it is 36 inches to the front of the box. It is about 35.5 inches from the center of the ball to the front of the tailgate when the tailgate is closed. We can make 90 degree turns without making any contact between the trailer and truck.
There is an Escape Trailer forum that would definitely be able to provide answers to any questions you might have. There are some incredibly knowledgeable people on the site. The site is www.escapeforum.org.
Last year (2021) we traveled 11,700 miles over 4 months in the Escape. This year (2022) we traveled about 15,000 miles over 5.5 months. The Escape tows GREAT. Even with the Colorado, I hardly notice the trailer is there. Even going over the mountains is not a real issue. Will maintain 60 MPH through the mountains we have here. On flat terrain we can set the cruise control at 70 MPH and there are no problems. The 5.0's also handle winds very nicely. We do have the diesel Colorado.

What did you use for a hitch in the truck? I also have a diesel Colorado, and this piques my interest! How is the insulation for below freezing temps?

    • @OvertheRiverandThroughtheWoods

Hi Jay (this is Jill) I've copied and pasted my uncle Jon's reply to a similar question about the tow setup, below. I'm afraid they have never taken this vehicle winter camping as the water tanks are not built inside the insulation (although I think the manufacturer can do something special if you order it that way). Charles and I are currently about to spend winter in Vermont in a Bigfoot fiberglass RV (featured in some of our other videos), and it is a true four season model. The Oliver trailers are also four season (but we didn't find a floor plan of theirs that worked for us).

@@OvertheRiverandThroughtheWoods No, just looking at retirement in 5 years and I continually look at the escape website. :-) That 5.0 really looks like the ticket to a great tow, smaller truck, less gas and getting into all the smaller national parks. I think it would be something my wife wouldn't be scared of driving down the road.

They went with optional double step because you can get the lift kit on the 5.0 from factory.
