He allied with Hitler because Britain decided to act like a little b*tch with Italy after the Italians took Ethiopia. The British felt entitled to complain about Italy taking Ethiopia after taking almost the entirety of Africa themselves… kind of hypocritical. At first Britain was fond of Mussolini and could really appreciate how he took Italy out of the post-war chaos and the Brits were fascinated by his glorifying and reviving the old Rome. Too bad they couldn't grant the same successes to another, and the end result of that attitude we all know: it ultimately razed their own empire to the ground.
