    I just took delivery of my "Starry Night" EB MM Stingray Short Scale bass yesterday. All I can say is WOWEEEE!! Gorgeous instrument with the high build quality, flawless paint job, and premium components of the full scale EB MM Stingray Special. The pictures of the Starry Night paint job as seen in this video and on Guitar Center website do NOT do it justice. You have to see it in person to appreciate how glorious it really is.
    This is THE most comfortable bass I have ever played. It weighs 7.2 lbs, and it is perfectly balanced with absolutely NO neck dive. The neck is super fast and comfy with easy access all the way up the fretboard. The setup was perfect. Yes, it is expensive, but then when one considers that it is built in the U.S.A. like EB Music Man's other pro level instruments with the same quality craftsmanship, materials and components, the fact is that this is truly a top quality instrument any pro would be happy to gig with. You can dial in any tone you might want. The harmonics are fantastic, and the intonation is perfect all the way up the neck. It is passive, but I personally actually prefer that over active. Just crank up the gain on the amp if you want "more." The bass comes with the same quality hardshell molded custom fit case the USA Stingrays come in. No cheapie case or gig bag here.
    Two things Patrick didn't mention in this review: 1.) This bass is also available in classic tobacco sunburst finish with roasted maple neck and fingerboard, and 2.) Only 300 of these USA-made short scale Stingrays were made for worldwide distribution, and they are available only through select dealers. So if you think you might want one of these basses, I suggest you get on it before they are sold out as they are very limited edition instruments.
    The first edition of these USA short scale Stingray basses became available for order at NAMM 2019. That run was limited to 150 pieces total in two different colors - blue and red - and they instantly sold out. BTW...that first edition did not come with a roasted maple neck. I got this info from an Ernie Ball rep I spoke with this past June when I was trying to find out what dealers had the USA short scale Stingray (not the import Sterling version) in stock.
    In conclusion, one cannot fully appreciate what a great bass this is until they sit down with it and take it for a test drive. As for my personal experience -- no more long scale basses for me! I've found my perfect instrument! ❤️

    As always, Patrick, Great review. One point I want to make: The volume knob is NOT a Push-Pull. It is a Push-Push, and it DOES affect the tone a bit. The paper that comes with the bass which describes the three-way pickup phase selector also describes the volume knob as a "volume, bass boost" knob. My ear tells me it does boost the bass as well as volume. Check it out for yourself. The bass boost is subtle, but it is there... . I haven't really cranked it up yet, so perhaps I'll find more bass tone boost when I do.

      @@TheCpj1976 When did the length of an instrument became the basis for seriousness?

    • @1funkybasslady
      @1funkybasslady 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@TheCpj1976 You obviously haven't looked at "serious" short scale basses recently -- such as the one reviewed here. This is a pro-level bass with great intonation all the way up the board. I know because I just got mine yesterday, and the first thing I did was check the scale/intonation. Secondly, the strings on a short scale are typically lower in tension, thus they are easy to bend. Now if you are talking about cheapie entry level short scale instruments, perhaps they do have the issues you speak of, but the bass reviewed here is in a league of its own.

      @@OGM_OriginalGameMusic I would only pick two things apart with it. The tone basically seems to be on or off despite being a knob that turns. Can't say that bothers me, but it might annoy some people. Also using the two volume knobs for each coil, I don't really hear much of a difference so just tend to play with them both on. That said I'm playing through headphones and not an amp so you might notice more with that. But it sounds great!
      Everything else I love about it. Its really comfortable, I like a thick neck so it's good for me, the stock strings were really good, there is no hum or interference even in single coil mode, it keeps tune well, and came set up really well out of the box.

That Charcoal Sparkle is gorgeous too, but it is much larger flake than the Starry Night. The Starry Night is also more of a dark bluish-purply-to silver fade. I'm thinking they opted for the smaller flake for the smaller body. Whatever they decided, it is stunning. It almost looks 3 dimensional as I stare at the back of the bass. And as I said before, it looks like it is moving in space. This is true when looking at it in bright light. Love it! The only other thing I think would be prettier is if they had given it a dark black ebony fretboard and Starry Night matching headstock. Not asking for much, am I? I suspect that if they had done that it might have been too much bling for guys' liking. 😁

    Great review and demo, bravo Patrick but the product itself... Doesn't even sound much like the signature musicman stingray sound. Lacks that 'zing' and 'punch' but quite a flat and muffled alternative. I know it's due to the scale but meh, I guess it would make a better Sterling instrument.

    • @mouthmw
      @mouthmw 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      True, but the long scale Stingray Specials also lack that signature ray tone, it's due to the new electronics and the neodymium pickups. They just don't have that punch, bite and zing like they used to. Oh well, there's always the older ones. Seems like a lot of people who didn't like Stingrays before like the new Specials. Probably fits their boring top 40s cover band I guess?

      @@mouthmw personally, I've not tried anything new from MM for about 3 years but they seem to sound 'ok' but prices have shot up considerably that I'd rather buy a second hand 90's MM or even a Sterling SUB 🤷🏼‍♂️

    • @mouthmw
      @mouthmw 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@mrgskye second hand is the best way to go for sure. Especially 90s stuff which blows the new stuff out of the water. Just gotta be careful not to grab a super heavy one. I'll give em that, that's the only upgrade I dig about the new ones - the lighter weight. But with some smart shopping and digging around, you can find older rays under 9 lbs, which is perfectly fine IMO.

      Actually there IS a big difference in tone with 3 position choices. Add to that the tone control, and you have a very large pallet of tonal variation, The strings aren't sloppy at all. I know because I this bass.

    The StingRay is probably my favorite stock bass sound. However, although I like the headstock, neck, pick-guard, bridge, and electronics, I've never cared for the body shape. Looks too much like a P-Bass. I'd rather have the Harley Benton B-450, which has dual quarter-pound humbucker pickups.

      @1funkybasslady 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      But you don't get the TONE of the Stingray with a Warwick. It just depends on what tone you are looking for. Also, Warwick basses weigh a ton!! This one weighs 7.2 lbs. and is very balanced. Could play an 8 hour gig with it.

      @1funkybasslady 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JVMC_ZR1 I'm just a wuss!! But I don't think I'm sacrificing tone at all in favor of light weight and comfort. I guess it's another case of "To each his (her) own!" I think there is no "right answer" to what is best for each individual. It sounds like Warwick is your thing! I had a thumb bass several years ago, and I didn't care for the weight, balance and the neck dive. I felt like I was always fighting it. Warwicks are fantastic basses -- but not for me. BTW, I don't have long arms and large hands like most guys either, so that makes a big difference in what instruments I choose. I played a Fender Jazz Bass for a long time, but I'm gettin' old and lazy now. I still want great tone, however, to go along with comfort. I found it in this pro quality shorty from EBMM. Love it!
