- We've given our kitchen a stunning makeover with honed granite countertops! The transformation of our cozy cottage kitchen has been remarkable since we first moved in, and I'm excited to share the before-and-after photos in today's video. It took a while for me to decide on replacing our countertops with something we genuinely love, and I'm grateful to K2 Stoneworks in Michigan for making the process seamless. We're thrilled with our new countertops!
While I've always desired soapstone in our cottage-inspired kitchen, after some research, honed granite proved to be a great alternative that's also more budget-friendly! What are your thoughts, friends? I'd love to hear your feedback in the comments!

Every woman should be so blessed to have a Mike! His skills are quite impressive. Is there anything he can't do? And being gifted that blue stove is a dream come true for most of us! I love it so much , especially the color. The color is what makes a statement in your kitchen. Please, please keep the little wooden counter box there. Its perfect!!!!! Maybe just try a cream white wax rub over it ,to soften what you are perceiving as red. This is the sweetest coziest kitchen ever. I did love the black lantern pendant over the sink so much better. If fit the aesthetic of the space. This new one, although cute... has an Ikea vibe to me.

I totally agree with everything you said! The new countertops are beautiful. And that little wooden box belongs there in the corner (it looks like it was custom made to fit there)! I love the color of it. I like mixing different shades of wood. And, yes, the blue stove is gorgeous. (I personally don’t like stainless steel. It’s way too modern for my taste.) I think neutral colors are nice and calming, but I like color too much to have absolutely everything neutral. Some pops of color and variations make a room look “richer” and more inviting.
Subtle changes can make a huge difference to our enjoyment of a space and don’t need to be justified. I can see and feel your joy in the change. They are the cherry on top of your beautiful space.
I love how the slate picks up all the colors of your wood tones, copper and brass and your lovely stove. It's not too much at all, I think it's perfect!
I love how your countertops have such an old world look and blend so well with your kitchen style. You spend so much time in your kitchen, this has to be such a joy to you. Great choice!!!

I have wood floors in my kitchen and frankly love it! Some folks would say they weren’t ‘durable’ or practical, but I too love the old world look and feel, and every ding and scratch they get the more I love them.
Love the granite it looks great. I would keep the little cabinet adds a lot of charm.

Love the new counter tops. I really think the floors go with your counters and picks up the colors in your wood items in the kitchen and the blue stove. Maybe it is because I am not directly standing in there, but it looks beautiful to me. Then again I live in a 55 cottage where the floor is like an inch difference from one side of the room to the other. I had to use a vinyl flooring to go over the old flooring so as not to disturb old asbestos flooring and so that they could make it not buckle near one side of the room. You have to love these old houses with their beautiful quirks.
I absolutely love granite countertops even when the designers were saying granite was out of style. Each granite slab is unique natural substance with no one exactly the same just like a diamond

Hi Andrea! Your new countertops are beautiful! I do agree if you are thinking about changing the kitchen floor...wood is the way to go. You will surprised how much larger the kitchen will feel without the break in difference floor materials. Thanks for sharing!
The counter top looks great. My house was built in 30s and I have original hardwood on all floors but except kitchen. We remodeled the kitchen and found wood subfloor under all layers of laminate. My carpenter suggested sanding the pine subfloor and finishing it. I’m so glad we did that and it’s turned out so pretty and I love being able to keep something original in this room.

I love that you shared that it takes time and not necessarily getting into debt. We spent way too much on our master bath renovation. We paid cash to the contractor, but now my hubby doesn’t want to ever do another renovation project again-hiring it out anyway. SO, I am planning a kitchen renovation that I can tackle by myself. You give me hope and inspiration. Thank you!💖

Countertop looks great! I'd edit even further with all the bits and pieces you've placed on it, so the honed granite will be highlighted even more. Harwood floors would be wonderful as long as you can match them with the dining room floors that will butt up against them.

I love the little and BIG changes you continually make to your home, especially the kitchen - the heart of the home. Beautiful new countertops! Now, when is Mike going to add under cabinet lighting to show those off more? LOL. The hardwood flooring in the kitchen will be AMAZING. Charming, for sure.
Andrea great for you, you got the countertops of your dreams. It's so wonderful to have a handyman Mike in the house. Yes the counters from afar look the same and regarding the floors adding the wood flooring will add such a warmth to it. Oh let me also put my opinion regarding the wood unit on the counter, keep as is, don't change the color, not everything should be matchy, matchy. Great makeover well done, God bless!
Loved the black light fixture that hung over the beautiful sink.. they complimented each other so well. Maybe the same style in brass to match the hardware? The black one would go with the new counter tops, very cottage style. Also, love the new counter tops, great choice, and everyone did a good job! I think the little cabinet on the counter top would look perfect sanded to lighten it, and then Annie Sloan white waxed. TFS! Blessings 💕

Love love the counters. We had a black granite in the past and I’ve always loved how durable they were. We also have had wood floors in the kitchen and I love them! I wonder if you have wood floors under your existing tile. That would be a find for sure. I love how you’ve updated your home over the years. It’s nice to see the slower pace of renovations as well as a messy sink. That’s real life and I love seeing that.

I would paint the wood in the dishwasher the same as the cabinets.
No no no 😮 a few wood elements are needed to break things up. It enhances the rest of the room and looks beautiful on its own ❤
What a beautiful choice on the countertops. I have the black textured & honed granite in my kitchen over walnut cabinets and I have synthetic wood floors. My home is really, really small. I think wood that matches the rest of the house is a perfect fit for the kitchen floors. I happen to love the little cabinet you put on the counter, it add warmth to all the stone. ❤❤❤

Good morning Andrea, it’s amazing before your video, I watched a This Old House video from around ten years ago and it was about creating a cement countertop. It was a lot of work. They made the forms to pour the cement. The video was around an hour long. Your new countertop looks exceptional. Please tell your husband that he is very talented. The countertops are just lovely Andrea! We just recently (two weeks ago!) put in a new laminate countertop in our kitchen. We have a beautiful old home built in 1909. Our laminate looks like honed granite! I would have loved to have real stone, but, unfortunately, it wasn't something we could afford. So, for those who love the look, but don't have the budget, there is a really pretty laminate option!

We are remodeling our kitchen and we had the same old countertops as you and are replacing them with exactly the same honed granite. We too love the natural, farmhouse style. Your kitchen is beautiful. I love the blue stove! 😊

It may be that there’s a wood floor underneath all of that already … I think there might be in my kitchen under all the vinyl and linoleum. It’s also a more forgiving surface for drops and falls than stone. Love the new counters! I went with quartzite and love it.

I agree Andrea, the slate floor is just “much “. Hardwood floors in the kitchen would be wonderful. I had hardwood floors in my kitchen years ago and I loved them. So much easier on your legs and feet than stone or slate. It would be great if you could do an exact match to your existing hardwoods. Nothing more gracious looking than continuous flooring in the areas that are contiguous with other rooms that you see together. I don’t prefer the new pendant light over your sink. Keep looking. 😉

They are gorgeous! We went with honed black granite (American Black) for our kitchen instead of soapstone and I love it too!!
When my parents moved into their early 1970s home the kitchen dining room had linoleum and carpet. Yuck. When dad passed mom was able to redo the whole kitchen new layout etc. under the yuck floor was red and white oak hardwood floor! This being said I would remove all the treatments and see what underneath. If I remember correctly those amazing wood floors in dining and living room are original! Hoping for some more amazing finds for you.

You may want to see if the granite company has a piece of your granite to use as a backslash behind your stove. They may have a remnant piece. They can cut it to fit. Doesn't need to go up the whole wall space, even 4 to 6 inches. Mine is a 4 inch. Just a thought, love your choice of granite. Husband was in the kitchen business for almost 50 years.

We recently had honed granite installed as well. We chose the absolute black which doesn’t have the veining. I love mine too, and had always wanted it. Yours looks beautiful.

I'm SO happy for you to be able to get the countertops that you love! The counters look fantastic. We have lived in our home for 38 years and we've made many many changes. We currently have hardwood in our kitchen and I love it! I totally understand why you want to make the change. Will you match what you have in your dining room? How fortunate that Mike can do so much of the work and he always does a wonderful job. The heart of the home is the kitchen and it should be a space that you love! You work hard for your family and you deserve to have a space that you look forward to being in. I still love your blue stove!!! And the larger piece beside the stove is a keeper. I have a galley kitchen and remember going to the stone yard to find the perfect slab of granite to complete the vision i had for the space. It was several years ago, but i still love the way my kitchen looks to this day! Always fun to update and refresh and i love how yours turned out!
Love the countertops 👍 I think hardwood floors would look nice. It is a little busy to the eyes with different textures floor, counter and wall. But that is cottage nothing is meant to look built in or purposefully put together. I think if you change to wood pick maybe large plank flooring so it looks like the floors have been part of the house for years.. 😊

I agree. Even before the new countertops that floor was dated. I love the idea of the wood. Much more in tune with the feeling you’re going for in the house.
I like the new counter tops and I think it made a big difference. Like the kitchen spoke to you, for the right countertop and color. Do not worry about dishes, we all live in our homes as it should be. I love the stove color too. Also, the piece looks good with other pieces, at least I think it does.

The countertops are really beautiful. Great choice, Andrea! When we bought our house there was laminate flooring in the kitchen. My husband pulled them up and refinished the hardwoods underneath. They’re not perfect- like the singed bit in the shape of an old iron that someone must’ve set down when they took it out of the oven!- but we love them. Whatever you choose will be gorgeous!

Your new countertops are beautiful! I love the idea of using hardwood floors in your kitchen, because it is difficult to match exactly you might consider trying to match the color, but lay it in a Chevron pattern to make the kitchen stand out from the rest of the home. God bless you.
Andrea, I love your countertops! They are truly beautiful. I agree about your floor. If you find there are no salvageable hardwoods. You can replace the floors with ceramic tile that looks just like wood. Looking at them you cannot tell they are not the real thing yet the upkeep is so easy. Kitchen floors have there fair share of spills. Just a suggestion. I love, love the look of your beautiful kitchen. Thanks for taking us along during your renovations!

We are using Ivy Hill Granada tiles in different sizes and patterns for an old world look in our baths we are redoing... they look great with the French oak flooring we are using. (With White Evo Starlike non-toxic Epoxy grout... company is out of Italy but can get it at big box stores here in USA.) Thanks for being so kind, lovely ND inspiring 🙏💙
