you need to slow down and make a circle with your wrist, don't make the circle with your hand to get the sound. The way it works is that you push the vibration around the bowl and it gets stronger and louder.

December 1988, late at night in Kathmandu. The woman I recently met who is going on the same trek as I the next morning joined me for dinner and a late night of hot buttered rum by the fire at the Rhumdoodle. We begin the walk back to the guest house and passing a bar with the sound of good jazz wafting into the street we go in. We are invited by two Nepalis and a Brittish woman to join them for yet more drinks. By this time my companion is completely drunk. Later that night we drove with them to a square to get donuts and feeling a bump while driving the woman in front turns and says "they ran him over!" as they kept driving. At the square they started to seem threatening toward us so we walked off into the night not knowing where we were, me telling my companion to keep moving if they come at us while I will stay back to confront them. Hours later we find ourselves sitting across the narrow road from each other near our guest house, kind of in shock and talking about what had happened. No one is on the street. What looks like a covered military truck drives up and stops between us and the soldier or policeman in front calls my companion to his window. Talking rapidly and aggressively at her I know this is trouble. I walk around the back of the truck to make my way to her and looking inside the back I see soldiers sitting on benches and a seemingly lifeless body face down on the floor. Trouble. I get to her, grab her arm, profusely in pretend ignorance I thank the soldier questioning her, and quickly walk her to the door of the guest house praying it is unlocked. It opens as we get to it and an arm reaches out and pulls us in. Memories of late night Kathmandu...a year later we are married.

Durban square, cloaked in heavy fog, so early the rickshaw drivers are asleep on the street. Silence, peace, the old woman pours an offering on the ancient lingum, almost completely alone we two. That memory, walking in solitude embraced by the fog into the square at 4:30 AM long ago, has never left me.

My Nepali friend brought me the Gurkha knife from visiting his family there. Just not carryon. Since you are from UK, you should know about the Gurkha warrior - they were hired by the Brits during the wars, including against Japan in WW2 and still train in the UK to this day.
