Please note that, as the catcher approaches 3B, the baserunner hesitates to avoid potential collision. That is obstruction and the baserunner should have been awarded home plate.
There is absolutely no way the scorebook can accurately indicate this play. “8 Unassisted” does not do it justice.
Yes. First of all - it’s a hit - probably a double - maybe a triple. So yeah.
A possible way to score this might be: 3B8, 8U. Translation: batter hits a triple to center field, out outstretching at home, centerfielder unassisted.
@@danlambesis1289 Yeah, I think it's a triple. I know the rules explicitly say not to charge an error if the pitcher forgets to cover first, so this seems like just a more extreme version of that play. (edit: typos)
It's the same way you can't use proper scorekeeping for most little league games. 99.9% of cases where a fielder makes contact with the ball and fails to field it cleanly, that fielder is charged with an error. In little league, these kids miss pop ups or look at dad while there's a grounder heading their way or whatever, and there are errors all over the place. But you can't in good conscience charge an 8 year old with 10 errors in a game...
@@spelldaddy5386I hear ya - I used to score my kid's middle school games so I can relate. A lot of "cheap" hits were given out. :)
Forget the crowd - they have pro-level coverage with multiple cameras!
That too!
Thats what I came here to say
Fer real, though! Lol.
Facts!
Our area of the Midwest is cares very much about sports. We are the hardest small sports conference in the United States. We had 72 state championships.
Great hustle by the center fielder.
No doubt!
This was an amazing, possibly unique, play!
I love that. That CFer gets it and never gave up on the play.
Coach was brilliant! “OK, middle infield, you crash on a shallow fly ball but don’t grab the ball. Petey, you leave 3rd and cover 2nd but get there late. Billy, you leave home and cover third, and here the key part, you get there late too. Bobby, great job getting him to pop that pitch up - now you run around in a circle afterward, but make sure you DO NOT get in Luke’s way when he comes in from center field for the tag out at home! OK? Easy out boys, easy out!”
This is the best! 😂
This should be a teaching moment for the coach to his pitchers. The pitcher also cut off the angle for the CF to catch the runner.
😂😂😂
😂😂😂😂😂
I like how the CF read the catcher came to third and noone was at home and knew the runner saw the same thing. They both turned for home at the same time.
What a play!! An 8 unassisted at home plate? Never seen it in my life!
Bucket list complete NOW? BYE!!!!
@@traybern got a long way to go SUCKA
And you’ll never see it again. One in a million or even rarer
Gotta admit, when I saw the headline "CF Chases batter around bases" I thought I was going to see an outfielder screwing up very badly. Turns out it's one of the great hustle plays of all time.
And while I feel bad for this kid's team, I actually love that it happens when his team is losing by 8 in the 6th inning. To be generous to his teammates, they're probably demoralized. I assume the large crowd is because it's a playoff game and they're the home team, which means they're the higher seed. They probably felt pretty good about how this game was going to go, and it appears to have fallen apart pretty badly. Doesn't excuse them suddenly not knowing where to go, but they're high school kids. We can forgive them for not being as locked in as they should be at this moment.
But that centerfielder? He's probably thinking of a 9-run inning that the team had and so he's GOT to get the guy at home. Brilliant play.
Reading the title I thought the CF was looking for an excuse to fight.
Smallest division in Ohio. Two farming communities that are very competitive. The blue team, Marion Local, 13 time state football champions. Fort Recovery has been to the state baseball finals and semi state a couple of times, but it has been a few years now. Fun conference the Midwest Athletic Conference. Great supportive communities!
For sure! Love our area❤️
This is the best conference in ohio
This is why we as umpires are taught to pay attention at all times.. because you just never know when something will happen you’ve never seen before. This CF just didn’t give up and got rewarded for it… and the infielders… As someone who has coached… anyone have a bottle of Tums… I think this coach needed them…
Except the 3rd base umpire didn't pay attention. He was out of position and missed the obstruction by the catcher as the runner rounded 3rd. Runner should have been awarded home.
He's gonna tell this story for the rest of his life.
No doubt about it!!
He and Al Bundy can trade stories.
@@lo1bo2😂😂😂
That kid will never forget this play! Amazing!
*I’ll* never forget this play
Much respect to that high school center fielder. He's a hustler and never gave up!!!
There are two possible choices for the MVP award in this team: the center fielder for this play, or the pitcher if it's the coach's kid.
😆
Matt's breakdowns of interesting baseball plays are the highlight of my days. Great stuff.
It's wild there seems to be a rare or uncommon play several times a week.
I once tagged a guy out between third base and home. I was the right fielder. Long story short, it was a very long run down, and I hustled in to provide reinforcement, and was in the right place at the right time.
Not quite sure why the catcher didn’t realize that he wasn’t going to make it to third in time about halfway there and just go back to cover home, but without it we wouldn’t have this great play. Also, it looked like the runner kind of had to avoid the catcher so he should’ve just ran into him and then he probably would’ve awarded home anyways.
Absolutely! It was clearly obstruction on the catcher but the 3rd base umpire was so slow he was out of position since he tried to cover 2nd and didn't see it.
It happened at a District playoff game in NW Ohio. Just crazy to see a triple with an 8 unassisted in the score book for the play at the plate. Whoever was running Game changer has their hands full with that.
Runner should have tripped over the catcher instead of going around
Very true!
That was a very interesting play !!
Wow, that a crazy play that the CF chased him that far and managed to tag the runner just before reaching home.
GREAT video!!! "Have a fast centerfielder"... GOLD!!!😂❤
Antonelli got some good breakdowns. Great vid brada.
One of the main reasons I love this channel is because there are so many videos you break down that are extremely rare baseball plays 👍
A LOT of them include games where METAL bats are used. Those are NOT baseball!!!!!!
Watching this play, where the team in blue left all the bases uncovered, it's rather obvious why the score is 11 to 3.
This would be a good video to show at every future baseball camp.👍
Lots of infielders doing the wrong thing. I saw the LF coming in late...where was the RF when the 1B was in lala land? Thank God for the CF having his mind right. Outfielders always need to be moving towards the action and anticipate things.
What hustle what desire that’s leadership
I'm glad someone sent this to you. As noted in another comment, although this is a small school Ohio tournament game, these 2 schools are in what I believe is the best small public school athletic conference in the country, the Midwest Athletic Conference in western Ohio. There are 11 schools currently in the MAC. There is 1 small private school, but the rest are just small rural communities. But those towns support their kids and schools. The team in the field, Marion Local (which lost this game), just won their 14th state football title overall...most in Ohio history...and all since 2000. Those are amazing communities.
en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Midwest_Athletic_Conference
I'm from Michigan but like to go bicycling on the roads in those counties. I didn't know about the reputation of those towns in high school sports. (When riding in Ohio, it's sometimes best not to mention which state I'm from.)
You get the most awesome plays.
that was awesome.
Awesome!
Safe due to obstruction by catcher at third base
Was thinking the exact same thing.
Agree
I'm ashamed to say I didn't notice that until CCS pointed it out. Also, the third base umpire was arguably out of position; it should probably have been the first base umpire going to second to cover the catch and the potential play at second. Perhaps if U3 had stayed at third, the obstruction might have been called.
is the catcher not allowed to run to the base though incase its thrown? Where exactly is he supposed to run to get to the base, not knowing that the runner is going to keep going?
@@toxicmoldmedia Yes, but in doing so he cannot obstruct the runner (unless he has the ball). He should have run to third on the infield side of the baseline. By running on the foul side of the line, he's right where the runner is going to be as he rounds third.
The pitcher basically watched the runner round the bases
Cover! “Is no my yob!!!”
Great hustle, great heads up, and a crashed stop sign.
Great athletic play by the CF
😂😂 love it!
That was the '2024 Division IV OHSAA Baseball Tournament Northwest' which explains the crowd I'd assume. I'm not that educated in how the American high-school baseball system works but from what I read, the Division more has to do with the number of students in a school district as opposed to skill level alone like you'd have at college level.
Yes, that is true.
At what point do the 3rd baseman approaching second and the catcher crowding 3rd become obstruction?
At the point when they actually impede the runner’s progress. However, the runner is rounding the bases in a way that makes the fielders positions legal.
This is why it’s a great game
If you look closely, the runner slowed at 3b because coach had his right palm facing forward in a tepid "hold" signal. Runner continued home anyway, was not diverted by C, so no obstruction (my judgment)--3B's effort to cover 2b (1:10) diverted the runner more than C. Wouldn't've called that, either.
Smart base running as well, other than maybe selling running into the catcher.
If he doesn't let up that tiny bit going into 3rd, I bet he scores, or if he plows the catcher instead of going around.
Just like in football, it's all about the angle you take. Well done, CF.
In baseball, the runner has to go on to one spot which is clearly marked on the field. So you just have to run a straight line from wherever you are to that spot.
@@stt5v2002 a runner rounding (a very significant word) third base and heading for home is momentarily at third base (for as long as his foot touches third base), "wherever you are" to use your phrase. And of course he does NOT have to run a straight line from there to home plate.
Was definitely a touchdown-saving tackle!!
Haha This play was featured on the MLB Network (MLB Central) today along with recent MLB goofs. To their credit, the guys were also supportive and stressed they weren’t trying to pick on high school players. It’s just an unheard of play.
Mark Shine and Chad Spencer on the mic's for this tournament game between MAC foes.
I’d love to hear the call on that play!!!
My son played a 13U game several years ago. Runner on 3rd, two outs, bottom of the last inning, we were leading by one run. He was the pitcher, and the batter hit a line drive to the center field. The runner "scored", the batter was fist pumping to the bench, and all the families of the other team were cheering. Next thing, our center field threw a laser to the first, and the batter was out.....
Oof, somebody had the team running laps next practice...
As a coach I'm always telling my kids that there is always somewhere to be on the baseball field. This is a great video to show them why.
Everyone is commenting on the CF, and deservedly so. However, the batter, now runner, is hustling and taking advantage of the situation. Great hustle on both sides .
He SCREWED UP!!! He “had” a runner on THIRD with ONE out. Then RAN his team out of a run.
Good for that kid getting after it and making that play happen
That was basically the baseball equivalent of the blue team "shootin' the moon" on accident.
They screwed up so badly that they circled back to success.
Third baseman and catcher are a but guilty of maybe overthinking on this play (moving bases to try to get the out instead of just preventing the runner from advancing) while the pitcher and 1B appear to be guilty of not thinking at all (apparently failing to cover any base during the entire fiasco)
There’s a whole lotta hustle in that kid.
That 3rd base coach!! Haha
How wish Peter Rose would see this video clip and someone take a picture of his face!!!!! Pete would say that Center Fielder is a man after my own heart!!! Lol!!!!🤣🤣🤣
So the baseline is only there for looks right ?
Hey coach I’ll be an upcoming sophomore next year and I got cut from the freshman team. I want to show the coaches that I’m a different player and one of my biggest problems is stepping in the bucket. Any advice?
Cool on center fielder's part, but on the other hand what other option had he had? Was on a small field with eight other jokers with nobody to throw the ball to.
Put the CF on acouting reports for sure
CF and C were hustling! 3B dogged it to second and dogged it to third. Looks like 1B went partway to second and then stood there for the rest of the play. P walked toward third....
That guys fast
Not sure which is more impressive, the chase down or the fact that Marion Local was down 11-3 in the 6th (I assume they play 7 innings) and the CF hustled like that to make the Out.
Just like they drew it up on the chalkboard! 😁
Possible interference on the catcher as he rounded third. I've been to regular season HS games in 5A and 6A in Texas where the stands are that full.
While all of the fielders were attempting at least to rotate to cover bases, the only one who does not is the pitcher. He should have been at the plate when the catcher moved up the line but you can see as the runner rounded third that he kind of moseyed toward third but really didn't actively become part of the defense. I used to catch (rec league only) and I had to tell my pitcher once that you can't be a spectator out there. Fun play to watch though.
*"Center fielder makes the tag at home"* is probably something I'll never see again.
At 0:13 and 1:21, you can see the third base coach trying to get the guy to stop at 3rd. Watching everyone other than the center fielder, you can see why Ft. Recovery has 11 runs. Short stop and 2nd baseman can't make a catch and they lose their steam. Third basemen "runs" to 2nd with his glove on his leg. Pitcher is just standing around while catcher leaves home plate empty, making the same mistake 3rd baseman does _while witnessing it._
Just fantastic! I love this game. It’s too bad that we could not hear the reaction from the stands. Whenever something amazing happens like this there’s always a silent pause before the uproar. For me, it’s what makes the game enjoyable.
The Forrest Gump comment at the end gave me a chuckle
Most of the time baseball is a very slow game, but sometimes when a play happens things move very fast and you have to make moves on instinct.
That's new.
Awesome play. The batter/runner could have run into the catcher on his way to the plate, and maybe even the third baseman on the way to third.
was the 3rd base coach trying to hold the runner at 3rd? looks like it.
He didn't know the catcher was out of position and no one was covering home. The runner could see that but the coach couldn't.
When this center fielder hits 88 miles per hour, you’re gonna see some serious sh--
Wow..... alls I gotta say
Nice play but no interference by the catcher when the runner comes around 3rd?
UM….THAT is called OBSTRUCTION, Junior!
Could the catcher be called for obstruction as the runner turns around third base?
Should be safe at home based on interference by the catcher when rounding third. Catcher gets right in the path and puts his glove up to slow the runner down.
Great play but should be safe at home due to obstruction by catcher at 3rd base.
So many mistakes - one not mentioned is first baseman was AWOL. With the defensive rotation, it was his responsibility to cover the plate.
Yep, poor fundamentals and lack of experience- third baseman trying to cover second base and catcher trying to cover third base with the runner on the move.
Was taught in high school that the first baseman follows behind the running to second. If the runner go past second then first baseman covers second if the runner turns back to second. Thrid baseman stays at third and pitcher backs up third base. Catcher stays at home. Pitcher should be taught to either back up third base if no runners our on base. If there is runners on base than he backs up home plate. This play looks like there playing T-ball 😅😅😅
MAC conference. Best small school conference in Ohio!!
Yea you are taught as an infielder and as an outfielder to back up every play and cover every base. So I was taught when the second baseman or the shortstop has to vacate their position that someone has to cover a base. So I played first base from little league to highschool and your taught to cover second base on a double in the outfield or on a play like this. So the first baseman should have covered second base on this play
Left fielder should have been on 3rd, rf gone to 1st, and eventually down to home
Catcher shouldn’t have covered 3rd. But the centerfielder bailed everyone out
Down by 8 runs, 11 - 3, and he did that. He was probably responsible for the 3 runs too - the only guy with his head in the game. Nope, never saw it either b/c they don't clip 'T' ball highlights.
I think it’s 1B follows the runner.
LOL WOW
It’s not even remotely the same thing, but I once saw Phillies centerfielder Garry Maddox tag out a Mets runner at home plate. It was one of those wild rundown plays with multiple guys on the bases and ultimate fielders handling the ball at some point. Eventually Maddox came in from the outfield and got the ball and somehow tagged the guy trying to score. It was wacky and I doubt video evidence even exists. Late seventies or early eighties.
so whats everyones opinion about possible obstruction at 3rd base by the catcher?
And when a defensive player does not have possession of the ball, or is not in the act of receiving a throw, the runner now has the Right of Way and the defensive player must not hinder or impede the progress of the runner in his base path.
@@charlesheo6099 I have obstruction, award home
Hard to tell but did the catcher touch the runner as he turned third base? Cause that would be interference, wish we had another camera angle
It looked like both the first and the third baseman were trying to cover second base. When the catcher left the plate, the pitcher had to cover home. Oh well, they got the runner anyway.
Man that kid put on the afterburners to catch up to that base runner
How was the catcher not called for obstruction or interference? He hindered the runner as he was rounding third which was why he was tagged out.
It doesn't look like did did obstruct or interfere. The runner slows down for a second, but I think it's because he is expecting to stop at third base. But then he looks to see that the catcher is coming up the line and home plate is uncovered and so he starts again. But he never comes to a complete stop, and so he has to round the base. When he does this, his angle takes him around the catcher.
Thanks man
That clip sums up Biden blocking the election results vote blue@@camicawber
You are right, pitcher needs to cover second. 3rd baseman and catcher stay at home. As a first baseman, I probably would have trailed the runner, if I saw the pitcher forget to cover. I wouldn’t have expected the 3rd baseman or catcher to leave their bases.
NO, DUMBBELL!! 3rd baseman stays at THIRD!!!

A serious breakdown on infield defense, but the center fielder saves the day? Check!
haha, it's insane on both ends. you think a dude is about to get an _incredible_ inside the parker, but instead is tagged out with an _incredible_ play by the... CF????
Center fielder is beyond fast! But really, outfielders need more than an "arm". Balls hit into the gap, you
need "speed"...guys that can outright run, sprint, limit that hit to ONE LESS base by getting to it QUICKLY!
A slow outfielder just give away bases and runs!
Ah! That's why you put your fastest runner in centerfield! Now I understand! 😂
The "8U" on the scorecard will not do this play justice.
Whats 8 U?
@@jordy65056 The centerfielder is position #8. The "U" stands for unassisted.
@@cheapercharlie oh ok thanks
It doesn't really count since it was little league, probably about ten years old, our pitcher had an unassisted triple play. Caught the pop up, knew no one would catch any of the relays, so he ran the bases backwards cause the runners didn't know what was going on
