Very informative, my 2001 8/24 Ariens has its original belts ( and from my dealership parts guy who has his original belts on a machine that is a 1993 model) my plan is to change them out! Yeah I know that’s a long time, but he insisted on a yearly inspection ( which I do) so I’m breaking his rule: if they look fine leave them alone “ if it : ain’t broke don’t replace “ them? Love your channel, thanks for sharing, always worth while info 👍
Just came across this video!! Awesome! I chose to take the pulley off to put my belts on. The new belts were tight and I was worried that I would damage them. 4 bolts and the pulley came right off. Thanks again for the vid! Super helpful!!
I'm trying to remove the pulleys but I'm having trouble finding something to jam in there to stop the pulley from spinning while I remove the bolts. What did you use?
Very helpful video. Thanks for this. An idea for 4:07: Hold the belts together with a rubber band when tipping the auger housing toward the engine and drive assembly. That way they stay on the auger pulley without having to use one hand to hold them on while you're joining the two parts of the machine together.
Thank you for going to all the bother to post this video. Great instructions, and kept simple and to the point! At first glance, it looks like you could replace (at least the auger belt), without breaking the machine in half. That would make this MUCH easier, when dealing with older (rusted, banged up etc.), machines. Maybe Ariens would rather you have the Ariens Dealer perform the task……
Great video! As I changed my belts last year on my 25 year old Ariens ST8 I can attest that nothing has changed in regards to how to get it done. You did an excellent job on providing all the necessary steps. I used genuine Ariens belts but they ended up being a tad too long. Enough that I couldn’t make as tight as I wanted when the tensioner was at full tension. It still works ok though. Next thing I’m considering is installing impeller shims to help it throw snow farther.
Hey David! Thanks for the positive feedback! Those old ST 8’s are tanks! You could possibly go to a shop that sells belts and see if they can sell you one that is one size down. Could possibly help! Be sure to check out my impeller kit videos. Did a few of them and all of them work great. Thanks for checking out my channel!
Just changed the belt on my Husqvarna ST327, was a lot easier than the steps you had to do. remove chute with cables still on, remove belt cover, undo4 bolts, split the unit slightly, replace the belt, fold back the unit, tighten four bolts, put belt on the pulley, replace cover, drop the chute back on, and you are done.
Every model is a little different but pretty much every one has to be split in half. Depends on how many other things are in the way. Thanks for watching Sunjay!

Thanks for the great videos! I'm trying to replace the auger belts on my Ariens Deluxe 28, but I can't get them past the bolts on the brackets on the sides of the pulley. The new belts are a little thicker than the old belts and I tried for half an hour to get them on, but I couldn't do it. I'm considering removing the pulley so I can get them on. I tried loosening one of the bolts on it, but the pulley spins around too much. Do you have any tips on how to keep the pulley still while I remove the bolts?
Your going to think I'm nuts, but I learned this on another YT channel a few years back. There's a product called 303 they make several versions I use one for RV's. If you soak belts in it overnight it helps preserve the rubber from cracking over time. It does seem to help I've tried it, it doesn't cause any slippage or other issues either.
Hello JB, if I wanted to add some new bright lights with low voltage how would I hook them up? I noticed that I have holes on the auger housing. You could use some big gum bands to hole those belts when titling it back. That one video where you make the unit level was great, and thanks for the tip about the shoes and the belts. Also JB, I still can't start my blower with the hand pull, Electric start only. I have tried. I runs good other wise. I also have used Sea Foam in the gas to clean the carb. Great Video !
Hey Stanley! I know donyboy on TH-cam did a video on lighting for a snowblower. Guess they work pretty well. That leveling tip works well and also helps you drive straight too. I wonder if your magneto has a thin layer of rust on it preventing it from getting a good spark. It’s not terribly hard getting in there to look at it depending on the model. As always thanks for watching!
I have a 1995 Troy-Bilt 9526 that I purchased new, I have never changed any of the belts on the unit. Although, after watching your video I did order new ones. Love this machine, only problem I'm having is parts are getting harder to find. Still starts with one pull.
I have a Garden Way era vintage Troy Bilt, and it seemed easy replacing the belt by just removing the two top bolts to allow it to hinge open for access instead of separating the auger section entirely.
Pretty sure the belts on the machine I have are the original ones from 1999... Just changing them now. Thanks for the informative video it helped even on a fairly different machine.
JB!! Was guided here after using your friction disc video to replace disc. Discovered my drive belt is actually the problem which let me to your auger belt replacement video. Thanks for both videos, as they are quite helpful for first time pulling apart the machine. I was surprised that you did not replace the drive belt when replacing the auger belts. Why not do that belt as well since the machine is pulled apart? Anyways, do you have a video on drive belt replacement? TIA!!!!
Hey truwebs the drive belt on mine was in great shape when I filmed this video. The drive belt on this model isn’t too hard to swap out. You will have to loosen some parts holding the drive wheel in place so you can wiggle the new drive belt into place in front of the friction disc. I have used a long screw driver to slip it down into place. Thanks for watching my friend!
@@GarageGear Thanks for the reply and videos you have supplied. Most helpful!! I "persuaded" that drive belt between the drive pulley wheel and friction disc with a screwdriver. Ready for the next snow!
Hi Buffalo. Today is the day. From the TV, Buffalo is to have about 15 inches of snow today, with blizzard conditions. Your Ariens is waiting for you. I am further east and north in Montreal, and we have, at time of wriitng this, 3 inches of snow, with heavy gusts. By end-of-day, we should have about a foot and a half, (50cm). Just a reminder, when you and your viewers clear the snow, make sure the wind is on your back. Protect year ears.
JB how long did it take for you to do all of this stuff for an edited 8 minute video? I'm asking because if I decide to do this on on my own I would like to know a time frame. Great video and great job replacing your belts. Preventative maintenance is so helpful and not something everyone does in this day in time.
Hey Whitie! If you have the tools and the belts on hand you can do this in about an hour or so. Took me twice as long because I had to keep moving the camera around for different shots. I keep a few belts and a brand new carburetor on hand in case if issues pop up. Then I’m ready! Start to finish this video took about 7-8 hours to film, edit and upload to TH-cam! Thanks as always for being an awesome fan!
Great video, very helpful! My blower stopped throwing mid way through clearing the driveway of heavy wet snow here in Fulton NY yesterday. I opened the belt cover to check the belts and noticed one is much more loose than the other. Is it normal that one would wear before the other or do you think I have another issue?
I have seen this before. Could have stretched out somehow. You never know because you can’t exactly see what happens. Best to change both. Thanks for watching!👍
I have never changed them before but after watching this, no problem. Well….in theory. typically I end up finding out I have the only produced model of whatever it is and it requires full disassembly 😂.
Hey jkeane! Have you checked the following: Belts Belt tensioner Throttle speed Auger gear case for any noise Anything caught in the impeller Let me know if you find anything!
I have a question. When the auger lever is not engaged, is the belt supposed to slip on the engine pulley, I mean if its not engaging, it has to slip somewhere?
Hey toto! The belt just stops in place when you let go of the lever. The pulley will keep spinning and when you pull on the lever the tensioner puts pressure on the pulley tightening the belt on the pulleys. Thanks for watching
Hey JB, love your videos! I adjusted my auger cable and now it’s taught but how do you know if it’s to tight? When my auger handle is up , there is a little play in the cable. When I depress the handle, the cable is tight with no play! Should I adjust or is that normal? Thanks again and keep up the great videos!!!
Hey Ray, I’m my experience you want it to have a little play when it is not pressed down. And taught when pressed. If it’s too hard to push down then it’s too tight. Just eye ball the adjustment to these settings. Thanks for watching bud!
Hey J.B. Love your vids, very helpful. I've seen you install the impeller kits on the Ariens, and you turn the impeller by hand. I cannot get my impeller to turn freely, what am i doing wrong? Thanks.
Hey Charlie some snowblowers have a locking mechanism on the impellers so I’m told. You may have to do some research on your model to see how to disengage it. I’m not totally sure how. Perhaps removing the belts? If that doesn’t work, perhaps start up the machine, run the impellers to see if you can spin them into the next drill position. Hope this helps. Thanks for being an awesome fan!👍
Hey alaw! The belt should relax on the drive pulley. I should not spin but be just snug enough that when you pull the lever it grabs. Thanks for watching!
How are you getting THAT much snow in buffalo? Here in Northern Ontario we’ve had an embarrassing amount of snow and I’m right on Lake Superior. I’m not hoping for huge dumps but at the same time I’m excited to get my snowblowers working out after following your maintenance and checklist suggestions on them!

I have a John Deere TRS 27. I just received two belts to replace the auger and drive belts. I live in East Amherst and since I think you are in my area would you consider making a house call to install my belts?
Hey JFH! Awesome to here from a fellow buffalonian! I could possibly help you out. I typically pick the machine up and bring it to my garage to work on it. Shoot me an email if you’d like to me work on it. 👍 thanks for watching!
theres no need to disconnect all those cables, just pop the shute off with the cables connected and set it aside, theres also no need to pull the front end of the machine off either. Remove the sparkplug to make engine rotation easy, turn the small pulley by hand to jump the belt onto the crankshaft pulley.
Pro tip, snow blow 2 rows into your yard and about 15-20' before your driveway. Then all snow that's on the plows blade will dump in the yard instead of your driveway.
I have a Ariens 30 platinum sho model 921030 and changing the belts are a pain, not as easy as shown. The twin belts won't go on the double pulley bottom, you have to remove the double pulley to install the new belt. Also, the drive wheel belt won't go between the traction disc and pulley without removing the bottom belly pan and pull that belt in between and that could be a pain. also, the remote one lever chute is a pain to dismantle and reassemble. I like the machine it can through snow a good distance.

Never mind. I was able to get the pulley off by jamming a rubber door stop in on either side. I was able to get the belts on so my problem is solved.
Hey CK glad you solved your issue! Thanks for being a cool fan of the channel!
Best video ever.thank you
Thanks for the positive feedback wisamabazly! I appreciate it! Thanks for watching!👍
Love you, fixit man.
Thank you for being an awesome fan! 👍
I will look into this powder! Thanks for sharing! 👍
@@GarageGear I see donyboy already has a light on his. I think he use the wiring that was already there. I wish I did. I will ask him, Thanks !
Your posts are great! Unfortunately my belt did let go during a 2 foot plus Blizzard 2022.
Oh no! They all go at some point! New belts will throw a bit further. So that’s a plus! Thanks for watching Joseph
I have a 1995 Troy-Bilt 9526 that I purchased new, I have never changed any of the belts on the unit. Although, after watching your video I did order new ones. Love this machine, only problem I'm having is parts are getting harder to find. Still starts with one pull.
Awesome my friend! They don’t build them like they used to! Thanks for watching!
I have a Garden Way era vintage Troy Bilt, and it seemed easy replacing the belt by just removing the two top bolts to allow it to hinge open for access instead of separating the auger section entirely.
@@wingerrrrrrrrr some models may allow you to do this. Some aren’t as easy.
Pretty sure the belts on the machine I have are the original ones from 1999... Just changing them now. Thanks for the informative video it helped even on a fairly different machine.
Awesome my friend! Glad this video helped you out!👍
@@truwebs awesome my friend! Persuading is the way to do it!
Actually we ended up getting about 2 feet by me. Thanks for sharing your tips once again Leslie! Thanks for watching!
Can the impeller upgrade be done on a Ariens Model: 920014 - Compact 24 LE specs?
Yes it can! It will make that machine a beast!
Cub Cadet 3X26HD 10 yrs original belts…I have new ones I just never got around to changing them when it was still decent out. Gotta love Buffalo LOL
Thanks for sharing James!
Thank for your awesome video… That’s what I’m looking for ! I will do step by step like your video ( I probably need to change the belt !!! )
You got it Livan! Glad you found it helpful! New belts make a big difference! Thanks for watching!
@Whitie what part of Vermont do you live in? I’m in Brattleboro but grew up in Putney/Westminster area
@@taylored.creations I am in Chittenden.
I think you’ll be just fine Tanner! I got faith in you!
My tines are not up to speed moving slow any ideas .Have a Arines 2 stage it's my third season with this .
Hey jkeane! Have you checked the following:
Belts
Belt tensioner
Throttle speed
Auger gear case for any noise
Anything caught in the impeller
Let me know if you find anything!
Very informative tx
You got it Paul! Thanks for watching!
Thank you, well done
Thanks a lot Freddy!
Not me watching this before a Maine NorEastern 😩
Uh oh something is coming your way!
@Garage Gear - what kind of shoes you have on that Deluxe 28?
Those are armor skids you can find them on snowblowerskids.com
Hey JB, love your videos! I adjusted my auger cable and now it’s taught but how do you know if it’s to tight? When my auger handle is up , there is a little play in the cable. When I depress the handle, the cable is tight with no play! Should I adjust or is that normal? Thanks again and keep up the great videos!!!
Hey Ray, I’m my experience you want it to have a little play when it is not pressed down. And taught when pressed. If it’s too hard to push down then it’s too tight. Just eye ball the adjustment to these settings. Thanks for watching bud!
@@GarageGearThank you for your response JB. I’ll check it again today. Happy Holidays
@@raymoran1559 merry Christmas to you and your family Ray!
Should there be zero or almost zero tension on the belt when not engaged to throw snow?
Hey alaw! The belt should relax on the drive pulley. I should not spin but be just snug enough that when you pull the lever it grabs. Thanks for watching!
@@GarageGearGot it! I was having a helluva time trying to replace my belt last night. I appreciate the response!
@@Alawicous awesome my friend!
How did you get belts on. You didn't show this part. Having issues with bolt nubs clearance issues. What's the trick

Been using my White Outdoor Sno Boss 850 for over 20 years... never changed the auger belts and never paid anyone to do it either. My machine must be running on prayers.
Lol give them a look when you have a moment! It’s a cheap and easy fix usually. And you tend to get better throwing results too. Thanks for checking out my channel!
Small cracks are ok in the dating game, but not in drive/auger belts. 😉

i’m having a problem where my Ariens is squealing when going through deeper snow. could it be the auger belts
Sounds like it’s the belts. Take the cover off and give them a look. Probably worth replacing!
Hello J.B. My husband just changed the belt on our Ariens and now it will go in reverse and not forward. I try not to let him do too much as he always seems to be breaking things. Is there something he may have done wrong.
I have a feeling this is not belt related Nancy! If you want to send me a pic or two of the problem via email perhaps I could help as best I can. Thanks for watching!

I’ll see what I can do! All off our snow melted and I’ll need some to demo with! Stay tuned!
I have a John Deere TRS 27. I just received two belts to replace the auger and drive belts. I live in East Amherst and since I think you are in my area would you consider making a house call to install my belts?

You got it my friend! Thanks for watching!
theres no need to disconnect all those cables, just pop the shute off with the cables connected and set it aside, theres also no need to pull the front end of the machine off either. Remove the sparkplug to make engine rotation easy, turn the small pulley by hand to jump the belt onto the crankshaft pulley.
@@gerardjones7881 thanks for sharing gerard
belt replacement is a real pain a lot of the time the size of the belts is worn off what to do?
Why did you not just disconnect the shoot like did on your impeller extension video? That seems easier.

Pro tip, snow blow 2 rows into your yard and about 15-20' before your driveway. Then all snow that's on the plows blade will dump in the yard instead of your driveway.
Ive done that before but my blower eats up my lawn. I try to avoid damaging it in the winter! Thanks for checking out my channel!

Appreciate the feedback 1995! Thanks for watching!
Thanks for sharing
Easier said than done. Our 2 auger belts keep falling off as we put them on.
Have you tried getting another set of hands to help out with putting the machine back together? They can hold the belts in place. Thanks for watching!

Fixing my clogged blower whose augerwasn't rotating saved this young father's bad back from a 3-car driveway after a fresh 10 inch overnight dump.
I just changed the belt on my really old (Craftsman sold by Sears, manufactured by Murray, which was acquired by in 2004 and now sold as Briggs & Stratton) snowblower I bought 3 Winters ago of questionable and unknown age (maybe from 2005?) and history, since I bought it from a random dude on the internet (he told me he's an eritred electrician, so handiness checks out).
Happy to say mine was a much easier arrangement inside! My drivegear is a chain, and my tension belt and wheel and pulley system is part of the rear half of the assembly, so I only had to manage one belt while changing the auger belt.
