How Luka Doncic attacks defenses by going sideways

  • Luka Doncic scored 60 points in a triple-double win over the Knicks on December 27, 2022, but it was his 22 point game against the Nuggets a few weeks earlier that caught my eye. This detailed film breakdown & scouting report analyzes how the Mavericks MVP candidate attacks "hedges" in the pick-and-roll -- commonly used by Nikola Jokic -- and why his size and patience make him so hard to stop, even when he's double-teamed.

      They work in tandem and the best part as mentioned in the last part of the video about having that size advantage as well as the court vision. Luka is able to stress the defense on similar screen actions like a small guard would but he has more angles to attack with his passing due to his size.

    This is what makes Luka such a ridiculous talent...his blend of scoring and passing. No matter what defensive coverage he has to deal with, he is going to be able to have a significant impact on the game. With the way his career is panning out so far, Luka is on track to be one of the very greatest the game has ever seen.

      He needs the ball too much to ever have another star. Other co-stars are always going to see their stats plummet with Luka. There is zero chance someone with his usage rate wins a championship. That monster triple double was barely enough to beat a .500 team in overtime. You can scale players like Bird and Jokic. You cannot do that with this kid. I would hate to play with someone like him. You can bet that other great players have no desire to play with Luka like they do with Joker.

    I'd really enjoy a video where you show some of your favorite examples of Luka's "micro ball-fakes". I've heard Ben mention before a few times how Luka's so good at these "micro ball-fakes", and there was a clip in this video where Luka's highlighted disguising a lob in the pnr as if he's going to whip the ball over his head to the corner. And the cleverness, let alone dexterity to pull that off, even though the defender doesn't bite to the corner (and it still doesn't matter) to pull that off just blows me away. I'd love to see more of that, like slowed down and analyzed to show how Luka's able to create space for himself and others, moving defenders in clever little ways. It's really high level stuff.

Meanwhile the Nuggets have nobody great to matchup vs the Warriors on offense. Regarding Luka the Warriors had 2 great foils against him; Wiggins who was on him nearly the entire series and Looney who helped when Luka attacked the basket. Both those guys were able to adapt very well to Luka's ability to stop and go on a dime. Plus Wiggins is as ferocious on the boards as Luka himself is.

    • @AveChristusRex789

      I’m saying. Harden at 23 wasn’t ever close to the level Luka is at and Harden is not the only heliocentric player ever I’d also rather compare Luka to young MJ. Both averaged 32+/8/8 in their 5th season 🤷‍♂️

    • @t4d0W
      @t4d0W ปีที่แล้ว

      It stopped by Luka's 3rd season. All he did was mastered Harden's step back and his consistency with the screen game to jail his opponent behind him while being an elite finisher under the basket. Luka was already adding more to his arsenal beyond that point while Harden continued to eat off the FT rules and doing weird shit with it.

    We need a Mavs-Nuggets breakdown where it's just Jokic and Doncic getting high-IQ offense back and forth! Two of the best initiators in the game right now!

  • @varunkamat7390
    @varunkamat7390 ปีที่แล้ว +13

    The Nuggets inability to defend a PnR against elite stars due to Jokic is why I can't see them ever winning a chip. You can basically generate a wide open three or layup on command in the clutch vs them.

    • @t4d0W
      @t4d0W ปีที่แล้ว

      the Mavs are an extreme example with not only how often they run a variety of screens/PnRs but the different angles their ball handler can attack from it. Also its not like the Nuggets can't get 'better' with upgrading defensive talent on wings.

    • @varunkamat7390
      @varunkamat7390 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@t4d0W They've upgraded massively on the perimeter with KCP and Brown, plus they have Aaron Gordon. They're still a bottom 10 defense and it'll only be worse in the playoffs when they face a superstar guard/wing. The Warriors last year basically spammed a PnR at Jokic and dominated in every clutch game.

      Who's gonna stop the MVP on the other end tho? Nobody

    • @t4d0W
      @t4d0W ปีที่แล้ว

      @@varunkamat7390 Defending PnR isn't just the job of the big. If the guards can't keep up with the ball handler or the backside can't rotate to help, the entire thing is shot. If you look at who the Nuggets got on defense in the playoffs last year, its no wonder even the Warriors can run circles in the half court without any resistance. Which is why I wrote the Nuggets can get 'better' but to win a chip, they gotta be better than KCP and Aaron Gordon on defense.

    2:56 Yeah, i mean, it wouldn't be good if he does exactly what the enemy wants all the time. But it can surely backfire, it's strongly crowded (of course it's not the same as well guarded) and if they're waiting for that they're gonna open a huge grin.
    It's like the idea that the one who controls the conversation it's the one who listen, offense is a response to defense, so you can use that to your favor. Some reverse magic, "dark arts" as Akagi manga would say.

  • @mako4874

    Such a smart player - always in control and always makes the high percentage play. He just needs help offensively, shooters and another creator, and a inside scorer, to ease the burden and true stoppers so he can rest a bit on defence . We re seeing an all time great and we don’t want his peak wasted with poor support the way garnetts was , tmac, iverson, Carmelo, or Barkley, etc . The difference imho between them and Duncan was Duncan had help - and hence five championships.

      IMO new age Mavs fans may feel burned by being impatient. Older Mavs fans who seen Dirk's amazing solo career may have a better understanding of the roster building situation because its hard to get the ideal teammate for Doncic eating a load of the cap. Along with Doncic always keeping the floor of the team as a playoff one which makes adding meaningful talents in the draft a lot harder. The 2011 Mavs around Dirk were legit 9 deep in the playoffs that peaked at the right time. With answers on defense, ball handling and buckets outside of Dirk. I don't feel that way with this 2022 roster so its a work in progress.
