The series stars Deborah Ayorinde and Ashley Thomas and is set to premiere on Prime Video on April 9, 2021 I'm here to break it all down! It was a happy ending.
The family unit stayed strong together despite the effects of what fear a community will press. Tapdancing man in the ear was always a facade with pain easily wiped away, but years of negative narratives by an oppressive force can fool the victim. Luckily he wiped away the paint to see the truth. Nobody is going to agree with me, but I believe the bible is a wicked thing. It's interpreted for evildoers. The natural way without guidence is pure. I'm glad the family unit stayed strong together.
Why is it that shows like this always seem veer into the supernatural.

I really appreciate you taking the time to break this series down. I was spent emotionally when I finished it and turned to youtube to have someone decompress the experience for me. This series was impactful and made me do a lot of research that I should have done a long time ago. Our education in American public schools leaves out so much of our history and our ignorance is inexcusable. I appreciate that this series gave me another aspect of our past to dive into and a starting point and renewed vigor to learn about the history we are entrenched in.
i watched first few episodes. it is very good. disturbing but good.
Everyone says they like Bettys husband because he really wanted peace but turning a blind eye you are still apart of the problem!

True. He was pitiable but then so was Betty and it didn’t make her any less despicable. Still, the ending seems to imply that there’s hope for him.
My favorite part was when Henry told those guys to come up to the roof. The shear rage on his face....
That was one of my favourite parts too! The dialogue in that scene was so good, Henry's line & demeanour in that particular part gave me Denzel Washington vibes lol

It should had been written where he did have to come down and fight them sending them away bruised and bleeding. Henry character was restrained and held back while the wife character was the one laying on hands
Betty like most other Karen’s instead of confronting the toxic people in her life, she decides to scape goat innocent black people and release her frustrations onto them. Black people aren’t why you are miserable, you are miserable because you hate your life, your marriage, your parents, and the fact she couldn’t conceive. She resented Lucky for having something she felt she could never have..a family, most especially a family that genuinely loves her

She is! I was watching this show the whole time like "damn she fine...". I watched this AFTER watching Them: The Scare, which i think she looked even better in that one.
I thought Betty’s storyline was just to show that her problems had nothing to do with the Emroys and her hate for them lead to her fate.

My heart hurt for the Emory family. I wish it was all fictional but sadly not and still racism is going on today. I wanted to jump through the TV and beat down all those bigots. To think someone is less then and not valid because of the color of their skin is asinine and barbaric.

Lucky is my Favorite! She loves her family and does whatever she has to for them. I love episode 6 because of the slap! 👋 😆 Also when Henry was clenching his fists till he was bleeding. I believed that. I really loved the whole family. You are right that whole off subject story line with Betty wasn’t necessary but she did get what was coming to her.
Well then Amazon achieved their agenda. 🤦♀️

The way the episodes end make it impossible to stop right at the end it’s always something super crazy or disturbing!

I’m on episode 7 and I’m highly disturbed how black Americans are portrayed in movies ...tv...no money is worth making fun of our past & the despicable things our ancestors had too go through

The scene with the baby was so horrific I couldn't stop thinking about it because you know things like that really happened to black people at that time and there was nothing they could do about it. I still can't srop thinking about that sceme because it was so gut wrenching and horrifying.
I cried so hard I had to turn it off for a couple days to get my mind right
Very difficult to watch
Yeah it was rough
I told my sister that. I could see that happening often during that time especially in the south where you live in homes so far away from each other and there is nobody near to go to for help.
It messes me up, too, but the movie critic in me couldn't help but be taken out of the moment when the "bag" hit the floor. The impact did not have that thump sound like it should have, so it took me out of the moment for a split second. Other than that, damn, it was so heartbreaking. As a husband, I could never forgive myself if she was my wife. I think they did a good job of Henry trying to let his wife grieve, witnessing and knowing that she was slipping into a deep depression, but he had to be patient, reassure his daughters that mom was okay, and not disturb the process. Or so he thought. What is a man to do when it's too late?
I liked the Bett and George storyline because it shows how the neighbors let their racism deter them from actually saving Bett and finding the real threat. And shows Bett let her racism make her ignore red flags George gives

I think one of the moments that hit me the hardest in the feels was when Ruby paired herself in white paint to be “beautiful” it made me so sad

I thought it was poignant that Betty's hatred was the reason for being held "hostage" and ultimately her own demise. If she had an ounce of compassion she would've had a different fate.

During episode 5, you forgot to mention while they were playing “Cat in the bag” with her baby, she was also being raped while watching them do that to her baby. That was such a traumatizing, gut wrenching scene! 😩

I took a course in history and we read a book that will always have a profound impact on me. The things that our ancestors had to deal with ALL over America was horrifying. We moved from the South and went to other places that were just as bad or worse. America has been unkind to us for simply being black.

I believe the supernatural elements were metaphorical. It was a sort of anthropomorphic representation of the demons that live with you in the face of Black trauma. I believe this was beautifully done, with undertones of Jordan Peeles creativity. It makes you have to face/confront the realty of racism/segregation/hate. It was meant to trigger and traumatize.
After all our ancestors weren’t given any trigger warnings!!
I thought the same thing. I was debating with my husband who felt like they were really happening and I felt like the “demons” represented the internal turmoil, personal demons and trauma the family was experiencing from their past and their present

My favorite character was Da Tap Dance Man (BlackFace). Jeremiah Birkett did an amazing job... I mean phenomenal acting.
I wish that plot ended a bit stronger but that actor was great!

It’s half and half for black people. One side says it was raw and it didn’t sugarcoat the pain we went through while the other side says they’re tired of black families only being used for racism storylines. Me and my family watched it together and it was brutal, it was hard to stomach. Both of my parents experienced racism during their childhood and they still do every now and again. I couldn’t imagine living in a racist city back in the day or even today. The fight is never truly over, the kkk still exists, people get called sensitive when someone does blackface and racial bias still takes a tool etc. Thank you for this review

Of course racist people exist in every race, anyone can be racist. That’s just pure facts. Whenever someone speaks about racism, there’s always that one person that says “anyone can be racist, white people aren’t the only ones that are racist”. No one said it in the first place so why does it need to be mentioned? Everyone knows that racism and racist people appear in all races and genders. Stop trying to bring up arguments that didn’t need to be brung up in the first place.
I think the thing that kept me going through the show, despite how unsettling it was, was that I really wanted the family to survive. That's pretty much why I binged it. The actors were amazing at drawing you into the story and their respective characters, that I just couldn't stop. I was 100% rooting for this family to make it to the end.
Every scene of every episode was a gut punch. But episode 5. Episode 5 was a hot knife cutting through my heart. My stomach was churning. I wept. No supernatural demon could do what those demons did.

@@tgr.4550 That’s an observant distinction. A Villain is a Victim who uses her own pain to justify victimizing others. Learning what happened to Betty makes us pity, maybe even empathize, with her. But using that pain to justify torturing someone else, someone as innocent and vulnerable as she was, prevents us from sympathizing with her. So if a Villain is a Victim who identifies with her abuser and victimizes the vulnerable, then a Hero is a Victim who empathizes with the vulnerable, rejects her abuser, and rises up to be the Protector she never had. The only difference between Hero and a Villain is who they choose to identify with.

This show showed the terror of racism with a touch of disturbing horror. I binged it and felt beat up by the troupes. Still amazing job by the (main) actors, set design, effects and cinematography. The show really captures how the American Dream comes at the expense of the African American struggle. The super natural connection didn’t land that well overall but again great show. RIP sergeant
I thought the story about the reverend was interesting especially since it was filmed in black and white. It was a struggle for me due to the scariness. But the ending was powerful. I do have some questions tho.
Definitely agree that the super-natural connection made me check out a few times. I felt like it wasn’t all the way completely necessary.

I can’t believe how many people were able to binge this in one sitting, it was so hard to watch I had to do it one episode at a time with breaks in between after a couple days. The way this family was treated was so vile

I couldn't finish the series. I could feel the anger in me and I felt so troubled in my soul that's why I've come to see the review.
I will say that as so called "blacks" we should never invade white spaces, your enemies don't want you, they hate you why would you traumatize your wife and family like that. We can build our own, there are safe, lovely black Neighborhoods out here where wealthy and middle class blacks live too.

It’s easy to say we shouldn’t go where we’re unwanted like Betty did as well, when most of our ancestors have done the hard work of being the first and taking the type of ridicule and abuse demonstrated for us to be able to live a little better than them.

I'm torn because Alison pill's acting was absolutely brilliant, it was so good that I can't stand looking at her face now she makes me physically sick.........I guess I won't be watching Picard again.

But nope. He just drove off and left them to the racist mob. Clarke disappointed me.
I watched it over the course of the week. There wasn't anything unreal in these episodes...every act of violence and harassment has happened to ADOS and to some degree still happens. This series is art in the truest sense, a mirror of what happened. The fact that the family members went "out of it" and began to hallucinate, that's just human under the kind of intense trauma and unrelenting violence they were undergoing. And it was excellent to see behind the veil... to hear the conversations of the harassers and also to see how they neglected their own problems to obsesses about black people who didn't give them a minute's thought. Episode 5 was painful and the episode with the black couple traveling cross country only to be re-enslaved shattered my heart. Bravo to Little Marvin Lena Waithe, and every cast member that brought this project to life! These are our ancestors stories and they need to be told.

On episode 9 when the old preacher was at the grave grieving over the loss of his son. He asked God to send him a sign basically. Then Miles appeared. The way Miles appeared I automatically knew he was the devil because it reminded me of Oprah Winfrey’s “Beloved”.
I didn't even catch that. I'ma have to watch the whole season over again...lol

Dude the ending was betty experiencing the escape of slavery and captivity. She was running for freedom and she was so happy running through the field to freedom and she shot and most likely the second season she survived and advocates for blacks in the 60s. Well see

The part on the porch when she tells him "if a dog bites you put it down" later on she stabs the milkman he plays with her as if he is hurt by what she's done and she could just leave but he is playing with her he is a sociopath that loves to play with his food. I love the fact that she got far enough she thought she made it then he instantly Snipes her the moment she felt that bit of freedom.
It reminded me of a serial killer that kidnapped women brought them to his cabin in the woods he would release them and let them run free while he chased them down. I just can't remember his name.

I've never watched a more emotionally draining television show in my life, much less in one sitting. I put it on at noon, intending to just watch one episode, and then my entire Saturday was gone. I get that it won't be everyone's cup of tea and that's fine, but I have to heavily side-eye the 1 star review bombs on IMDB. I've got a kid, a career, two dogs, and a video game obsession. It is incredibly hard to keep my butt glued to a seat for a single episode of a show, but this one had me cancelling plans and feeding my kid Pop Tarts for lunch because I could. not. stop. watching.
The show had potential, but it undermined any thoughtful commentary with its poor taste and equally confusing horror. It seems as if the producers couldn't decide if they wanted to touch on a history riddled with racism or if they wanted cheap horror thrills. To start with such an enigmatic premise, to open up a subject of such severity and reality only to pair it with absolute fiction is not only a missed opportunity but a reflection of modern cinema. Instead of highlighting historical injustice in a crude yet accurate manner, the show folded to the evidential reality of cheap entertainment.

You guys are getting way too bent up on the racial themes and missing the fact that it's suppose to be a horror anthology a la AHS, The Terror, my personal fav, The Haunting of Hill House. When The Terror Season 2 came out, it had a handful of people in the Asian community bitching about certain aspects of the internment camp setting, but you really didn't see that many, nor did you see a bunch of white people complaining about how they were depicted even though there are a lot of parallels. And ya know why? Because it was a show meant to be scary, while exploring a period of time that was inherently scary for Asian people, this compounding the scariness. I can't really think of a time in US history where it's inherently scary or dangerous to be white, though I imagine some people too deep down an alt-right TH-cam death spiral would say that time is now. Did the writers go overboard with making white people the bad guys in this show? I could agree with that, I think that was a side effect of making it a claustrophobic environment where there just weren't any allies to depend on, isolating the family and making them more reliant on the supernatural entity because this is a horror programme. It's meant to scare you, or at least disturb you, the latter of which it seemed to succeed at, if nothing else.

I absolutely think the pie scene was NEEDED. It definitely made me think am I being mindful of my husband and him of myself with where we may have been and are now and forgetting the past? Are we supporting who we were and are now? I hope this makes sense but it had me thinking deeply about how we sometimes forget how our spouse had supported us through something. We’re able to get through it but down the line our spouse finds themselves with their own struggles and instead of supporting them we’ll say things like she’s crazy don’t mind her. Baby the pie was brilliant!!!!! She said let me remind you!!!!!!!!!!! Who was crazy!!!!!!!

It's best not to watch THEM alone. Oh boy the existential thoughts and anger towards white people this thing stirred up in me, yeah make sure you got a loved one with you on this one.
While watching this I went oneside at night to put out my rubbish some white kids walked by. And I stated getting worried that they would call me the N word (that used to happen to me alot in my old neighbourhood in Ireland), the show is soo powerful I honestly felt soo triggered. The show is amazing. By the way they didn't the kids just smiled at me and kept on with thier convo.

I watched this with my fiancée, we finished in a day, I’m big on history and African American studies and this series is a good visual experience for many story’s and memories of people who went through this time period.. despite it being a “horror genre” gave me the same feelings of roots and 12 years a slave.. excellent costumes, production and acting.

Great review I’m not sure if anyone peeped when Betty walked in house and they panned to the pictures her mom wasn’t in any of them.. then she popped up as they were talking . I took it as her dad seeing his daughters as wives, I could be wrong though and her telling him she loved him. It was sickening. Her story needed to be told because it showed where the foundation of her anger and hatred came from and how she considered the emorys as enemies whole time her whole squad of people she had surrounding her were her enemies. Her hatred for them only reflected her own insecurities and tragedies she faced. She met her ending/fate and I was here for it that may be sad to say but she dug a hole for the emorys to which she eventually fell in herself. The show was disturbing but true I didn’t expect a happy ending because as a race we haven’t gotten that happen ending 🤷🏽♀️

I am an the episode 8 now - here is my recommendation I posted on FB:
The show is supposed to be a horror story with some supernatural elements but for me the matter-of-fact, everyday persistent racism was horrifying enough. There is a scene when the older daughter (I think she is 13yo) - on her first day in new, all-white school, raises her hand to answer correctly the question about Emily Dickinson's poem that teacher just read to the class. In response - entire class - all white kids - jump out of their seats and start making monkey faces and noises. And the girl is sent to principal's office with a note that she was "disrupting the class".
I saw some review online criticizing the show for various things - "bland dialogue", "erratic directing", "wrong accent" (apparently some actors are British) or even "too much violence inflicted on the black family".
I think it is all hogwash.
Yes - the show is often hard to watch because of the violence (sometimes imaginary - often real) and constant and unrelenting fear that these people face. Deal with it. Directing... well OK - maybe storytelling could have slightly more gradual arch. But other than that it is solid - the surreal feel that occasionally reminded me of Cohen brothers' "Barton Fink. British actors? Really? - what about great British actor David Oyetokunbo Oyelowo playing MLK in "Selma"? - give me a break!
It is a good show - maybe not a masterpiece - but I think it is really important to watch it and remember that it was everyday reality 60 years ago. So we can all fight the direction that the ruling elites want to push this country these days - back to Jim Crow and incessantly simmering racial war. All that to stay in power. Racism still exists in 21st century because it keeps ultra-rich in power. And that is the the crime that CANNOT be forgiven.

What I took from why they were calling the mom crazy for seeing the mark is because, non of them were talking about what they were seeing. It’s like it was all a secret that they didn’t wanna tell each other.
I had a bunch of nightmares after that rape scene and baby Chester die 😩 I was scared to go to sleep last night after watching that episode

Same here! The one thing that annoyed the hell out of me in the series was the photo of Lucky and Chester, it literally looked like it was shot on a phone and printed at the pharmacist. Props, sets, and costumes were spot on except that photo!

I think the show was sequenced perfectly. They showed u the mental aspect that the family had to deal with then showed u the spiritual aspect and how it was affecting them mentally. I love the way they tied it all together.
I absolutely love your reviews but I don't agree with how you feel about Betty. I think her character and story were very important because the Emory family would not have been put through so much by their neighbors without Betty's influence. Also, the part with Betty's father gave us some possible insight as to why she's so dead inside and always keeps a phony smile on her face. I also like the part with Betty's end because she went to the milk man to be her savior but he ended up being her downfall.
I watched this in about 2 days I binged cause I heard about it from a friend and she said it was horror. Acting was amazing from all characters they had me hooked from episode 1 but I honestly agree on the majority of your points. Loving this video

I mean... That was life for our Black ancestors though. And it was not even that long ago because many of us have family members that lived through that time period and had to survive it. That's been the Black American experience for a very long time.

I actually thought the person who created Get Out, Us and Them were the exact same person. Had a similar structure with the Dark psychological thriller interwoven into the metaphorical aspect of the film. I knew alot of what the show illustrated was true because of my degree in history and reading a little more into the black experience post slavery and post the civil rights act. It was a clever way to actually depict the constant black fight (fight within due to heriditary trauma & then trauma from just being black because of white supremacists). I struggled to understand episode 9 however, do you think they tried to paint the man in the black hat as how religion was painted to black people? Almost gave me the impression that black people shouldn’t worship the bible because it was used to oppress our ancestors during slavery (which led to that very horrific scene). Overall, I actually loved the ending because to me it was like no matter what Black people stand strong through it all!
I actually liked the George and Betty subplot. It was a pleasant but horrifying surprise (Can I say it like that lol?). The woman thought she was a master manipulator and for a moment, I thought ole girl was going to lead George to the slaughter when it turned out to be the other way around. She bought and paid for what she got in the end.

I binged it but I made sure I was mentally ready. I watched it from a Stephen King/Needful Things perspective. I love how raw it was. I wish they dug deeper into why it was hard to sell the house. From the beginning, I had a sense that someone died in the house. The scene that triggered me the most was the one with Betty and her dad in the bathroom (I’m a trauma survivor so it was triggering).
I definitely recommend watching it.

I didn’t love this show, but I did like it.
There were too many unnecessary storylines that meant nothing in the grand scheme of things. Storylines that tried to humanize some of the racist white people (like with Betty or her husband), just felt extremely tone deaf or lazy.
In my opinion, Ruby had the most interesting storyline out of the whole family; but unfortunately, she barely had any screen-time to explore it.
Overall, this isn’t a season I would probably ever rewatch, but I am interested enough to continue with the show in general, as long as it isn’t about black trauma again. I’m tired of seeing us reduced to black trauma stories ALL THE TIME. Make a black horror movie or show without racism or police brutality, etc.

I think Henry walking in the house uninvited pouring himself a drink relieving in the restroom and having the opportunity to violate the bosses wife is the ultimate disrespect and that was his mission to accomplish. I thought I was going to stop looking after the first two episodes but something in me wanted to continue to watch. It was upsetting at times as well as heart pounding. Hatred and racism is definitely real. I am not a racist person but have experienced a few racist things. I love all people, no matter the color. I thank God Almighty for my life in the name of Jesus Christ Amen.
I finished the entire series at 1am. The first few episodes were boring but around 4 it picked up. I actually enjoyed it. I heard about the gerrymandering but never seen it on tv. They explained it quite well.
It made me realize how good we have it. We can do things they couldn’t. Also, we should stick together more often. It’s not always greener on the other side. Lastly, I understand why some of our elders are angry or secluded or whatever. Look at what they had to go through
i haven’t finished the series yet on ep. 4, can someone explain the doris storyline? is she imaginary to help ruby? and if so then why was her face shown to look like that in the janitors closet is there any backstory

Movie Files I watched until the end. It was quite disturbing especially the “cat in the bag” scene. Also, did you get the notion that Betty’s mother knew of the incestuous relationship between Betty and her father which is the reason she said, “I wish she hadn’t come back.” Plus, she is the one that brought Betty the 2 blankets.

I too was unable to watch more than two or three episodes at a time. At times the terror was just so constant I had clenched fists and nail marks in my palms. It really sucked after the episodes are over and it feels like not much has changed in regards to microaggressions and it makes me feel hopeless. I felt in this way, it was a great way to show the black experience. I also appreciate the showing of how the housing market was manipulated to push blacks into smaller poorer areas. Imagine if our history books explained this. I think this presented so many things in the black experience that others do not realize had such a huge impact on the black psyche over time. Also the continuous antagonizing that led blacks to literally go insane - the gaslighting and abuse was unbearable and beyond frustrating. I want to watch one more time so that I can pay more attention to small things. The first time I watch things, I get consumed by imagery, music, set and costumes so I usually miss small but important things. Lastly, I have zero sympathy for Betty.
I found it interesting how the film tied the aspect of cursed land into the mix in that certain spritual principalites rule certain locations...it was exicting to see in this type of film

It was nice to see a strong, intact black family depicted on screen. They had a lot of problems, but none of those problems involved problems with their marriage or their commitment to their family. They bonded together as a family unit against the world, as it should be. I really enjoyed seeing Henry's love for his daughters and his parenting. A black man doing a good job of parenting daughters, really enjoying being a dad, is something that is rarely seen on screen as well.
Episode 5 Was very sad it made me sick to my stomach and it made me very angry 😢😡
Was that the one set back in the past with the small town full of crazy religious people who follows their Pastor? and then at the end, it transitioned into 50's America?. If so, that was such a disturbing and sad episode.
