Oops...I Bought A Super Predator

- Hey everyone, today I'm sharing one of my latest additions to my fishroom, the hujeta gar (Ctenolucius hujeta)! I must admit, I do no research before buying this fish which is a big NO NO because usually when a person doesn't do research, they run into unexpected problems. In my case this fish is very slow growing and a top notch predator! He stares at my neighboring tanks full of bite size fish...if he wasn't in water he'd probably be drooling! 🤤 He has a lot of potential and this is just his introduction to my channel!

Appreciate your honesty! Great channel, new subscriber.
Thank You...I subbed Back!
Saw one of these in my LFS and I fell in love. I’ve been wanting something gar/characin related for the top of the tank and everything was either too big or too aggressive and when I researched this guy it’s the perfect size for my tank but I was just too worried about smaller fish getting eaten because these guys eat other fish like it’s their full time job. That’s awesome you bought this fish. Definitely on my bucket list. Very beautiful critter
Thank you, yes this fish is awesome. I have two now and they do a good job occupying the top of the tank, but they definitely will hunt fish small enough to eat
DWSDARIUS FISH TANKS that is awesome definitely keep the videos of them coming! A feeding video would be awesome
it'll work out! awesome fish, we all have made these purchases! mine was a redtail catfish, he now lives at the Houston Zoo!
Thanks...thats awesome, you can see it anytime at the zoo
That’s so cool, I never knew they existed until now 😂
Thanks...they are really cool
woah! for sure he will be stunning in the future
Thank You...I can't wait until he gets bigger!
As a kid I actually got 3 of these fish from a fish store and I fed them fish pellets. Idk why but they had a huge appetite for pellets and they lived for around 5 years. They never grew. Maybe it was because they only ate pellets. I would put my hand in the aquarium and make a ring with my fingers and they would swim through it. For the past few days I have been looking for the name and I finally found it.
Definitely because you fed em pellets lol
Live a lot longer mine is going on 10 yrs
tzzzzz awesome and good luck with him he's going to be a handful thanks for sharing 👍👍👍and please do an update on all your tanks
Thank You...I'll get that video up next Sunday!
He's gonna be huge lol can't wait to see him grow
Yes and he's growing faster than I expected!
HI Darius.. love the impulse ..nice to know experts fall into the clutches of the whim!! Well done.. great choice!! It will be fun to watch him grow!! =D ♥♥
Lol thanks Deb...yes who can resist the temptation!
Fascinating critter! It would be hard to pass up owning a species like that.
Thank you...yes though it can be a headache with its picky appetite, I'm loving the overall attitude of this fish!
Moral of the story
Research and research and research and research and research and research and
Then research some more
DIY JOEY had one it broke the tank it was in flooded the place
Rachel O'Leary has one now I think
Definitely...research can't be denied
Donna Kate Morgan I believe It was an alligator gar that did that not this fish.
THE HOLY BUTTFUNGUS
Ok I knew it had the word GAR in it I do believe that you are right
but a gar is a gar is a gar ambush preditors that get big and want live food
I like big fish I would love a goofy flower horns or a tank loaded with Discus or angels .my living space won't hold a 90- larger tank
Plus my landlord might not like it
aligator gars grow to 9 feet hjeta gars arent true gars they grow to a max of 30cm in captivity
Donna Kate Morgan Hujeta Gars aren't real gars...
AWESOME FISH!! One of my favorites.
Thank You, can't wait till he gets big enough for my 210 gallon
I like it, an impulse buy and doing the research after you buy it....we did same thing with our green spotted puffers. Best of luck with it👍
Thank you, so far I'm loving him!
Mine eats bloodworms eagerly, she also goes after the sinking shrimp pellets I feed to my panda corydoras... I guess I’m lucky...😅
Lucky indeed...mine is still very stubborn
Nice fish room !!
Thank you
He looks awesome. He almost looks like an odoe pike. Those I like too.
Thanks, yes they look really cool!
looks like you gonna build the monster tank after all lol
as i think that inch for the arowana will just grow and grow
Lol, yeah...I was going to either by a acrylic 300g or make a plywood tank which would most likely be bigger...still not sure which would be best...but it will knock at least 5-6 tanks off the fishroom
Awesome fish!
Thank You!
any recommendations for tank mates? btw cool vid👌😆
They really do good with most fish that are not too aggressive and of course not small enough to eat. I kept mine with mid sized cichlids (convicts, firemouths, jack dempsey, etc.) and they hardly showed him any attention
Beautiful!
Try live foods for lizards/geckos. Wingless fruit flies, springtails, etc.
Yeah floating foods might be best for this fish, thanks
Yep, and a lot of those crawly live foods for lizards and frogs are not too hard to find.
Very cool. Looks like a dart.
Thank you, yes perfect for hunting
Tiny slivers of chopped prawn works well dude. Have the same fish, same size.. had for 2 weeks.. absolutely love the guy.
Thanks...I have to try that
I just got one today mainly because of my love for the northern pike freshwater fish they look very similar awesome fish
Definitely like a miniature version
Hey DW I'm curious, do you still have this silver gar? I'm a new subscriber and having seen any of you videos about this fish anymore. I just got one myself and was wondering if one day I can put it with my peacock bass in the future. Seeing that now you h2abe a monster tank with peacock bass too.
Hey, no I traded it at my lfs because at that time I couldn't provide a full school
fun to watch, but i don't want to house any fish that wants to eat ME! LOL
Lol, yes when he gets bigger I'll have to wear gloves when I work on the tank
Very nice looking fish.
Thank You!
I can catch feeder guppies everywhere where i live
Wow, that's awesome...your in a tropical area?
WesleyAPEX where do u live
poor fish :( it's cruel (regardless of the 'circle of life'), surely there's another way
Luke Sygrove are you dumb
@@lukesygrove3194 nope
The snout of my hujeta is darkening and has white on it. Is it normal?
I have to get a Barracuda !😎😂 Great video Brother !👍
Thank you, they are cool fish!
DWSDARIUS FISH TANKS Absolutely !👍
I had one, I got him to eat the Carnivore Pellets from Hikari. Expensive food but so worth it. Once well fed I was able to keep it in a community 55 with tetras, Angels and stuff
That's awesome, my old aro loved those carnivore pellets...I'll give those a try
@@dwsdarius how did you go to getting it to take pellets?
I’m singing barracuda while I watch this
lol
I think u gotta try any fish that us fish keepers strike interest in. Cause u never know that fish might be the one u have the most luck with or enjoy the most. I like variety. Just my thoughts. Very awsome fish btw.
Thank You, yes that makes sense
Fish room is awesome 👍
Thank You!
DWSDARIUS FISH TANKS subd ya
Thanks...I'm already subbed to you
I was supposed to get a silver arowana but the supplier didn't have any in stock and I went to the LFS and did an impulse just like you and got a rocket gar.
What tank size is it in as of now
75 gallon
I had a malawi barracuda by itself and it wouldn't eat , so I put him in with my other fish and he started to eat, you might wanna try that.
Yes that's been the case with a few of my fish too...he could learn to eat if kept with other fish that behave close to him
Noooooo way that's so sick!
Thanks...awesome fish!
Mines super picky too. He wont eat anything but live fish. Im breeding guppies and mollies now in prep for future needs. Mine is a scardy cat though. Freaks out whenever i get near him. Mine has grown about 3/4" in a month. Not nearly as quick as a silver arowana, but he get big enough to eat all my 2" scissortails.
Wow, I think mine is growing at the same rate...I've been trying all types of floating foods and mine won't even budge to go after them, hopefully I can get him on pellets!
Do ya homework kids 😂😂
But out of all seriousness this fish is beautiful and your video is really good quality 😏
Lol...definitely! Thanks
Although they were originally thought to be characins, silver dollars are actually serrasalmids (like piranha), that came from a separate family of marine fish.
Hmmm...I'll have to look into that
Your right, just read it on Wikipedia; Learned something new today, thanks!
DWSDARIUS FISH TANKS no doubt, thanks for sharing this dope fish!
real nice
Thanks!
CooL fish , always wanted one 🦈
Besides being a very picky eater, I enjoying him!
Such an interesting fish
My dad has this same fish ! It's a great fish!
Nice...same size? I here larger sizes are rare
DWSDARIUS FISH TANKS yes he around 5 or 6 inches anything in captivity is rare to exeed 6 inches in a big tank you can get one a bit bigger but extremely rare and it's recommended not to put more than 1 of the same sex my dad bought 2 originally and one killed the other, he had him around 2 years !
that's cool...yeah I read either you have a mated pair of a large group...otherwise it'll be a battle
Where do you get a hujeta
From a seller on Ebay
New subscriber , wicked channel
Thank You!
do you think it will eat a cory catfish or are those too big if in the tank full grown guppies are available
It'll go for the the guppies first considering that cories stay towards the bottom, but if, lets say your cory darts to the surface (as they often do), a 6-7 inch hujeta gar could easily attack and kill and 2 inch cory, I just don't know if it'll be able to swallow it
what webstore do you shop that arowana's are only $30?!? a 4 incher here runs about $75-125
It was a personal seller on ebay...I don't see it anymore so he must have sold him. In NJ the average price is between $40-60...my old aro was just $20...but that was like 4 years ago
What is the max size of this fish?
Can you do an update tour of all your fishes?
Coming right up...10/22/17
where do you order fish from
This fish came from a personal seller from ebay, I really shop around at all stores and just look for either rare fish or good deals
beautiful specimen
Thank You!
After about two months i finally got mine to eat pellets last week, hes about 5 inches... two days later i find his severed head being eaten. Dont underestimate moray eels... what a horrible day
Wow!!!
Lmfaoo i got my datnoid without doing my research when it was the same size as yours and put it in the family community tank. Theres 2 fish in that tank now. A 5" datnoid and a tiger loach.
Lol I can imagine...as small as mine is he still swallows feeder his body length
Still have this fish??
cool fish
Thank You!
lol it looks so much like a gar
PepeTheFrog it is a gar
do they leap out the aquarium
Mine didn't, but they are prone to so its best to keep a lid on the tank
Mine eats pellets but i I don't know how to do it because i got it like that from the petstore
Lucky you, they must have trained them from young at the pet store
Do you have a heater in the tank for the fish?
Yes
@@dwsdarius I just got one the other day and he only eats bloodworms. I tried to give him live bait and he is big enough to eat it but still doesn't eat it.
where can i buy one of these?
I bought mine online from ebay, wetspottropicals.com also had some
Where about a in the Pacific does this fish come from?
They are not from the Pacific ocean, but rather from central and south America
Nice
Thank you!
Hujetas are awesome
Yes they are! Thanks for stopping by!

DWSDARIUS FISH TANKS
Pls help I got a "pair of yellow labs" they were fighting so I separated them both
It has been a day since separation then the "female" was actually a male can you guys help me find a way to reduce their aggressive behavior pls
Thanks in advance 😊
BTW
The tank has 8 hides/caves for them they are the only fish there and I am planning to add 3 or 4 jewel cichlids!
I got a pair and I got them to eat pellets :D Amazing fish
Wow I didn't even know those existed
They aren't so common...but they are cool!
This looks like an odoe pike I owned. It grew to a foot in no time. Fed him goldfish and shiners. Had him in a tank with a redfin pickerel. Pike totally dominated to the point I had to remove it.
Yeah this guy looks very similar but I think these are much milder
I love mine such an awesome fish
They are very entertaining!
I've had many predator fish it's only a couple days in the tank sometimes they won't eat at all for a week or so . But keep offering food sticks n pellets n all they usually will start eating it after getting used to the new tank n those new types of food. Fish On!
Thank You...yes this guy is stubborn but I won't let up
Darius i need help
I got a "pair" of yellow labs soon just finding out that my "female" was a male in disguise
What can I do to prevent them from fighting
i seperated them both from the main tank to try and restart the dominance in the tank but when they were seperated my "female" turned out to be a male ugh !!!!!!
Can you help me find a way to reduce their aggressive behavior
How many fish are in the main tank and what size is it? If the tank is big enough you can keep both males with limited amount of problems because of the other fish distracting them...if the tank isn't that big, I'd say 55 gallons or smaller they may fight more; but yellow labs aren't as bad as other mbuna so it most likely won't be to the death...in a community of African cichlids, one will be more dominate and show more color (darker /thicker black edges on fins) while the other hides more. Also what size are they, how are you certain that you have 2 males?
DWSDARIUS FISH TANKS 😭
The dominant male killed him
It is with a tiger oscar(it is the dominant fish in the whole tank) they are small so i keep them in a 15 gallon with 8 caves/hides
I am planning on getting a 55 or 75 for them when they grow bigger (the oscar is 2.5 inches while the yellow lab is 2.2 inches)
Wow sorry to hear. I must say even though they may be small a 15g is very small for these fish...also Oscars (a American cichlid) grows much faster than yellow labs and other African cichlids ...in a lot of cases the Oscar can grow big enough to eat the others
DWSDARIUS FISH TANKS fun fact the oscar was 1.5 inch when i got him(3 weeks ago) while the yellow lab was 2 inches
I am aware that the oscar is gonna grow 10 to 14 inches and i am just growing him out for now i am planning on getting a 75 or more gallons for my cichlids also i am getting 3 or 4 red jewel cichlids about to arrive tomorrow(1 inch)
Just randomly coming across your video but why not put together a cheap tank to hold feeder fish?
I love them in my pond
Try feeder guppies, they are a great and cheap way to feed picker eaters
Thanks, yes I have some mosquito fish growing out for him
Well u can try feeding shrimps.. Mine eats frozen shrimp
So far I tried freeze dried and he refuses it, I'll try frozen
He's beautiful!
Thank You!
AKA garpike. Catch them often. Considered an invasive pest here.
Wow, where at?
they are group fish, but he/she looks good man. gj
Thank you, yes I read that that school as juveniles but as adults the separate...if I get the chance I'll get more
did u manage to make him eat dead food? or do u buy living fishes the hole time?
How about guppies for feeders?
Yes that could work...I have some mosquito fish (similar to guppies) and they should reproduce at a decent rate! Thanks
Go to a river or pond/lake with a bucket and net and catch loads of minnows put them in a tank and feed him 1 a day
Not a bad idea
Yes sir. What you have there is an eating machine.
Lol, yes he's proving to be one!
Those "horns" arent horns they are used for breathing oxygen from the air
Just looked it up...your right its for gathering more oxygen in stagnant waters where they are from in the wild
From like a labrynth lung?
Or have charicins adapted differently?
How much do they cost?
Bought mine for $35
DWSDARIUS FISH TANKS Ok thanks
I have had one of these guys and mine grew very fast I fed mine minnows and goldfish in the beginning and moved on to sunfish fry from a pond I had. Size with most monsters is water quality and food supply, I did 40% water changes every week because I was worried about the water quality with so many other fish getting I to the system then being turned into waste. Also that estimate of a foot long is probably a bit underestimated mine was 14.5 inches when I sold him. I was told this fish should accept cut food like tilapia and scallops and other fresh fish cut up into small cubes however mine never did eat anything other then live fish.
Wow 14.5 inches, that's awesome! How long did it take to get that big?
Do You have bait shops were You live, minnows are a cheaper live food.
Thanks, haven't thought of that
Time for me to research!
Lol yes, I don't no why I don't do it...its not hard these days with all the recourses available
DWSDARIUS FISH TANKS man it's taking everything in me to not jump on this payara at my LFS....I'm extremely ignorant on the species and have yet to read more but just haven't yet 😯
wow, yeah those look like a awesome fish to keep...but you definitely want to learn as much as you can because they look pretty dangerous!
Wow did you know if you tape either side of the screen it fast forwards/rewinds
???
DWSDARIUS FISH TANKS .
Double tap or triple and onwards it fast forwards on the right side
And the left side rewinds pretty cool didn't know you could do that
better start breedin guppies n rosy reds. edit: try crickets too.
if i had a massive tank id keep 1 of these with 2 polyiptrus
Yes I have a tank of rosy reds...hopefully I can get them to breed!
He looks like beaker from the Muppets
Once they grow, they need live food. You can try freeze dried, etc. But mine only ate live feeders. They get really big and expect to be feeding him A LOT
Edit: He can take feeders now actually. Best recommended to just get him on that. I tried for 4 days to get mine on pellets, etc. but he resisted. They are interested in things moving. BTW, when having other fish with him, and he hungry, he will charge anything in that tank.
Thanks, mine is eating feeders now. How big is yours...and how long did it take to get that size?
Well, mine was hungry all the time and I was scared to let him go even a day without food because he charged my tiger barbs all the time when not fed. If you feed him a lot, it took mine a month to reach twice his original size. I had to get rid of him because I was putting 15 feeders in at once and he'd eat them all in two days. Ended up becoming too big, too hungry, and almost killed my tiger barbs (full sized tiger barbs).
Too bad he doesn't eat other stuff. Poor platties.
Lol, yes that the part the sucks
DWSDARIUS FISH TANKS hopefully in the future when it's more open to new things it'll try it.
I had a feeder tank full of guppies when I had one.
Yeah I have rosies for mine
Do you think south American cichlids can live with him?
Yes I kept mine with green terror and jags and they hardly noticed him
@@dwsdarius Thank you so much
give him some flow in the tank, i found a vid of them in the wild and the water runs hella fast
Thanks, I add a pump and see how he likes it
Get a minnow tank or guppie tank because they breed soooo much and are small!
Yes I have mosquito fish that I will be breeding for him
I got a 500gal, I'm thinking of getting one for
im getting one for my new 210 gal
I had one he was about 13” I let him go in a pond these fish get huge
That's the comment I was looking for! Most people don't see them bigger than 6", its good to know that 6" isn't the limit
You sure that wasn't a different species? I know Boulengerella spp. look similar and can get over 12", and they're close cousins of Ctenolucius hujeta (same family). Most sources say 12 inches is the typical max, but it's always possible.
My one loves em
Have you tried Pollack? Or imitation crab?
I haven't...this fish wants live only...if it doesn't resist him he doesn't want it
Try guppy feeders.
