    So that's why they wear those suits. Always wondered about that. Very interesting. Btw the good thing about Denis Villeneuve directing is that we all take a trip to France for a second when we say his name lol.
    PS. Congrats on reaching 1,000 subs. Keep it up the great content and 2k in no time 😎

    In the books the suits are described as dark grey, with a shiny slick look when new, before they get covered in dust. They had facemasks, hoods, and goggles. Over the top they would wear a hooded cloak to protect the suit from direct sunlight during the day. I can't remember the colour of the cloak, but I imagine it could be a sandy colour for better camouflage.
    Oh, they also had pumps in the heels.

      I think this "full" version of the stillsuit is actually shown in the new trailer 2 (out now in July 2021) in one scene: a fremen wearing something like a lamp on a long stick

      I keep seeing the words "heat exchange filaments" in Kynes' description of how the stillsuits worked. In essence, it's not just a water recycler, it's also a refrigerator. Otherwise, it'd be like wearing a scuba suit in the Sahara. Not comfortable...

    The stillsuits were only part of what Fremen wore when away from their sietch. They had robes over the stillsuits to better blend with both desert and rocks/mountains. The robes assisted with the stillsuit in keeping the wearer cooler and sweat less. The robes also blended in at night, as well.

    in pure Frank Herbert's fashon not much is known on how stillsuits look, but i love how their presence in the books is felt on each and every moment anyone has to challenge the desert, the way you have to move with it, the ways you have to breathe, or feel the sand. it ends up being an extension of oneself. so i really love what they are doing here, it looks like a very fitting and modular exoskeleton in a way. unlike older depictions: lifesaver on water ver (1984) or a normal soldier suit with desert garments(miniseries)

    I want to say that you should add something about the "Reclamation Chambers" which in the book are rooms in the sietch where Paul could take off his stillsuit, with the implication it was a room that acted as a stillsuit in reclaiming moisture. However, such a section may be better served in a video about the Sietch. I enjoyed this video very much, as it explains to people who have NOT read the books, (shame!) about the fascinating lore behind Frank Herbert's books. Will you do one on "Dragon in the Sea"? One of my all time favorites. ^_^ And of course "Whipping Star", "Destination Void" and other less well known titles. ^_^

This story has so many contextual facets to it...although i hope this newest movie will do this story justice...i don't think there is any better source than the book itself for creating this masterpiece.

    About the only part of the Stillsuit that needs work is the feet; in the book the stillsuit is one garment, the feet providing some of the pumping force necessary for the suit to work properly. I agree; that some of what the suit does with feces is disgusting, but other than that ugliness the suits were pretty remarkable. The David Lynch suits were interesting even though the black would've made them extremely uncomfortable in the desert and let's no forget that they left the head and face exposed to the elements. Not at all correct; since Arrakis has sustained winds of 320 kilometers per hour enough to sand blast off skin exposing bone. The suits of the Sci-fy miniseries while interesting with the coloring of the desert; I agree they were a one layered suit, made to look like a costume, and not at all like how the book describes the usage. Denis' suit seems to have the best of both former iterations of the Stillsuit, but again they never really show the feet. In the Sci-fy miniseries they used engineering boots; which I believe was a compromise. If the Stillsuit; was made in parts, the head would be first, then the torso, and finally the leggings with the boots molded into the body. Then, adornments like a bulletproofing and clasps to adjust the fit would be most helpful. About the only thing that; I believe, the Sci-fy miniseries got right, once the Freman got to a cave complex, they would shed the Stillsuit and change into ordinary clothing stored in the complex. Another thing; that the Sci-fy series tried to show was how to use moisture-seals in the desert. They're moisture-seals were nothing more than cave hangings used to blot out sunlight, but it you reread the book, the moisture-seals were; kind of made like, the Stillsuits. Keeping moisture from being lost to the heat of the day.

    The Sci-Fi channel's Dune suffered from its weird ass costume design. Pretty much everyone looked silly. The stillsuit wasn't that bad compared to say the Bene Gesserit.
    I liked Lynch's stillsuit design a lot, but these new ones seem more functional.

    First up, congratulations on the 1k+. It's well deserved! I agree with the still suits of the David lynch film, they do look 'practical ' perhaps if he made the actors wear lighter colours while out in the desert during the day....
    I have to say, when I saw sir Patrick in the pic my first thought? "I am locutus of borg" ;)
    I believe frank was onto something with the idea of a still suit, it's definitely something that should have/should be looked into especially with some of the harsh deserts we have on earth. Unfortunately I think the only practical use would be military related as it seems desert people on earth seem to (?) Manage ok. ...I'm ignorant about such things though as I live in Scotland, a suit that lacks water is preferred here.

    Great video.
    I am hoping that the Fremen are fully actualized in this film, for me the Fremen and Sardaukar tension was overlooked in the Lynch adaptation, to its detriment. As well, I would like to see them wear Jubba Cloaks in the deep desert for aesthetic and practical reasons, as stillsuits alone don't quite compliment visually stunning and majestic desert vista's. Flowing robes however, such as seen in David Lean's Lawrence of Arabia, capture the magical qualities of a visual medium perfectly.
    Cheers.

    I really like the '84 suits, they had the "slickness" that Jessica often mentions in her narration describing the suits, the visible catchpockets, and the fingerless gloves (one of the main places you sweat is your palms, and while Herbert accounted for that in the book, a fingerless glove that covers the palm but leaves the fingers exposed seems the most efficient compromise). The one thing I don't like is the lack of headcovering, since one of the other main places you sweat is the forehead, so catching and reclaiming that would be a big deal. For that, I really like the headgear on the miniseries suits, but yes, they were rather underwhelming beyond that. Villeneuve's Dune is pretty good, including the hoods, nose tubes, and face masks, but the hoods and masks aren't being worn nearly as often as they should be, given them emphasis on not wasting any moisture at all.

    The stillsuits being black actually does make functional sense because while they would absorb more heat from sunlight, what a lot of people forget is dark material ‘radiates’ heat very efficiently. Seeing the suit’s supposed to be a closed system, there’d be few options for cooling the wearer without heat being trapped in the suit other than conduction with the outside air and radiation.

    Like you, I thought a blend of the two suits would have made a better fit. However, I would have liked to have seen the Fremen wearing mantles or large cloaks over their stillsuit. (Covering yourself in a cloak and becoming a little dune was a thing.) Mainly, from a practical standpoint, keeping the sun off your body would have cooled you. Using the hood from a cloak would have given shade to your eyes and cut down on the glare from the sand when clear sight is necessary.
    I think it was Lady Jessica who had the thought about the Fremen's preoccupation with water, before she realized that it wasn't water but moisture that they were preoccupied with. Considering these facts, plus the safety that a cloak over their stillsuit would have offered, this would make more sense to me. (Thank you, USMC for giving me the opportunity to learn how to survive in a desert.)

      It’s something that writers and directors are just lazy about.
      People ensuring that they are recognized was how we got the rich traditions of heraldry in places like Europe and Japan where full body armor was a common thing.
      The relative anonymity and ability to impersonate others are major dramatic possibilities - just as true for stillsuits as it is for armor and space suits.
      The Expanse tried to touch on this with the Belter Creole language having a lot of hand gestures since it was a culture that spent a lot of time in suits.

    I have studied heat transfer in the past. The problem is the latent heat lost through sweating would be reclaimed again by the suit when it condenses. I can't see any fins on the suit so how much heat could they lose through convection? Black is also a bad colour. It has high emissivity but also high absorption. And that rubber looks pretty insulating. Perhaps if there were some solar cells sewn into the fabric it could lose some heat through the Peltier Effect, but that's very inefficient.

    Suits, costumes and props in movie have to represent their function, but must also look good on screen. Thats why spaceships in movies always seem to be bright color, even warships that would be better off blending in, and are usually shaped in a cool, aerodynamic fashion. A Borg cube is just as maneuverable as the Enterprise, in the vacuum of space. Same with the still suits. The black color of those in the 1984 movie stood out against the desert background so that you could actually see the actors, especially at a distance. In the real world, black would suck, but the color would be quickly covered in dust and actually blend in quite well. They aren't what I would call accurate to the books, but I do like the look of them.

    I'm actually a bit confused by the still suit. The whole reason humans sweat is to reject heat by evaporation of liquid from the skin. But the still suit traps it and prevents it from being carried away. We're told that there's a heat exchange going on, but without some sort of forced cooling, for instance using energy to pump heat to the surface of the still suit, that shouldn't be able to keep up. It's a fantastical element that works well with the themes of Dune, the preciousness of water, but I'm not sure it makes engineering sense.

    • @dragonson72
      @dragonson72 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I imagine the water is circulated through the entire suit allowing the cooling action, like blood through the body, as for the way this is done I'm not sure

    • @Bustermachine
      @Bustermachine 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@dragonson72 I mean yeah, sure, but the main benefit of sweat is the evaporative action. Heat of vaporization is an order of magnitude greater than simple closed loop cycling. Which is important on an oven planet.

    • @dragonson72
      @dragonson72 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree, I was simply making an observation on available information. I guess there is something in the suit that allows for heat to escape the suit

    • @rickwrites2612
      @rickwrites2612 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The sweat isn't kept against their skin, it goes through porous first layer like cotton under clothing and is collected. Just like irl when you sweat into your t-shirt under a hoody. Your t-shirt gets wet. In this case the hoody layer sucks the moisture from the t-shirt layer and collects then filters it. Continuously. There are several layers if I remember correctly, each does something different. ie air circulation as well. There's pump action in the heels that provides energy from walking. This video doesn't really explain it well.

    • @Bustermachine
      @Bustermachine 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@rickwrites2612 I understand all that. What I'm saying is that your body sweats for a reason and the function of sweat is performed by evaporation. The phase transition from liquid to gas pulls heat from the body with the evaporating liquid.
      But the water has to actually leave for that to work.
      If the sweat is recaptured, then the heat of vaporization shouldn't leave the body and you'd expect the user to overheat.

    The black could be broken up by beige/tan/browns in the form of tunics and cloaks or ghillie suit built to mesh with the uniform. A good cloak/ghillie would also serve as a tent/shelter or camouflage a warrior could lay under or hide stuff beneath. Black is a critical component to good camo.

I mean, where and how did they get the raw materials and where and how did they convert and manufacture those raw materials into the suits? The Fremen may have been inspired by bedouin peoples. But in the books, they were not described as a particularly nomadic culture.
      Nobody survives on the open desert for any greater length of time.
      They have stable villages/towns, in the form of their 'sietches'. And those vary in size and population.
      If they make stills and moisture traps, as well as dig cisterns for water caches, complete with predatory fish, to keep the sand trouts at bay... it makes sense that they would also have the means to produce equipment like still suits, thumpers, mola pistols and such.
      They dont have (or want) the resources to build Holtzman shields. But they still come across as a rather high tech culture, maintaining a minimalistic life style by necessity.
      Its also stated that fremen frequently trade with off world smugglers. At least in the uncharthed Deep Desert.
      That is my take anyway.

You'll notice Western soldiers or athletes active in deserts nearly all wear sunglasses (very useful in super bright hot light (which will burn your eyes btw after a while) and sandstorms)

    Herbert's novels are really all about the human sid eof things - characters, politics and so on. Most of the "technological" stuff was written as a useful plot device - personal shields, for example, were a way of bringing things like sword fights into the far future (and of course, preventing widespread use of laser weapons, a staunch feature of most sci-fi). Most of it doesn;t stand up to any sort of real scrutiny _and nor was it intended to_ - you just accept what the author gives you. It's why most of it is given very little detail and you just get a vague description. The stillsuits are actually a terrible idea because the inevitable result of weaing one would be to parboil the wearer to death in a very short time. The idea that sweat would evaporate through the first layer to achieve cooling doesn;t work: you still end up with essentially your own personal sauna with all that heat and moisture trapped inside it. You'd get hotter and hotter in short order, and even if that problem was solved, all that salty sweat would result in the skin breaking down and massive infections as it's an ideal breeding ground for bacteria. If nothing else, the stench would be unbearable. These things are pretty similar to the protective suits used by the miltary against chemical and biological weapons, and people can only wear those for relatively short periods. Imagine wearing a rubber wetsuit in Death Valley and you get some idea of what a stillsuit would be like. NASA astronauts have to wear a special cooling system - basically an undersuit that has tubes filled with fluids, which is pumped around kind of like a refridgerator because spacesuits trap heat. But liek I said, in the Dune universe you are just presented with something that has such-and-such effect. You're not meant to ponder about whether it would actually work. For example, the use of "atomics" is banned, but apparently, ten thousand years in the future no one worked out you don;t need them, you can create way more devastating wapons simply by dropping rocks from orbit.

      You forgot that next two letters are to deal with exactly what you stated.
      Second layer is full of heat exchange filament and salt reclamation in the third.

    • @richardgregory3684
      @richardgregory3684 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@DesperadoRecordsIntl The stillsuits as described owuldn;t work. The book states that they are permeable to perspiration to cool the body by the normal evaporative process. Except, of course, there isn;t one, because the suit itself is impermebale, so it owuld be basically your own personal greenhouse. In order to work effectively the heat exchange would require radiator fins to dissipate heat - which would be extremely inefficient in a hot enviroment and even more so in sunlight. The movie suits are probably the worst - they are _black_ which is absolutely crazy. Should be white or silver.

    Nerd Cookies, October 30, 2020: "Dune Lore: Who is the cousin of fremen-extra #13 in the first scene in the Sietch Tabr?"
    But seriously you will run out of major characters and important concepts to explain quite soon I think. Whats then? Will you talk about the sequels or is your channel focused only on what we are likely to see in the upcoming movie? I'd love to listen to your perspective on sequel characters, concepts, ideas, etc., should you decide to talk about them! :)

      My list is still pretty long.... I'm waiting for some more casting announcements as well. Most of these Lore videos are going to turn into part one once the movie comes out. Then I will cover what we can expect to see from them in part two. Once I'm done covering most of the main concepts and characters from the 1st film I will probably do some more expanded universe content (sequels)

    I like that Denis incorporated respiration moisture capture as alot of a bodies water can be lost simply by breathing. It looks like he also incorporated a shemag as well. This decision is pragmatic to keep cool and help battle dust that would be an obvious problem on Dune. It also hearkens to Middle Eastern culture that Herbert incorporated into his world.
    I think the the faded brownish dusty sanded grayish (lol I don't know how else to describe all that is going 2ith this color or at least what I am seeing) works on two levels. I think it appears to be a color that will certainly be less prone to radiant heating compared to the Lynch suit. It will certainly allow for better movement at night against the stark darkness that is the desert.
    So when looking at the intelligent design elements from water preservation to accessory & color choices, the suit alone and the obvious careful considerations involved, significantly reinforces my belief that Denis was the right choice to bring Dune to the big screen.
    Edit 8:34 I believe this why a mask covering the nose and mouth and goggles isn't used, when that would capture much more respiration water loss and wear worn in the books. Pedro's desire for more face time and less under the helmet time on Mando, demonstrates how logical choices or accurate to canon choices go out the window when it comes to not being seen. I think what we see is a nice compromise and while it is logical to wesr what Herbert wrote, it isn't practical nor is it so inadequate for the desired results that a massive amount of suspension is required.

    They would be earthy tan tones for the desert , but they may be black for the limitations of a film at the time, like when they made luces light saber gree because blue wouldnt be easily visible againt the sky back drop. The back made them stand out but still looks cool and tactical for the purpose of the movie.

    Many things aren't explained about stillsuits, but one thing that doesn't make sense at all is; how do and did the freman get the materials for making them? Remember that they lived there before there was real trade or perhaps, even other people. Their numbers are unknown (important point in the first book), and it wouldn't be if they bought tons and tons of materials for suits.

    Couple things on this: It seems like you assume that all the lumps in the Lynch model are catch pockets. They could be anything. Parts of the pumping system or parts of the filtering system. On this point, from a design and engineering perspective, it would be foolish to put the catch pockets in an area so likely to be exposed to light (heat) and damage. I'd put them in the backs of the thighs or along the ribcage under the arms.
    Also, the total volume of all these lumps seems ridiculously large to be housing water reclaimed from the body that one is also surviving on. I doubt there's as much as 2 pints of storage on a suit, as one would not need large volumes of storage if one is drinking it up almost as fast as it's filtered. Also on that note, it's a survival system. Supplementary. A human is never going to waste out as much water as one needs to ingest to survive.
    Oh, the buckles and the webbing at the waist look a lot like the harness of the grapple gun in Batman Begins.

      Also, do these guys have no need for vitamin d? A little known fact that few people outside the area knows about is that vitamin d deficiency is rife in the middle east... Most people in desert climates don't spend much time outside in sun see... For obvious reasons. Vitamin d deficiency also happens to be a problem in the Indian subcontinent too. These fremen suits probably need to account for this too! If they can deal with filtering out shit then letting in solar rays to permit vitamin d formation should be easy peasy!

    The comment of course is that they would be uncomfortable. Yes, think waste. Catheter tubes are not totally comfortable to insert, but hey can do. But the faecal waste is an issue. With limited water intake the watse is likely to be rather solid, so unless you have a colonoscopy bag which makes no sense unless the Fremen have them permanently, yer gonna to need a diaper. And thats one point, some of the art work shows rather tight "rear end" shots. So my point...I am thinking more a baggy trousers look. LOL.

    How do the Fremen manufacture and maintain such technologically complex suits? It would infer they would need a lot of upkeep, as well as cleaning. How do they do that without a massive industrial complex, which would infer they were maintained in cities. If so why did the Harkonnen limit access to the facilities? It would be easy enough to keep the Fremen in check if they could not survive in the desert for long.

    This is not a criticism of Elaine's video: In 'Dune' by Frank Herbert, in the chapter where Liet-Kynes is introduced, Kynes says, "...most Fremen in the open desert rub their hands with juice from the leaves of the creosote bush." My interpretation is that, therefore, as Chani and Stilgar are Fremen-born, they would not wear gloves and that gloves are for off-world wimps. Yet, in all of the publicity for the film, the two of them are always wearing gloves with their stillsuits. And Kynes is also wearing gloves. Personally I find that a bit disappointing. Sorry, but I thought some uber-nerdy clarification might be needed for some off-worlders who are trying to out-nerd me here. Listen here, I was out there nerding before you's even born, y'all!!!
