Hey Vince, great insights. I already noticed this almost a year ago (we started almost at the same time). But I started drawing with the goal to draw my own heroes and villains. In November 2021 I started drawing poses from reference but I put them in a different perspective or changed it a bit. I am still in that phase but it helps a lot to learn perspective and you have to look up a lot of stuff (anatomy books etc.). the progress is slow but once you got it you can draw it from the imagination. The best saying I heard back in 2009 was: what ever you do start with the end in mind... Congrats on your 1k. Your channel is one of my favorites. ❤️
Hi Ganther! I think I’m going to be following in your footsteps a bit with the direction I’m heading in. No heroes or villains but will definitely be needing to get a lot better at perspective and drawing from imagination. Totally agree with your quote. Love it! Thanks for the feedback.
Ohhhh, I too have fallen into this trap. And the worst part is that I kinda knew, but didn’t do much about it. Thank you for the reminder, though. This video has given me courage to draw what I want. That is, my own characters, not just Pinterest girls😂
Lol 😆 drawing Pinterest girls! The struggle is real. Yeah it is so easy to fall into this trap. It’s okay to have fun every now and then … it’s just when we start losing sight of our goals that it becomes a trap. If the goal is fun … then … yippee! But I also want to progress. Your post made me laugh. Thanks for sharing!
Its a double edged sword. Do what you like but also do what you need to practice. Even at 80% of skillevel you still get better but you dont get as disappointed when things doesnt turn out perfectly because you feel that you can always do better next time. That is my best tips for you and myself. Pump out drawings with a ballpoint pen and practice different aspects of what you want to archive and once in a while try to archive what you want and analyse what you need to improve more. For me its eyes from different angles. I can get really good looking heads now but the eyes destroys my drawings. So what should i practice? full body drawings or angles of eyes to get better at Full bodies? I know the answer.
It’s tough to find the balance … and this really depends on your goals. For me … I don’t get overly concerned about a direct ratio. Sometimes I feel like drawing directly from reference practicing the construction, sometimes I feel like trying something from imagination. While I don’t keep accurate ratios I take note if I haven’t done something in a while.
Hey ckmoore! Yeah the struggle is real! But I’ve been seeing some progress on my new path … I can only imagine a year from now … two years from now? It’s exciting to think about what the future could possibly hold. Keeps me motivated. And meanwhile really enjoying what I’m doing as well.
Bruh I have 5 years practicing and i still feel like a beginner XD. Dw mate. And about reproducing art Ethan Becker has a good take on it. Its not reproducing but breaking their art to understand how pros do things. you can select the things you want to practice following their art as a close reference.
Yip. The struggle is real. I’m finding there is a balance though. Sometimes you just have to draw something fun. But hopefully your art goals are also fun enough. There is a balance between rest and exercise 😉

I've been wrestling this a little bit as well. Look forward to seeing where you want to bring your art!
