Can I Learn To Draw ?
United States
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 15 พ.ค. 2021
Am I Too Old To Learn?
My name is Vincent Duncombe and in January 2021 I decided to begin learning how to draw. I have a full-time job, a wife, and two kids. This is going to be a journey! I plan to be in this for the long haul knowing that this will be a multiple year process. I plan to show everything! Every practice sheet, every learning, every failure, every success, and every emotion.
I will be doing multiple drawing courses. I want to give myself the best chance to progress and success. As a result I will be doing paid courses as well and reviewing them (again showing every practice sheet).
I'm excited to see just how good I can get and the progress that I am able to make. I hope that you find this journey interesting and informative.
Encourage me on my journey by subscribing and dropping tips, recommending courses that I should do, or just hitting a thumbs up on the videos.
Thanks!

Are you on the correct side of the bell curve? It is interesting the tricks our minds play on us as we approach art. We demand things of ourselves that we do not require for other activities. In the end these things do not matter. What do you think? Which side of the bell curve do you think you are on? How did you pull through? Leave a comment below.

Interesting! You can almost imagine an ellipse there, where the original box and the pins or axis is one "point" of the ellipse... An X or Y ellipse could help plot the next rotation. Gonna try that now actually and make sure I'm imagining this correctly...
Hey!…. You are doing a great job! I like your videos you motivate me to draw and I see a lot improvement in your drawings love it .👍👍👍👍👍

hi, vincent. thanks for sharing.
i have a question, the face at the ending was in the course how the draw and shade or you just you do it yoursef.
For some reason I feel like I have been mindlessly drawing from imagination and felt like spinning my wheels. I definitely need to draw more from references for now. I'm okay with that as I'm already seeing improvements.
Hi. I find your work and really inspiring. I wonder if you can already get a job with the level you have ?
Very helpful. Thanks!
Hi I love your videos but I need advice I've finally decided that I want to become a concept artist and I'm beginning with this kind of basics that you teach but I'm way worst than you. Any advice?;
Hi Korkk! So here is the advice … just keep in mind I’m just some guy on the internet ☺️. In my opinion the fastest way (technically speaking) to make progress is actually taking a course from a reputable source (online courses are excellent, some even free). Starting with the basics like a Draw a Box course (which is actually free) would get you on the road to good habits. Proko’s beginner course is likely good as well. Step 2 is to actually do the course. Don’t cheat yourself … put in the time and do what they tell you to do even if it feels weird. Stick with it until you see progress. This requires some dedication and patience. Some burn out and stop. But if you make it through you will be at a point where you can start to chart your own course/journey. I hope this helps!
You sound so happy and excited about that! I'm glad :)
lol. Yeah I was actually excited. I was trying to catch how this works for a while.
I will do my best this year the best I’ve ever done to raise my level of commitment thank you for the reminder gonna go back to the grind thank you brother
Sounds great! Just remember to have fun while at it. It is difficult to be committed to things we don’t enjoy. If you fell like a certain practice style is draining your energy. Then consider finding another way. If that happens to be the practice of a fundamental, then consider doing it only at certain times. And fill the rest of the time with things that keep you motivated. Hope this helps!
Amazing progress man. Did you end up going through the rest of the course?
I went through most of it. I did end up stopping when it started getting really technical. I did a video on it.
Thank you! Wow it took me years of dumb practice then found your video, now it all makes sens!! Thank you so much!!
Glad I could help. All the best on your journey!
Thank you so much for this. I feel so much better about the damn boxes now.
You’re welcome. Glad to be of assistance!
Hi, I have an important question if you could answer. I'm currently trying to get back to learn how to draw, 10 years later, at the age of 30. The thing is, I'm currently working with the course of Professor Raven Phoenix about drawing the human figures, which is the thing I like the most, however I've hit stagnation the last 2 months. I blame this stagnation to the lack of perspective knowledge, and the course of Mr. Phoenix doesn't teach perspective. Do you think taking Proko's course would be worth it? I find it pricy and many of his youtube videos are kinda rushed for me.
Hi tenshiabse! Unfortunately to my knowledge Proko’s course very lightly touched on perspective. It was mentioned a few times but not much help in explaining it. So in that sense it may not be much more help than the one you are taking. I’m actually wanting to improve at perspective myself. I feel this is also holding me back. I wish I had a better answer. It seems the courses on figure drawing focus so much on accurately coping … they talk a lot about construction … which helps if you know perspective but don’t really go into it much. Maybe they assume you have that already? I am still looking for a good resource that doesn’t get crazy technical for perspective. So sorry I couldn’t be of more assistance.
It’s inspiring to see your progress! Thanks for sharing your journey and I look forward to seeing more. Have you spent any time drawing animals? I’ve been having a hard time picking a specific subject to get good at.
First of all thanks for the kind words! I have spent some time with animals. I actually enjoy them somewhat. Most of my animal drawings were with a method learned in Draw a Box. I did a video on this (th-cam.com/video/Nvyw-3i2wjE/w-d-xo.htmlsi=kiOK-8tt-Kone-5c). If you don’t know what you are interested in drawing as yet I would recommend taking a peek at Draw a Box. It is free and has some great foundational concepts there.
Hey Vincent! I just started Proko's Figure Drawing course and I have a lot of trouble at capturing the gestures in 2 minutes. I'm stuck at the first section "Gesture" and was wondering if it was a good idea to move on to subsequent sections such as "The bean" and "Structure" first, then come back to 2 minute gestures for improvement. Thank you!!
Hey hanwenfu, this is a great question. I struggled with gestures a lot as well. I’m still not settled on whether this should be the first thing taught or not. But I can give some advice. 1. Get rid of the timer for a while. I found that a lot of frustration comes from rushing through a gesture and having it come out even worse than you know you can draw. This is not helpful for mental health. At least it was not for me. Time drills are for people who can already draw it slowly and want to simplify their gestures by limiting time. If you can’t draw it slow why do we think it will get magically better by drawing it fast? 2. When drawing it slow … still try to keep it just as simple. The extra time is not for putting extra marks on the page. It is for taking more time examining the gesture and really trying to figure out what is going on. Once you think you see it … then make the mark. 3. Good gestures are actually difficult. Give yourself grace. It WILL NOT look like Proko’s. But give it a good shot. A week or two of drawing consistently and then yes move on. Don’t worry … i doubt there are many things in drawing that will be mastered the first time. You will be back … again … and again … and again. Prioritize your sanity and you love of drawing … that matters most. Hope this helps!
Do you have any book/course recomedndations to get some good instruction to get to this level?
Good question. In the past I would normally give a lot of advice around this … and I can still give some things that I found helpful. But I will also encourage you to find material or books or courses that you personally find interesting and inspiring … as some resources that are very good and have been helpful to many artists I have found to just be boring and draining. There are some fundamental things you should look for … structure and construction is a key one. The learning tool should teach you how to construct the object with simple shapes and not just copy it. I have used Proko, draw a box, and love TomFox Draws stuff. Also a huge fan of Kim Jung Gi. Hope this helps!
Nice Sketches.
Thanks!
Tips and tricks videos will always be goated thanks for posting
Appreciate it!
The most important thing is people dont like to use references coz its easy that way thats what they think but you are not just copying thing you also learn alot from it thats what i believe... I have interest in drawing but didnt try that much but from this year from april i started it seriously and the progress is noticible. I prefer to use multiple artforms coz every arform teach something new.. I draw i paint and also doing ballpen drawings... Use sketchpens, paints, crosshatching whatever i get my hands into... And i had a list of 21 points and try to do every one of it in a day like shapes, crosshatching, painting, anatomy, foreshortning, dress folds etc. Tip is you dont have to draw in whole page divide one page in different pannels and draw small but everything.. And having patience is the key you dont know you are progressing unless you give hours to draw every detail as much as you can untill you satisfied... And the main thing is keep consistent if i can progress this much in only few months then anyone can keep drawing see you on the top❤
Thanks for the comment. Yes consistency is key. And loving what you do goes a long way in keeping you motivated and consistent. If you love using multiple methods and mediums then that is definitely something you should do. Great points. See you at the top!
Thank you for sharing. Any place you're pulling reference from other than imagination?
Hi Nicolas. I use grafit studio, posemeniacs, and photos I take myself. Thanks for the question.
9:16 is a key moment for every artist. Don't get frustrated and go back to that moment/drawing for motivation.
Thanks
Can i ask you what sketchbook do you use?
This a newer sketchbook that I bought. The brand is Pentalic. It’s okay but my favorite is by far still the Moleskine.
The problem I have seen for years, is that people want to see results immediately. That's not how this works. We live in a digital world where we are exposed to a lot of pieces of drawings are created per hour. It doesn't matter if it's manga, comic book, watercolor even AI art, people ask to themselves: "Am I going to get to such level?" Yes you can but there aren't shortcuts. You need to learn the process. Good luck to everyone who is in journey called: Drawing
So true! I think we get caught up on how fast … the most optimal way to progress … which leads to a lot of discouragement when you don’t feel like you are making the progress that was advertised. It’s a tough road. I say focus on the love of drawing first … not speed to progress … there will always be something you can do better.
Hey dude ! Love your progress, do you have an Instagram where you post these works? I would be more than happy to know from you
Sorry 😞 I don’t have an active instagram at this point. Maybe I may start posting again since several people are asking about it.
I think the effort is definitely warranted!
Thanks ☺️ appreciate the feedback and support!
Did u not have an older sketch book to show? No one is going to see the difference. All your comparenses just falls flat. Before and afters are just too minor for beginners to see.
Hi there! Yes I have older sketch books. I will likely do a flip through montage at some point. However, I do review all of the sketchbooks in previous videos in the event you want to see those. Thanks.
i’ve been drawing and studying everyday and i’ve been saying small improvements each time, this video will help me so much with improving in the future so thank you <3 ❤
Glad to hear that this was useful!
I think you're doing an excellent job. I've seen people who have been drawing longer than you and still can't draw convincing figures. My only suggestion to you is to try drawing men too and more body types (short, tall, fat, skinny, muscular, etc.)
Thanks. Good advice.
Do you have in instagram where you post ur stuff?
I do have an instagram account but I don’t really post anything there anymore. Couldn’t keep up with 2 platforms with my real life stuff and TH-cam creates a better community and more interaction with what I’m doing.
@@canilearntodraw2579 I see. You should start being more active and advertising it here when you think u have some spare time. You just take and post pics, after all. It'd be easier for us to look at your art/progress. Anyways, good luck!
May i ask, what you do for a living?
I work in IT. I’m a senior platform administrator at a large healthcare and insurance system.
@@canilearntodraw2579 i see man. It's really incredible seeing how you've improved and how much you have practiced while having a full time job and a family.
I just started a similar process of iterative drawing. It’s working great! Great video, the progress is amazing to see!
Appreciate it! Yeah I’m going to try and expand this process to some other areas where I struggle … foreshortening 🥺 lol. See how it goes. I’ll keep you all in the loop.
I see that Tom Fox's book is really influencing what you're doing now, which is a good thing! There's so much in his book that it can really keep you busy for a long time.
I love Tom Fox’s style. Considering taking a course he came out with at some point. Much of this was just from reference with a few references from his book. But the influence is definitely there! I spent quite a bit of time in that book. ☺️
This came at the right time , thank you for making this video
Glad it was helpful!
Art TH-camrs try not to make rotating a box a unbelievably complicated maths lesson that probably requires 12 different degrees to understand(LEVEL IMPOSSIBLE) but hey this guy managed to do it
😆 yeah most are really intimidating. Thanks.
Remember the 50% rule. They state you should be drawing half the time on things for fun. So for every hour spent doing draw a box exercises you should be drawing for fun for an hour. Yes that takes time, but should prevent burnout. Just a comment around his comment about being for kids and the grind etc. It is pretty intense, but I've found it to be worth it so far.
What sketchbook are you using for record this video?
This is a moleskine sketchbook. The larger notebook size.
Do you draw everyday?
Not everyday … but many days.
@@canilearntodraw2579 aw, I see did you have any drawing experience before you took it seriously?
nah, ima give up
😆 that’s the beauty of life. You can always quit at anytime … and it’s not always a bad thing either. I tell my kids this all the time. Don’t be afraid to quit. Think about it and if it’s the best decision … quit as fast as you can.
Man you are the real MVP
Appreciate the kind words 😊
Damn! your sketchbook is amazing. What resources -books / videos are you using to learn to draw in that technique?
Hi. Thanks for the compliment. For all the books and courses I have used in the past you would have to go through the videos. But I have been all over the place, Proko courses, draw a box, how to draw the marval way and Tomfox’s book to name a few. However a lot of it just comes with practice overtime. You try a technique the first time and you are horrible at it and leave it alone. Months later after practicing a lot of things that may seem like they are not directly related, you come back to that skill and notice that it is a bit easier. That’s what you are seeing here. Drawing directly has been a long process. Basically keep practicing keep drawing. And overall you will get better at drawing. It may sound vague … but the good news is it works and as long as you consistently do it you will get better.
Thank you this helped me out a lot
Glad to hear it!
Thanks for your honest journey, this is really comforting to beginners like me. We see hard work and good progress emanating from it :)
Hi Yuglut! Thanks for the comment. Really glad you are finding value in my journey.
The solution is simple, guys, AI is going to 3D Print food, then we won't need someone else to do harvesting 😀
How are you consistent with your like work on your studies ? Like the next subject looks very on par with the next one .
Hi Naya. Not sure if I’m understanding your question correctly but if you are asking about the consistency of the drawings that just comes with time. In a sense it is kind of like style. You don’t intentionally do it but your work tends to have a certain look. And that changes the more you or I learn.
Moleskines used to have card stock back in the day, not so much now.
That’s interesting. I just love how their sketch books feel and how the pages lay flatter than most.
