Am I Too Old To Learn?
My name is Vincent Duncombe and in January 2021 I decided to begin learning how to draw. I have a full-time job, a wife, and two kids. This is going to be a journey! I plan to be in this for the long haul knowing that this will be a multiple year process. I plan to show everything! Every practice sheet, every learning, every failure, every success, and every emotion.
I will be doing multiple drawing courses. I want to give myself the best chance to progress and success. As a result I will be doing paid courses as well and reviewing them (again showing every practice sheet).
I'm excited to see just how good I can get and the progress that I am able to make. I hope that you find this journey interesting and informative.
Encourage me on my journey by subscribing and dropping tips, recommending courses that I should do, or just hitting a thumbs up on the videos.
Thanks!

good stuff man... thanks
I just draw because i love seeing the final result. I hate the process.
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Thanks Vincent, this was great! Question, have you ever gotten together with people that are part of your community to draw? I have been following for a while, and have been taking similar classes, especially in regards to the figure. I was wondering if you ever get together with people online to draw, or if you even have the interest?
I think that problem you had with the drawing the camera from different angles is Spatial Awareness. I had to study a bunch on spatial awareness for test to get into sheet metal union back in 2010. Didn't cont even though I passed. Learning it help my drawing big time. Understanding how objects come together in a space. HVAC piping layout/design for say building.
What book did the assignments come from?
The Basic Principles of drawing people from imagination by Tom Fox
really helpful video seeing you improving give me push to continue drawing thx man
Nice to hear that! Your comment does the same for me. I think I should go and draw now … can’t let you down ☺️ … and it’s fun’s so might as well 😋
Can you share the name of the course that you have been referencing in the video please?
The Basic Principles of drawing people from imagination by Tom Fox
Oh boy that i have a long rant on courses coming given my last few courses ive been trying to study First of all, Tom Fox´s course is absolutely phenomenal and its what taught me the most of what i know for art and how to do art, but ive done that course about 3 years ago by now so a lot of that foundation is probably a bit lost right now, i will also mention Sorie Kim´s course also in domestika is equally as phenomenal and both are a must. Just these last few months ive been trying to study from other guys, which i don't really want to name and give them bad reputation, but both courses are for creating compositions in illustrations, with worldbuilding, landscapes and characters. But honestly both teachers were constantly really condescending to the point they would be rude, or they will skip a lot of the processes in their videos to you have to take for granted that you will not see how they do certain things or their thought process on how to shade (so on and so forth), one of them even had a 5 hour video of them unedited where they just draw with no input whatsoever on what he is doing or why is he doing it, and its a 40 hour long course! To the point that ive been bashing my head around them and i started forgetting to have fun or i wouldn't even draw because the things they were doing were off my limits, its been a really frustrating experience and it was a constant reminder of how much in just 2 hours Tom Fox was able to show so much knowledge and being able to actually follow him through the whole course and quite literally have FUN with him compared to a 40 HOUR LONG COURSE where the guy is constantly condescending to the viewer and its a genuine chore to get through the videos. I dont remember the last time i actually felt so depressed about my art before and after years of experience it was baffling to see me struggle so much with this. I think that i really needed your video quite literally RIGHT NOW because of how much these last 2 courses got to me, thank you for reminding me of Tom and to love what im doing.
Yip all courses are not created equal. I think I’ve been fortunate so far to sign up for pretty good ones. Maybe I should take a bad course just for comparison 🤔
what a great video i hope you have a wonderful day
Thanks for taking time just to brighten my day. Really appreciate it! Hope you have a great day as well!
Yooooooooooo I can't thank you enough for this detail explanation ❤ OMG
It was my pleasure. I was so excited I couldn’t wait to share it!
What course is this?
The Basic Principles of drawing people from imagination by Tom Fox
I owe you my first born child, sir. Thank you for giving me hope after years of frustration and hopelessness.
Haha. I’m glad to hear you found this helpful!
When is the payment 😂
Nice video with good advices I wanted to ask you that I have seen many artist draw the ribcage & pelvis tilted but in your drawing I see it's not tilted can you please explain 😊
You can tilt it. For the box mannequin it doesn’t matter quite as much. Some of them I add more of a tilt for others not so much. No reason behind it though other than keeping it simple.
This video really spoke to me and is something i needed to hear. I'd consider myself somewhere between the middle and bottom stage but closer to the bottom. I've been drawing consistently for over 11 years but thanks to having a mild form of Spastic Cerebral Palsy my improvement seems to constantly hit a ceiling i cant break through. I've gotten to the point where i can somewhat draw simple cartoony things like Hanna Barbera or Cartoon Network characters i loved as a kid, but i still can't draw anything more complicated like Comic Books Heroes, Anime and Manga characters and anything realistic. Ironically i can do the guidelines for those more complex things just fine, but when it comes to adding the details my hand just won't do the necessary intricate linework needed and it ends up all messy and scribbly. My cartoon drawings also still end up a bit scribbly but still workable.
I'm glad this video could help. 11 years is a long time to consistently be drawing. I hope that this helps you to remember to look for joy in the things you are currently able to do. Some think of this as settling but it is not. It’s the path to get you further down the road towards your goal.
Domestika breaks my heart anymore. They used to offer great discounts; I could get courses for like 6-8 bucks each at times. I think they've put an end to that completely, and only try to push people into their subscription model. They've probably made more from me than I'd even have paid for a sub, but I refuse to be locked into something like that. I might be done paying them another cent. Instead, I'll keep burning up their servers, working through the backlog of courses I've paid for a la carte. Great video. Really digging your channel.
(Luckily, I've already paid for this one 😁)
Same! I hate that we are going on a subscription model for everything 😭
Yeah everyone is going subscription. It’s sad. I just paid for the one course i actually wanted. lol.
Hey Vincent moving forward what type of courses or exercises do you have planned for yourself? Im also wondering what your plan is on improving your head construction, will you start filling pages with heads and drawing them bigger so that you cant simplify and have have to draw all of the details of the face or do you plan on going to different art resources, going back to the proko course or isolating different facial features or landmarks? Best of luck
Hey mind minute. Good question. I don’t know if I will do a deep dive as yet into faces. I think there is still quite a bit I need to learn at the level I am at currently. I think I am entering a zone where I have learned a lot of new things look like I should move forward. But drawing from imagination requires quite a bit of repetition. I think this year will be filled with a lot of repetitions to fully grasp what I have learned and am learning. I’m also toying with the idea of signing up for ArtWad. I like the whole structure approach to drawing and I have been curious about what he has to offer.
This is really helpful. Great video
Glad it was helpful!
Do you have an instagram or patreon or anything of the sort where we can follow your art besides youtube? Id support you for sure! If you did walk throughs of how your process works with drawing from imagination or from reference would also be great and highly educational!
Hi TheDemonator! I’m honored to hear that. I don’t have any additional places where I post currently. I have an instagram account but I don’t currently post anything there. I hear what you are saying and I will consider this as I plan for the future. Truly appreciate this.
3:01 It's funny that you say you skipped the contour because that was what immediately came to my attention when looking at the clothed people - "oh, he didn't add an actual body contour, that is a cube wearing a shirt". The majority of my study for years has been contour-focused and I've only gotten more into doing form and still life studies in the past few weeks, so it would be expected that I'd be sensitive to that. But I have had the opposite problem - I can get a nice contour, but I don't have the skill with form to keep it from floating around if I try to work from imagination. Just a little bit of work with still life has done a lot to clean it up, though, so maybe I'll get that more settled this year.
Lol got me! Yeah I think I agree with your assessment. A cube wearing a shirt lol. But yeah I think this is the weakness of the box mannequin. I also think it takes away some of the dynamism from the poses as well. I’ll have to work on this. How do you normally practice your contour? Could be that I was just thinking about it the wrong way.
Great work! Such an inspiration for me that started drawing at 42 😊 One question, for the mannequins, are you taking the poses from references? Or completely going from imagination. Since you’re in practice mode, understanding the pose itself can be a challenge (overlaps, flow, etc)
Thanks! In my sketchbook the mannequins are both from reference and from imagination. However the final project is all from imagination.
whats the name of the sketchbook?
The one in this video is a moleskin.
What kind of materials are you using? Line are so clean
Thanks. It’s just a regular bic mechanical pencil, micron felt tip liners, and ink diluted with water.
Hello, Vincent. Thank you for sharing your skills, observations and thoughts. I would like to ask you how you decided that gestue drawing is enough? Many people talk about this skill, but there is very little information on how to move from this to further techniques.
Hi. I’m not sure what you mean by gestures drawing being enough. Can you say more?
@@canilearntodraw2579 Sorry Vincent if I'm being too forward. I'll rephrase the question. From your current position and skills, how do you rate the gestures drawing skill? Do you use it now when drawing figures/mannequins?
You should have given the number of days or months you spent on each section :)
Yeah I have had several different ideas around keeping track of time. In some of the earlier days I use to keep track of how many hours spent on some of the academic drawings. I often wonder how helpful things like that are. They are cool to see but not sure how helpful.
great to see..so many tutorials and I get overwhelmed and tried to do it all at once so I got nowhere. Will try this too:)
Sounds good all the best! I’m rooting for you!
isaw one of your other videos and noticed this method bc I just took this course recently on domestika, I need to get the hang of drawing boxes. with time it'll get better. thanks for the video!
Yes with time it will get better. It takes some trial and error. Eventually it starts to click. I remember in the beginning trying to get the boxes to align to create a mannequin in the Proko figure drawing course. The struggle was real. I was so excited when my robo beans started looking better.
I also appreciate you mentioning which lessons you skip. I try to do each video and I end up procrastinating but this is encouraging me to focus on what I need to study vs trying to do everything. thank you!
for me, I want to master my craft. that takes time, dedication, discipline, and patience. this is not something that happens overnight. this is a lifestyle, this is something that consumes me. there is so much to learn ( and I still know next to nothing - even when I'd get to a AAA quality level I'd probably still feel the same way I do right now ). anatomy, perspective, color & light, etc. are all things to master. but I do one thing at a time. I have my vision, and I break that down into tangible steps I can devote time and energy into every single day. I want to truly understand the fundamentals. for anatomy, I break it down into the head, the torso, the arms, and the legs. but I don't just do studies of photos. no. I want to understand the skeletal structure first and foremost. what veins does that area have? where do they connect? what muscles are in the area? where do they connect, and how do the move / flex? what are the proportions of these forms? then at the end I can do some studies of faces for example. but at that point I'm not learning at the surface, I am practicing rendering these forms after hours and hours and hours of learning and studying their foundations. if I just tried to do studies of faces, then I'd be great at drawing faces in a few months. but do I actually understand the inner workings of the face? probably not. and that is the level of knowledge and mastery I am aiming for. that takes a lifetime to accomplish. since there is much to learn, I pick ONE thing to learn and do one thing at a time. for now, it's anatomy with the head first. next year I may learn creature anatomy ( since it's similar to human anatomy, but human anatomy is much more important to learn first ), and lastly, this is my own path. I am figuring all of this out on my own. at the end of the day it is up to me to get to work and learn what works for me and what I want to focus on. so learn what works for you, decide what you want to work on first, hold your vision, and get after it
Hi! I think this approach is great. Slow and steady. This is something I have heard a few people talk about. Give you brain time to incorporate the new information through practice before moving on to another topic. This is very important. Hopefully others find this post helpful as well.
Hi, When you say you have finished Tom Fox's book, do you mean that you have reproduced all the drawings from his book? What does finishing a book mean to you? And did you try to memorize all the muscles by heart, or did you let the process come naturally into your memory?
Good question. What I meant was that I drew almost all the images in the book. But this definitely shouldn’t be confused with mastering or even memorizing. Still a lot of work ahead. But really every bit helps even when you don’t see it. You are giving your brain puzzle pieces and one day it will be able to put it together. So you don’t have to do exactly what I did. It was just said to show that I had put in the work on that book.
@@canilearntodraw2579 You are so inspiring ! Thanks from France
@@canilearntodraw2579 Hi, I have the question ! Did you also reproduced the bad examples ? (sometimes Tom makes a "bad" example, to show us better the good example) and how long did you take to finish the book ?
I'm struggling with this now. When I add detail, it's ugly. =)
Sorry to hear that. I wish I had good advice. I probably wouldn’t be able to help unless I actually saw the drawing. I have found that those giving the free advice tend not to be that good. So I feel your pain. Hang in there. Likely what helped is that this wasn’t my first course. It was my third. I had already done 2 of Proko classes. So I did have a head start.
this is me with shapes, i’ve been trying to study and practice shapes before moving to forms and even though it can get monotonous at times i know these fundamentals are worth it. but does anyone have any good exercises for shapes?
When you say shapes do you mean shape design? This could be a difficult one. I think i struggled with this as well. You get better with time. I still struggle with this when it comes to shadow shapes.
Thank you 🔥🔥
Thanks for the feedback!
Me starting the video: this guy can't really be this giddy about this rotation trick. Me immediately after you demonstrate the first rotation: I am ALSO this giddy about this rotation trick.
Lol 😆. Love this. Yeah this was an exciting break through for me. Now I can finally use all of this to do my box mannequins. I was truly excited. Lol.
I´m speechlees with the fact of, how many sketchbooks have you complited?, Consistency is the key to improving and that feeling of happiness when you finaly draw something you wanted and worked for, is something I want to maintain throughout my life, your channel found me at the time I needed it most, your words really got to me, new suscriber!!

thanks
Thanks for the feedback
woah
Lol
Hey Vincent, would you be willing to be an art mentor? Let me know, I would like someone to review my art with etc.
Hi. Currently the answer is no unfortunately. My full time job is a lot. My life is pretty full right now. Who knows what the future holds though!
Ok totally understand. Thanks for the reply. Let me know in the future if you were to open a discord chat or something to share drawings and other info.
So what do you do? YOU DRAW MORE OF THEM😂
Lol. Draw more always seems to be the right answer. Lol
It’s truly inspiring to see how much you’ve improved over time! It would be incredibly helpful if you could create a video that outlines a step-by-step plan for people to follow. This way, they won’t feel lost and can navigate their journeys more easily. I believe it would be a valuable resource for many! =D
Thanks for the idea! I might do that! It will change overtime as I learn more. But great idea. Thanks
It took you 2 years and 10 months to master this subject?
Master? Lol. Still not mastered so whether this is fast learning or slow learning. The point is to be excited about the opportunities we have and that we are not where we use to be even if we are not yet where we want to be.
@canilearntodraw2579 well in your video there is a watermark that says "2 years and 10 months" I read that and I assumed it took you 2 years to master that topic
what course are you taking? Unfortunately the only course im taking rn is for my degree and the instructor doesnt really draw much and just gives us assignments
Hi. I just finished the basics of drawing people from imagination by Tom Fox.
how much did the course cost? is like to take an anatomy study course, as thinking about joining Skillshare but don't have enough to pay over $100 for a year
I’m actually grateful for this video. The Tom fox course was only 1£ and it’s the 1st course I’ve paid for learning art. Your added examples for the mannequin has really helped also. Thank you.
Glad you found this helpful!
Thank you for sharing this method. It certainly helps to create these rotations in your mind.
Thanks. Glad this helps!
Well spoken, but I think it would be even more helpful if you were explicit on why some people struggle with appreciating their own art: perfectionism. I am not a psychologist, so I may very well be wrong, but it is my understanding that perfectionism has underlying psychological reasons such as, wittingly or unwittingly, wanting acceptance or to be seen. Unless one recognize that perfectionism, i.e. a possible unanswered need to feel acceptance, hinders you to feel joy or happiness, it really doesn't matter how good, famous and rich these personality type become, they will always feel empty, like a fake or failure, inside.
Well said yourself. Yes, I think your highlighting perfectionism as a key issue is correct. It’s something I constantly fight against.
What we need to learn depends only on what we wants to achieve. Not taking this into account is why most drawing advice does not work. I.e. you may be practising, but are you practising the right things to help you develop? Also, is it the process of drawing we enjoy or the end result? I.e. do we care if we develop or not, or do we just draw because we like to draw? Perfectionist are personality types that cares for the end result. This is their strength AND weakness. The need for perfection drives them to go the miles and becomes masters. However, at the same time they hate their own work, no matter how skilful they become. A perfectionist will always feel they lack something. This is a bit sad, because perfectionist may become excellent at what they do, praised by everyone, but on the inside, they feel empty, unable to find their own inner peace. There is always that new hill to climb, or so their inner voice keeps telling them....
It’s that imposter syndrome that keeps on sneaking up on the perfectionist.
Thanks <3
You’re welcome
Beginner here. Wondering if, prior to this course, are there other Proko courses that I should take? Is there a progression that one should follow such as starting with drawing basics/perspective/etc? Thanks.
Hi! If you are an absolute beginner I think Proko’s beginner basics course is the best. I likely would have done that one if it was out when I started. I don’t think there is a correct order. But getting a basics course under your belt first may help avoid some frustration. But the most important thing is to relax. This is a hike … not a race or even a marathon. Remember to constantly do what they tell you not what you think looks well or feels right. Something’s take a while to learn and it may get worse before it gets better.
@@canilearntodraw2579 thank you for the thoughtful response and advice. I appreciate it. I’ll enroll in the basics course.
