That was an enjoyably polite and respectful interview by Clark, speaking to them as musicians working hard to get their music out, and not as a "girl group" oddity. Clark always seemed like a pretty class act to me.
This is so great to see! It's like a little trip back to the early 80s--except that AB never looked this good (even when new) on my TV back then! I love the fact that The Bangles were obviously still a new band on the charts--as Dick spreads the interview between all the members. Not too long after this Susanna would be getting all the attention!
gschultz9 I didn't even know who The Bangles were, Like everyone, I didn't know how big they would become, & that 35 years later, we would still be talking about them. They were so much better back then. Annette was the prettiest, then Susanna, then Annette left, & Susanna became the prettiest (to the media & a, lot of people ), it was about the music then. I'm happy that all of them are together again. They're older now & they're doing it on their own terms. They have all held up well.
I❤Annette! She was so cute & friendly in this interview. It's good to have her back in the group. She was(& is), the most talented & versatile of all The Bangles.
@@smurphftw2008 I will say this. I don't know that she's more talented. She does sing and has an amazing voice. It's why she left the Bangles. To be lead singer of her boyfriends band. But she's more of a Country singer style. I don't think her voice really blends with the harmonies of the other girls. She does play multiple musical instruments.
Actually, she back in the band now. She started performing around 2014 with them and become the bass player again in like 2016. When they did the release of Ladies and Gentlemen, the Bangles. You can catch her on TH-cam and she does a great job.
Actually she's been back since 2016. She's done a lot of concerts and shows since. There is a concert she did in May of 1983 on TH-cam at a ZOO in New Jersey.
I honestly never though all these years later, that Annette would come back and be in the band again. It's crazy how life works. Talk about a complete circle.
@@sambradley2975 That's precisely the reason. This is one of the earliest TV recordings and here Susanna uses her 360. This must be the one that fell out of favour after she was persauded to have the fretboard resurfaced. Presumably that lead to he aquistion of the 1996 either in original fireglow or jetglow as is appeared. It remains her TV guitar as she puts it.
So young so short so cute. Hmmm Susanna Hoffs was a teen crush of mine. Poster of her on my wall. Here I'm a punk and metal head and a picture of her lol.My father pretty much let me decorate my room as I saw fit as long as it wasn't vulger destructive and was kept clean. I had pictures and posters of metal bands punk bands surfing waves and surfers. I loved surfing and the beach. But in between my iron maiden poster and a slayer poster was Susanna hoffs. My friends didn't blame me or talk shit because most teens back then had the hots for her.
@@sambradley2975 There's another video of this interview out there that shows the full interview with the band (including Debbie). Not sure why they cut it off here.
@@sambradley2975 Honestly, I preferred the idea of each one taking a verse. It's just too bad there wasn't fourth verse so that they all got one. And, of course, neither Vicki nor Michael ever sang lead on any of the group's other 'hits.'
Susanna Hoffs sounded so much better and down to earth here before the executives made her out to be a sex siren and her voice and personality changed.
I agree that her singing voice definitely changed (it became much more "girly" and less rich and full), but can you clarify what you mean when you say her personality changed? I've seen interviews of the Bangles both before and after they hit it big and didn't really detect a change in her behavior or demeanor. Do you have an example?
Yes, unfortunately,& that's what led to their demise. They made her branch out way too early, she made the 1987 bomb "The Allnighter ", she was exploited for her good looks, the band suffered, many of the hits they had, Susanna sang lead (except for the Egyptian song), I think it was unfair to both Susanna & The Bangles, the music suffered greatly from it, but now things are so much better, they make their own kind of music, they are in control.😊🎼🎸

Annette Zilinskas is so electrifying in this performance ❤️❤️❤️❤️.She is my favorite Bangle.
It's great to have Annette back with the band. :)
All of them were (& still are ) great, especially Annette. 🎼🎸
I saw them on that tour at the Hollywood Palladium. Won me over immediately!
They are just so damn cute! And talented. And wonderful. I want another Bangles!!!
I love how shy and naive they are here compared to later in their career.

Yes, humble beginnings.
Hard to believe that impish little one in the middle became one of the most beautiful women ever.
I prefer her look here to later on.
But she already had that sexy Ricky 6.

Honest question. What makes you say that? She doesn't sing and as far as I know she only plays bass.
Michael Steele >>>>>>>> Annette Zilinskas
@@smurphftw2008 Annette plays many instruments and the most awesome, powerful singing voice. Listen to Blood on the Saddle!

The Bangles were so much better in the early days, it was about the music, their music was organic & pure. 🎼🎸
Super Music Band!!
I love them since1985*
'Well she held a bass guitar and she was playing in a band,
And she stood just like Zilinskas, now I am her biggest fan'
...a smithereens reference, who's also a great band. i would of loved to see them tour together.
Oh nice to see this early interview of the Bangles. Dick Clark was an amazing host and a champion of new music in those days. :-)
How right Vicki was about radio. Even more so now.
Last known appearance of Annette. As with the 5th Beatle and with Denise Crosby on Star Trek, it just happens
SpreadingtheMuse She came back to The Bangles, first as a series of guest appearances, & hopefully now as a returning member to her old group.
She has returned to The Bangles officially according to many accounts.
But she would come back, she's still back with them. ❤🎼🎸

They appeared before & after they became famous. 🎼
I love how that Rickenbacker is bigger than Susanna Hoffs.
RobotShlomo I wonder if she plays a Rickenbacker because John Lennon played one.
@@sambradley2975 They did say they were heavily influenced by the Beatles and the Byrds so..could be.
Try being the same height as Susanna and playing a Fender Jazz bass. >_< Now I use an Ibanez Mikro for shows. Makes me look taller in photographs. :P

Dear god they're all soooo very young here!
I remember seeing this!
Nice seeing them in the early days .. so cute lol
Vicki's lovely even though she's dressed like her mother!
I miss the 80s
Annette is anime level cute
1983 Susanna Hoffs looks like 40 years old
2021 Susanna Hoffs looks like 25 years old
Anette!
hoosieryank1967 She came back! Definitely missed.
hoosieryank1967 So happy she's back!
Love Annette too!❤❤💙
early Bangles! nice....
Kenneth Russo they way it should have been, that's one of reasons why I'm happy Annette Zilinksas rejoined them.
Kenneth Russo the early Bangles were the best, that's when it was about the music.
Why goes Annette of the band??
Vicki is wearing a sweater! First lead guitarist to wear a sweater on stage.
Mahalo for sharing. :-)
Where is the performance that preceded this interview!
m.th-cam.com/video/sQrqfFr9Dss/w-d-xo.html
I like Susanna's short hairstyle.
They made Annette put on another shirt over her THRASHER MAGAZINE shirt!
ERIC F Yeah.
ERIC F I think that was for reasons of advertising.
Hard to believe that is Sussana Hoffs!

Same. I got a pass from my fellow heavy Metal buds for being a Bangles fan because Susanna was so stunning. Everybody was in love with her.
This is before MTV tarted them up.
Joseph B exactly! They were so much better back then. It was more about the music, & less about personality.

Susana with short hair wow
I don't think this is the whole interview.
Adam Sukenick It's not, I remember seeing this episode back in 1983.
It isn't. 😊

Jason Voorhees sadly, that was a precursor to what would happen on their biggest hit "Walk Like An Egyptian".

There is a longer version of this on TH-cam. It ends after Dick Clark says that because all Debbi did was introduce the next song.

Haha, why are they all dressed like they're 45 year old moms?
They look like Mark E. Smith's sisters. Going for a new wave 'Fall look' maybe.
Good grief is that Chris Farley on guitar?
