I found it funny to listen to interviews with him. People assume he was this deep, complicated person. He was laughably stupid and thought he was a rock star. He was pathetic.
Have you seen how they portrayed him in the american horror story 1984? They sexualised him so much and made him seem cool/badass. It was so weird, made me feel sick honestly.

My mom was a child when this occurred. She remembers that her father never had the AC running at night and always kept the windows open. Once Ramirez began his spree, the windows were locked and the air was on. It truly terrified the whole state

Yup. My family lived in SGV. My aunts still remember when my grandparents added bars to their windows and purchased a gun, teaching them how to use it just in case.
I was in 11th grade and it was scary. We were all terrified to even go out on the porch for even a minute at night. It didn’t help one of the murders happened about 5 blocks from where I lived.

I've noticed alot of serial killers love the names the media give them.... Why don't they shame the killers with insulting names instead of giving them names which help them feel infamous, which is what alot of them want. For example, this festering bandaid of a human could've been named Rank breath Ramirez or something similar to insult him personally. Shame serial killers instead of boosting their egos you know?

Personal opinion, I enjoy the true crime podcasts the most.
I agree, I only listen to the True Crime-episodes of this podcast. I don't believe in ghosts, hauntings or exorcisms, and even though I do think there must be some life out there in the universe, I'm not sure if I believe that they're abducting humans and doing weird butt-stuff to them. Surely aliens have better things to do than inspect human anuses?

As for the vomit, I believe he possibly had an empty stomach probably due to his drug use and he was probably so stressed out over being caught that he had to throw up and since his stomach was empty it was probably bile fluid as bile tends to be bright yellow/orange/green.
That's my theory on that little aspect.

Richard had brain injuries as a child to so maybe that fucked up his brain pattern who knows tho ? I was a young girl living in San Leandro, CA and was horrified when I heard about this dude! He targeted older folks which lived in houses on corner lots...terrifying! Glad you guys covered this!
My mom used to be a court clerk and was working in the LA criminal court building when the Night Stalker was on trial. She had to sub in for the usual clerk one day during the trial. She said she made sure not to make eye contact with him, as she was convinced he was possessed by a demon.
Also, another unnecessary fun fact: the judge who presided over the trial held me once when I was a baby 😂

My mom just had my sister when Richard Ramirez was out doing his thing. My grandfather who was named Rouge Ramirez, got a lot of slack because he had a similar name, lived right down the street from one of the victims. We ended up changing our last names to Ruiz became of that.

I lived through that summer of 1985, in the middle of the kill-zone, and suffer PTSD because of Ramirez - if im sleeping alone, I have to leave a hall light on, and am constantly rechecking door locks. Unless you were there, there's no vid, book nor docu, that explains the fear and stress Ramirez put us under.
I must say I found quite stupid that people still weren,t locking their doors or too any precaution. Man, I would have waited for him with a shotgun.

As for the Disneyland reference...back in the 80s and 90s, it was popular for sports heros and other people who just finished doing something amazing to be asked by some news reporter, "Now that you've (insert amazing feat), what are you gonna do next?", and the answer was, "I'M GOING TO DISNEYLAND!"....It wouldn't surprise me if Ramirez was mocking that cheesiness at the time. He said it right after he was handed his sentence and being hauled off to prison, wasn't it? So there you go...that was his amazing feat.
This is crazy, I just did a presentation on TBI (traumatic brain injury) and the development of PTSD on my psych rotation. Here it is again, football player + 2 TBIs as a child for the night stalker.
I remember living in California as a kid, and not being allowed to play outside after sunset cause they hadn't caught him yet. Frightening time.
Imagine if the couple had testified against his assault, and he had been locked up for that..imagine how that might have changed things. Things might have gone differently.

The day he was caught was the happiest day of my childhood and the day he died (down the street from me) was the happiest day of my adult life. It sounds callous but he terrified me and my family.

I remember seeing Richard Ramirez while going to visit my cousin in San Quentin. He was sitting behind one of the glass seating areas and we made eye contact and it was the most disturbing feeling ever. I got chills all over and he would not stop looking at me. Never forget that moment.
@@yourmajesty6940 no actually we were waiting for appt with cousin. Some of the inmates were only allowed visits behind glass and others allowed visits while in cells. My cousin being one if them. So never was near him and his visitor.

I can still remember as a kid, going to GEMCO in Riverside, CA, with my dad. He was looking at hand guns to buy; just in case the "night stalker" came around lol.
He was one creepy dude. I think his exposure to violence early on warped his mind and instead of help he got passed to one POS after another. He didn't have a fighting chance to be good.
I rode as a medic on an ambulance for many years. I can tell you that when most people go into shock, they actually can't move or speak. I believe shock is the reason he got so little resistance from his victims. Just FYI.
I was raised in fear and this could very well be true. I really hope if I have to go out in violence I am Bruce Willis.

Both my parents grew up in East LA and my mom actually told me that the night Ramirez was caught in ELA she swore she saw thought she saw him at a laundry mat and told me she packed up her wet clothes and left but ramirez was in fact being beat up at that very moment. So just proof he had put fear into everyone.
I remember watching something about what they called the “psychopathic” gene. I don’t remember too much but I remember them saying something to the effect of a lot of people who are born with it it becomes a matter of how they were raised and traumatic experiences that most likely will lead to the person, for example, becoming a serial killer.
When they found his ACDC hat, he was called the night stalker, pertaining to their song Night Prowler. It upset the band tremendously because the song is about sneaking into a girlfriend's bedroom when the parents aren't home or asleep.

You know what, Josh? I was going to get all defensive when you started talking about Juárez. I do not live there, but I’m just a couple of hours away. In the same state, Chihuahua. I was going to say how you were demonizing the place but no, no, you’re right. You’re completely right. Living here is /awful/, as a female myself, I’m constantly scared of going outside after dark. Many women are incredibly scared of living in Chihuahua, and the violence has only gotten worse and worse.
I know Richard is just ONE of million of men that have done something horrid to another woman, because for some reason women are constantly killed here. Anyway, it just made me come to the realization about how bad it actually is.

Josh has a lovely voice, could listen to him all night. Really good podcasts, very thorough, well searched and lots of detail in all cases.
The fact that people idolize killers like him to the extent of getting married to them is absolutely asinine. Just that fact alone shows they have something wrong with them because if you can be brainwashed into thinking that someone of his caliber is innocent or in some way human despite the incredibly overwhelming evidence otherwise, you need to get some therapy. It's one thing to find serial killers fascinating, but it's another to find yourself infatuated with them.
It's actually a psychological condition called hybristophilia.

A cemetery in our small town was where my friends and I would go to smoke sometimes. Thinking about that now it was really disrespectful. I can’t believe this is episode 19! It seems like it just started.

Love your show! I believe it was a perfect storm. Head traumas. And being around a toxic environment, being shown pictures at a young age of graphic content....yea perfect recipe for build a killer.
They should do a video on Christopher Dorner! It needs more attention again since 2 LAPD officers have came out and admitted to gangs being in the LAPD ! Plus his manifesto would be interesting to hear them talk about!

I was nodding in and out when I tried to listen to this the first time. I heard Josh talking about Juarez and then I heard him say, "Dressers fall on kids all the time." and I thought he was still speaking specifically about Mexico and it blew my tiny little sleepy mind.
The cementary is is a cool spot when your early teens, don't have to worry about cops if your quiet . I would rather go there to smoke and sleep at night then the woods.

Probably because it got easier to be caught so the fear of being caught made them stop or go into hiding
There are many serial killers still around.
Check out the movie "Behind the Mask: Rise of Leslie Vernon" if you haven't already. It's about a film crew doing a doc on an up & coming serial killer (it's sort of a comedy, obviously😁). It's interesting to watch the killer be charming one minute and go into shark mode the next.
Yeah a serial killer isn't event a thought until there's connections or similarities in the kills so who knows how many smart serial killers are out

Most of these serial killers have a history of abuse as a child and extremely dysfunctional families. Child abuse is the root of all evil, imo. I wonder how he would have turned out if he had stable loving parents?
I truly believe life itself concocted the perfect recipe for a serial killer when it comes to this guy...through environment, events, and the people around him in his crucial years of early development
Cemeteries are actually really peaceful to smoke at. Once you get over the stigma it's really nice
I missed this one when it first came out and am here after watching the Netflix special- I was so disappointed that the Netflix one didn’t talk about his childhood and how he became a murderer so I’m so grateful for this
I think he took advantage of the fact that a heatwave forced people to keep their windows open. It's not that people had great trust in their neighbourhood in 80's. They just didn't have air-conditioners!
