I am curious about this because that’s what we thought about doing to get past the 3 month issue. Just like you said we would use my Google FI phone plan for the first 3 months and pause my husband’s plan, and then reactivate my husband’s after 3 months when my plan shuts down. However, the information on the Google FI site says you have to be in the country to reactivate the service (maybe it is just activating a new service). Was this not a problem for you? We will be out of the country for 6 months so it would be a perfect plan if it works.
@@jimwicker2808yes I reactivated in the USA and it was no issue. I do have a friend that let us know that gFi was going to cancel or did? their phone/SMS a month later. This was just a few days ago. Thank you for this. After going through the comments and your replies, I've seen the clearest explanation of how Google FI works with Airalo when one is concerned about 2FA while abroad. If you don't travel perpetually but are based in the US, several T-Mobile plans offer 5 GB of high speed data per month in, I believe, 160 countries around the world. It's worked seamlessly for us in Mexico, Italy, Greece, Portugal, and the UK.
@@RetirementTravelersI have been traveling continuously in SE Asia for 7 months and have TMobile Magenta Plus. I use Wi-Fi mostly but when I need data, (don’t have Wi-Fi) for example to request a Grab car, I turn off airplane mode and use the TMobile data roaming. I have never used even 1GB in any one country. Once done I turn back to airplane mode. I used to get a local SIM card for my unlocked travel phone but this is much easier.
I’m using Felix from Australia (esim) it’s $20 for 100 minutes and 100 texts and 4gb of data valid for a year. Good for bank authentications etc. When I hit a local country I grab a physical sim and put that in for cheap local data.
I did not realize you had released this video a couple weeks ago! Yesterday Ian assigned me to figure out what to do about our cell phones when we move back to England in a couple weeks! I always hate this decision because it is so messy and complicated!!!
Thank you guys for such an important info. I just joined the retired club and am eager to start traveling ALL over... Not to mention you guys are fun...!
Thanks for this - just finished doing the research for an upcoming trip and came up with the same answer!!! Great confirmation and perfect timing! Thank you!
I fly to individual countries in the tropics for months at a time. I pull my SIM card when I get on the plane before takeoff. And whatever country I land in, I get a SIM card for one of the popular cell companies in whatever country it is. Example? CELL CARD in Cambodia. TRUE Move in Thailand. Works great for me, and costs very very little.
Yes! That 3 month limit is the bummer... last year was the first time we had a problem because we went abroad for four months instead of three. This year we are going for five months... so that's why things this is challenging!

I actually need a video on what the heck a SIM card or eSIM is and what is Google Fi and what is Air-whatever. Dumb it down a bit for us. How does a SIM card work? Does it replace your service, like am I using it instead of Verizon?
Thank you for that feedback. We are doing a new cell phone video in our travel school and we will make sure we walk you through it all. We can see how we missed the boat when we read your note. We’ll try to do better next time. We’ll get to this soon. Thanks for your note! John & Bev
Great video as always. So does Airalo give you a phone number and provide cellular mobile phone service overseas after Google Fi drops you in 90 days? I didn't quite pick up if that was the case. I've been trying to port my number to Google Voice and use a similar global E-Sim but part of the google voice process says to get another number and service plan from your carrier for the first 90 days until your original mobile number can "actually can be used." I don't want another US mobile service plan to pay for. Crazy, any insights I'd appreciate.
It looks like even though we are going over for six months at a time that we should’ve set up Google Fi instead of Google voice. Oh brother😂. Thanks again!
Such a good review. I'm trying to figure out what phone plan to get. I've done research on Mint Moble, Visible, US Mobile, etc. I've never looked into Google Fi, but you two made me want to look into them now.

@@RetirementTravelers Thanks for the quick response! My husband and I, along with our golden retriever, will be moving from Boston to France in September and we were stymied over being able to receive a 2-factor authentication text from our bank. We didn’t know that we could receive text messages via a VPN! Thanks!
Hello and Thank you for the great videos. If your GoogleFi phone number is not working overseas, how do you get your two-factor authentications? Do you transfer all the calls to your new e-sim number?
Does Google Fi give you a new telephone number that you tell your Bank is your contact number etc for confirmation texts, or do you still keep your T Mobile or Verizon etc cell phone number for confirmation texts, and if you do keep your T Mobile etc number how does that work with Google Fi or is Google Fi completely seperate ?
Thank you for another great video. I am planning to travel throughout Europe for one year, and I don't want to lose my US phone number, or keep paying $75 per month to Verizon. Which google Fi plan do you recommend that I get if I plan to get the Global plan with Airalo like you guys have? Thank you.
Thanks. First question is how will you get around Schengen Zone rules for one year in Europe? Google Fi sounds like it would work for you, but perhaps you won't need the unlimited if you are gone an entire year. Also, compare the country and regional plans vs. global on Airalo. They are cheaper. Hope this helps. John and Bev retirementtravelers.com/
Yes, we tried it and have a high quality VPN. The VPN works to block our location on the web, but it doesn't prevent us from pinging into the local cell service. At least that's what we think. We were hopeful that having a VPN was the solution until we realized it wasn't. Thanks for the question! John & Bev
How many GB did you purchase from Airalo. Is it correct, that is what you use now exclusively because of the iphone 14? Does the Airalo work in USA if you still have time on it?
Why should I get AIRALO eSim above Holafly in 2023? And if I pick AIRALO, how do I pick my eSim at its website? By the way, I live in the US and use Verizon, but I will be traveling to Spain for a month; thus, I wonder if Holifly is better choice for me since I'll using a lot of data while in Spain. One more thing, I researched Verizon for an International plan, and I didn't like any plan at all as they were too expensive for a retiree like me. Please, let me know and thank you for your video. 🤔
We don’t have experience with Holifly, but they are similar to Airalo. You’ll download the app and from there, you pick your plan. It’s easy to do. Remember, it’s only data, so you won’t get a phone number. That’s why we like Google Fi. It’s more affordable and even when using our Airalo for data, we can use our Google Fi for phone service and keep our number. John & Bev
Good but how do you handle 2factor verificatioon from US banks that do not send to emaiil or call foreign places. Or use. A tex that is not sms After they started 2tactor. Verification codes I can not get them. 8 YEArs.. 8:05 Out of US as of this year.😊
We keep Google Fi throughout the year, so verification is not a problem. The only problem with Google Fi is they cut off our international DATA plan after about 3 months. That's when we use the Airalo. Hope this helps, John and Bev retirementtravelers.com/
great video thank you very much. you mentioned that you have an iphone 14, how does google fi work with the iphone? wifi calling, texting and general usage? also do you use google fi for talking and texting and airalo for data when you are overseas? thanks for any insight and i look forward to more videos from you guys...
Thanks so much. Google Fi works fine with iPhone 14. You are correct. We use google fi for everything but overseas data, which is where we use Airalo. John and Bev retirementtravelers.com
Nice that airalo is global - however, I just checked the price in Mexico, and it seems it is 2 or 3 times higher per month than a local prepaid sim - but probably easier to buy first time..
It is not the cheapest, but very convenient since our phone can’t take a physical SIM card and we change countries often. John and Bev retirementtravelers.com
Airalo eSIM is DATA only. We still use Google Fi for talk. Our phones are eSIM only and believe Airalo is only eSIM. Hope this helps. Happy trails, John and Bev retirementtravelers.com/
When you use Airalo, you are using it just for roaming data correct? You don't need it for Wi-Fi that usage, right? So once you're 90 days has expired, you could have Wi-Fi data for browsing the internet and Google Fi phone and text while out and about. So we would not need Airalo unless we needed data while out and about away from a Wi-Fi spot, correct?
It’s confusing, so here’s how we do it. While our Goggle Fi works for phone, texting, and data roaming, once our 3.5 months abroad kicks in and we lose our Google Fi, we need data roaming to be able to use a map or search for a restaurant on the fly, away from a local WiFi. We use Airalo at that point for data roaming only. We get to keep our phone number for texting and calls for Google Fi. It continues to work for us. If we didn’t want roaming data and we’re okay with just using local WiFi, we wouldn’t need Airalo. You are correct. We just like having data roaming because we get lost a lot! 🤣😂
Thanks for the video. Have been researching this very topic since we're travelling to multiple countries for the remainder of 2023. In addition to Airalo I also found Dent. Do all carriers allow calls and text to continue after 90 days (just turning off data)?
Thanks for the info. Sorry, we aren't familiar with the other carriers regarding allowing calls and text after 90 days. Good luck and safe travels. John and Bev retirementtravelers.com/
That's why I stuck with the iPhone 13, and made sure I still had a physical Sim card. I wanted to have the flexibility because the eSIM only kinda scares me 😮
Don't let that eSIM scare you. Many options and very easy to manage. We think Airalo is the best one, but there are others. John and Bev retirementtravelers.com/
Just came across your channel with my international plans research.........Hadn't heard of Google Fi or Airalo. We are going to Indonesia for three weeks and wanted to know what would you do with that......I did go and look at your link for Airalo, and almost bought but then was thinking we couldn't get phone calls is that the case is Airalo just for use as a hotspot?
Hi John and Bev. I want to switch to Google Fi but is afraid that Iphone is not fully supported by Google Fi. Do you have any problem using your iphone on Google Fi network? Thanks
Thank you for the cell phone plan for international travel. To use google fi phone service without data, do you set the phone to airplane mode when not in use to receive text messages? Does google fi charge an extra roaming fee in case you leave the phone service on all the time?
Google Fi works fine for us on calls and texts. The only issue is international "data", which gets cut off if you are out of the United States for more than 90 days. No issues using Google Fi without the data. Hope this answers. John and Bev retirementtravelers.com/
Maybe I’m missing this detail but, are you saying that google FI will provide international voice and text for beyond 90 days but not data? So you’ve just combined it with Airlo to replace the international data? I’d assumed that GoogleFI didn’t provide anything beyond 90 days for international and that I’d need to resort to google voice and eSim data to have voice, text and data during long term international travel.
Google Fi provides calls and texts beyond 90 days, and Airalo provides data. Our phones allow both to be active at the same time. Airalo doesn’t allow calls, but you can call over WhatsApp to make a WiFi call. Hope this helps.
I will be in Europe two months at a time, September and October in The Netherlands and Germany, and two months, late March to late May 2024 in France. Would you recommend Google Fi or getting a sim card in each country?
How do you get text messages that do not come through data? Ex. While in Guatemala, I used Airlalo eSim, which was great! But when I got back to the US and turned on cell service I had missed several urgent text messages.
@@RetirementTravelers Can you still receive texts for 2 factor authentication with google Fi on your original number though while using the E-Sim from Airolo?
Which Google-Fi plan are you still on? The $65 a month one? It sounds like they cancelled your international data service twice. But to be clear, even though they cancelled your international data, your phone number still works with texting? Just the data part is shut down (so use Airalo for that?) Or are you now on a cheaper Google-Fi plan. Or are you on the most basic $50/month Google-Fi plan now? It looks like the $50/mo package doesn't include texting or calls, so curious what exactly you are using Google-Fi for internationally in relation to keeping your US number?
We are using the cheaper Google Fi plan now, just enough to keep our phone number. You are correct, we just use Airalo for international data. John and Bev retirementtravelers.com/
Thanks for sharing this video, am I able to use my original US phone number if I use Airalo esim to traveling to Asian counties ? I do have the iphone 14 pro. Thanks again
I have a Samsung s22 Ultra. Unfortunately only 1 esim can be active. I stay in Thailand for 2 months so i get a plan from the local company DTAC while I'm here. I stop on Istanbul to break up the flight. A friend recommended Nomad for an esim in Istanbul. Any experience with them? Also, i have Mint Mobile in the USA. With wifi calling i can make calls and sms for no cost anywhere in the world.
Thanks for sharing your experiences. We have no experience with Nomad. Google Fi and airalo combo is working for us for now. Safe travels, John and Bev retirementtravelers.com/
@@RetirementTravelersi investigated Google Fi and I noticed that there is a $10 charge for each gb of data. That could get expensive quick. Isn’t T Mobile a better option?
I am going to France, Croatia, and Austria for 9 weeks but some side trips to maybe other countries from there. I leave in a couple weeks. I have Verizon and normally use the $10 per day but only when needed. Last year I used a SIM card in Hungary. It was ok but not great. Should I try Google fi or aero plan? What happens when I come back to USA…..do I go back to Verizon? I travel at least one long trip per year…maybe two.
Given that your trip is less than 90 days, Google Fi only would be a good option. Understand that Google Fi would replace your Verizon service for everything. If you didn't want to stop Verizon, you could add an Airalo plan for data usage for the countries you are visiting. Hope this helps. John and Bev retirementtravelers.com/
@@RetirementTravelers with Google Fi, do you keep the same number? And can get calls from USA or make them to USA…..sorry for all the questions. Are either unlimited data?
Yes, you can keep your same number, make calls to and from US, plus a variety of different data plans. We loved Google Fi, it just doesn’t work if you stay out of the US for long periods of time.
We use a US based BCBS coverage because our plan would be to return to the US if anything serious happened. They would reimburse us for out-of-network coverage overseas. We don't use a global policy. John and Bev retirementtravelers.com/
No, Google knows what cell tower network you are connected to and what country you are in. We still use a VPN all the time, but it doesn't help with this situation. Safe journeys, John and Bev retirementtravelers.com/
So do I understand that if I travel between 2 continents, US and EU, I need firstly an esim compatible phone, then Google FI in order to place calls and texts, and Airalo for internet data?
That is correct. You wouldn't need the Airalo for data as long as you never leave the US for longer than 90 days. Google Fi cuts off your data if you stay too long out of US. John and Bev retirementtravelers.com/
@@RetirementTravelers Oh okay, so Google FI suffices for all those needs, as long as you are traveling under 90 days. Got it. Thanks for clarifying. Happy travels to you both...
We still have Google Fi for text and calls. We just use Airalo for international data after Google Fi stops 90 days after leaving the US. John and Bev retirementtravelers.com/
With your new iphone, did you have any issue with your phone being “locked” which prevented you from using the esim? Did you have to fully purchase the new iphone to get it “unlocked”?
That has not worked for us because Google Fi uses the international cell provider. Using a VPN doesn't fool Google into thinking you are in the US. They want to see you ping into a US based cell tower. John and Bev retirementtravelers.com/
Thanks. The concern we’ve had is that you need internet with Google Voice. Still might work and save money, but it is nice having cellular. John and Bev
10 GB would be a great starting point. You always have the option of top up if needed. Amount you need really depends on how much you will have access to wifi. John and Bev retirementtravelers.com/
I'm confused on how to use it. Will I have internet access at a beach or walking from town to town. Or do I need wifi and it's password as like you can get at a hotel?
When using local SIM or data only eSim, what do you do for 2FA? I used airalo as well, but when I tried to log into my bank in EU and it said it is sending me a SMS .. that of course didn't work.. what do you do?
Check your settings on your phone under cellular and make sure you have the right esim. Also, we believe Airalo has a chat feature for help. Good luck. John and Bev retirementtravelers.com/
The biggest question is - How can you possibly afford living in hotels? The typical European hotel costs 150 - 200 dollars per day. Same thing in Asia, unless you want to share a bathroom with the entire floor. That amounts to - 54,750 to 73,000 dollars per year. That's besides eating in restaurants every meal. You must be pretty rich to be able to live like that. I doubt that you stay in hostels - or do you?
This has not been the case for us. There are many wonderful, low cost hotels in Europe and in Asia. Of course, some cities are on the high end, as you state, but we limit our time in them. Thanks for the comment. John & Bev

You are quoting a more or less high end hotel in big tourist cities like Paris, Rome, London, or Zurich. In small towns, even in Switzerland, you can find economical 2 or 3 star hotels. Week or month stays at airbnb are even cheaper, often with a washing machine and kitchens, so you don't need to eat out that much. But to me, eating out is part of the fun.
Great video! Google Fi looked like a good option for international travel, but seeing reports of service being canceled due to use of service not being primarily in the US. From their terms of use: The Services are offered only to residents of the United States. The Services must be primarily used in the United States (territories not included) and are not intended for extended international use. Further, the Services are designed for use predominantly within our network. If your usage outside our network is excessive, abnormally high, or cause us to incur too much cost, we may, at our option and sole discretion, suspend your Google Fi account, terminate your service, or limit your use of roaming. Need to show some level of US service before traveling internationally? Don't want to get shut off while overseas.
Thanks. It is unfortunate, but those are their rules... It is working out ok for us supplementing with Airalo on an as needed basis. Safe travels, John and Bev retirementtravelers.com/
Your US phone might be locked..recently went to UK and put an unlocked Vodafone sim into my AT&T phone. Did not work..AT&T has the phone locked down. Ended up buying a cheap sim free phone.

I actually need a video on what the heck a SIM card or eSIM is and what is Google Fi and what is Air-whatever. Dumb it down a bit for us. How does a SIM card work? Does it replace your service, like am I using it instead of Verizon?

Great video as always. So does Airalo give you a phone number and provide cellular mobile phone service overseas after Google Fi drops you in 90 days? I didn't quite pick up if that was the case. I've been trying to port my number to Google Voice and use a similar global E-Sim but part of the google voice process says to get another number and service plan from your carrier for the first 90 days until your original mobile number can "actually can be used." I don't want another US mobile service plan to pay for. Crazy, any insights I'd appreciate.
Google Fi doesn't drop your number, calls or texts. It only cuts the international data.

We use a VPN. We like ExpressVPN. John & Bev

Have you tried using Google-fi and a vpn that shows you are logging in from a USA city?
Yes, we tried it and have a high quality VPN. The VPN works to block our location on the web, but it doesn't prevent us from pinging into the local cell service. At least that's what we think. We were hopeful that having a VPN was the solution until we realized it wasn't. Thanks for the question! John & Bev
How many GB did you purchase from Airalo. Is it correct, that is what you use now exclusively because of the iphone 14? Does the Airalo work in USA if you still have time on it?
We buy a country or region package from Airalo. GB depends on length of stay. Don’t need in the US, because we have Google FI
John and Bev

Nice that airalo is global - however, I just checked the price in Mexico, and it seems it is 2 or 3 times higher per month than a local prepaid sim - but probably easier to buy first time..

Does Airalo eSIM include unlimited talk in a monthly no contract plan? Or, is that only available with a physical SIM card?
Airalo eSIM is DATA only. We still use Google Fi for talk. Our phones are eSIM only and believe Airalo is only eSIM. Hope this helps.

retirementtravelers.com/

That's why I stuck with the iPhone 13, and made sure I still had a physical Sim card. I wanted to have the flexibility because the eSIM only kinda scares me 😮

John and Bev
retirementtravelers.com/
You are correct. Google Fi only suspended our international data, so we now supplement with Airalo.

Just to clarify you have Google Fi and Airalo?
@@mrsjuliemasse That is correct 👍

Yes, you can keep your same number, make calls to and from US, plus a variety of different data plans. We loved Google Fi, it just doesn’t work if you stay out of the US for long periods of time.

@@RetirementTravelers I am constantly amazed that you were able to get the name retirement travelers. Did it cost a fortune to buy your domain name?
The biggest question is - How can you possibly afford living in hotels? The typical European hotel costs 150 - 200 dollars per day.
Same thing in Asia, unless you want to share a bathroom with the entire floor.
That amounts to - 54,750 to 73,000 dollars per year. That's besides eating in restaurants every meal. You must be pretty rich to be able to live like that.
I doubt that you stay in hostels - or do you?

@@RetirementTravelers Oh. OK. Thanks,
Happy travels.
From their terms of use:
The Services are offered only to residents of the United States.
