As soon as Cardan banished Jude, I went „oh, she’s the queen, she can just pardon herself” and spent the entire 3rd book beyond annoyed when girlie kept sulking and being like „boo hoo that Cardan, why I oughta…” instead of just thinking for a sec. Like he SPECIFICALLY said she had to be pardoned by THE CROWN, not him, not just the king.

In their wedding vows he also says something along the lines of „until the crown passes from OUR hands”, so he acknowledges her as the rightful ruler of the land. A fearie marriage is a bargain so he was bound by it and could not just go „haha sucker you’re not a queen”. He specifically chose the phrasing of her banishment to allow her to pardon herself pretty much immediately. She could have just crossed the border, taken one step, turn around and go „actually, as the rightful queen I pardon myself” and stepped back into Elfhame. And he later confirms that when she comes back disguised as Taryn. He’s literally like „babe, what the hell, why didn’t you just pardon yourself?”.
While she could have pardoned herself she did have a point in that he could just not say anything and she would still be punished anyway because nobody else knows and no one would believe her

I'm so glad I'm not the only one who looks back on this book and feels like the majority of the book was underwater. I definitely remember everything that was recapped, but literally it feels like so much of the book was her captured and tortured underwater.
Holly Black nails it when it comes to creating complex characters, especially her female ones, who usually get sidelined or stereotyped. That's why Taryn gets so much hate, even after making up with Jude. Take Cardan, for example-he did WAY WORSE stuff (mutilating a fairy for one), but everyone forgave him, even when he was a ✨ little menace ✨ . Women are often portrayed as flawless, so when they're not, it's tougher for them to win back the audience's trust. It took me a little time when reading the books but I am a big Taryn stan ❤ We love development and growth!

My issue with Taryn is she never picked Jude despite them both growing in the same environment but Jude always prioritized her. Taryn chose Locke who humiliated Jude in the first book and then she chose Madoc, the man who killed their parents, in the second book. Cardan was terrible but he wasn't Jude's family. Taryn was her twin and despite Jude having homage to her and other humans, she took advantage of Jude's loyalty. Another issue being from Jude's perspective and seeing her having undying loyalty to her family despite how they treat her. A good message in the series could've been that even if ur tied down to people by blood, that doesn't mean u should always care for them, but the author never went that route. I guess I was more frustrated with Jude than Taryn? Idk.

It made no sense to me considering how vengeful she was to people who wronged her. I thought it would’ve been pretty cool if Jude didn’t forgive her because it would set a really good message that you don’t need to always forgive someone just because they’re family. You've just convinced me not to consume media on this book, no offense to anyone except the author and taryn, she's truly unbearable. Yes! And when Jude forgave her despite everyhing, I was hoping that AT THE VERY LEAST she had finally earned Taryn's undying loyalty. I kept expecting a Taryn redemption arc like: "ok I was selfish before but by forgiving my betrayal after all that I have done to her, my sister proved to me that she was good, and I now devote myself to helping her", or something... I kept waiting for a big moment when Taryn would take arms against the villains (like, go against her own nature because she understands that's what Jude needs her to do, right now) but it never really came (sure she's on Jude's side but we get the feeling it's only because her interests are alligned at the moment, and no other reason) and that's why her character is just a big ball of MEH for me :/

i just want to let you know that your first video about the cruel prince actually prompted me to read the actual book and I've now finished the og trilogy! no other plot recap did that for me so i appreciate you and your storytelling for helping nudge me out of my 6-year long reading slump
the point about the undersea being so short in terms of book percent but soooo long in terms of impact is SO REAL everytime i reread it its so impactful and i can never figure out where i am in the story bc it doesnt line up in my head
Cardan's character development sends me through the roof, I cannot. I literally cannot. He thought he was a spy and at the end him creating the new island has so much significance to his character as it shows how he finally became very much the High King of Elfhame, it was just so masterfully executed by Holly Black because you see how this cruel boy who never felt loved finally finds out who he is and how the power in his hands can make him something he never thought he could be (like he never knew power was something he wanted) after everyone in the court constantly underestimated him including his own family, it's a very powerful moment. I hate how he is sterotyped as a babygirl and how everyone on booktok sees him as inferior to Jude and made that his whole personality when he is just as much cunning and manipulative as Jude and is very good at being King. I cannot and will never get over this series and how beautifully written it is, to the point that you can psycoanalyse every character and their complex motives and desires! IT MAKES ME WANT TO SCREAM IN MY PILLOW.

Taryn as a character makes me so uncomfortable, because I could absolutely see myself making some of her bad choices if I were in her position 😭😭 the only thing I can’t forgive her for or understand is how she betrayed her sister in book one. I get she was trying to make her place in Elfhame, but still, I think she went way too far.
Girl I love the organization, not only are you a great story teller but it’s so nice there’s visual ques everywhere. Especially the timeline that’ll reveal a major plot line, it’s giving me a treat to look forward especially with my ADHD. Your little miss brain jar is a nice touch to represent Jude’s anxiety and brain explosion. As the audience we have to be reminded of our protagonist’s trauma.

I was burned bad by tiktok (back when I had it) about this series. I went into it under the impression that it was strictly romance and was so disappointed that I dnf’d the first one- that was two years ago. I just finished TCP recap and Needless to say these videos are making me want to crack open the books and give them a second shot! I might be able to appreciate the things that annoyed me when I thought the series was just romance. Keep up the good work, I can’t wait for TQON recap!!!

the point about the undersea being so short in terms of book percent but soooo long in terms of impact is SO REAL everytime i reread it its so impactful and i can never figure out where i am in the story bc it doesnt line up in my head
Cardan's character development sends me through the roof, I cannot. I literally cannot. He thought he was a spy and at the end him creating the new island has so much significance to his character as it shows how he finally became very much the High King of Elfhame, it was just so masterfully executed by Holly Black because you see how this cruel boy who never felt loved finally finds out who he is and how the power in his hands can make him something he never thought he could be (like he never knew power was something he wanted) after everyone in the court constantly underestimated him including his own family, it's a very powerful moment. I hate how he is sterotyped as a babygirl and how everyone on booktok sees him as inferior to Jude and made that his whole personality when he is just as much cunning and manipulative as Jude and is very good at being King. I cannot and will never get over this series and how beautifully written it is, to the point that you can psycoanalyse every character and their complex motives and desires! IT MAKES ME WANT TO SCREAM IN MY PILLOW.

Taryn as a character makes me so uncomfortable, because I could absolutely see myself making some of her bad choices if I were in her position 😭😭 the only thing I can’t forgive her for or understand is how she betrayed her sister in book one. I get she was trying to make her place in Elfhame, but still, I think she went way too far.

Girl I love the organization, not only are you a great story teller but it’s so nice there’s visual ques everywhere. Especially the timeline that’ll reveal a major plot line, it’s giving me a treat to look forward especially with my ADHD. Your little miss brain jar is a nice touch to represent Jude’s anxiety and brain explosion. As the audience we have to be reminded of our protagonist’s trauma.

I went into it under the impression that it was strictly romance and was so disappointed that I dnf’d the first one- that was two years ago. I just finished TCP recap and Needless to say these videos are making me want to crack open the books and give them a second shot! I might be able to appreciate the things that annoyed me when I thought the series was just romance. Keep up the good work, I can’t wait for TQON recap!!!

Your recap of the story is super good and engaging, it kept listening to a long plot from getting boring. I can tell how invested you in to the story. It gets me invested too from the contagious energy. Also the pictures used for the characters are super great too.
