When I started listening to it this evening I thought "ah, I hear a bit of a Dylan guitar and vocal influence there" which would make total sense. I just really LOVE this song and this particular performance. Mike plays guitar so beautifully on it. They all do a fantastic job. Once again, I tip my hat to them all and can't wait to see them in less than a week!

I wonder if when their house burned down.. that Tom's desire to keep touring and touring.. was his way of dealing with that/ Sometimes we feel like we can bury ourselves into something, be it work, or a hobby or whatever, to try to get away from something very bad.
I got that too. He was separated from his first wife at the time but this song was written much later, and as I understand it, briefly reunited with her for a while. I think he never stopped trying to understand that part of his life: he was definitely working on forgiveness on many counts. "If I lose you in the smoke" does sound like a reference to the arson episode. A great man.
