GRBLshield CNC Milling Machine Conversion

  • Milling machine CNC conversion built around an GRBLshield from Synthetos.com. The GRBLshield is an Arduino shield that can drive three bipolar stepper motors up to 2.5 amps per phase, and contains an open source G-code interpreter called GRBL.
    Stream G-code over USB to the GRBLshield, and you're in business.

    Great work my friend. Not only were you complete in your explanation of what it was you were showing your viewer but you coding and approach was very easy to follow and clean. Thank you for sharing.

    Nice work mate. Have you found any drawbacks from using the grblshield? such as no backlash compensation? Also, did you have to set the steps per mm/inch? and how did you find setting up the part and zeroing the XYZ axis? is it an easy process?

  • @tannersword1
    @tannersword1 10 ปีที่แล้ว

    I'm in the process of a CNC conversion and I'm just using L297/L298 motor drivers...I had no idea that grblShield existed. What inputs are used on that shield? Is there a serial interface on the grbl, or does it just use the standard enable, dir, full/half, dir,step, etc...? If I could use that grblShield without many drastic changes to my circuit, that would be awesome. Cool video as well, by the way.

    very nice, did you develop the CAM to G-code python by yourself>?

  • @BlackandChrome
    @BlackandChrome 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    Does your python script handle tool offset as well? Any reason why you can't use a commercial option such as Cut2D or Vcarve for your CAM portion? Also how streamline was your conversion in the programming department? I have been looking to drive a homemade plotter from printer parts that I will later convert to a full size router with the same drivers but I am not currently very experienced with arduinos. Especially with many options like, RAMPS Pololu, Sparkfun EasyDrivers, Sanguinololu etc...

      both harbour freight and grizzly tools sell this machine. check out their web sites. its not quite a full size machine. it has about a 10 inch z travel but the head can be moved up and down to accommodate different projects. its quill bearings arn't made for long durration hard use (gets hot after an hour or so) but overall its a wonderfull machine I have done some really heavy and cool stuff with mine. expect to change the acme screws for ball screws. the ways are ROCK SOLID. I really love the way he mounted the motors. I want to know how he did the z access and if he has any cad files for the conversion parts. I'll have to mill them on the same machine as I install them on.

    I noticed you were using a mac. Is there any other "user friendly" software out there for Mac. What you showed was pretty involved to say the least. I have been looking into getting a windows machine so I can run "easier" software. Is there anything out there for Mac that would be similar to running mach 3, cambam, or using sketchup for the drawing software. Thanks.

  • @AllenJeter20

    Very cool video, and what you did is very cool. I do have to wonder though wouldn't it be cheaper and easier to get a cheapo CNC kit from ebay (~200) for steppers, power supply and BOB, a copy of heeks cam (free), and a copy of CNC linux (also free). Did you do it this way just to learn how to do it from scratch?

Mainly, my question is : What parts can you make at home to earn money thanks to CNC machining (While having for example a CNC converted 2 axis Lathe and a CNC converted 3 or 4 axis Milling Machine) ? I'm just beginning and I was curious if ever my hobby can bring me some income ;). Kind Regards !
