  • Concept Caravans thought it would be a great idea to show customers exactly how a caravan is manufactured. The end result is this time lapse video shot by James Manson from CDMedia that magically turns 5 days of hard work into 5 minutes.

There's a website from an Australian caravan repairer who shows a lot (an I mean A LOT) of Australian built vans (including the big names in Australian caravan manufacturers) that have extensive wood rot set in before they're even 5 years old. How are "Australian conditions" any different to roads, weather and humidity in say Spain, Greece, or Serbia (where there are crap roads).
How many Aussie caravans are built to AS9001?

Unfortunately none of you negative commenter’s have any building experience or common sense. Steel is very heavy. Most vans on the road are only just compliant with legislation for towing capacities. A lot of vehicle can’t tow vans now because they are too heavy. Aluminium is weak and oxidizers with sweat when you screw sheeting straight to it.

This seems to be a very old type of construction. Most British caravans are built to a much high spec. Fully bonded sides and roof and floor. The last time I had a caravan with the sides built with a wooden frame was back in the 1970's. My last Caravan was fully bonded sides and are much lighter and stronger.

European design and build quality is years ahead of Australian ones (and not over-priced). Looking forward to seeing European caravans adapted for Australia (which is being done now). Timber, a bit of broken styrofoam here and there (they call that insulation!) and someone's old garden shed for the side walls. Oh, and did I mention overpriced?

Couldn't agree more. To give the caravan a nice look the roof lining overhang is trimmed off and a nice corner edge is applied. You now rely 100% on silicone or caulking to protect your investment under this corner. That overhang could have been bent over the wall to flash the van so no water ever got in from the roof. What a joke.

would be to heavy for a average car. and don't say that this way of building is crap,
because i'm from holland europe, and in germany they have Tabbert caravans, and we call them the mercedes
of caravans because they last easely 30 up to 40 years, so no crappo.
Look at the latest Tabbert with a slide out. they are stunningly beautyfull, because the interior

Maybe rename this video "how caravans are made by amateurs". Seriously guys, remove this video before you embarrass Australians in the global caravan building industry. "Made for Australian conditions"?? What, you think they don't have beaches, gravel roads and hot dry areas in parts of Europe?
Love the bits of Styrofoam offcuts that you probably call "insulation"! BTW, you missed "insulating" the front. Shudder to think the build quality (and the ridiculous price).

3/4 inch ridged insulation on the sides, maybe 2 inches on top, none elsewhere - lots of gaps, side skins installed top down instead of bottom up (potential for lots of leaks). I know that they must be kept light weight, so you wouldn't need a MAC truck to pull, and usually, they are only to last 10-15 years on average.

@@stevojanceski because most caravans are so overpriced its easy to be profitable. you could buy a luxury car for the price you pay for these shells
