Wow, that is a heartfelt speech. My younger brother who went to Carolina was on his death bed 2017 while Carolina with Coach Williams at the helm was playing and defeating Gonzaga in the NCAA Finals. He died the next day.
will always love roy, never had hate for leaving for unc....was his job. unc effed up by not getting him right after dean, but roy wanted to stay with kirk and nick. after that, can not fault him for leaving and i am thankful that he has gotten his championships. wish they were with KU but all the same he deserved some titles...of course as a KU fan I will say 3 is enough, lol
He's got catch to catch Mike Krzyzewski in title wins or get so close to equaling them that there's hardly difference. As far as Roy's concerned it would only be a further enhancement of Dean Smith's legacy I truly believe because it was of all ACC coaches Dean beat Krzyzewski the most maybe even having his eye for the game teaching him some things along the way. I'd say what he learned was to get the most out of the talent he had. Think about it Duke has only had a few celebrated athletes whereas Carolina has had a bevy of them and even before Dean could win without spectacular athletic prowess in the time before recruiting black players the likes of Charlie Scott and afterward with players the caliber of Phil Ford, Worthy, Perkins, Jordan not to mention white players like Bobby Jones, Mitch Kupchak, Bill Bunting, Tommy LaGarde. Dean beat Coach K like a drum most often in the beginning of his career and has an overall better won lost record against him. I really think the most essential ambition of Roy Williams life is enshrining in the minds of most basketball observers that Dean Smith despite only winning two NCAA titles was still all things being considered the greatest basketball coach in the history of the sport. He is that much of a disciple to Dean Smith, which I wholeheartedly support. Dean was his mentor after all and the catalyst for his notable career in the sport of basketball.
There aren't many HOF level coaches that are more humble than Roy Williams.
