I gotta watch this at least once a day, this and the granny song. I love watching this guy, and everything he does, be it, acting, stand up.....etc. A real renaissance man.
Billy originally started his entertainment career as a folk musician playing in the pubs of Glasgow telling a few jokes between sets. But the the jokes started getting longer than the sets he was playing!
I remember my father telling me this fact about the big yin, when I was a kid (give or take 10 yr old). I remember one weekend morning, he put on an old tape of “big banana feet” from that moment, I realised as a working class kid from a council estate in south London, we have something worth far more than money, something that carried me across the world…British humour.
Whatched this over and again while mourning my mother who was raised about 10 miles down river near New river gorge. Connolly shows the roots of mountain music and how it fits hand in hand with the old country.seamlessly.thanks billy.
mattte, obviously drawn so much inspiration from this man over the years as a 26 year old Scottish man, but I've been grinding hard on the clawhammer banjo and now I get to appreciate and discover Billy all over again
The Humblebums- Billy, and Tam Harvey released one album "First Collection of Merry Melodies" in Feb 69 Billy and Tam parted company, then Gerry Rafferty joined Billy and released another two albums "The New Humblebums" Sept 69, followed by "Open Up The Door" June 70. Gerry Rafferty formed his own group "Stealers Wheel" in '72 which was responsible for the hits "Baker Street" and "Stuck in the Middle with You"
Brilliant banjo playing. I wonder if Billy has ever strummed the banjo with the actor Steve Martin. The banjo was originally an African musical instrument carved out of a gourd with two strings. The stringed gourd made its way to America during the slave trades and was refined into the banjo by the mountain people of Appalacia.
I wish he'd pop a bit more of this in his stand-up shows. Don't get me wrong, his stand-up is still top notch but it cuts that we're missing out on this extra aspect of the man's talent.
Billy can hold a tune too!! Not the best voice in the world, but certainly suits this kind of music... I think it's awesome!! I'd be absolutely chuffed if i could play my guitar half as well as he plays the banjo... And this isn't even his bread winning talent!! Hats off to you Mr Connolly!!!
If you describe BILLY as a comedian he immediately changes into a musician - if you say he's a musician - he changes into an actor - if you say OK so he's an actor - he changes back into what he really is....a human being like the rest of us - but GREAT!
fantastic version, when it starts im like "thats not the cripple creek I know" anyway good on the big yin, must be cool to have a bit of fun, play music, make people laugh and get paid for it :)
One wee error....Baker Street was well after Stealers Wheel, Rafferty had a contractual dispute with his record company from 1973 to 1978 on a matter of principle, basically slavery & theft of artistic copyright. He refused to make any more recordings for them but was prohibited from recording for anyone else. Baker Street was in 1978 after the contract terminated.
I was checking around, peirol, and apparently, this song dates back to at least 1921. I see it listed as "traditional", meaning that nobody really knows who wrote it. :)
I grew up surrounded by bluegrass traditionals, and can honestly say I've never heard Cripple Creek done like this, lol. Feels a little dirty that I like it (wink).
Ooooh, ai, la- di- da, who cares if he didn't sing with his Scottish accent this one time? Have you ever heard him sing anything else? I have, his accent stays, just sit down and applaud how well he plays the banjo, for Christ's sake.
it,s auld hat noo bit billy wis quite a good banjo player then affishonados always disagre. sit onit. billy cant stop pleasing .he bums for aliving and yes he is in his way humble.hail! hail!.
strings are strings, you get used to it, the clawhammer style of the banjo was what I had a hard time picking up. if you can play one stinged instrument, you can play them all with a little practice, doesn't mean you'll be great but you can get good.
This is one of the best versions of Cripple Creek on TH-cam.
This is the best version of ANYTHING on TH-cam. Or indeed anywhere
@@Motty1066 Do shut up.
Better than what Nashville produces today and I'm from there!!!
I gotta watch this at least once a day, this and the granny song. I love watching this guy, and everything he does, be it, acting, stand up.....etc. A real renaissance man.
the world needs more Billy "the banjo" Connolly type folk
Billy originally started his entertainment career as a folk musician playing in the pubs of Glasgow telling a few jokes between sets. But the the jokes started getting longer than the sets he was playing!
Him and Gerry Rafferty have a few great bluegrass(ish) albums together

He played around Scotland as a folk singer, not just Glasgow. Then around the country as part of the Humblebums.

This is my favorite version of Cripple Creek.

my grandfather play's banjo... i was soooo young at that moment..
nice choice of instrument!
I wish he'd pop a bit more of this in his stand-up shows. Don't get me wrong, his stand-up is still top notch but it cuts that we're missing out on this extra aspect of the man's talent.
This is so amazing to witness on screen and listen too. Watching Billy play like that. Best piece of banjo music I have ever heard 🎼🎼
Then you need to listen to more banjo music by better players, such as Pete Seeger.

Best version of cripple creek I’ve found in terms of energy and vocals. Easy to find instrumentals hard to find people singing it!
Got to see this guy live AWESOME.
Billy Connolly plays and sings this better than anybody.......
That is probably the best banjo playing I've ever heard :D Billy is full of surprises.

I grew up surrounded by bluegrass traditionals, and can honestly say I've never heard Cripple Creek done like this, lol. Feels a little dirty that I like it (wink).
Love the fact that he doesn't use picks....I just cant get on with them.
I tried doing banjo 20 years ago. It is a brutal Mistress. I am looking into a getting a Mandolin now. Its a shorter fretboard.
Had no idea he did frail the banjo too! He is a good picker too btw! :)
Its how he started in comedy :)
He found out he was better at making people laugh in between the songs..
He used to play with gerry rafferty
My, that was good!
this video actually made me buy a banjo and learn how to play it.
Is that sad or what?
I think it's cool. Hope you're enjoying it😊
That’s wonderful! It’s now 12 years later… how’s it going?
Me to when I was 13. I’m 40 now.
lol he spoke about this in his show how he played 'cripple creek' the disabled people by coincidence!
This is part of the musical spectacular at the end of his bites your bum video. The Big Yin at his best.
i need to get me a banjo
Ooooh, ai, la- di- da, who cares if he didn't sing with his Scottish accent this one time? Have you ever heard him sing anything else? I have, his accent stays, just sit down and applaud how well he plays the banjo, for Christ's sake.
jasper carrot did the same when he was in a folk band and ended up a comedian

Anyone know where you can find a stage version of Murial's wedding?
I'll go with that.........
ye har !
woehaaaa Awesome !!!!
I'd love to see Billy and Steve Martin duelling banjoes
T-4 and I approve this.
tight
Fecking brilliant! :-)
Yeah, they were called The Humblebums
does anyone know who does this song originally...i know this is not the same as 'the band' 'up on cripple creek' any clues?
Its a 'traditional' . There is no original
" best hoe down tune ever written"
Funny I can hear his accent. It's a bit light but its there. Listen to a Southerner sing the song and you'll notice the difference.
my band cover this!
and CLAWHAMMER for crying out loud!!! oh my goodness! better get to work! what the heck???!!! Wow!
He didn't write it. My GGF did about my GGM from Cripple Creek. He is also know no as the Cripple Creek kid.
strings are strings, you get used to it, the clawhammer style of the banjo was what I had a hard time picking up.
if you can play one stinged instrument, you can play them all with a little practice, doesn't mean you'll be great but you can get good.
