And now people advocating for undermining teaching and freedom of thought, and advocating for book burning.
There seem to be a pattern and there seem to be large groups of people who are more than willing to ignore it. We've seen that before in Spain and Germany. Will we ever learn to overcome it, or will we just allow it again?

"Fear of Difference", which fascism seeks to exploit and exacerbate, often in the form of racism or an appeal against foreigners and immigrants.
"Appeal to a Frustrated Middle Class", fearing economic pressure from the demands and aspirations of lower social groups.
"Obsession with a Plot" and the hyping-up of an enemy threat. This often combines an appeal to xenophobia with a fear of disloyalty and sabotage from marginalized groups living within the society (such as the German elite's 'fear' of the 1930s Jewish populace's businesses and well-doings; see also antisemitism). Eco also cites Pat Robertson's book The New World Order as a prominent example of a plot obsession.
Fascist societies rhetorically cast their enemies as "at the same time too strong and too weak." On the one hand, fascists play up the power of certain disfavored elites to encourage in their followers a sense of grievance and humiliation. On the other hand, fascist leaders point to the decadence of those elites as proof of their ultimate feebleness in the face of an overwhelming popular will.
"Pacifism is Trafficking with the Enemy" because "Life is Permanent Warfare" - there must always be an enemy to fight. Both fascist Germany under Hitler and Italy under Mussolini worked first to organize and clean up their respective countries and then build the war machines that they later intended to and did use, despite Germany being under restrictions of the Versailles treaty to not build a military force. This principle leads to a fundamental contradiction within fascism: the incompatibility of ultimate triumph with perpetual war.
"Contempt for the Weak", which is uncomfortably married to a chauvinistic popular elitism, in which every member of society is superior to outsiders by virtue of belonging to the in-group. Eco sees in these attitudes the root of a deep tension in the fundamentally hierarchical structure of fascist polities, as they encourage leaders to despise their underlings, up to the ultimate Leader who holds the whole country in contempt for having allowed him to overtake it by force.
"Everybody is Educated to Become a Hero", which leads to the embrace of a cult of death. As Eco observes, "[t]he Ur-Fascist hero is impatient to die. In his impatience, he more frequently sends other people to death."
"Machismo", which sublimates the difficult work of permanent war and heroism into the sexual sphere. Fascists thus hold "both disdain for women and intolerance and condemnation of nonstandard sexual habits, from chastity to homosexuality."
"Selective Populism" - The People, conceived monolithically, have a Common Will, distinct from and superior to the viewpoint of any individual. As no mass of people can ever be truly unanimous, the Leader holds himself out as the interpreter of the popular will (though truly he dictates it). Fascists use this concept to delegitimize democratic institutions they accuse of "no longer represent[ing] the Voice of the People."
"Newspeak" - Fascism employs and promotes an impoverished vocabulary in order to limit critical reasoning.

I read Kite Runner in high school when I was probably 15 with the rest of my class. Not sure if anyone is familiar but there is sexual violence, pedophilia, and a suicide attempt in the book. It’s a very dark book but an important one. Books are at their best and most useful when they challenge our ways of thinking and force us to feel.
It's funny that she said the job of a teacher is to teach children to think critically and that it doesn't take away from parents' power. The root of the entire issue is that certain parents oppose critical thinking. They want their children to only believe what their religious book says is true.
I saw another video that parents are going after the mental health counselors as well. GEE, I WONDER WHY, wouldn't want your kid to rat you out as the cause of their depression and anxiety or violent mindset!!!

I think it's not even the book, it's what the clergy is telling them. You can read the bible to justify literally anything; there are so many contradictory passages that things such as slavery have been both defended and opposed by religious groups, based on the same book.

It'd be much harder, because thousands of books can be stored on a single hard drive/flash drive, uploaded, etc., but the internet itself could be (and is) banned in certain areas, and even worldwide if authoritarianism takes over most or all major countries.
You'd have groups of resistance techies trying to keep a free (very limited) internet going (as they are in certain areas now), with free media (news, videos, books, etc), but authoritarian regimes would be stamping out those sites as they popped up (as they do now). Also, news would come from underground outfits as all major media outlets would be banned/shut down.
The widespread free sharing, much less very existence, of information is not inevitable. For millennia the average person couldn't read, or couldn't read the language the printed word mostly was produced in. Only the educated/wealthy elites had access to important knowledge. There is no reason that technology can conquer the tendency of humankind to repress information. It makes it more difficult (the printing press made the widespread availability, and affordability, of the written word much more accessible to the average person for instance), but hardly impossible. Don't assume anything is inevitable.

I'm a german and watch this in shock. I was born very long after the 3. Reich, which not all of my grandparents and their families survived. My grandfather was in a camp for being a proud socialist. They taught me so much about fascism and the Nazi ideology and one of these things are, that it starts with small "things"
And as time goes by, more and more actions are taken, policies inacted, changes made in society. In the beginning all these are coming across as rather small things and get not that much and closer attention. And at one point, it is too late to turn back.

I left the US in 2016 and am in the process of renouncing my citizenship. I feel like one of the Germans who left their country in the 1930s.
Looking at the United States as an outsider, I think the greatest myth that had been perpetuated to your own people since independence is that you are a free and democratic country.
We are so "free" that over half of the adult population has been in jail at one time or other over fines, and a plant.

I know the books they are talking about cause I bought the entire set from that author, it helped me so much even as an adult and helped me see a future despite the horrible childhood I had. Ignorance about the past doesn’t help anyone and pretending these things aren’t going on in our societies just keeps us stuck and repeating the past over and over again! It’ll be kids that will be missing out horribly and building a whole future of hateful people. This is gross and disgusting and I’m so thankful I’m not American!

I am 70 . I have seen book banning to. My parents , aunts and uncles said " read." Discuss what you read with us. If we like it too , we will tell why. If we don't like it , we will tell you why. You will learn how to think more critically that way. I am still learning to gather information , discuss with others , and ask the questions who what where and why. And don't forget how.

When I was in Jr. High and High School I read a lot of books that were well above my age level, some with explicit material. My parents were just glad I was an active reader. Let kids read what they want. If you have concerns, talk with them about it. Don't clamp down on them.

School Board meetings are usually incharge for an County full of Schools. On average there are at least 5 to 10 Schools in 1 County that the School is incharge of...how many students go to 1 school maybe 300. 1 School Board with about 5 to 10 Schools in its district with about 300 students in each...has to give in to the demands of a small amount of parents who do not represent the Majority of the Student's from all School's in 1 district?
