How the Nazis first burned books and then people

  • Book burnings - in the past and the present - stand as one of the most powerful symbols of intolerance and censorship. On May 10, 1933, only a few months after Hitler's rise to power, tens of thousands of books were burned in more than twenty German cities. Most books were works by Jewish authors. But works by political dissidents were also blacklisted. Numerous writers were forced to go into exile, while many of those who stayed in Germany were imprisoned or murdered. The Nazis replaced the Weimar Republic’s once vibrant culture with Nazi propaganda and a carefully tailored concept of what they wanted “German culture” to be.
In this episode of "Arts Unveiled", DW History Reporter Susanne Spröer sets forth to investigate why the idea to burn books took hold of universities across Germany in 1933. What role did the symbolism of fire play? Which authors were blacklisted? What happened to them afterwards? And what do young people today think about these acts of cultural destruction?
    00:00 Introduction
03:17 Whose books did the Nazis burn? And why?
10:51 Who came up with the book burnings?
17:38 What books and what art were allowed?
20:10 Are book burnings a dark chapter of the past?

Why on earth would anyone want to burn the entire library of Magnus Hirschfeld's Institut für Sexualwissenschaft, and why does that incident always get downplayed when denouncing the Nazi book burnings? Surely the lost volumes there were among the proudest achievements of the unique Weimar cultural moment, with a high degree of relevence to the contemporary 21st century cultural hegemon.

The Maya culture, over two millennia old, with the most elaborate writing system of Mesoamerica, was one of the most impressive civilisations of the New World. Franciscan friars were missioned to convert Yucatan. In 1562, one of them, Diego de Landa, announced the beginning of an inquisition, the first of its kind in the New World.
De Landa was brutal in his methods. He tortured countless Mayan people; hanging them from their necks as a form of interrogation, and in the midst of it all he built a great bonfire in the center of one of the last Mayan cities. He gathered together all of the ancient books he could find, centuries of accumulated knowledge, writings on the history of the Mayan people, their study of mathematics, astronomy, poetry, and literature, and de Landa threw these into the fire and watched as they burned. He later wrote about this event in his memoirs.
“We found a great number of books containing these letters and as they contained but superstition and the lies of the devil, we burned them all which dismayed and distressed these people greatly.”
Only three Maya books are known to have survived this act.

Perhaps, you should also study more to ENLIGHTEN yourself. Also, Blacks in America are more often robbed than the perpetrators of robbery. And one reason why I DO encourage Blacks to read, and why right wing censors ban books to prevent such reading, is that reading can better enable Blacks to understand how the systemic robbery happens, and thereby become better able to defend themselves. As Frederick Douglass, Richard Wright, Malcolm X and others have discovered, reading can be LIBERATING. That is why Nazi tyrants censored what people could read. The fear of such liberation was why slaveholders once forbade teaching a black child to read. And it is why current far right loons are passing laws to censor books in schools, universities and even libraries. If they have their way America would become a fascist state. In line with my previous paragraph on the subject, when it came to his anti Jewish policies Hitler would rarely give a direct order. Instead, he would give suggestions, in order to preserve plausible deniability, which were termed Fuhrer's wishes. As a consequence of these wishes, Hitler's followers would stumble over each other to gain his favour. In the jungle of the Nazi hierarchy, evil was incentivized. Gaining the Fuhrer's ear was key to career advancement. In the case of the Holocaust, it was this type of competition that made it particularly sinister.

Then, people complain about books that for example discuss violence against gay people, and the book gets banned for containing pornography and grooming children. Because obviously a 12 or 16 year old kid will read about gay people and suddenly uncontrollable urges to have sex with 80 year olds of their own gender.
They cloak it in nice terms, like protecting children from pornography, violence, emotionally distressing subjects, pedosexuality, etc.
But other books that get banned included stuff like 1984, by Orwell.
Funnily enough, most of the supporters are extremely Christian, and in at least 1 case a protestor used the same laws to get the Bible removed from library’s. Because that book also contains references to sex and violence and genocide. But for some reason, the big supporters of this push were not okay with the Bible being removed

The fact that the book burning was a product of the Nazi student union illustrates the terrible dynamics of Nazism. Unlike the Soviet Union were everything was top down, in Nazi Germany there was scope for individual initiative which would have been unthinkable under Stalin. One of the most awful examples of this phenomena can be seen in the adoption of Zyklon B as one of the main killing agents in genocide of Europe's Jews. Far from being directed from on high, the decision to employ Zyklon B as a killing agent was the product of the initiative of one man. That particular individual, SS Captain Karl Fritsch, carried out gassing experiments using Russian prisoners of war at Auschwitz's notorious Block 11 in the early autumn of 1941. His motive in carrying out these horrific experiments was to curry favour with his superiors, which would go a long way to advance his career if successful. In essence, this top down and bottom up decision making process enabled tens of thousands of functionaries to work towards their leader. During the time of the Third Reich, individuals and institutions would often compete with each other to see who could come up with the most radical racial policies. As far as Hitler was concerned, especially after war began, the more radical the policy was the better it was in his eyes.

@@iwanterniwsky9441 What you said about Communist students is true. But once the Soviet state became an established fact, Lenin and his those who followed in his footsteps squashed all forms of dissent within the Party in the name of promoting Party orthodoxy. Lenin was suspicious of anything that challenged his worldview. He looked upon any ideas that conflicted with his own as a personal attack on his character and his leadership. In this respect, his character bears a strong resemblance to Marx. In the case of both men, those who questioned their views were looked upon as enemies, rather than debaters. Taking these facts in mind, it is no wonder that the regime established by Lenin became increasingly rigid in its interpretation of Part doctrine. Until it reached the point under Stalin where any deviation from the Party line would be punished by expulsion and death. That is why there was no scope for initiative in the Soviet Union. To challenge the supremacy of the Party, even on the most minor points, was to commit an irredeemable sin.
