Actually, this did not start as an attempt to imitate anything. It started by me singing and playing at the same time, then altering the vowel to change the sound. Simply playing around. By the time I discovered this I had never tried a didgeridoo and not heard of circular breathing. The tune itself does not need this, it has natural phrase lengths to allow breathing. Later on, after learning to play the didge, I understood the similarities.
Øystein Baadsvik I’m a tuba player from south Louisiana over in America I love your work and would be ecstatic if you decide to do something with Nicholls State University
It really sounds like a Mongolian song to me.
Is this possible to play on euphonium?
@@papajosh9754 yes
@@papajosh9754 Possible on almost any instrument including woodwinds.
This video is 17 years old and it's still amazing to listen to!
Never forget, Katou-chan; the tuba isn't just a support. You can be the main character.
People always forget us tubas

I had the pleasure of playing with this guy once... IT WAS AWSOME :D!! the atmosphere to be in the same room as him and about 150 brass musicians was really awsome! Because i play tuba I sat in the front section.. and it was right in front of him as he was conducting us through the different pices of music we played. When we vent from the place everyone was like "Holy shit that was incredible :D!".
// A swedish tuba player with a 8y experience that knows this is good ^_^!
Øystein Baadsvi is the best ranked tuba player in world now, and with this video he shows that. I have been on 4 live concerts with him, and I have had lessons with him twice, he is just fantastic! He showed me some fabolous tecnics with his tuba, very helpfully. I have also played with him in Olavs Hallen, Trondheim, Norway. There he showd us some incredible sounds, like helicopeter, elephants and some other stuff.
-yeah!
I saw him live when he came to TCU. He's a god.
And then I went home and can now play and sing into my trombone. ^_^
Brass for life.
Now just try to imagine attempting to sightread this....
I had to sight read this for my state solo and ensemble and I wanted to punch the judges in the faces I barely even got by with it
That's what I've been doing today lmao
Don't give me nightmares of that
😂😂😂😂
I tried my senior year of high school. It did not work.
You inspired an entire generation of young musicians back in the day! Including myself. Thank you!
MULTITONE GOALS! As a bass and F-Trigger Trombone player, I thoroughly enjoyed this! ALL HAIL LOW BRASS!
i love my trumpets :P
Devin Pohl oh ehm.... i dont know if its really up with how high anyone can play... the tone and tune is whats up. i can play till the super E. but in controll i can play to the C3 i think.

I play tuba in my schools marching band myself (freshman section leader!). This man has really inspired me. I hope that one day, I can even manage to play Fnugg. For a long time, I knew that what I wanted to do for the rest of my life was play music, esspecially tuba. Tuba is like my only real means of expression. And this performance is awe inspireing. This man really is a genious.
im learning this and im in 8th
How's it going after 15 years? Man, TH-cam has some old videos. I was just 2 years old when this video came out.
@@The_Fool_Above_The_Skysome times we can't realize how old is the youtube
You still a freshman? You still play Tuba?
over 3 quarter of a million hits for a dude playing Tuba
I endorse this message
@@oliviawoloshyn5824 It's a beautiful day
Damn, when I thought I had heard most of the stuff that had been done with a tuba, here comes Baadsvik.
this dude is a beast man I gotta get a horn and learn this stuff
it's a tuba lmao
Yes but it’s technically a horn too
This is probably one of the best tuba perfomances on You Tube.
I used to try to hum many years ago while playing the tuba. I never suspected it would come off so well in a performance, nor was I that good.
The percussion sounds with your tongue makes a very good jazzy sound. Plus your little dance makes for an entertaining stage show.
I realy loved the performance!
When I was in marching band as a tuba player in 2008 I came across this video and I remember practicing and practicing and eventually got competent at singing and playing. Need to get me a tuba again and get back at it.
This is the single best video on the Internet.
Heh, I've had this video on a loop for almost a day now, and it sounds just as good each time I listen to it.
i played the tuba six years in school and loved it.i went to state playing tuba.i well never forget playing my tuba.i wish i had one but i can't aford one,i am a single dad with 5 kids with no mother.tuba will keep you out of trouble.
What a wonderful musician!
Oystein Baadsvik is my hero!!!!! He truly is THE God of the tuba!
Heard this for the first time yesterday in London played by a student from the Royal Academy of Music as part of a Musical Interlude during the Graduation Ceremony, it was amazing and so unexpected. Now I can hear and watch the master, I don't really know what to say, I'm at a loss for words !!!
He came to my college and did a recital and then a masterclass in the morning. He is amazing.
すごい!!!
チューバ奏者として神の存在2つの音を出しているみたい
NICE
真的很神,雙音還有tuba的超高音,那根本就是到了小號的高音域了,從最低音、中音再到最高音,還有聲音大小,這需要用到極大的肺活量,看她臉不紅氣不喘的,真的很厲害。
I feel inadequate
I respect him!
Awsome!!
My Hero!!
Bro Ballin, assembled all the boys in seconds of dropping this banger

If You can whistle, you can practice doing multi phonics in this manner. it is always easier to create the chords than producing a true melody line.
Chris Ross do you whistle in or out when practicing??
Jake Patterson
I have done both, but is easier blowing out due to air escaping over the vocal chords.
Chris Ross ok thank you
Chris Ross also, should it sound somewhat like a butterfly tounging
Wow!! I could not move for like 30 seconds after I watched this video. BEST THING IVE EVER SEEN! easily 10 STAR
As for all of the questions about how to do and how multiphonics work. In brass instruments, the most common method of producing multiphonics is by simultaneously playing the instrument and singing into it. When the sung note is part of the overtone series of the played note, a third note that is the sum of the frequencies of the sung note and the played note is produced; a difference between them is also produced, leading to the popular term trumpet/trombone/horn growl.
I am Brazilian, and I enjoyed more, I also play tuba, but you've become a myth, classical music, and tuba solos in all, I have no words to express the admiration in all his videos, I hope you understand, the I'm writing. your fan ... Demer sao paulo "applause."
定期的に聴きにきたくなるうまさ。

its kind of sad how the audience tries to clap along with him, but it's so out of the time that he has to adjust.

saw this as a trumpet play thought "wtf" came back a few months later as a tuba thought "OMG Best thing on TH-cam!!!"
Tell Dakota "here is something to shoot for" because awesomeness only comes once in a lifetime!. I'm proud to know that he can think big like this.....Keep it up boy!
baadsvik just played a concert at IUP's OctTubafest and it was probably the best concert ive ever seen
Well, i can agree to this. i was also there aswell in the RSAMD. Double bass tuba. It was a sunday many years ago and it ran shivers down my spine. Had the whole place in an aura, and was amazing to listen to. Such a nice guy , wouldnt think he was a bass player as most of us are all huge ha
He's just great. Never had more fun watching a tuba beeing played.
Oh man. He sounds like a euphonium on some parts, especially the beginning. That's some high tuba work.
This is the most amazing thing I've ever heard
Tuba power!!!
I love being a tuba player. I feel powerful in my marching band.
When I was in high school and total band geek, I had this in the background of my group project for Lord of the Flies HAHAHAHA. In hindsight I'm sure my group had mixed feelings but my teacher loved it and gave us a better grade because of the editing hahaha. I still play my Euphonium with a local concert band.
i absolutely love the dance he does when he does this, does it every time
i love when low instruments do solos! as a bassist i have a respect for all "bass cleft" instruments
I've had a concert with him years ago and i was truly amazed - I gave up BB-Bass and recently started after 8 years break and this is a truly magnificent piece of music... The song itself isn't hard but trying to get the voice and playing the correct notes is the hardest part - Rock On Dude
My brain is melting at the sheer brilliance of this...
Unglaublich was er mit der Tuba hinbekommt. Vor allem ist das ein richtiger Ohrwurm, wenn er richtig loslegt. Echt mal was anderes, und vor allem Klasse!
I play the tuba and i never realized how much you can do with it....that is simply amazing
I would beat box into my tuba in high school. everyone thought i was nuts. This guy is awesome!!
my tuba teacher played this for me yesterday. not the whole thing but some of it. tuba is such a gorgeous instrument. =D
Comment if Trent Hamilton sent you.
+ThePhantomGuy TPG Thumbs up
Yep
yes sir
yep
I had already seen it, but Trent sent me here to watch it 10 times more
He makes that thing sound like an euphonium. I thought i was nice on tuba this guy is really good.
It leaves me speachless and makes me want to throw my tuba on the scrap heap.
This guy totaly rocks :D! played with him in Uppsala 6-7 mars 2009, he gave me a few good tips on to play Tuba :D
This is the coolest tuba song ever!
Been practicing this to play in a university band competition, and although I've never seen the music it's almost up to his standard :D he is so amazing!
He came in as a Guest Artist at my University. One of the highlights for me of last semester.
most beautiful tuba sound ive heard so far
this guy is seriously my hero....
Oh my God! Wow, this guy truly is THE God of tuba.
You are my tuba idol, i wish i had the money to buy myself a tuba so i could become as great as you Mr. Baadsvik
You do not know HOW MUCH I wanna be a brass player right now. It is now one of my life's goals to play the Tuba.
AMAZING. When I first heard the opening, before Mr. Baadsvik was on camera, I said, "Nice euphonium solo." I've never heard someone who can play with such consistency in that range.
The rest of the piece is awesome, too.
Mr. Baadsvik, your work is out of this world. Thanks for posting it for our enjoyment.
People that would dislike this video are ether jealous that they can't play like him or they don't like this type of music but still why would you listen to something you don't like?
From the way he moves around, you can tell that he was at somepoint in a very good marching band.
I am a trombone player I've been able to do the humming while playing thing whatever it's called but not in a very melodic manner lol. It is a very weird sensation!
Ahh yes thank you forgot what it was called. :)
Well it does sound best on the Tuba because it was discovered on it
+Brogan Kogler part of the reason it sounds so good on tuba is it is a very large resonating chamber
+Chris Houston That it is
Practice your solfege. I promise it will help.
this... is... so... frakking... beastmode.... O.O -strokes out from multiphonic joy-
I can't get enough of this guy!
Bravo!
That is amazing, as a tuba player myself, people like this guy make it worth while. The coolness is indescribably great.
he sings into the tuba to create contrast and puts a quarter into his mouthpiece to make an extra vibration.
Unbelievably great! I had no idea a tuba could sound like this, and the composition is just gorgeous! Thanks.
this guy is awesome. he did a master class at my college one time. it was mandatory for all tuba students to attend. lol. so i got to meet him and laugh as he serenaded the only female player in the studio.
I have played the Tuba for about four years now, and I love it!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
I didn't know that the tuba had such a haunting sound. Cool stuff.
Very nice. Not only is the music amazing but it help me learn the meaning of fnugg and the pronunciation.
This song always makes me want to dance. It's so catchy!
Beautiful tone.
Yay - more tuba clips - fabulous!
Man i played the tuba for many years, now he makes me want to go and start playing it professionally. As a fellow tuba player he rocks!!!
6:18-7:10 never heard anybody "freestyle" on a tuba before lol, this man is a genius on the tuba. so glad i got a chance to see this.
just saw him play this yesterday at the IEI with Jukka Myllys playing the drums, it was bad ass.
nothing like the sound of a deep mellow brass note
he is just way too awesome. his legacy will always continue..
I learned some of the most valuable lessons about the tuba from Øystein himself, and then we had chicken wings. My life is now complete.
This is truly amazing, now I know everone says that, but I had never heard these styles put together like that before I saw this video. Love the multi-phonics.
OHMYGOODNESS. I watched this about ten times. this guy is amazing!
He's awesome!
I've had the opportunity of playing this piece with him at the RSAMD(scotland).
He made a guest appearance with my brass band.
It was incredible to see it in person and play along with such a great talent.
i have never heard anything so amazing in my life.
No, it's just a smaller sized tuba that's easier to carry. It still puts out the same sound as a regular tuba would, it's just the tubing is more compact in the body.
here's Dick Griffen on multiphonics:"To begin playing multiphonics, play a low Bb and hold it for four counts. Then play the low Bb for another four counts and on the second count try to sing through the horn. Just try to make any audible sound while the note is going--get the note first and then let your voice seep through. Once your voice seeps through, you'll start to hear some clarity in the chords. Stay on the Bb for a good period of time and then learn to move up or down from there.
The multiphonics are just incredible, my concert band is doing this piece, quite phenomental.
that guy must have some amazing muscles to play that style of piece that long in that range at that speed
Inspirational for any tubist! I have begun to hon my skills (again) after moving from tuba to bass then back. What fun! It shows. Thanks. R
This makes me want to lock myself in my room and practice. lol.
@phantomverse
Actually I play the clarinet, and I didn't like the tuba, until this March (maybe because the tuba players around me are... ehm, nevermind), when I participated in an international music competition, where Baadsvik was a jury member. After the competition there was a jury's concert, and he played this piece (in solo version) on it. It was my best ever concert experience, it was fantastic to hear him live. Since then I like and respect the tuba. Thanks for sharing this awesome vid!
I need to play this one day for a solo contest and get the easiest win ever
this guy is great and I love the rythmic flow of the band.
I watched this video like 20 times yesterday
