This video is legitimately the reason I am still playing music. When I first saw it six years ago, I was a 20-year-old who missed marching band. this inspired me to Keep pursuing music in nontraditional ways. Now I'm in a weird hippie marching band doing paid gigs all over Chicago. Thanks, Nat. And thanks, Adam for sharing this.

It takes a lot to huff and puff a sousaphone as loud as he does. And playing it as high off the scale as he does takes a genuine effort.

that happens with a heavy instrumnet like that. wait till you wake up the next morning sonetimes your bac k would hurt from all that weight, an especially your shoulder if you dont have the proper padding for it.

Or maybe those who do have a musical ear and prefer the original? This one is surely played well, but it lacks the edge - and most importantly the groove: Big orchestras can't swing - and I am talking physics here. And these guys are out of sync despite their conductor.

I just want to say thank you God for my ears to hear such wonderful sounds. And thank you to the TH-cam algorithm for showing me this amazing clip. Until yesterday, I had never heard this before or knew anything about the Youngblood Brass band. I have replayed from about 05:13 onward over 50 times since just last night. Everything about this is perfect; the way he dances with the tuba, the way he is sweating, the conducter, the other horns in the back. This right here took me back to my preteen years when I first fell in love with the sound of the tubas and the marching band in general. Oh my lord is all I can say. I am blown away and this man and his sound has made me decide right here and now that I am purchasing a tuba within the next week to pursue my true passion...being in a band and blasting my little heart out on this big horn. I haven't played since college in 20 years so I am excited to see how much I remember and how far I can go with it. Wish me luck guys!

I have watched this video at least 20 times now. You are right, everything about this performance is perfect. 7 minutes of the most intense brass playing I have ever seen. He channels every bit of his soul through that horn. I've played trumpet for 35 years and this was the inspiration I didn't know I needed.

keep in mind the micing technique. He places the mic pretty deep in the bell, which makes it incredibly clear than a centered or side mic'd sousa. It is definitely a Bb, you can tell by the tubing. The cat has mad chops and can play clean, dont try to put that credit on the horn.

Not sure how is it called but is is simple use of own voice together with instrument's sound. It works on any wind instrument you can find around the world, be it sax, tuba or didgeridoo, but not so much conventional players are aware of that :).

Initialdluvr, I'm taking a shot at this. Nat's flexiblity on the horn is very good, so a lot of "breaks" he does in between the drum stops are a combination of these: half valving, stacatto notes with/ voice (Multiphonics), voice with a flutter tongue without playing the instrument, and voice alone during the scratches and yell.

I never watched the concert put on by the University. But I did once,on PBS. And it was this show. My jaw was on the floor. That’s the baddest ass bitchin tones ever produced by way of brass. You literally have to crawl into that instrument and put in on! Wraps around you like an anaconda. It would never dare to tame a beast like that. What a cool instrument.
