People are OK, most of the time, but gimme a dog any time, any place. Best dog I ever had was a pedigree mutt. True! Sire was a pedigree Labrador Retriever, dam was a pedigree German Shepherd owned by my aunt and uncle. They gave me the runt of the litter, when I was in high school, after I lost my first dog. Sam grew to about 95 pounds of solid muscle, coal black from head to foot but with a classic Shepherd physique. Strong as an ox, fast as a deer, brave as a lion, and loyal as, well, as only a good dog can be. He's been gone for over thirty years, and I've had many dogs since then, but I still miss him almost every day. Thanks, Joe. Watching Scout always reminds me of Sam, for some maudlin reason. I can tell from watching your videos that Scout is an exceptional dog, and you have trained him well. I just recently had to put my best friend down. His name was Harley. He was a Border Collie, and my absolute best friend for 13 years. And a smarter, better dog never lived. It isn't easy, but you know the day you get them, that day is coming. I tell myself that he lived a wonderful life, and went out at home, with me beside him. It's still never easy. I'm going to wait awhile before I get another one, but the German Shepard is at the top of my list. I just hope that whatever it is, he enjoys the outdoors as much as Harley (and Scout).
Scout's a great dog. I think we are lucky to have one really great dog in life. Mine is a lab named Vince, he will be 13 next month. He is completely deaf and has some arthritis. But his quality of live is still pretty good. His walks in the woods are much slower now and he doesn't leap over logs like he used to. He retired from duck hunting a couple of years ago. I know I will be devastated when he does go. Savor your days with Scout. He is a good boy.
You commented this two years ago but I feel compelled to say..you are absolutely right. We are lucky to have one really great dog in life. I’ve had several dogs but one in particular became my very best friend. I never knew her breed since she was a rescue. I got her when she was around 2 years old. She was shy and timid. She was abused before I got her. It didn’t take her long to open up to me. She then became my jogging companion. Ran with me every single day. My best story of her is when she got spooked out in the woods. I couldn’t find her and I was devastated. A week had passed by and in the middle of the night we heard scratching at our front door. I opened it up and there she was. Somehow she found her way home. Needless to say I was beyond happy and thrilled. Long story short, a couple months ago I had to make the decision to put her down. She had cancer and it spread fast to her lungs. But she gave me 12 amazing years of love and friendship. There’s really nothing else like it in the world. -Proud Dad to a great doggo.

I am so sorry for your loss Joe, I've only just started to really get into the Bushcraft stuff about a year ago and I've been a casual viewer, be but Scout was always one of my very favorite things about your video. Having to put my 15 year old dog down a couple years back, I couldn't really see myself ever getting a dog again. That is, until I saw your videos. You both inspired me to open myself up to the possibility of owning a dog again someday. I bawled like a baby throughout the entirety of your goodbye video and even now, am still struggling to keep it together while I type this. That's kind of true but each breed has particular characteristics and temperaments which will be suited or not suited to different types of people and family circumstances.

Ya Scout! He ROCKS! That is a family member that took one for the team, you can't get better than that. I think he took it knowing that if he fought back some one might get caught up in the may lay and hurt, so no collateral damage from Scout fighting, just keeping the family safe.

Beautiful story, Joe. I know this is an outdoors channel but this is by far my favorite video you have done. I lost my Boxer and best friend 2 years ago and still haven't replaced her. Can't bring myself to do it yet. We still have our Mastiff/ Boxer mix and I definitely understand how they are more than pets, they are family. My Boxer and my wife's Mastiff/Boxer mix would never allow anyone or anything get near my son unless I gave them the okay. The Boxer/Mastiff mix is named Pixi. When the doorbell rings or someone knocks at the door, she won't allow my son to go near the door. She stands guard until one of the adults answers the door and of course, she answers it as well. She is trained that once I allow someone in the house then she will relax. She will still herd my son when a new person is around. She only allows family and our neighbors that she knows and trusts near him. We got her when he was 3. He is now 9 and she is 6, she sees him more as her puppy, playtoy and her responsibility to guard. I love Scout's story and hearing how he is a great dog. Thanks so much for sharing this video. Oh, one more thing, leave Scout alone when he is whining about sticks. He just needs an axe of his own to help you prep wood. ha ha ha All the best to you and your family.

He's not pure Malinois. He looks a lot more like a Shepinois, (hipster designer breed name) which just means he's half Shepard, half Mal. No mater what you call him, he's an awesome pup and I'm jealous.

hi Joe ,just what you said about supplements for the joints and bones it's a common problem with German Shepard's as my German Shepard had she was loyal,loving ,and protective and she lived till she was 16 so I would say scout has a lot more years to come

Scout is a buddy type dog that remembers the good treatment he's given and reciprocates that. All dogs treated fairly just want to show love for they're family. He's priceless! My female german shepard did the same thing.
I had a blue heeler. He passed away suddenly a week ago. best dog I ever had. I really recommend that breed. he was a good guard dog but also goofy and fun to be around. Great camping and fishing dog.
New sub to your channel. Good stuff man. Had a pure bred Shep. Lost him 3 1/2 yrs ago. He was nearing 10 yrs old. Internal bleeding turned an awesome night into the worst morning of my life. Was the most loyal pup to anybody I wanted to be around...for those I wanted to have distance from..his 104 lbs got the point across. He just new! Give Scout a 'high 5' for me! Great pup Great story Cleary a member of a supportive family if closer to the shep side of the equation... or in general for any reading my rescued shepherd lived to 14+ and over 5,000 days together. Dogs are considered geriatric at 10 plus Overtime, We just make adjustments as we all do with those we love. My boy at 100 lbs with paws the size of softballs had zero hip or joint issues of significance until 12.5+ an active reasonable life was a plus. Upon reflection, and based on my history, and treatments... consider discussing running full body x- rays routinely as a proactive, not reactive effort when you see and keep a copy of the top arch of any large bred's spine, hips, organs you will never look at their joint health and general health quite the same way understanding how drs. feel for anomalies in structure and organs is another plus and contributes to any routine massage by your family and ultimately treatment options for our pets maybe watch read up on shepherd spleens massage on any dog especially larger, older breeds is a way to.... give back. plenty of videos out there k9 rehab centers also use heated immersion tanks and submerged treadmills with buoyancy vests and apply massage, using therapists in wet suits also submerged in these tubs with dogs facing away from them, other, to treat and maintain mobility injuires and joint health. a lot of positives associated with accu-pressure treatments as well real !!! supportive bedding and on occasion, low level heated underlayers, is not a bad gift for those pets that are slowing down a bit and feeling the damper, colder climates, or the end of an active day more so vs. a few years back, and can not always communicate fully how they are feeling not intended to preach Clearly your boy and other dogs in supportive families are doing just fine and have benefitted from quality care and have long, great lives ahead rip Polo.. . . .

my rescued shepherd lived to 14+ and over 5,000 days together.
Dogs are considered geriatric at 10 plus
Overtime, We just make adjustments as we all do with those we love.
My boy at 100 lbs with paws the size of softballs had zero hip or joint issues of significance until 12.5+ an active reasonable life was a plus.
Upon reflection, and based on my history, and treatments...
consider discussing running full body
x- rays routinely as a proactive, not reactive effort
when you see and keep a copy of the top arch of any large bred's spine, hips, organs you will never look at their joint health and general health quite the same way
understanding how drs. feel for anomalies in structure and organs is another plus and contributes to any routine massage by your family and ultimately treatment options for our pets
maybe watch read up on shepherd spleens
massage on any dog especially larger, older breeds is a way to....
give back.

k9 rehab centers also use heated immersion tanks and submerged treadmills with buoyancy vests and apply massage, using therapists in wet suits also submerged in these tubs with dogs facing away from them, other, to treat and maintain mobility injuires and joint health.
a lot of positives associated with accu-pressure treatments as well
real !!! supportive bedding and on occasion, low level heated underlayers, is not a bad gift for those pets that are slowing down a bit and feeling the damper, colder climates, or the end of an active day more so vs. a few years back, and can not always communicate fully how they are feeling
