Thank you for this video! Sometimes I do forget and do compare my dogs and myself to others on TH-cam etc. But we do have to remember to give ourselves and dogs permission to mess up in order to get it right! 😅
Dogs aren’t people and I hesitate to compare them but yes, like human kids they have different skill sets and potentials, often need different teaching methods, and learn by making mistakes. Fairness above all.
Always enjoy your time you give us to help us train our dogs they are so much better when they have a little knowledge of what is expected from them. Thanks a lot. Have a great day.
Thank you Robert, there is nothing to add! I enjoy and watch the amazing work of dedicated trainers but would never demand or even try it with my Malinois. She is stray and later rescue from a crowed shelter in Romania and needs other things. Greetings from Germany 🇩🇪
people don't see the decades of work pro trainers put in to get to these points when they first get into dog training, I managed to get all the fundamentals solid in my dog in under 2 years now I can build from that with help from the pros I've got access to locally. Then maybe in a decade I'll know half as much as they do
Thank you Robert. Even when we know these things its important to hear. My Kita is a stubborn high prey drive dog. She is IMHO extremely smart and does a lot of anticipating so i HAVE to change up my routine or pattern with her so she listens to the commands instead of WHAT SHE ANTICIPATES. SHE has given me a TRUE run for my money since rescue at 3 months and come Jan 3 she will be 2. She is loving, attentive and a velcro dog as all of mine have been and is FINELY learning PATIENCE. she is a Belgian Malinios crossed with American Akita and was a reject from a backyard breeder that didnt know her Malinios was with her American Akita so until i rescued her she was essentially given food and water but little socialization so we really did start at ground Zero. I love her to death and Schmoo is growing like a weed and seems to have a great temperment....
Love it! I also want to point to those of us attending group training classes Never assume other dog behavior or faults I had a 7 month gsd puppy, my trainer was holding my pup leash for an exercise and my puppy try to mouth the trainer and another dog owner with an older dog made a big deal Ohh that dog just tried to bite you? Excuse me sir my dog is a puppy How old is your dog 4 years he replied I was so mad
I credit your honesty and transparency! Bravo sir Robert Cabral Bravo! You helped me personally separate the wheat from the chaff in the online dog training space. I think you brilliantly articulate your reasoning and back it up with experience and expertise. You sir are the wheat that eventually ends up as a loaf of Miche.
Thanks! I knew that but nice to hear your good words as a reminder. I will say my youngest dog can do what your dog is doing right now😂. I started nose work with two of my dogs and they love it, but I was the one who thought it would be boring. They taught me something!
So true! When you are in training and in classes a lot, you get to see even the best and smartest make a mistake. You realise, oh, they do that and it’s ok. Reset, restart, all in good fun!
Coming back after 5 years with my dog Moka. Year after year, watching your videos makes me understand the point of dog training. Fairness. Thanks so much robert!
Through the mistakes they are going to learn and through the mistakes will make us become better trainers with them. I needed to hear this today. I have been fighting back tears of frustration most of the morning today. Thank you so much for this. Happy Training! 😊
I find it interesting to see not only how much an animal's disposition and personal interest varies from another but how obvious it is; you don't necessarily have to have years of professional experience to tell what a dog would be good at doing if you just listen to them. My first GSD could have done anything except therapy work, SAR,or similar; she just didn't care one jot about people. My second GSD would have been an excellent SAR dog if the expense wasn't so prohibitive. My mutt...well, she's a great shop dog and could have been a great pig hunting dog. My malinois can probably do anything that involves direct and continuous handler interaction and communication...sheep herding, obedience, tricks, etc.
Exactly truth ❤❤ and it takes a lot of time and patience and dedication plus years I was lucky enough with one of mine when i rescued her from a kill shelter in TN and she was on her 11th hour 😢💔.. but she’s a unicorn 🦄 of the malinois world she’s a wonderful farm and family member i wouldn’t have it any other way i adopted her from ABMR after I fostered her for a few months in 2019 she was 9 years old and now she’s 13 and loved by my whole family ❤️❤️❤️
My Bella is a star in everything except for being overprotective. She is a abused owner rescue, so she bonded with the family and is super obedient with family, but strangers and small animals are being impossible for now. She is two, and we are still working on it. Yet we have to remember it's a malinois, meaning work on it, work on it, and then work on it 😅
I bought a working dog with the intention of raising him to be a service dog for myself. Being a government income receiver it took me years to save for a breed I'm not allergic to and spent $4200 for my doberman, so I'm greatly conflicted and it's hard to accept my dog to just be and become anything other than a future service dog. Purchasing an already trained service dog would have been ideal but the cost of $26 000. is beyond my capability to save for. With that said, now that I've been a first time dog owner for 5 months I completely understand and actually agree with what you say, which is where the internal conflict come from. Ugh! Le sigh 😮💨
Lol, oh yeah. Was doing FETCH, now an AKC event, with my younger Dobe. He went flying out after the ball and promptly started looking for hides. Ok Zoso, Nose Work it is. Drive about 45 minutes one way, but learning so much. More than when I was doing Nose Work closer to home. Both of my Dobes do a pretty every single time they come in from outside. Now teaching my Beagle/JRT mix. You would think that would be easier for the little dog. Not yet. Thank you for this video.
With a Sport GSD and a working scent animal, they learn from mistakes as I have. Not too many trainers on social media can show me guidance. I had a good K9 trainer who really helped me in person for my dog’s drive.
I have a 10 month old pup. Have tried all different sports this year. She loves agility- just not sure how great at it I will be!! Competition obed has always been my favorite, but I am willing to venture out into new venues if she wants to!!
Hi reaching out for advice and help. My beautiful 2 year old red fox labrador has been diagnosed with a Collapsing Trachea level 2. I'm really struggling to find a harness that I can use. I was thinking to use a Norwegian harness but I have been advised they still pull at the Trachea. The harnesses, I have looked at don't fit his frame as he is big and very sturdy in his frame. 32kg. If the harness fits his shoulder then it's lose on his back and thoracic lumbar area and vice versa. Most harnesses only adjust in one of the 2 areas. So I feel they are also slipping, sliding and pulling on him. He is a working dog and his current harness is his trigger to work. I need to very different styles of harness. One for work and one for relaxed exercise. I'd really appreciate any advice or suggestions or links to products.
Corrections on a dog is the same thing as corrections on a kid. If your kid do something wrong, you will not correct them necessarily with a spank! So it’s the same thing for the dog. There is nothing bad with corrections as long as they’re done properly and fair
is it true that you need walk with Belgian Malinior more than with a normal shepherd? I mean of course both are not made for a couch potato day … because I have 2 swiss white shepherd‘s thats why I am asking

Great advice.
I think you wore him out. He said "no more video's today dad"

Thank you for this reminder. 💞🐶
You are so welcome
I did this when I first got my gsd puppy. I would get so discouraged until our class trainer reminded me of this. Very good reminder!!!!

Well, that's not what most other dog trainers say; thank you for not making us feel like complete morons when our dogs or we get it wrong

Thank you for being totally honest Robert! Finally! I’m a dog trainer and I know what you’re saying is So So True!

Hi Robert,
You so right,.. and you talking about this,..
Greetings from South Africa

Beautiful well said
Thanks, I appreciate it!
"No grass!! (and that's a very, very firm correction)" ... moments pass ... *dog goes back to eating grass* 😂

I found it very confusing, but then I'm in the UK. and I competed Obedience at Crufts 50 years ago.
