I saw this episode when it first aired but I actually missed “The Puppet master” so I genuinely did not know that Katara was capable of blood bending or that blood bending was a thing.

Something I noticed when Zuko fell after his fight with Azula, is that Katara is the one that catches him. Even though she harbored some animosity towards him she still cared. Otherwise she would’ve let my man fall or had someone else catch him.

I love this analysis! It missed one point, though.. its ties to "The puppet master". What Hama did on her prison break was so horrifying and terrible, that the Fire Nation decided to simply exterminate any waterbender they saw. They probably killed any waterbender left in that prison, purged the south pole of any waterbending, and stopped taking prisoners from there.

One thing I like to point out about his episode is the ending part that a lot of people miss. Some criticize Katara for never apologizing to Sokka in the episode, even if it was for something that was said in the heat of the moment. Although, I'll still defend it and say there was a lot of truth to what Katara said. Anyway, a lot of people take issue with her never saying anything to Sokka about it after. But you can clearly see Katara walking over to Sokka who is waiting by Appa at the end of the episode. I think it's smart that they don't have that conversation on screen, because logical fans understand what will be said and that they will always be siblings who are there for each other.

Look there’s a big difference between a justification and an explanation but at the end of the day There’s no Defending what Katara said to Sokka FULL STOP. It was cruel, it was unnecessary and it was Katara lashing out in pain in anger in an unhealthy way FULL STOP. Katara is 100% validated in her feelings, what she’s not validated to do is behave however she pleases regardless of the consequences and say cruel things to the people who love her simple becuase they don’t agree with how she’s choosing to handle things. There’s no “truth” in what Katara said. There’s no truth in her belittling both aang and Sokka feelings and lived experiences simply becuase they aren’t having as visceral a reaction as she is. Her being more traumatized by Kya passing DOESNT equate to loving their mother more that’s an insanity and not at all how truama works. She told a genocide survivor he couldn’t understand her loss or her pain or where she was coming from. This is what I mean by explanation VS justification, her feelings 100% EXPLAIN why she’s acting the way she is but there NO justifying saying these horrible and cruel things as being ACCEPTABLE EVER and especially not towards the people who love and support you😤👏
People seem to misunderstand Aangs main point, it wasn’t that her feelings weren’t valid. It’s that the way she was handling this was TOXIC AF and JUST like Jet, becoming a person so consumed with their anger and hate that it twists them into soemthing cruel who lashes out even at people who don’t deserve it. JUST like she was doing with Aang and Sokka. Aangs point was extremely VALID and she quite literally followed his advice word for word at the end. We can acknowledge both Kataras need for closure and valid emotional state and that she lashed out unnecessarily too. 🤷🏻‍♂️

@@AustinSamson1999 yeah except katara WAS right. He didn't love her like katara did. Sokka even admits this verbally and through his behavior during the show. He couldn't even remember his own mother's face even though he spent a year longer with her than katara got. He disrespects Kya's sacrifice constantly. I don't see how you can disagree that what katara said is 100% true. It's different for the two of them.

@@Waterk11 Her actions and words to Aang and Sokka were cruel FULL STOP even if you do agree with what she said and she’s NEVER gonna be justified in saying them. Her feelings ARENT the only ones that matters and her being upset doenst give her a license to say cruel things FULL STOP, But even STILL as somebody who actually has worked with and understands how real trauma responses work to imply that becuase Katara was more traumatized by the incident and therefore has stronger core memories attached to them and her mother that it means she “loved her mother more” is INCREDIBLY ignorant, NOT supported by any actual facts and AGAIN, incredibly hurtful and cruel to imply. we’re not gonna play trauma Olympics and compare suffering. Sokka loved his mother, he misses and clearly his stills effected by what happened to his mother and nobody gets to invalidate that simply because Katara is upset, her pain isn’t more valid than his. Her memories ARENT worth more than his. And NO, there’s been exactly zero evidicen of Sokka “disrespecting her sacrifice” idk where you even pulled that from but it WASNT from official lore I can say that much 🤷🏻‍♂️
Either way there seems to be a double standard here and there’s a level of ignorance and lack of compassion here that’s not even worth engaging with anymore. Katara has an explanation for her behavior this episode, but she 100% DOESNT have a justification and she never will for these cruel words 🤷🏻‍♂️😤👏

@@AustinSamson1999 you just wrote a whole essay and it was waste of time bc your entire argument is flawed. Katara never said she loved her mother more. She told sokka that he didn't love her like she did. That means that their love for their mom is different and that's absolutely true. But let's be real even if their morals or viewpoints differed, it's a absolutely egregious that neither aang nor sokka joined her on her journey. Especially sokka. He didn't even care enough to face the man that murdered his mother, even if he didn't want to harm him. That speaks volumes to the difference in their love for their mother. Even if it was just to remind them of their differing advice and to continually try to convince her that killing him wasn't right, they should have accompanied her. Instead zuko did. And the only defense against that apathy that they showed for the issue is a narrative one, because the premise of the episode is fromor katara to have her zuko field trip

While this episode has so much great stuff in it, the ending has always bugged me, I feel like her basically pulling the trigger on ending this guy and deciding not to happens to abruptly.
And the fact that she uses blood bending on the wrong guy and they never discuss that, like that just happened and we’re moving on.
Maybe her blood bending Yon Rha and realizing what she’s doing would be a better reason for her to stop and then realize he’s not worth it

One of the things I’ve found so interesting about this episode upon rewatch, and especially seeing reactions to the episode is how I just think fundamentally Aang and Katara just have different interpretations of what forgiveness means. If you look at the ACTUAL definition of what it means to forgive it says “stop feeling angry or resentful toward (someone) for an offense, flaw, or mistake” and that’s literally the EXACT advice Aang gives her this episode saying “Confront him but when you do let the anger go.”
Where as I think Katara interprets what Aang is telling her is to ACCEPT or be okay with what happened to her mother which isn’t what he means AT ALL. His pain and loss for the airnoamds has never gotten less, he’s not “okay” with what Sozin did to them. It’s not a relinquishment of being wronged and having truama and hurt but what he meant was for Katara to take all the hate and anger and healthily release it to stop Holding it inside for it to corrupt her and turn her into somebody like Jet who was so consumed with hate and revenge that it made him lash out even at innocent people JUST like Katara did at the beggining of the episode by telling a GENOCIDE SURVIVOR that he couldn’t possibly understand loss or where she was coming from or telling Sokka he didn’t love his own MOTHER. Advice which she followed at the end. I love the writing and nuance in this episode so much, especially cuz in a lot of ways it parallels Katara calming Aang when he found Gyatsos body or being his emotional Rock in the desert when Appa was gone and he almost pooped off on the sandbenders. When they’re at their lowest points the other one is always able to remind them who they are at their CORES, and they’re both people of love and peace and kindness🙏🏻😭🙌

What you said at the beginning about the comparasions beyween seasons 2 and 3 is exactly how I feel.
Book 2 has the best overall structure and connection.
Book 3 kind of lacks that. But its individual Chapters are some of the best episodes in the show.

So glad I saw this video in my feed. Avatar was such a fun show, and I'm always happy to be reminded of it. Also, Aang was wrong at the beginning in my opinion. Maybe it's just my background but if someone murders your family member; he is not allowed to die a natural death. He is not allowed to die in his bed. Your kin must be avenged no matter how long it takes. By all rights Sokka should have gone along as well, buuut it was necessary for Katara and Zukonto have this moment.

Yeah no, it’s easy to understand where Kataras coming from and I totally get ur side of this but aang 100% wasn’t wrong at the beginning. By definition he was actually correct since Katara literally followed his advice word for word at the end 🤷🏻‍♂️ especially cuz aamg is a Genocide survivor upholding his peoples most sacred belief and tradition of valuing all life and peace. He’s holding onto and preserving his culture and a piece of his identity and coming from a place of true UNDERSTANDING of what Katara is feeling and how to fix it. Aang giving the advice his people would give ISNT the wrong decision, it’s keeping their memory alive in a world that’s purposefully tried to forget them and their teachings. It’s spreading a message of peace that’s legit the opposite of everything the firenation, and ironically enough Zuko himself in this episode are saying. And given the end of the series I’d say this message and how aang chooses to be steadfast towards it is one of the most important aspects of his character and the overall PLOT as a whole. If he wasn’t this person who held onto these beliefs in episodes like this then the ending would NEVER have been possible 🤷🏻‍♂️ when people say he shouldn’t have said anything, what they’re really saying is the Genocide survivor shouldn’t use his peoples atrocities to try and advocate for less death and violence. That a genocide survivor doesn’t understand the pain of loss like Katara does. That a genocide survior should stay quite so other people can do whatever they want. Personally not the message I’d send but that’s just me 🤷🏻‍♂️

@@snakey934Snakeybakey “In my opinion it’s wrong for a Genocide survivor to suggest advice that’s from his culture and identity that’s been purposefully suppressed in an effort to stop his friend from commuting an act that will destroy her emotionally for the rest of her life.” Okay, Keep ur opinion boo🤣
YOU can handle revenged however you please but this is about KATARA. And how SHE would react to things and Aang’s SPECIFIC advice towards HER. “Well, I would do this if it were me and since Aang DIDNT do that he’s WRONG” isn’t an opinion that’s valid here sorry🤷🏻‍♂️ this is about how Katara could NEVER live with herself if she ever hurt someone defenseless like that even IF they are a bad person. It’s not in her nature FULL STOP. Aang’s advice was recognizing that, recognizing she needed closure but NOT to cross a line and that’s the advice she followed word for word EXACTLY at the end. So again, I fail to see how even in “ur opinion” anything he did could ever constitute as being “wrong”. You know what’s REALLY wrong? Katara telling Sokka he didn’t love his own mother or telling aang, a genocide survivor he doesn’t understand pain and loss like she does. Aang was 100% within his right to say what he did 😤👏
