    It's interesting how perfectly Katara embodies the element of water. As a gentle, kind, and compassionate healer, and as a strong, passionate and merciful warrior. Water brings life, but it also brings death. And that is perfectly Katara.

    Most shows (books are better but still do this a lot) make the Heart the weakest in terms of combat, with their only role they might be good at as healer. Katara was as powerful and dangerous a combatant as any other member of the gAang. Even before her anger & delayed grieving surfaced, she showed the duality of herself and of water.

    • @bug1494
      @bug1494 4 ปีที่แล้ว +74

      in a way all the members represented their element. Aang was flexible and creative but also suffered often from a lack of conviction. Toph was sturdy and stalwart but her stubborness was often a weakness as well as a strength. Zuko was strong willed and unafraid to chase his goals but was also tempermental and let his emotions rule him. Sokka had an analytical mind that allowed him to plan and use his allies powers to their fullest but it also often lead to him overthinking things. And kitara could adapt to situations as needed a master of both healing as well as offensive bending however like water itself she could sometimes get caught up in one direction leading to an explosive reaction.

    I feel like people really undermine Katara’s struggles. She was forced into a motherly role at a seriously young age which would have left no room for a healthy response to grief and trauma and the added weight of how her mother was protecting her. With Sokka he wasn’t forced into a role so he had time to process. Of course Katara saying how she must love her more was not justified but she would have had to push these feelings down. The episode were she went after her mother’s killer was really good and I’m glad we had it. Also the desert episode she was the one who stepped up and she got no thanks for it. Katara always puts everyone else first and by saying she is selfish or preachy is just undermining the character.

      Exactly, I'm so annoyed that people find Katara "annoying" just because she wants to grieve over her mother, something that she didn't have the chance to do when she was younger. She never had that outlet and that's why she lashes out so much

    • @robynm9596
      @robynm9596 3 ปีที่แล้ว +98

      I agree, even in her "annoying" moments like telling Sokka he must not have loved their mom as much, or when she snapped at Aang for being a prodigy, I thought it made her so much more realistic. And right after her mother died, her dad left to fight. She had just lost one parent and then had to watch the other one leave to go head first into dangerous battle. She had to grow up fast and I feel like that's why she's so matire and why Sokka has that desire for "time-wasting nonsense" sometimes, they both had to grow up really fast.

      Also it is heavily implied she seen her mother’s burned dead body when she entered their home. She was likely traumatized and never got to process that grief because she took up that motherly role. For a lot of the series we see her struggle to not become overwhelmed with pain and doubles down on her motherly role likely because that is what she had to do before but she has a new mission which is to take care of the avatar and end the war so she feels like she needs to be there to support everyone else emotionally and eventually she can’t do it anymore and then it all comes out

    People sometimes say they dislike Katara for that moment where she tells Sokka that he didn't love his mother like she did. When I saw that scene as an adult, I was genuinely hurt. Not for Sokka, but for Katara. For such a kind-hearted, protecting and understanding character to say something like that. It really shows how hurt she is herself at that moment. The pain she feels at that moment about the loss of her mother and having to accept that not every person in the fire nation is terrible, like she always has believed and probably wants to believe to not make her trauma and healing more complex than it already is; that pain is just so enormously big that she cannot be herself at that point. And that brings tears to my eyes everytime I watch it. The southern raiders truly is a master piece.

    Katara is a character who could have easily been written the wrong way. She could have ended up being a generic “female member of the group” character who never really had any development beyond being the resident water bender. She also could have been very annoying, if she’d been made into the “impractically compassionate” person who couldn’t see her own mistakes. But instead of these, Katara is a deep character who has her own flaws. And, interestingly, her flaws are born out of her strengths. She is such a powerful water bender that she felt she could challenge a master water bender to a duel, and she is so caring that when someone she cares about is hurt, she lashes out. It was a big moment when she threatened Zuko’s life, because we’d never actually seen her fighting to kill. She tended to freeze her enemies in place or find some other way to disable them. But to protect Aang from someone who had been a threat in the past, she was willing to go all the way. Katara’s moments of anger, like when she threatened to kill Zuko, when she yelled at her father, or when she accused Sokka of not loving their mother, always hit hard because she’s so compassionate and caring that it’s easy to forget that she carries her own struggles. She always puts others before herself.

    You know, I don't think Katara 'wanted' revenge at all, just like how Zuko never 'wanted' to catch the avatar, at least not on its own.It's what separates her from a character like say, Hiroshi Sato, who explicitly wished to avenge his wife, and it drove him to the extremes that made him into an actual monster. I think, for Katara, it was a means to attaining something deeper. If I had to put it into a word I'd call it restoration. It's that sentiment in Hello Future Me's video that I think rings true to me: like a wound never healed.
    It's a scar that was left by the war, and we see in the comics that even after the war has ended, it doesn't seem to be healed. Not because she didn't take revenge, but because what she wants is simply impossible. Restoration can never occur and while killing the man might have made her feel good in the moment (and it's arguable that nobody would mourn his passing, especially not the audience), it's like Aang says, what does it accomplish? It does not bring Kya back. And that's really all she ever wanted. I can't assume that she ever had any delusions of becoming the best healer or waterbender in the world, defeating the princess of the fire nation in single combat, training not one but two avatars in waterbending in her lifetime, and contributing to the resurrection of not one but two nearly deceased cultures. It's like you said, hearing Zuko say those words flipped something inside her. I don't think she ever thought she'd ever see the man again. She didn't set out from the south pole to get revenge. She set out to learn waterbending with Aang, which she achieved fairly early in the journey. She probably didn't think she'd ever even be as good as he was at first.
    All of those events just sort of happened as a natural consequence of one thing, and that would be their necessity to her survival. They were needed for her to continue on her journey unhindered and safely and that's why they happened. In that respect, I find Katara is the only member of the main cast who never truly ever gets what she wants. Sokka is realized as a leader, Zuko becomes the firelord and has his honor restored and destiny actualized, Toph got to be who she really was around people who accepted her unconditionally, and Aang got to be a fully realized Avatar, save the world, and become bonded with the love of his life. Happy endings all around. Except for Katara, and I think for me that is what makes her uniquely tragic. I think that part of her always remains unfulfilled, unresolved, perhaps all the way up until her twilight years, which may be why she walked away from public or civic life, to embrace the role she probably only ever saw herself taking as a child, that of mother, and I don't think it's "regressive" for her to do that. What's wrong with wanting a peaceful life after so much was demanded of you? The closest thing to restoration, true restoration, that she is able of obtaining, is becoming a mother of her own children, and actually being there to raise them all the way to completion. To ensure that never again, will her tragedy be repeated.

She never gets a statue, she's not seen as a hero like Aang or Toph or Zuko, she doesn't even get to see her grand daughter's ceremony because Bryke didn't want her interacting with Zuko. That's literally the explanation they gave. She just "leaves it to the kids" despite her whole character being about determination, hope, and NEVER turning her back on people who need help. She just cries and misses her dead husband. Why can't she be a mom AND have a job besides raising Aang's reincarnation?

    But now as i grow up and experienced the world a bit more i see that revenge isnt always the answer and can lead to a cycle of hatred, and sometimes you need to let things go.

    I think in a way Katara's view on the Fire Nation having always been the enemy can be reconnected to the way the viewer might see them at first. Just the bad guy, black and white. But the show continously subverts this view by showing us how Zuko, the initial bad guy, is struggling and why he does what he does. While Ozai is pure evil (and Zhao as well I guess), every other person of the fire nation shows a multidimensionality that we seldom see in usual cartoon programming. While Zuko may be the pinnacle of this phenomenon as shown through his legendary character development, other characters like Azula, Ty Lee, Mai and even just normal background firebenders show that there is more to them than just bad guy of the week. And while the audience learns early on that not everyone from the fire nation is evil, Katara has to gradually come to that conclusion and even get punished for it the first time she trusted Zuko.

    I love that she let her mother's killer live, but didn't forgive him. Katara was able to finally separate who she was taking it out on needlessly(Zuko) and who deserved that anger(the man who killed her). So how do you learn to forgive someone who isn't sorry for what they did? While Katara may not have found the answer, she still was able to get where she wanted to be in life with her bending and her family. And perhaps by LOK she had found a way to finally forgive, but at least she found a way to be at peace with it.

    Back in the southern raiders episode, back in 2007, I never understood why everyone was surprised and startled by Katara’s revenge intention. Why should Katara being full of rage surprise us? Why, because throughout the show we are shown how loving she is? I didn’t think anything of that crap because no matter who you are, everyone has a dark side; even the nicest of people; shouldn’t all of us know that? Everyone is complex. Back when I was 7, I had a reading tutor who would hit me with a hammer anytime I got a question wrong, at 14 I was punched in the jaw by my aunt for something I didn’t do, and when I came back home from school to complain about the bullying I was experiencing, my aunts and grandparents did absolutely nothing, I suffered in silence of no one wanting to hear me out and you know what my principal told me? How is it after everything you went through, you remain respectful to all the elders and teachers at my school and never get into trouble at school and never showed any abusive behavior towards women? People are complex, I am complex and you don’t know what goes on people. Katara’s quest for revenge is nothing to be surprised about; we all have a duality.

    It's ultimately very telling that the two spirits at the heart of waterbending represent yin and yang. I imagine that they were the key idea the writers had in mind when developing Katara's character.

    Katara is great. She is harbours a lot of internal anger, and it shows. She's been very powerful from the start of the show, but it'd only show when angry or distressed. Like when she fought Paaku, froze Jet, or accidentally cut the iceberg in the first show. Very cleverly, Zuko is the opposite; he becomes stronger letting go of anger and rage. Both are strongest when acting opposite to the stereotype of their element. Back to the topic, the anger Katara has internally must be immense, and the strength to keep that anger down throughout the journey must be immense. Everyone cracks, even Katara, but she is not afaraid of anyone as much as she is afraid of herself. She is hindering herself. I think in the blood bending episode, she cries because she thought she had lost control, maybe even fearing that she'd become like Azula who is unhinged, unthinking of others, and manipulative of others, everything that Katara seemingly becomes when she subdues Hama.

    Katara reminds me a lot of my own sister. She idealized our dad for a lot of her childhood. I never really knew our dad growing because he was usually deployed overseas. Him being gone hurt her a lot and she took it out on me a lot. I couldn't ever understand why she was so upset.
    We bonded a lot over avatar while we were kids, and seeing that scene with katara and hakoda on the ship made it click for me. She knew our dad and had him ripped out of her life with no say. That inexplicable grief that has no where to go, nothing to ease it, and so difficult to explain especially for younger people lashes out in anger. It can feel like theres nothing else you can do.
    Being able to finally understand that she was trapped in this grieving and didn't just hate me was a big help to my own self image andmy perception of my sister.
    Katara is written in a very real way and shes my favorite character because she reminds of my own sister so much

How she hears about the random old man that Jet almost murdered and how she is so willing to believe his lies about that old man (who she never meets), purely based on the fact that he was Fire Nation. That part, to me, really showed how Katara and Sokka really did not digest their shared familial tragedies equally...

    There are many character types, one of them is the protector, and if you threaten what they protect, nothing can stop them.
    Also side note I was trying to pin it down and I think Zukos face got thinner between books 1, and 2 but then wider in 3, jumping back and forth here in frames scenes of him. I guess when he was an outcast he couldn't eat as much/as well, makes sense.
