I love how you included the prices as many don't mention it. You did a great job picking from the 40+ varieties available and have a nice mix of plants.
Thanks. I’ve watched a few videos lately and was thinking, “I’d love you know what they paid for that,” so I thought I should try adding that info when I can.
My garden is in zone 5 b and this is the first year that my large collection of Hydrangeas are now, 7/6 are all in bloom. Half of mine are Macrophyllas!! Gorgeous.
You guys there in The USA are so lucky with all the different Panicle and arborescence hydrangeas …spoiled for choice. Here in Australia we only have The original Annabelle and about 4 Panicle varieties. 😍🇦🇺❤️👍
Corey, I appreciate that you gave us an idea of what something like this will cost and some great ideas on where these hydrangeas will perform best. I live in zone 5a, or 5b now (depending on the winter) however, I prefer to purchase hardy plants to zone 3 or 4 because they have a better survival rate in my area. Thanks for giving such great advice and I love your down-to-earth videos. ~Margie🤗💐🦋
I'm in WV. Hydrangeas are pretty popular in my state. But I'm more interested in the paniculatas & in my area it seems like they sale the other varieties... I can always find the Limelight & Little Limelight but im wanting something more like pinky winky. I've thought about buying from proven winners website but I'd like to personally pick one. Buying online u just never know what your guna get plus there prices are double then say Lowes (proven winners brand & bigger pot sizes too) kinda crazy. But yea. Lol. This video was well done, I learned alot, thank u 🙂🌸💮
These videos are a hydrangea lover’s dream come true! So helpful and pretty, for those of us considering buying a plant or two from the huge number of varieties available these days. Enjoy it- thanks very much!
Hi Corey, I really enjoy your posts. I find you offer practical, down to earth advice and of course one can never know enuf about hydrangeas. Thanks for your friendly face and great info. Patti, A fan from Ottawa, Ontario Canada, Zone 5a/5b.
New subscriber and so glad I found your channel as there are not many knowledgeable creators in Zone 4. I love hydrangeas and appreciate your info and education on them, and the cost! You don’t find that often. Now I look forward to spending a few hours going thru your previous videos, too hot to do much else in this heat wave ! Thank you so much, Brenda🇨🇦ZN4
I have recently become very interested in hydrangeas so this video was right up my alley! There are so many varieties to learn about, it does seem a little overwhelming. I also don't know that I have garden centers in my area, in southern Indiana, that carry as many varieties as you showed. I am saving this video to re-watch when I am ready to plant a couple of hydrangeas!
The important thing is that you know your light conditions and have an idea of what “family” of hydrangeas you might like. Then at the garden center you can see what they offer - they may have some very nice alternatives. Many of the varieties I planted are from Proven Winners, so you could look at the PW website and see if there is a retailer near you. There are a lot of great non-Proven Winners hydrangeas as well.
You are a delight. Can't wait to see how your hydrangea border grows. I'm also in zone 5a, so was very happy to learn about the "Let's Dance" series. Now I just need to figure out where to find it.
Gaaaah! I just love all of the information you give on your videos! I will definitely make it up to your nursery one day soon! I'm making my husband watch this so he knows what I'm talking about when we go places! 🤭
Best hydrangea haul EVA! ❤ Gorgeous. Can't wait to see how they look year after year. This year I planted five invincible spirit 2 hydrangeas to make a hedge and CAN'T WAIT to see how they look year after year.
The kind I am excited to have growing is the Fairy Trail Bride (there's now a different cultivar and a green one as well). It's a cascading one, with lacey flowers similar to the mountain hydrangea, but it makes more of a rounded bush (from the pictures that I have seen) instead of canes with flowers on top.
This was so helpful! I have a spot that needs more hydrangeas. Now i know i can layer and which varieties will complement my Annabelles and macrophyllas. I planted macrophyllas before i knew what i was doing, lol.
Great info! Zone 6 here in Mid Michigan. I have three of the five types of hydrangeas. They’re all doing well but I have to baby my Let’s Dance macro. I cover it with leaves and wrap it in burlap in the winter. I did notice this year it has less blooms than previous years
@@UpNorthGardenMI I don’t recall which one, it was from a few years ago. After years of using soil acidifier and surviving one replanting it’s just now becoming a nice blueish purple
I really enjoyed that since I picked up an Invicibelle Lace for peanuts (15$) for a huge plant and am thrilled with it. I'm not a huge lover of hydrangeas, but I have 2 now! So far I've partnered it with hemerocallis True to Whim and various evergreens. I do understand the plants vs gutters dilemma 😁 QC zone 6a/b
Have one unknown hydrangea in zone 4. This is the first time it's bloomed in the 7 years we've been here. This year it's full of round blue flowers and is lovely but we have too many deer here for me to plant more. Very warm spring must have saved those buds. Thanks for that info and I do love your choices. Green with envy here!
Beautiful hydrangeas! I’m happy you selected a wide variety of hydrangeas rather than a hedge row of all the same hydrangea. Looking forward to an update later in the season!
We had an extended January thaw in February and then it went to a deep freeze again. My hydrangeas did exactly what you showed. They’re growing like newbies again. I cut off the dead wood and let the rest be. Also my sons dog speed on them 😅 One of them is the tuff stuff too fun lace cap. I hope next year is better 😊
This was such a great tutorial on the different hydrangeas. I want them all. I am 5a in Madison WI and despite having great success with lots of varieties the Oakleaf hydrangea continues to challenge me. I can get them to survive about 3 years but they really just limp along. Can’t decide if I should forget about them or just keep trying. Any tips from everyone is appreciated. Thank you for this lovely video
Hi Corey, I've been loving this series because I am planning a hydrangea garden for the entire front of my small house so I'll only need 28' of plants (I have 3 limelight planted now . I'm 5A and was concerned about full sun. House faces south / southwest so bakes in the afternoons. Should I plan some sort of shade structure for the West side? Also note we have full sand soil. My limelights are slow but get afternoon shade after 4pm.
If your Limelights are holding up to the sun, other panicle and arborescens will do fine (some extra water and fertilizer/compost should counter the sandy soil). I’m guessing that if you’re zone 5 you’re far enough north that panicle and arborescens will have no trouble in full sun. For other families of hydrangeas, you’ll want to consult the tags for its light preference.
2 questions - I have 16, 2 gal pots incrediball hydrangeas ready to plant. What should I add to my black dirt? Do I add miracle grow, peat moss or ?. I want to do it the right healthy way for my plants. When potting containers what is the best stuff to use for healthy plants please,? Your videos are so educational and give so much inspiration to keep planting one plant at a time.. or in my case, I hate 72 plants to plant in the ground and pots this weekend. Yikes!!!!
If your soil is healthy you don’t need to add anything. If you feel you need to amend your soil, you can dig a slightly wider hole and mix in compost into your existing soil. Talk to your local nursery - they may have special insight into the local soil conditions. You could buy “starter fertilizer” which is a mild fertilizer, but it’s not always necessary. As for containers, just start with a quality container mix (it has better drainage compared to garden mix or top soil mix). Fertilizing weekly with a water-soluble fertilizer will do feeding.
@@UpNorthGardenMI thank you so much for your quick response and helping to ease my mind that I don't need to buy 10 different types of stuff to plant the hydrangeas and containers. Have a great weekend!!!
Just planted some qt, hydrangeas. Zone 6b/7a, it’s been incredibly hot and humid the last few weeks. I’m watering a lot. Question? I don’t have drip but what about filling gallon milk jugs with holes to drip during this heat wave.
Trust me, you don’t want hydrangea advice for zone 9 from a Michigander… we’ll never quite comprehend what you contend with. You have the opposite problem we have where a plant “should” survive based on our zone, but our specific climate it’s just too cold at the wrong times. I’d suggest visiting a local nursery and talking to them about the look you’re going for - they can help direct you to plants that would do great in your area - or possibly offer suggestions to help your plant do better.
I live in zone 10 b . Southern California. I have a lace cap hydrangea on my balcony (west facing under the overhang) in a large pot. Its edges of its leaves always curl and turn brown. Is it getting too much Sun? Should I sheiks it with an umbrella? It was from Home Depot so I do not know which variety it is. Victoria
Too much sun could be the culprit, but you’re in a very different zone from me… and I’m not sure what kind of hydrangea you have, so I’m just guessing on that.
I’ll keep an eye on them. I know a lot of people with arborescens against vinyl sided houses who haven’t had this issue, but each location comes with different challenges, so I’ll be on the lookout. Thanks

If you can get it to release at the right pace, it would definitely help. Another option would be a soaker hose temporarily set up on a timer.

There may be retailers that ship - we’re not set to for that here.

If you have issues with deer munching your hydrangeas they like H. serrata, so they don’t bloom for me in SE MI zone 6a
I don’t have deer at my house, but at the nursery, we spray all our planted hydrangeas with Plant Skydd to keep the deer away.
