Shidou Ryusei is NOT as Good as You Believe... Here's Why | Blue Lock Analysis

Shidou Ryusei at the current point in the Anime is the 2nd Strongest Blue Lockers in the series. His ability to perform incredible and insane plays from within the goal box, as well as his instinctual movements and reflexes make him a deadly opponent. However, that only applied back in the 3rd Selection. In the current stages of the manga, I wouldn’t even consider Shidou to be Top 10 in Blue Lock.
Blue Lock (Japanese: ブルーロック, Hepburn: Burū Rokku) (stylized as BLUELOCK) is a Japanese manga series written by Muneyuki Kaneshiro and illustrated by Yusuke Nomura. It has been serialized in Kodansha's Weekly Shōnen Magazine since August 2018, with its chapters collected in 24 tankōbon volumes as of May 2023. In 2018, the Japanese national team finished 16th in the FIFA World Cup. As a result, the Japan Football Association hires the football enigma Ego Jinpachi. His master plan to lead Japan to stardom is Blue Lock, a training regimen designed to create the world's greatest egotist striker. Those who fail Blue Lock will never again be permitted to represent any Japanese team. Yoichi Isagi, an unknown high school football player conflicted about his playing style, decides to join the program to become the best striker in the world.
Blue Lock - EPISODE Nagi (ブルーロック-EPISODE 凪- Burū Rokku - EPISODE Nagi?) is a spin-off manga series illustrated by Kota Sannomiya, based on the original Blue Lock manga series written by Muneyuki Kaneshiro and illustrated by Yusuke Nomura. Your comparison between nagi and shido is fundamentally flawed nagi waits for a pass then scores based off of his creativity (if hes in flow) or the image of a goal the passer gave him. This is not the same as shido who actively sees the best position to score goals from but has teammates so inferior to him that they cant keep up with him and his plays. This is the exact same problem bachira had before coming to blue lock and rin had when sae left his team for the 4 years he spent at la real. That doesnt make him any less of a player because his teammates are not good enough to play with him. In the ubers match when yukkimiya gave the wrong type of pass to isagi and kurona was subbed out he couldnt do anything and instead asked for hiori to be subbed onto the field just so he can get someone with his level of vision to play since he cannot score without it. Shido and isagi is a much better comparison than shido and nagi. Also being manmarked is literally the way to counter freedom type of players, restrict their freedom and they play worse the same thing happened to kaiser with lorenzo but people dont say anything just because "hes an actual defender" meanwhile kunigami has the perfect build for a manmarker with the best physicality in the u20 category and is in flow state which greatly heightens his abilities. Shido's unpredictability doesnt matter if hes getting followed no matter where he goes by someone faster and stronger than him, and no this isnt an issue for him as a player since literally no other defender will only focus on one person's movements and disregard the rest of the field and game except kunigami due to his vendetta.

Couldnt have said any better Noel Noa had 3 plans for this PSG match, to awake Kaiser potencial, to use Kunigami to nullefy Shindow and Igaguri to slow down Rin flow state on the second half.
Shindow will have his moment in the future but like when the author did with Barou and Nagi he is going to take a secondary role for now as we get introduced to more of the best U-20 players around the world.

I love shidou right, My favorite character in blue lock but the point of him barely changing is fair tbh, if he just enhance his passing, dribbling and shoot without a pass then he would rock the field, so I lowkey think Ubers would be perfect for him bc of snuffy's method of training. And I also acknowledge that shidou would sock snuffy for the job think but I think snuffy will get him to come around. Also, shidou with predator eyes alongside with a training regiment from Snuffy would make him a monster.

Shindou is still great but Kaiser, Rin and Isagi are taking all the attention for now to push the story foward, i find it interesting that teams like Real Madrid dindt participate in the Blue lock project i wonder which attacker will be joining Itoshi Sae, i hope its Isagi so that we can find the reason why Sae stopped being a attacker.

Shidou does have at least average skills in all fields, he’s stated to have professional football technique and the same chart you use to display Shidous two goals per game displays how well rounded he is. Harland also is literally the same as shidou in a sense that without a genius midfielder they’re basically useless. Haaland without KDB can’t produce many good results because both of them are poachers and don’t have a great ability of scoring on their own.
Haaland in dortmound without kdb still put up great numbers . You don’t know what you’re talking about .

First things first, i ain't gonna address the whole "Shidou Glazers" thing because this notion on it's own makes your point of view extremely biased and thus unreliable. Secondly, i just want to point out the fact that Blue Lock as a manga is written with immense amounts of research regarding countless topics from psychology to neuroscience, all very real things that are applied to everyday life, except perhaps the aura thing. The comparison of Shidou with Harlan although a bit stretched i agree is helpful as an attempt to visualize his playstyle and thus i see no reason for discarding it so easily. Furthermore, i would just like to point out the following:
1) You forgot to mention that SPOILERS the reason Shidou was stopped so easily by Kunigami is that Kunigami is pretty much, well A FUCKING CYBORG. Yes, it may be a nickname, but it is true. After he was defeated by Shidou he was forced to go through the so far unknown trials of becoming the trump card (i don't remember the exact name of the program, please forgive me). Ego himself states that he had to defeat all other players who lost and chose this path and who knows how many other trials. And he is the SOLE survivor. His current physique surpasses all others, and this is a fact not my assumption. So, with this fact now in mind, sure, Shidou is stopped dead in his tracks. But then again, LIKE ALL OTHERS WOULD in his place. Thus this argument is non-existent.
2) You said that even current Isagi, Barou and others could score against the World Five. Yeah, sure, off course. THAT'S THE EXACT REASON AS TO WHY Shidou and Rin scoring against then was such a huge achievement back then in the U - 20 Arc. Also, the fact that Shidou can't perform chemical reactions was, as we saw later, debunked by Shidou himself. He can perform chemical reactions with Sae and Charles, and yes i do admit that his plays in these specific occurrences relied heavily on their assists. BUT, you once again forgot to mention Shidou's greatest achievement during the U - 20 match. And i cannot stretch this enough:
Shidou was the FIRST Blue Locker who managed to enter the Flow State.
This was the moment that Shidou was recognized as one of the best strikers blue lock had to offer. And yes, i seem to rely my counter arguments heavily on this arc. Because that is exactly what I'm doing. Because in the Egoist League Arc, Shidou was pushed back due to plot reasons. We had to focus on the story of Isagi, to introduce Kaiser and further built the so called power system. We haven't seen the games the PXG played. We only know that their most difficult opponent until know where the Ubers, which makes complete sense because Barou, Lorenzo, Niko, Oliver. We are literally seen a team that we have absolutely no idea about their development against the team with the best known development and potentially the BEST players in it (Isagi, Kaiser, Kunigami).
The whole Egoist League arc is way too long and we have reached a point where we have Isagi vs Kaiser vs Rin. There is no room for Shidou to be developed, at least currently, and same thing goes for Nagi as well. Lastly, just don't compare Nagi with Shidou. Nagi's power is control over the ball, while Shidou's is his Extreme Special Awareness, a weapon no one else has. Who knows perhaps we will see more in the future.
The play style section is just untrue, while he does play instinctively it's not just random, it's established early on that Shidou arrives to the same conclusion as Rin, who is probably an unconfirmed Metavision user (or at the very least thinks logically). He basically has instinctive metavision when it comes to goal spots. He's very similar to child Rin who goes to "danger spots" and scores from there. And while Rin eventually learns to have logic, Shidou is still relying purely on instinct.
Also, again this is a HUGE recency bias. He's done nothing the most recent chapters so you think he's no longer good, but objectively he's still one of the best strikers, and to support this just remember how much hype Shidou has during the chapters when he was cooking. I swear the Blue Lock community has the memory span of a goldfish.
It's not recency bias. People were saying this about him since the first NEL game as he didn't score on the same pitch as Rin. Rin > Shidou. 2nd Rin isn't confirmed to have metavision but his plays are very efficient, he has wider scoring options, he can actually dribble and pass, etc. 3rd. Shidou does NOT perform well against characters who can just mark him UNLESS he has a world class midfielder who can deliver pinpoint passes to him. He was locked by Niko, Isagi, and Reo in U-20, then he got locked up by Kunigami who's just...physically superior in everyway. Not to mention Loki's mention of how he takes REALLY bad shots and out of what 14 he only hit 3... and his specialty is in the box finishing right? That's garbage. How are you in the box with a talent for finishing in the box but shooting WIDE. We don't have the attention span of a goldfish you just haven't been paying attention and are entranced by how "cool" he is. He beat a broken down mentally drained and defeated Kunigami and Reo, scored a bicycle (only achievable cause of flow), and a freekick. Relying on instinct and your weapon but then not being able to score with your instincts, physical prowess, and weapon unless you're left unmarked is NOT a good striker.
@@blueblob8630 niko and isagi stopping him ONCE each isn't locking him. even with reo, reo stopped 1 pqss getting to him and dblocked 1 shot, other than that he could't stop shidou. And of course he's not going to perform as well when manmarked, the same thing was the case for kaiser when lorenzo manmarked him. And no, loki didn't say that he only hit 3, he only SCORED 3. And this is is with you ASSUMING that he took those shots in the box, also not even taking into consideration that the shots he does take is insaley hard for anyone to scoer. Don't yap about not paying attention when you're not. Oh and reo and kuni weren't beaten down and mentally drained. They get a days rest between a game with the only mental struggle being the stress of getting eliminated, mind u shidou was in the same situation yet was fine. And please name me ONE character that has scored while being manmarked? cuz we've seen multiple times now that that's the only way to stop him. We've also seen other players get manmarked and they dind't score either, eve kaiser's goal was when he wasn't being manmarked. U saying KAISER isn't a good striker too?

1.) Isagi reached the corner kick by Sae before Shidou IN the goal box that means he got snuffed in his own turf with a worldclass midfielder. Niko also intercepted the ball before Shidou could despite his aerial and physical mobility/abilities being better than Nikos again being completely denied by people not as physically gifted by you in your own turf makes you look bad.
2.) Reo EMBARASSED HIM. Reo used Neiou's body press and shut Shidou down/made him take a bad shot, then he forced Shidou to take a bad shot again when Gagamaru handstand blocked him "Thanks to Reo his options are either high or low", and then again got snuffed by copying Aikus header to clear the ball that was going directly to Shidou. The only time Reo was in and Shidou was in and Shidou scored was the bicycle from multiple feet out because Reo wasn't on him. IMAGINE if Shidou was on the Blue Lock team? He would get 0 world class passes, 0 chemical reactions, and probably get locked down by the defense if one person who's a 99% copy can do it manmarking imagine an entire team OML people would see how fraudulent he is.😆 Literally his only 2 goals in U-20 were unmanmarked but ok.
3.) Kunigami was literally a slow tank who couldn't dribble in 2nd selection and still can't now then you have Reo who was literally thinking and crying about Nagi while in the match and under insane stress. Blue Lock Episode Nagi Chapter 16 Reo, "Ahhh I wanna die. Somebody just kill me." Reo episode Nagi Chapter 23 Shidou, "That stepping is too obvious" keep in mind Shidou has 0 defensive feats besides this. He saw one bicycle which he's seen Nagi do before (he literally recalls this) got shaken up and basically faltered. After the loss Reo did NOT want to hop back into that field yet we're still using 2nd selection feats in 2024 as if Otoya and Karasu weren't numbers 3 and 4???
4.) Loki in Chapter 246 about Shidou, "You're taking too many shots, TWELVE SHOTS versus THREE goals. You need to UP your shooting range a TAD (in box shots is his weapon) and FURTHER increase PRECISION". This canonically means Shidou WITH Charles against Barca the NEL team with the least wins, least known characters, has no defense of any kind, made him shoot 12 times and 9 were either off target or blocked IN the goal box. Otherwise Loki wouldn't have highlighted the precision and only said a tad for range since he knows Shidous weapon. U-20 level midfielder and bro is 3/12 without even SHARING THE PITCH WITH RIN. Who was bro getting locked up by Otoya?!? 😆

These are just examples off the top of my head but at least know what you're talking about gang. Shidou is canonically a bad shot taker, can't make long range shots and even struggles finishing INSIDE the box which is his MAIN weapon ESPECIALLY when he's not left literally unmarked. He's a trash ST simple as that. 3/12 is insane. and yet he has a U-20 midfielder giving him pinpoint passes that HE PREFERS and he can barely use his weapon.
You know what, you're right I was enamoured with the idea of Shidou than the reality. I think if he makes it into the u20 team for Japan he'll be on the bench & have to dig deeper into his reason for playing football & his past or he won't play and remain stagnant.
I'll admit i was wrong in my estimation of his abilities, apparently (I'm not sure if it's true) he is based on Zlatan and similarly Zlatan in his early years at Ajax was called out by his agent to get his head into the game to be a proper striker, maybe someone like Ego or The Pro player from Ubers will get his head on straight.
He'll probably still be eccentric but learn to play with others and develop his other areas like 1v1's if the above scenario happens.

I feel like there's something that you're missing here. Kunigami is able to block Shidou so effectively, because he's both dedicated to that only mission, and also, using that to enter his flow.
You even specify that in a situation with a good defender like Reo blocking him, Shidou still manages to Score. His playstyle might look ineffective when put in front of a good defender, but his whole thing about instinctual shooting is that even if his options are being lowered, he instinctually fires off into the best angles to score.

@@aerosassain Unless Kunigami gets subbed in, Shidou is still free. Shidou may be a joke, but inside that area, he is still a threat. Isagi has to face both Rin and Shidou. Even with Kaiser's help against Rin, as long as there is no proper answer to Shidou, it's gonna be tricky. That's why I believe Isagi's awakening isn't complete yet. He is still in the "discarding process" in order to win. When flashbacks from Isagi hit... it's going to be over.

Shidou is basically everything Ego talked about in chapter 1. He also kinda won for a bit given he made Ego temporarily give up.
It really feels like he was written to be the "antagonist" of the u20 v blue lock game and then the author didnt know what eless to do with him back in the second and 3rd selections were individual skills were what was important he was king because interms of individual skills no one could really compete and when given a amazing midfielder he could exead his limits in the u 20 game but now thats basically everyone aiming for the striker position there indivdual skills have caught up and found midefeilds that work perfectly with them ( and are actually in the blue lock program). Shido scores super impressive goals sure but not every goal needs to be a super goal it just needs to get in the net and so many players are just better at that now. Maybe the author has a plan for him but at the moment he just feels like a benchmark to show how good rin is being better then him that while we have been told has moved up living off his hype from the u20 game but hasn't really been shown to have reached it.

he did that because reo was burning out of stamina, where was that intelligence when reo made him useless earlier?

@ you can tell Reo isnt moving as fast as he was before with keeping him contained because he was running low on stamina, this is further proven with Kunigami, showing that manmarking is gonna drain your stamina. And sure but if Shidou decides to shoot rather than pass back, knowing he is in a situation where he cant shoot, that is a dumb decision
Thank you Aero i thought i was bugging when i thought Shidou wasn't impressive even back in the third selection, im not saying his scoring isnt world class but that can only get him so far to me Shidou always seemed like a one trick pony to me.

On a real note the one thing I really like about aero more than the other blue lock TH-camrs are his passion and his takes that most people wouldn’t agree with. He was the first person that made me realize that Karasu is actually a mid player when back then everyone just labeled him as the best defensive midfielder because he was known for playing that position. With this take I agree that shidou is an overrated player but I still believe he is a good striker. The numbers don’t lie but if you have 4 goals by running the ball instinctively even though defenders could predict it after seeing it is still an impressive feat. The only thing I found outlandish was when he said he isn’t in the top 10 and you can’t convince me that players like otoya and sendou are better strikers (assuming he meant top 10 without the pros). Overall this is a great take and this is why I enjoy your vids because you have opinions of your own and you aren’t afraid to state it and be passionate about it.

@aerosassain everyone needs a passer lol. Shidou was only special because everyone in bluelock was not good enough to help him significantly elevate his skills. Which is exactly the dynamic Isagi also has with hiyori right now.

Even though shidou was nerfed he's still really good, you really are just hating on the guy. Kunigami is pretty much built for defense and Noel Noah is the best compared to Shidou, so it's not surprising that he and Charles couldn't stop Noah.

I love Shidou, and no one could make me hate him because his character has way more flavor than a lot of generic fan favorites like Kunigami or Yukimiya, but I can't dispute any of your points. Shidou was extremely good during 2nd and 3rd selections because the author needed to make him relevant and have him perceived as menacing in the upcoming U20vsBL11 match. The NEL is all about Isagi and Kaiser, and since Shidou doesn't have any ties with them, Kaneshiro didnt have space for him and completely abandoned his development. This didn't affect only Shidou, but Kunigami, too, since their rivalry was supposed to be a relevant plot point, and it went nowhere. Sure, Kunigami won cause he stopped Shidou every time, but does it actually feel like a win or a real accomplishment if the narrative didn't put any real emphasis on that throughout the match? The tension that was supposed to enrich Shidou and Kunigami's rematch just wasn't there AT ALL. Shidou didn't even remember who Kunigami was, and Kunigami's emo ass didn't challenge him in a meaningful way (for example it could've been great for Kuni to expose every single flaw in Shidou's playstile, creating an interesting stimulus for Shidou to evalute things more). We were supposed to root for Kunigami and be excited for his revenge, feeling his rage and enjoying his comeback, but what did we have? Some panels of Kunigami playing in a physically imposing way as always with no wild card flashbacks or any intensity between him and Shidou.
Coming back to Shidou, he still is a good player because his athletic prowess is only matched by Nagi, and they are the only ones who can pull off such spectacular goals. This being said, his fatal flaw is that he is abnormal. He can't link up with anyone, and he's a violent freak who'd be in prison without Blue Lock. I have a soft spot for misfits who find their place when someone finally understands them and gives them a chance, but I'm afraid Shidou might crash out because the author can't fit him in the story anymore. The spot for Isagi's main rival is already occupied by Rin and there are a lot of other characters more correlated to him. Once again Shidou is impositionable, both inside and outside of the story 😢

You are so BRAVE for saying this loud! I once said that he is not that impressive compared to some other players like Rin, Isagi, and Barou. And one Shidou glazer told me 'YoU fOrGot HiS tWO GoALs iN tHe U-20 ARc!' I mean yeah those were mind-blowing but now the development other characters received is driving him into a shadow (Hell, I believe the new development Nagi is gonna get will surpass Shidou as well). Besides, just like you said, he can't do shit against the other decent players without someone play-making for him for example, Rin doesn't need a great midfielder to score...he can create the goal opportunity himself or the same can be said about Isagi (him using logic and manipulation at the same time on both his own teammates and opponents)!

After that Lorenzo never holds the ball for long and passes it to another member of Ubers for offense like you said. So again is it harder for pinpoint catered passes in the box against a team with no defenders or to score with a team of nothing but defenders.

Shidou as a player is probably a 3. Like if I put current Shidou on the world stage (professionals) he probably would average 1 goal every 5 games if he were lucky. If I put someone like Reo, Isagi, Hiori, or Nagi even if they don't score they would do a whole lot better than Shidou since they the ability to make chemical reactions with other people.

These can all be done on both his right and left foot as shidou is naturally ambidextrous as well

5 Reasons why shidou is not that good anymore and isnt one of the top tier strikers:
1.Shidou has not evolved he has the exact same toolkit he had in his intro currently,he literally got nothing.
2.Everyone has evolved.Look at it like this,Shidou started at 80% meanwhile everyone else was 50% but now everyone is better combined with his mediocre kit he isnt dominant anymore.
3.His tookit/weapons are extremely limited.Every single weapon shidou has is striker orientated,he can ONLY shoot nothing else.(No playmaking,No dribbling and isnt even that good in 1v1s)
4.Shidou,due to his limited tookit,is extremely dependent on a rlly good passer.The reason this arguments is so common is cuz its strong and true if shidou doesnt have a passer to play make for him he cannot do anything.
5.Shidou is CANONICALLY inconsistent with chemical reactions.The only 2 people he can consistently mix with is Sae and charles,2 genius lvl midfielders(plz dont say oh charles was confirm a prodigy im gonna ignore ur lack of reading comprehension and think ur stupid) and his unpredictability is a double edge sword cuz only a few people can actually read/link up with him,unless its a reflex X reflex type play his chemical reactions frequency is the worse out of all the strikers.
