It looks like the MANN has been cost engineered a bit more, possibly to keep it competitive price wise whilst retaining expensive German manufacturing/labour. The Mahle on the other hand is built with cheaper labour but perhaps to what would be a more costly design. The really important bit though is whether the designs meet/exceed the required performance for their intended service life and I think the answer is yes for both brands.

I like the Mann filters and had been using them in my Suzuki Grand Vitara. Where the filter is located you really need to use a cup socket for removal. Unfortunately the flats at the end of the Mann filters seem to differ from the likes of Bosch, Fram and Blueprint and genuine Suzuki filters and the cup socket slips on the flats where as it's a good fit on the other makes. It makes removal a bit of a pain due to the filter location. I have tried three different cup sockets and none fit the Mann filter properly.

@@Rimrock300 This is my angle on oil changes after 40 years of driving:
Change your oil only according to mileage. Every year is BS and a waste of good oil and money. If the manufacturer specifies 10 000 Ks, you can stretch that to 15 or eve 20 000. Sure, that might mean slightly more engine wear, but do you really want to one day bring your car to the scrap yard with a still perfectly good engine? Let your engine get old and worn at the same pace as the rest of your car.

People see 'made in China' and immediately assume it will be poor quality.
Others like myself, who have worked in the motor trade, in parts departments, know there are many different levels of quality of production, even in China. Yes there is some utter shyte, but there is also some very good quality Chinese stuff too.
There is an argument for not buying Chinese because of the political reasons of the CCP, but that doesn't have any bearing on the quality of the product.
Many quality brands of car manufacturer, have lots of their OE spec parts, (yes even on German cars), made in china.

It's not where it's made, it's whose quality standards it's made to.
I explain to people all the time that there's a big difference between "Bob's oil filters" that are made in China and Mahle filters that are made in China.
In the case of Bob's oil filters some guy named Bob who wanted to start an oil filter company went to China and sought out an oil filter manufacturer and made a contract with them to make his filters, which are essentially what they already produce, but print Bob's name and company logo on them and package them in a box printed with Bob's name and logo.
In the case of Mahle it was Mahle themselves that built the plant in China full of their spec production equipment along with everything being made to their standards, so essentially the filters are identical to the one's made in Germany.
Any large corporation whose products in the past 30 years started showing up with made in China written on the box are all essentially selling you the same exact product they were when their plant was located in Germany or the US or wherever it is they oriented from, they simply moved their plant to China along with enough management to oversee production to make sure the standards are held to the same level as before.
All that said I still try buying products made in countries that have free societies, I try my very best not to support communist systems.

@@dirkfolscher3001 Hardly. This is not a test, but a series of personal and subjective preferences. MANN is the manufacturer of OEM Porsche oil filters. These oil filters are manufactured precisely according to Porsche specifications and with MANN development experience. All components of the oil circuit are matched to each other. In the case of oil filters, it is not about which oil filter has the most pleats, the thickest filter paper or the finest pores. It is about whether the filter mass remains dimensionally stable, whether the flow rate meets the OEM's specifications or whether the pressure gradient between the inlet and outlet is correct ... for example.

I used to work in a filter factory and personally would choose the Mann filter for the reasons of it's likely the Mann filters are probably the oem chosen when the motor was developed (so matched to the specifications Porsche required), next in the views of the centre pierced tube the Mann has steel plate rolled into a tube and spot welded whereas the Mahle looked like it was a pierced spiral strip coiled and continuous (roller) welded, so my question is how rigid is this tube,,getting to the filter media, although the filtering is finer what is the flow rate loss between each side of the filtration media especially in a high stress/loading situation, finally the assembly spring (the one in the bottom) the one on the Mahle looks a nice spring but the Mann's diaphragm spring plate by it's form looks to more positively centrally locate the filter in the filter "can" preventing the filter from "offsetting" to the side, I have other reasons I'd choose the Mann but these are the main ones.

They held between 10-17 quarts of oil (depending in the year/model) and that pump had to push all that oil to the front of the engine to the oil cooler (Basically the oil did a job cooling the motor) The 4 inlet holes in the Mann is wild but they might not need more due to the oil pump and the pressure it creates. I would use the Mahle and change the oil every 5K on the dot but I think the Mann is acceptable due to the volume of oil those motors hold. I still like filtration quality as the #1 factor.

Nice video a de very good job. Of course , 2 more tests ( not easy to do ) should be done:
1 - differential pressure between inlet and outlet with the same oil, quality , flow and pressure .
2 - opening pressure of the release valve ( very important with dirty filter and cold conditions).
    Regards

I would say that the Mann filter would flow a larger volume of oil, whereas the Mahle filter would remove smaller particles, ensuring greater purity of the filtered oil. I would guess that the Mahle filter would become overwhelmed with contaminants much more quickly than the Mann filter, so if you're looking for a longer service life I'd go with the Mann filter. I work in the car parts supply sector, and European manufacturers tend to qualify Mann filters as OEM parts on their vehicles, so maybe they know something we don't!

Great comparison. I have seen quite a few Mann filters on German equipment. It is likely the OEM supplier to Porsche. I’d bet old Ferdinand preferred flow rate to super fine filtration in his engines. Just a guess but as much as I prefer a European product to one made in China I’d have to pick the finer filtration and the rubber seal at the top of the Mahle on this one. Another terrific comparative video. Thanks for sharing!

Yea, other countries like Germany have very different disclosure laws when it comes to where a product is made, in the US the package must show the country of origin, in other countries they're allowed to put the company's home country on the package and then the country of origin where the product was made on the product itself, by doing it that way you don't know where it was actually made until you get it home and open the box.
There's been companies caught here in the US advertising "Made in Germany/UK/France etc etc" who had people in those countries unboxing products and removing the Made in China stickers from the product then shipping them to the US distributors, by doing this they had people in the US buying products they thought were made in those countries and paying highly elevated prices for what they thought was "European craftsmanship".
I remember about 10 years back there was a new line of motorcycle helmets on the market that people were paying ridiculous prices for thinking they were made in Germany, turns out the helmets didn't pass European or American DOT safety standards, the shell's broke much easier than they should have once an agency started testing them even the padding on the inside wasn't up to the claimed standards, as soon as the trouble started and it became public knowledge that the helmets were actually made in China from normal plastics and other substandard materials the company's website went dead and nobody could get a hold of their offices which turned out to be an apartment or something like that where they were unboxing them and removing the labels then taking the reboxed helmets around the corner to a shipper and shipping them to the US.

It doesn't matter if things are produced in China by reputable brands. They usually have quality control and do everything on a European standard. Just the labour is cheaper over there. Major German car brands also build their cars for the Asian market there. Just like they do in Mexico for the US market. I believe that some of the people running those factories are actually remote employees from Europe.

Which is not how oil filters work. It's not about as much flow as possible, or the thickest filter possible. It's about having the exact oil flow the engine needs, and the exact amount of filter thickness, etc. MANN makes filters for Porsche OEM, they're designed specifically for Porsche's and come in them when you buy them The MAHLE filter is a generic filter, one for all design pretty much, and not specifically made a specific engine.

  • @stormrider01
